Welcome to the Winter Solstice!

The First Day of Winter, also known as the Winter Solstice, takes place when either of the Earth's poles reach their maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice a year, once in each hemisphere. The First Day of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere is on the December solstice, with the season running until the March equinox, while the First Day of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere is on the June solstice, with the season running until the September equinox.

The First Day of Winter is the day with the shortest amount of daylight of the year in its hemisphere. The areas closest to the poles experience the shortest days, with the poles themselves experiencing continuous darkness or twilight at this time. In many areas, winter is associated with snow, blizzards, and freezing temperatures. The accumulation of snow and ice is more pronounced in the Northern Hemisphere, where there is more landmass. Winters in the Southern Hemisphere are milder because there is less landmass and more of a maritime climate. As spring approaches, the days get longer. Even though days increase in length, temperatures in most places continue to fall as winter lengthens, which is known as seasonal lag. This is because it takes time for the Earth to warm up.

SU News

Syracuse OL target Tapuvae Amaama sets commitment date: 'They're up there for me' (247sports.com; Bailey)

Class of 2022 offensive lineman Tapuvae Amaama will announce his commitment on Jan. 22 at the Polynesian Bowl, he tweeted on Monday. A senior at Skyridge High School in Lehi, Utah, he said in a message that Syracuse is "up there for me," declining to name which other schools he's considering from a growing offer list.

Amaama has been on the Orange's radar since early June, receiving an offer from SU offensive line coach Mike Schmidt in short order. He took an official visit to Central New York two weekends ago.

"It was a really cool visit and coach Mike Schmidt actually came out here the day before we went out for our official," Amaama told 247Sports previously. "Coach Schmidt was at my team banquet and it showed how much they really love me. It was great going out there and it was my first time being able to see New York City. I liked getting to know all the coaches and see what Syracuse has to offer."

The 6-foot-4, 340-pound Amaama is rated three stars and the No. 45 interior offensive lineman this cycle by the 247Sports Composite. He also holds offers from BYU, Virginia, Central Michigan, Colorado State, Florida Atlantic, Hawaii, Miami, Jackson State and Liberty, among others.

The Orange currently has 14 players in its 2022 class, including two offensive line signees Chad Schuster and Joe Cruz. SU is also recruiting the transfer portal actively as it looks to bolster a group that's losing only sixth-year senior Airon Servais to graduation.

Positional Priorities for Syracuse Recruiting in the Transfer Portal (SI; McAllister)

The transfer portal is a new era of recruiting with the ability to add experienced talent to a roster. Syracuse football has added impactful transfers in the last few years, and will look to do so again in 2022. Which positions should they target? These are the top positions I would prioritize in the portal.

Note: Safety was not included as the Orange already has Bralyn Oliver committed as a transfer from Louisville.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Syracuse has lost all three starters from the 2021 season, as each has exhausted their eligibility. In addition, the Orange has lost a rotational lineman and a depth lineman to the portal. There is young talent waiting in the wings, some of which have played, but a veteran presence would be a big boost to that group. Syracuse has already offered Albany transfer Jared Verse, which shows they are certainly looking in the portal for line help. Whether Syracuse looks for one defensive end, two defensive ends, one tackle or some combination remains to be seen.

CORNERBACK

Syracuse has lost corners Adrian Cole and Chase Atkinson to the portal. Adding a couple of players who could potentially start if Garrett Williams elects to turn pro and would add quality depth if he returns would really bring the entire secondary together. If Syracuse can add to the defensive line and bring in a corner or two, the defense has the potential to be deeper than the 2021 unit.

TIGHT END

Syracuse currently has two tight ends on the roster in Maximilian Mang and Steven Mahar. Chris Elmore is listed as a fullback, and Mang is Elmore's primary backup. So as those two are really more of the fullback or h-back types, there is a need on the roster for a traditional tight end that can both block and be a receiving threat. Especially one with experience. Syracuse has already offered Lafayette transfer Steven Stilianos, who is planning to visit in January. He also holds an offer from Rutgers, among others. Stilianos fits the bill of the blocking tight end who can also help the passing attack, which tells you what Syracuse is looking for at the position.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Syracuse is currently set to have 18 offensive linemen next season, so numbers is not an issue. However, if there is someone in the portal who can be an upgrade, specifically at tackle opposite Matthew Bergeron, the Orange should jump at the chance to add that player. Syracuse has already offered a handful of transfer lineman, so the staff clearly agrees with that approach.

