The question was how much change. Dino Babers made the correct decision to fire Sterlin Gilbert, putting Syracuse in the market for an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Sometimes while looking, unexpected events occur that play out in your favor. That is exactly what happened for the Orange as Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall elected to shockingly retire at the end of the season. Suddenly, two highly respected coaches with a history of developing quarterbacks and leading potent offenses became available. Syracuse was able to convince both former Virginia offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck to come lead the Orange offense. Syracuse could not have found better coaches to fill those vacant positions. Anae and Beck are ideal coaches to help improve the Syracuse offense that really struggled down the stretch of last season. The perfect choices to get the most out of Garrett Shrader given their history. Look at their time at BYU. The Cougars offenses averaged 494 yards and 461 yards of offense under Taysom Hill. In Anae's first year, both Hill and BYU's starting running back ran for over 1,200 yards with 17 combined rushing touchdowns. Hill also threw for over 2,900 yards with 19 passing touchdowns. The coaching combo had similar success at Virginia with Bryce Perkins, also a running quarterback. Perkins threw for over 2,600 yards with 25 passing touchdowns while rushing for 900 with nine more scores in 2018. In 2019, Perkins threw for over 3,500 yards with 22 touchdowns while running for over 700 with 11 scores. The point is, Anae and Beck have a history of developing quarterbacks with similar skill sets as Garrett Shrader. The team saw several players opt out including some who received playing time in 2021 but are looking for more in 2022. The transfer portal is good and bad for teams. While it does offer players the opportunity to leave if they feel like they belong elsewhere, it also allows coaches to add players already experienced at that level to join and possibly produce right away. He currently has offers from Tennessee, FSU, Oklahoma, LSU, Auburn, Miami and USC, among others. And while Syracuse at this point might seem like a long shot, having faced him last season, Syracuse knows how talented he is and could help fill a position that lost a lot of experience to graduation. Verse could make an immediate impact on day one. I’d love to see him lining up alongside Caleb Okechukwu on the front line in Orange. [B]Ivan Pace Jr. – Linebacker from Miami (Ohio) University[/B] While speaking about defensive playmakers and depth, adding Pace to line up along with Mikel Jones, Marlowe Wax and Stefon Thompson would help keep that pressure on quarterbacks. The Bruins’ DB is team leader in tackles and tackles for loss. Add in Otito Ogbonnia, who previously declared for the NFL draft and will skip the Holiday Bowl, UCLA is down 13.5 TFL players. There have been a handful of other players that will be inactive for UCLA because of COVID. While most are purely backups, having any positives cases at this point makes you worry about others. It’s an elegant approach to the cuisine, with a large tapas menu intended for sharing, and a smaller lineup of entrees. This is a social dining experience. Sure, you can have an intimate dinner for two, but it’s a menu built best for groups of four or more. Perched on a hill overlooking Seneca Lake, Dano’s is an Austrian-inspired wine bistro with flavors of Central Europe. Both focus on regional Mexican dishes without diluting their flavors for marketability. The families in these kitchens cook their recipes as they know them, with earthy moles, sinus-clearing heat, and housemade chorizo and tortillas. There are Mexican restaurants and Mexican-American restaurants. We opted for a chef’s choice entree and were rewarded with a short rib ragu with peas and cherries over housemade bucatini pasta.
