Welcome to National Chocolate Cake Day!

There is no shame in overindulging in dessert today, as long as it is chocolate cake! Made with melted chocolate, cocoa powder, or both, chocolate cakes were first baked in the late nineteenth century. There are an endless amount of types of them, which makes the day easy and fun to celebrate.

The roots of chocolate cake go back to 1764 when Dr. James Baker of Boston ground cocoa beans with a water-powered mill that had two large millstones, making chocolate. But it was over a century until chocolate cake as we know it today was made. During the first half of the nineteenth century, whenever something was called chocolate cake, it was a yellow or spice cake that went along with a chocolate drink. During the second quarter of the nineteenth century, white or yellow cake with chocolate icing became known as chocolate cake.

In 1828, Coenraad van Houten came up with a way to mechanically extract fat from cocoa liquor, which left him with cocoa butter and some lower fat cocoa, the latter of which was sold as "rock cocoa" or ground into powder. His mechanism, known as a cocoa press, made chocolate much cheaper and more readily available. By the mid-nineteenth century, chocolate was being used in baked goods on a normal basis, although the first print record of it happening dates all the way back to 1779.

What Syracuse Football Is Getting In Alijah Clark – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

While the Syracuse basketball team is falling apart, Syracuse football is adding to its roster. On Tuesday, Alijah Clark announced he is transferring to the Orange. The defensive back comes to SU from Rutgers where he played one season and appeared in seven games.

Clark is listed at 6-foot-1, 195 lbs. and was raised in Camden, NJ. He attended the same high school as current Syracuse defensive back Duce Chestnut. One can only assume their connection was a major reason why Clark chose SU. You can also assume their chemistry will lead to good things on the field.

Coming out of school, he was the No. 5 player in the state of New Jersey, two spots better than Chestnut. Clark was also the No. 277 overall recruit and No. 22 at his position. Clark picked Rutgers, his home state school, but was also recruited by Syracuse, Boston College Maryland, Miami, Michigan, NC State, West Virginia and others.

During his true freshman campaign, Clark played seven games, totaling six tackles and snagging an interception. He played against Syracuse back in September, but did not log any statistics.

After ice hockey practice early in the morning, Mae Batherson would rush over to the football field to assist the athletic training staff.

Defender Mae Batherson doubles as hydration assistant for Syracuse football (DO; writer unknown)

Mae Batherson was the lone Syracuse defenseman in position when Princeton’s Daniella Calabrese extended her stick to intercept a pass. Before Calabrese could get close to the goal, Batherson quickly muscled Calabrese off the puck and won possession back for the Orange.

Moments later on the other half of the ice, Batherson collected a missed shot from Shelby Calof and cycled it back to Tatum White, who found Calof for a follow-up shot and a goal.

Calof scored, and Batherson’s assist helped Syracuse take a 4-3 lead against Princeton. Batheron has been an integral part of SU’s hockey team this season, recording 22 blocks — fifth-highest on the team.

But before the ice hockey season began, Batherson started playing an important part for another SU athletics team. Throughout Syracuse football’s season during the fall, Batherson spent time on the sidelines during practices and games as a hydration assistant, setting up equipment and ensuring players received adequate fluids.

“It definitely was a great experience just seeing how professional everything is, especially with the football team,” Batherson said. “That was a different atmosphere for me being a hockey player.”

Batherson was one of roughly 10 students working under Alison Mitchell, an assistant athletic trainer for the football and tennis teams at Syracuse.

Batherson, a health and exercise science major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, first heard about the opportunity through the ice hockey team’s athletic trainer.

“I was kind of shocked to be honest,” Mitchell said of Batherson’s commitment to becoming a hydration assistant. “She’s the first student-athlete that we’ve had.”

College Football Bowl Ties, Affiliations For Each Conference 2022-2023 (yahoo.com)

College Football Bowl Tie-Ins, Affiliations 2023-2023

– The College Football Playoff hasn’t expanded yet, so just as before, the top four teams according to the final College Football Playoff rankings will make the mini-tournament. This year, the two CFP semifinal bowls are the Fiesta and Peach on Saturday, December 31st.

– The two CFP semifinal winners will play in the College Football Playoff National Championship in Los Angeles on Monday, January 9th, 2023.

– The highest-ranked conference champion from the American Athletic, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt will automatically get one spot in Cotton Bowl if it’s not in the College Football Playoff.

– The Rose Bowl will be the Big Ten and Pac-12, the Orange Bowl will be ACC vs a team from the Big Ten or SEC – Notre Dame could go to the Orange, but not as an ACC team – and the Sugar Bowl will be Big 12 vs SEC.

Again, the Fiesta and Peach are College Football Playoff games, leaving one spot open in the Cotton for a team to likely play a Group of Five team.