Who are Robert Anae and Jason Beck? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Klein)

With early signing day in the rearview mirror, Dino Babers seems to be focussing on his coaching staff. After a five-win season that Babers defended as a success considering the low expectations the nation had for the Orange going into the year, SU saw a mass exodus from the coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Sterlin Gilbert, Tight Ends Coach Reno Ferri and Defensive Line Coach Vince Reynolds are all out. With the hire of Special Teams Coordinator Bob Ligashesky, Babers is starting to fill the vacancies.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported on Sunday that the Orange are targeting former Virginia coaches Robert Anae to fill the offensive coordinator position and Jason Beck as the QB Coach.

Sources: Syracuse is targeting two Virginia coaches for open spots on the Orange's offensive coaching staff – recently departed UVA OC Robert Anae as the offensive coordinator and current QB coach Jason Beck as the QB coach.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) December 20, 2021

Unlike most of the OC applicants, Anae was not fired from his last job. Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall surprised the nation when he resigned. That meant that Anae hit the market as a highly coveted play caller. This hire makes too much sense for Syracuse. The former BYU assistant led the Cavaliers to an elite offensive performance in 2021. UVA ranked third nationally in yards per game with over 516, and scored nearly 35 points per game (22nd in the FBS.) The numbers speak for themselves, but Anae has yet another nugget to his resumé that should make Babers’ eyes pop. He has a surplus of experience and success with dual-threat QBs. Bryce Perkins parlayed his time under Anae to an NFL roster spot with the Rams. Brennan Armstrong is coming off the best passing season in program history. For his career, Armstrong ranks second among all Cavs QBs in career passing.

Like it or not, Garrett Shrader is here to stay. Contrary to popular belief, that’s probably a good thing. The throwing ability was there in flashes last season. If Shrader can become a more reliable passer, even marginally, then his game will take off. After all, his running ability was complimented perfectly by All-American Sean Tucker. The tailback carried the offense, and the two of them together morphed the run-pass-option into a run-run-pass-option. The one-two punch in the backfield was practically unmatched all year. Anae is the guy to not only keep that going, but to build on it too.

Syracuse football finishes No. 12 in final 2021 ACC Power Rankings - The Juice Online (the juice; Vescovi)

With the 2021 regular season now in the books, let’s check in with where all ACC teams stand in our final Power Rankings of the year.

1. Pittsburgh
What a whirlwind year for the Pitt Panthers. After a huge victory in Knoxville, the pitchforks were out in Oakland after the Panthers dropped a home game vs Western Michigan. They finished the season 9-1 after that game, winning the ACC Championship game en route to the best season for the program since 1981. The Panthers will look to keep the momentum rolling in Atlanta when they take on Michigan State in the Peach Bowl. Kenny Pickett will be sitting this one out, but the defense matches up well with the Spartans. Look for some fireworks in this matchup.

2. Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons had an extremely successful season that culminated in a trip the ACC Championship game. The game didn’t go as they wanted it but the program rose to number 9 in the rankings and finished with double digit wins for the first time under Dave Clawson. The future is very bright for this team as they bring back several 5th and 6th year seniors in addition to Sam Hartman. Look for the Deacs to challenge their peers in the Atlantic next season. In the meantime, they have a very formidable matchup against Texas AM in the Gator Bowl. The Aggies will be without their starting QB as he elected to transfer, giving Wake an advantage.

3. Clemson

Down year in Clemson, South Carolina? B###S###! Sure, it took the Tigers longer than anyone wanted for the offense to match the defense, but by the end of the season Dabo Swinney had this team rolling. They won nine games and only lost games to ranked teams, all away from Death Valley. It is Clemson’s fault that expectations are sky high for the program, but that kind of pressure is a privilege, one they obtain from being so successful.
This team will be lethal next year and the Atlantic will be as strong as ever. 2022 should be fun for Dabo Swinney and his peers.

4. NC State
The Wolfpack had a tremendous year and finally beat Clemson, something they hadn’t done since 2011. The Pack dropped winnable games against Miami, Miss. St., and Wake Forest, which put a damper on the season, but they defeated arch nemesis UNC in season finale in miraculous fashion. They return a ton of weapons next year on both sides of the ball and will be a force in the Atlantic.

