Made with melted chocolate, cocoa powder, or both, chocolate cakes were first baked in the late nineteenth century. There are an endless amount of types of them, which makes the day easy and fun to celebrate. The roots of chocolate cake go back to 1764 when Dr. James Baker of Boston ground cocoa beans with a water-powered mill that had two large millstones, making chocolate. But it was over a century until chocolate cake as we know it today was made. During the first half of the nineteenth century, whenever something was called chocolate cake, it was a yellow or spice cake that went along with a chocolate drink. During the second quarter of the nineteenth century, white or yellow cake with chocolate icing became known as chocolate cake. In 1828, Coenraad van Houten came up with a way to mechanically extract fat from cocoa liquor, which left him with cocoa butter and some lower fat cocoa, the latter of which was sold as "rock cocoa" or ground into powder. His mechanism, known as a cocoa press, made chocolate much cheaper and more readily available. By the mid-nineteenth century, chocolate was being used in baked goods on a normal basis, although the first print record of it happening dates all the way back to 1779. SU News What Syracuse Football Is Getting In Alijah Clark – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May) While the Syracuse basketball team is falling apart, Syracuse football is adding to its roster. On Tuesday, Alijah Clark announced he is transferring to the Orange. The defensive back comes to SU from Rutgers where he played one season and appeared in seven games. He attended the same high school as current Syracuse defensive back Duce Chestnut. One can only assume their connection was a major reason why Clark chose SU. You can also assume their chemistry will lead to good things on the field. Coming out of school, he was the No. 5 player in the state of New Jersey, two spots better than Chestnut. Clark was also the No. 277 overall recruit and No. 22 at his position. Clark picked Rutgers, his home state school, but was also recruited by Syracuse, Boston College Maryland, Miami, Michigan, NC State, West Virginia and others. During his true freshman campaign, Clark played seven games, totaling six tackles and snagging an interception. He played against Syracuse back in September, but did not log any statistics. ... Before Calabrese could get close to the goal, Batherson quickly muscled Calabrese off the puck and won possession back for the Orange. Moments later on the other half of the ice, Batherson collected a missed shot from Shelby Calof and cycled it back to Tatum White, who found Calof for a follow-up shot and a goal. Calof scored, and Batherson’s assist helped Syracuse take a 4-3 lead against Princeton. Batheron has been an integral part of SU’s hockey team this season, recording 22 blocks — fifth-highest on the team. But before the ice hockey season began, Batherson started playing an important part for another SU athletics team. Throughout Syracuse football’s season during the fall, Batherson spent time on the sidelines during practices and games as a hydration assistant, setting up equipment and ensuring players received adequate fluids. “It definitely was a great experience just seeing how professional everything is, especially with the football team,” Batherson said. “That was a different atmosphere for me being a hockey player.” Batherson was one of roughly 10 students working under Alison Mitchell, an assistant athletic trainer for the football and tennis teams at Syracuse. Batherson, a health and exercise science major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, first heard about the opportunity through the ice hockey team’s athletic trainer. “I was kind of shocked to be honest,” Mitchell said of Batherson’s commitment to becoming a hydration assistant. “She’s the first student-athlete that we’ve had.” ... College Football Bowl Ties, Affiliations For Each Conference 2022-2023 (yahoo.com) [HEADING=1]College Football Bowl Tie-Ins, Affiliations 2023-2023[/HEADING] – The College Football Playoff hasn’t expanded yet, so just as before, the top four teams according to the final College Football Playoff rankings will make the mini-tournament. North Carolina 45, Miami 42 – Oct. 16[/HEADING] Lofty preseason expectations for North Carolina were undone from the outset, but the Tar Heels managed to deliver on some of the fall's most memorable games. Clemson 19, Boston College 13 – Oct. 2[/HEADING] Perennial ACC pace-setter Clemson reaching 10 wins was among this season's more remarkable accomplishments, given how many nail-biters the Tigers survived along the way. Clemson faced down its third loss of the young season as Boston College drove into the red zone in the final minute. A fumble with the Eagles pushing for what would have been a game-winning touchdown may well have saved Clemson's season. [HEADING=2]8. Miami 38, Pittsburgh 34 – Oct. 30[/HEADING] Kenny Pickett emerged as one of the nation's best quarterbacks in 2021, and against Miami, he went for more than 500 yards. But the Hurricanes' defense denied the Panthers a fourth-quarter touchdown to preserve the outstanding performance of Miami's own young quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke passed for 426 yards and three touchdowns in one of Miami's signature wins of a strange yet promising season. [HEADING=2]7. Pittsburgh 30, North Carolina 23 (OT) – Nov. 13 [/HEADING] Kenny Pickett passed for 346 yards and three touchdowns, and Pitt jumped to a 23-7 lead over North Carolina. The ACC's preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, Sam Howell, wasn't going to go out easy: He passed for two touchdowns and rushed for a third, and North Carolina battled back from the 16-point deficit to force overtime. Wake Forest 40, Syracuse 37 – Oct. 9[/HEADING] Oct. 9 was the single wildest day of the 2021 season; so much so, Wake Forest's win at Syracuse may have flown under the national radar. Even if it didn't command a ton of attention, this was a thriller that showcased two of the ACC's premier offensive players at their best. Running back Sean Tucker went off for three Syracuse rushing touchdowns, while Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman passed for 330 yards, totaled four touchdowns, and hooked up with wide receiver A.T. Perry for all three of his passing scores. ... SHOCKER! Why would the Big Ten consider doing such a thing? Two words: The Alliance. When you only play 12 games a year, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 are figuring out what the ACC already knew: there's a huge difference between 8 and 9 conference games. On the other hand, they're also figuring out something the ACC hasn't come to grips with (yet): having divisions locks down too many games. The Big Ten currently has East and West divisions and plays a nine-game conference schedule that includes three cross-divisional matchups, but such changes would allow for the Big Ten to schedule yearly games with the ACC and Pac-12 as part of an alliance that was formed last summer. "We've had several conversations," Barta said. "One of the things that we're watching is whether it's related to The Alliance, which we're talking through, and/or what gives us the best opportunity to have the most success in the College Football Playoff format? "We’re wondering if we're going to know what the format is before we have to make that decision. So, we're kind of waiting to see where that lands. But we have had active conversations about the schedule beyond 2022." The news comes exactly two weeks after the Big Ten adjusted its 2022 conference football schedule to account for alternations made during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Big Ten plays a nine-game conference schedule that features six divisional and three cross-divisional games. However, the league could reevaluate its positioning after its media rights expire following the 2022 season. "We've had several conversations," said Barta. We're wondering if we're going to know what the format is before we have to make that decision ... but we have had active conversations about the schedule beyond 2022." The Alliance adds another level of intrigue to the situation. The three involved conferences -- the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 -- expressed interest in scheduling nonconference matchups heading forward. Eliminating a conference game could be a way to free up extra opportunities for nonconference matchups, especially for a team like Iowa, which has a standing nonconference game against Iowa State. ... Other Customers serve up thousands of dollars for beloved CNY pizza shop after fire (PS $; Doran) On the day Theresa Wheatley moved into her Solvay home in 2019, she bought pizza from Bianchi’s Pizza Pad for the young people who helped carry in boxes and furniture.