ACC Bowl Tie-Ins, Affiliations

Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as it’s within one game of the team eligible for the slot. However, it’s not eligible to go to the Orange Bowl as an ACC team.

The ACC Champion will automatically go to the Orange Bowl if it’s not selected for the College Football Playoff. If the top ACC team is in the CFP, the highest-ranked available team is in the Orange.

Like last year, the ACC bowl slots will mostly be based on the matchups that make the most sense and will potentially generate the most interest.

ACC Football: Best Games of 2021 (athlonsports.com; Kensing)

One of the few seeming inevitabilities in the unpredictable sport of college football has been Clemson dominating the Atlantic Coast Conference. The emergence of new conference title contenders in 2021 contributed to a wholly wild season, as Pittsburgh and Wake Forest played their way into the ACC Championship Game.

Some outstanding contests on the way to an unpredictable ACC title tilt shaped the 2021 campaign. The conference certainly offered more than just 10 excellent games, but the following contests stand out.

10 Best ACC Games of 2021

10. North Carolina 45, Miami 42 – Oct. 16

Lofty preseason expectations for North Carolina were undone from the outset, but the Tar Heels managed to deliver on some of the fall's most memorable games. Among them was a wild shootout win over Miami in which the Hurricanes rallied from multiple double-digit-point deficits before coming up short.

9. Clemson 19, Boston College 13 – Oct. 2

Perennial ACC pace-setter Clemson reaching 10 wins was among this season's more remarkable accomplishments, given how many nail-biters the Tigers survived along the way. Clemson faced down its third loss of the young season as Boston College drove into the red zone in the final minute. A fumble with the Eagles pushing for what would have been a game-winning touchdown may well have saved Clemson's season.

8. Miami 38, Pittsburgh 34 – Oct. 30

Kenny Pickett emerged as one of the nation's best quarterbacks in 2021, and against Miami, he went for more than 500 yards. But the Hurricanes' defense denied the Panthers a fourth-quarter touchdown to preserve the outstanding performance of Miami's own young quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke passed for 426 yards and three touchdowns in one of Miami's signature wins of a strange yet promising season.

7. Pittsburgh 30, North Carolina 23 (OT) – Nov. 13

Kenny Pickett passed for 346 yards and three touchdowns, and Pitt jumped to a 23-7 lead over North Carolina. The ACC's preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, Sam Howell, wasn't going to go out easy: He passed for two touchdowns and rushed for a third, and North Carolina battled back from the 16-point deficit to force overtime. Pickett delivered in overtime with his final touchdown to seal the win and keep Pitt in the ACC Coastal race.

6. Syracuse 41, Virginia Tech 36 – Oct. 23

Syracuse and Virginia Tech combined for 31 fourth-quarter points, 21 of which came from the Orange in a wild comeback win. Quarterback Garrett Shrader was electric with 236 passing yards, 174 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns.

5. Wake Forest 40, Syracuse 37 – Oct. 9

Oct. 9 was the single wildest day of the 2021 season; so much so, Wake Forest's win at Syracuse may have flown under the national radar. Even if it didn't command a ton of attention, this was a thriller that showcased two of the ACC's premier offensive players at their best. Running back Sean Tucker went off for three Syracuse rushing touchdowns, while Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman passed for 330 yards, totaled four touchdowns, and hooked up with wide receiver A.T. Perry for all three of his passing scores.

SHOCKER! UNC has the least amount of players on the ACC's All-Academic Football Team - Pack Insider (packinsider.com; Wolferetti)

No way! This can’t be right!

You’re telling me that the school that was creating fake classes for their athletes just a few years ago isn’t churning out elite student-athletes?

As hard as that is to believe, it’s true.

Yesterday, the ACC released their All-Academic Football team, and here is how it broke down.

Clemson – 12
Wake – 11
Duke – 9
BC – 8
NC State – 7
GT – 7
Syracuse – 7
VT – 7
UVA – 6
Pitt – 5
Louisville – 4
FSU – 4
Miami – 4
UNC – 2

Not only did they finish 3rd to last in the Coastal Division, but they also finished dead last in the All-Academic Team. I’d chalk that up to an overall season of failure for Mack Brown and company.

For NC State it was…
Cory Durden, Grant Gibson, Trenton Gill, Daniel Joseph, Dylan McMahon, Isaiah Moore and Joe Shimko.

Good work, fellas!

B1G Considering Divisionless Scheduling (RX; HM)

B1G Considering Divisionless Scheduling

According to CBS Sports writer Shehan Jeyarajah, the Big Ten is considering the elimination of divisions.