5. Miami
What an offseason in Miami. After Manny Diaz was able guide the team to a 7-5 record despite losing to FSU, Mario Cristobal thought it was the right time to come home and replaced him as head coach. There is a lot to like about the Hurricanes football team for next year based off of their 2021 performance, but first and foremost it starts at QB. Tyler Van Dyke is a bonafide stud and should carry this team. But change is never easy and expectations have ever been higher after these moves in the offseason. The team played well this year and that is why they slot in at No. 5 in the power rankings.

6. Louisville
It was an up and down year for Louisville, but I’m giving them the edge in the Power Rankings over the other 6-6 teams because when the Cardinals were up, they were really up. The Cardinals lost five games to ranked teams and lost the other by one to a high scoring Virginia team. This team was very close to being 9-3 but let some opportunities slip away. Look for them to learn to win in 2022 and contribute to the loaded Atlantic. Having Malik Cunningham returning will keep them in every game next season.

7. Virginia Tech
Not a lot to cheer about in Blacksburg this year, but they managed to defeat their rival Virginia to go bowling. A new coach will be manning the position in 2022, so ideally the boos from the home crowd should stop. But Justin Fuente left the roster in disarray and the rest of the division isn’t slowing down any time soon.

8. North Carolina
Not a great season for Mack Brown’s bunch, but they clawed their way to 6-6. Did they waste the talent of the best QB in recent program history? That is a question for people smarter than I. The recruiting has been better but it will take time to break in those players while the decision making this year has been questionable. But the Tarheels dismantled UVA, so they get to be above them in the rankings.

9. Virginia
At one point the Cavaliers were 6-2 and heading to Provo for a nationally televised games against BYU. Nothing went right for this team after they boarded that flight. Virginia lost their next four games and then eventually their coach to end the season. A darkhorse for the Coastal prior to the aforementioned trip, UVA does not resemble that team at seasons end.

10. Boston College
Boston College had a reasonably decent year, but the best win they got came after the season when Phil Jurkovec announced he would be coming back in 2022. The Eagles struggled mightily without him but finished the season 6-2 with him at QB, including winning three of their last four. I still am not sold on this team being a contender next season but improving upon 6-6 is doable.

11. Florida State
Progress was made in Tallahassee this season. It was enough to get Mike Norvell a one-year contract extension, though that was done for recruiting purposes. If he does not get this team bowl-eligible in 2022 he won’t be the coach for the Seminoles in 2023. He has some talent but the QB position is a question mark. The current recruiting class has five highly regarded linemen that should shore up the future trenches, but it’s hard to see them having an impact in the short term.

12. Syracuse

I wrote back in October that this team was the most improved in the country, only to have them completely fall flat to end the season. They lost their last three games and none were all that close. The team has some solid pieces to work with in Sean Tucker and Garrett Shrader with a strong defense returning in 2022. The team should get over the hump with regards to bowl-eligibility but if you have been following my rankings up to this point you will see that I pointed out that the Atlantic is going to be loaded in 2022. If you skipped right to the Syracuse section then let me repeat: Wake, Clemson, NCST, BC, and Louisville are going to be very difficult to beat next year as the Atlantic is loaded. The Orange cannot drop a game against UConn, Wagner, Purdue, BC, UVA, and FSU if they want to make a bowl game and keep Dino Babers’ job.

13. Georgia Tech
It was a down year for the Yellow Jackets this year, which is concerning in year three of the Geoff Collins experiment. They cleaned house on the offensive side of the ball and removed a few defensive coaches but their star running back transferred out. Hopefully 2022 is better for this team.

14. Duke
David Cutcliffe is one of the best to ever do it. He took on this challenge at Duke and elevated the program from the dead. He will forever get credit for the job that he did for everyone involved. It was just too much to expect this team to be competitive with the roster he compiled, which is no shot at him. Recruiting football players to Duke is a very difficult task and Mike Elko has inherited no small task in regards to the rebuild he faces. The Blue Devils went 0-8 in conference play, and any improvement in that record in 2022 should be considered a small victory.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball on Apple Podcasts (apple,.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse had two games canceled the other day due to a COVID outbreak. Buddy Boeheim hinted on a recent radio show appearance that the Orange could add another game soon. Plus, what are the lessons SU should take away from last year's COVID pause to make sure they don't get off to a slow start out of the layoff? Also, Syracuse is rumored to be interested in former Virginia offensive coordinator and current QB coach Robert Anae and Jason Beck to fill the same roles. Are these the best possible hires for the Orange given the state of the program?