The Big Ten is considering scheduling models that could eliminate divisions and reduce conference play to eight games, Iowa athletic director Gary Barta told The Athletic's Scott Dochterman.
The Big Ten plays a nine-game conference schedule that features six divisional and three cross-divisional games. However, the league could reevaluate its positioning after its media rights expire following the 2022 season.

Why would the Big Ten consider doing such a thing? Two words: The Alliance.

The Alliance adds another level of intrigue to the situation. The three involved conferences -- the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 -- expressed interest in scheduling nonconference matchups heading forward. Eliminating a conference game could be a way to free up extra opportunities for nonconference matchups...
When you only play 12 games a year, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 are figuring out what the ACC already knew: there's a huge difference between 8 and 9 conference games. On the other hand, they're also figuring out something the ACC hasn't come to grips with (yet): having divisions locks down too many games.
That's why JFann over at All Sports Discussion writes: the Big 10 is discussing dropping divisions; the ACC should, too. He's 100% right!
I find the timing interesting, too: "following the 2022 season". At this time, there are no ACC games scheduled against Pac-12 opponents for 2023, but there are plenty of ACC-vs-Big Ten games already under contract:

SEC added Exit Fee. No one knew. (RX; HM)

SEC added Exit Fee. No one knew.

Business of College Sports reports that the SEC Quietly Adds Exit Fee to Conference Bylaws
...According to the SEC’s 2021-22 Bylaws, the new language was adopted January 14, 2021.
The additions to Section 3 of the conference bylaws begin with a requirement to give at least two years’ notice:

*3.1.4 Withdrawal from Membership. A member may only withdraw from membership in the Conference after providing written notice to the President and the Commissioner of the date of its withdrawal at least two years prior to the date on which the withdrawal will be effective. The withdrawal notice must specify a withdrawal date of July 15 in the year in which the withdrawal will be effective. [Adopted: 1/14/21]

The biggest change of all though is the whopping $30-45 million exit fee the conference will now impose. Here is that section in full:

3.2 WITHDRAWAL FEE
*3.2.1 Obligation to Pay Withdrawal Fee. A member that provides notice of withdrawal from the Conference as required by Section 3.1.4 shall pay a withdrawal fee to the Conference of $30 million on or before the effective date of the withdrawal. [Adopted: 1/14/21]
*3.2.2 Additional Withdrawal Fee. A member that withdraws from the Conference without providing notice of withdrawal as required by Section 3.1.4 shall pay a withdrawal fee of $40 million to the Conference immediately upon providing notice of withdrawal (or if no notice is provided, as of the effective date of such withdrawal). [Adopted: 1/14/21]

Report: Big Ten Considering Eight-Game Conference Schedule, Eliminating Divisions (SI; Lind)

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta recently told The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman that the Big Ten is considering eliminating divisions and reducing the number of conference games to eight as soon as the 2023 college football season.

The Big Ten currently has East and West divisions and plays a nine-game conference schedule that includes three cross-divisional matchups, but such changes would allow for the Big Ten to schedule yearly games with the ACC and Pac-12 as part of an alliance that was formed last summer.

"We've had several conversations," Barta said. "One of the things that we're watching is whether it's related to The Alliance, which we're talking through, and/or what gives us the best opportunity to have the most success in the College Football Playoff format?

"We’re wondering if we're going to know what the format is before we have to make that decision. So, we're kind of waiting to see where that lands. But we have had active conversations about the schedule beyond 2022."

The news comes exactly two weeks after the Big Ten adjusted its 2022 conference football schedule to account for alternations made during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Included in that announcement was a note about the conference also planning to revise future schedules, which were previously set through 2025.

Customers serve up thousands of dollars for beloved CNY pizza shop after fire (PS $; Doran)

On the day Theresa Wheatley moved into her Solvay home in 2019, she bought pizza from Bianchi’s Pizza Pad for the young people who helped carry in boxes and furniture.

She continued to order from the pizza shop frequently, and so when she heard sirens on a night last December and learned Bianchi’s was on fire, she and her son rushed over to the scene.

“It was tragic,’' Wheatley said as she recalled seeing the flames devour the business that night a few days before Christmas.

She says she didn’t know the owners personally. Yet she wound up helping to coordinate a community fundraising campaign that has raised more than $25,000 for Sam and Lori Mangano, who own the business and are planning to reopen.

The Dec. 20 fire that tore through Bianchi’s Pizza Pad/Bianchi’s Catering on Milton Avenue in Solvay – along with the upstairs tenants’ home – left little in its wake but scorched walls and soaked rubble.

A month later, rebuilding has begun. It’s a slow process, but the Manganos and their daughter Olivia, who is 18, are chipping away at it every day.

“It’s overwhelming - all the support we’ve got,’’ Sam Mangano said. “We like to help out the community, and now they’re giving it back to us. It means so much.”