Tim Leonard and Tyler Aki discuss it all and more on the Tuesday edition of the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Indiana sets up future home-and-home series with ACC program (saturdaytradition.com;' Fangman)

One B1G school has a new power 5 opponent for the back half of the decade. Indiana has scheduled a home and home with ACC opponent Virginia for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

Indiana and Virginia recently had a home and home in the 2017-2018 seasons. Indiana won both meetings; The Hoosiers won the first meeting in 2017 34-17 in Charlottesville, VA. In 2018 in Bloomington, IN., The Hoosiers won a tightly contested battle 20-16.

Indiana had one of the more disappointing years in the B1G as they started preseason ranked in the AP Top-25 poll. The Hoosiers finished 2-10 and winless in the B1G with an 0-9 record.

Virginia this season finished 6-6 on the season and 4-4 in ACC play. The Cavaliers are playing in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Dec. 29 at 11:00 am ET.

With the B1G Pac-12 ACC Alliance, it’ll be interesting to see if more home and homes are scheduled throughout the 3 conferences in the back half of this decade and beyond.

Who is on the Rutgers big board at defensive coordinator? (usatoday.com; Dyer)

Rutgers has an opening on their coaching staff, with Monday’s report that Robb Smith will not be returning as defensive coordinator.

The report from New Jersey Advanced Media has Smith landing at Duke in the ACC. In an interesting tidbit, James Kratch notes in the report that Rutgers did not renew Smith’s contract.

It is a big opening for Rutgers and it will be telling to see how Schiano fills the position. There are interesting names on staff who could step up and get the position and there will likely be plenty of interest from around college football and perhaps even the professional ranks for this position.

The 2022 recruiting class has some big pieces coming in that could go a long way towards helping a rather average Rutgers defense take a big step forward in the coming seasons. That could make the Scarlet Knights open position a very interesting one to some names out there.

Elijah Robinson

Let’s start with the pipe dream candidate. Robinson is one of two home run hires, as a good of a defensive line coach as he is a recruiter. And Robinson is lights out in both regards.
The problem with Robinson is that because he is so good as a positions coach and is an ace recruiter, he’s being compensated. The man is getting paid. And Rutgers may not have the budget to land Robinson, who along with secondary coach Fran Brown would be as dynamic a duo in recruiting as any program in the country.

Fran Brown

This would be the smart move here from Rutgers as Brown is becoming a hot commodity in coaching circles. He was a finalist for the recently filled position at Temple and for good reason.
Like Robinson, the Rutgers defensive back coach is a top positional coach who recruits very well. Brown is ready for this next step and is the money-line favorite to get the job.

Jim Panagos

If for some reason Brown doesn’t land the coordinator position and should Schiano want to keep things internal in filling the role, then Panagos is the logical choice.
He is a solid recruiter, knows the defense well (this is his second stint with Schiano), has had two stints in the NFL and is highly-respected and experienced. He makes a lot of sense and has a clear comfort level with Schiano.

Larry Johnson

Like the forementioned Robinson, Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson is a stretch here. But if Rutgers could come up with enough money, could Johnson finally get his shot at being a defensive coordinator?
His experience at Ohio State and prior to that Penn State would be invaluable. He is also an incredible recruiter and experienced.
On a bit of a younger staff, Johnson’s knowledge and insight would be welcome. He worked with Schiano at Ohio State when the Rutgers head coach was the Buckeyes defensive coordinator.

Waitress at Syracuse diner surprised with $1,400 tip; Customers plan to help other restaurant workers (PS; Kirk)

A group of Central New York residents surprised a waitress this weekend with a $1,400 tip.

The waitress, Kristin Paul, who works at The Market Diner in Syracuse, said she had no idea she was going to get a tip like that on Saturday.

“They showed up a little at a time,” she said. “I recognized some.”

The customers chatted a little and nothing was unusual, said Paul, who has worked for over 15 years at the diner on Park Street near the Central New York Regional Market.

“I’ve never once seen a group come in and do something so sweet,” she said.

For Paul, it was a “breath of fresh air” after so many months of the pandemic.

“It was like New York City when Covid first hit,” she said. “At seven they’d bang the pots for first responders.”

Paul decided to split the tip with her coworkers.

The extra cash helped her coworkers with the upcoming holiday and even one coworker for recently was in a car accident, Paul said.

“That kind of selfless act brings us back to what Christmas is all about,” Paul said.
