Welcome to Geek Pride Day!

Geeks and geek culture are celebrated and promoted today. The day began in 2006, but various precursors came before it. The Geek Pride Festival, organized by Tim McEachern, was held at a bar in Albany, New York, from 1998 to 2000. Dick Morley, the "father" of the programmable logic controller, organized Geek Pride Days at his retreat in New Hampshire, beginning in 2001. The Geek Pride Day we celebrate today originated in Spain, coming from an idea from Spanish blogger Germán Martínez in 2006. He chose May 25 as its date because that is the anniversary of the debut of the original Star Wars film, which was released in 1977. In Madrid, 300 self-proclaimed geeks played a game of human Pac-Man together on the day. Rights and responsibilities for geeks were also written up. These included rights such as "the right to not be 'in-style'" and "the right to not like football or any other sport," as well as responsibilities such as "attend every geeky movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else."

Axe: SU QB competition heats up; how I’d bet the win total (quick takes) (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on SU football’s over/under win total, some needed competition in the quarterback room and pondering how much experience will matter while still wondering if you know it’s officially summer when they’re rocking in Weedsport.

QB Won?

Some unexpected and welcome news jolted the Syracuse football community on Tuesday evening as Carlos Del Rio-Wilson announced via Instagram he was taking his talents from Florida to Central New York.

A four-star, dual-threat prospect in the 2021 class, Del Rio-Wilson was ranked No. 146 overall nationally and No. 17 at QB in the country. Del Rio-Wilson did not play for the Gators last season and is listed as 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds.

His commitment reminded that the transfer portal, like Home Depot, is always open to assist in patching roster holes.

The Orange QB room now has a full-tilt competition, and that is a good thing. Syracuse also brought in transfer Dan Villari from Michigan before the spring.

Justin Lamson will also return after a good spring performance but is out indefinitely after an injury.

Garrett Shrader impressed SU fans with his moxie and moves in the running game last season in taking over for Tommy DeVito, but the Orange air attack never materialized.

Syracuse finished last in the ACC and 122nd in the nation with just 153 passing yards per game in 2021.

Syracuse football boasts high returning production, improved SP+ ranking (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange were a decent team on the gridiron last year that fell just short of a bowl appearance. The good news is that much of that bunch will return for another go in 2022 - the 9th most in the nation in fact.

Updated college football returning production rankings. Teams in green have risen by 15+ spots since Feb, teams in red have fallen by 15+, teams in bold have done so by 30+. pic.twitter.com/hZZ77DhJ47

17 of last season’s 22 starters will return to the Orange in the fall. While it’s not the most consistent ACC roster across the board, both sides of the ball have their share of impact players.

On the offense, Sean Tucker will look to tear up the Dome turf once again following a record-shattering 2021 season. Garrett Shrader will be back under center and while he also helped extensively with his legs last year, new Offensive Coordinator Robert Anae will look to get him more involved in the passing game. Only one offensive player, lineman Airon Servais, graduated from the program.

Meanwhile, Duce Chestnut and Garrett Williams could be one of the best Cornerback duos in all of D1 football this fall. The secondary isn’t a cause of concern here, but the front seven could be. That’s where the other four departing SU starters played, but at least Mikel Jones decided to return and provide some veteran leadership to a group that is otherwise very raw.

All of that puts Syracuse roughly in the middle of the pack in ESPN’s predictions for next season:

Syracuse Football Lands Florida Transfer QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (youtube; video; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse football just landed Florida transfer QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. Brad Klein and Matt Bonaparte detail what this move means for the program, and where he stands on the depth chart. Is he the new starter? Plus, what kind of player will he be?

Syracuse football: Ex-Florida QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson commits to Orange (247sports.com; Kosko)

Former Florida quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson has a new college home. Del Rio-Wilson announced his commitment to Syracuse University on his Twitter page. Del Rio-Wilson did not play last season, as he redshirted and the Gators bounced between Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson at quarterback. But, Del Rio-Wilson came into the program with some hype as a former four-star prospect. He made his commitment to the Orange official with a statement on social media.

“First, thank you to all the teams that reached out and all the coaches that helped me out!!,” Del Rio-Wilson wrote on Twitter. “(Praying emoji and heart emoji). Now Let’s play football!!!! #starvingtoprove (Raised eyebrow emoji). @CuseFootball @CoachBabersCuse @Coach_Beck7 @CoachAnae.”

Del Rio-Wilson previously sent a message to the Florida Gators fan base after electing to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

"First of all I would like to thank all of gator nation/gator family for welcoming me in since the beginning you are probably the best Fanbase in the world I will always had love for you guys," Del Rio-Wilson wrote in a tweet announcing his intent to transfer. "I would also like to thank all the coaches for giving me the opportunity and an incredible experience. But after long discussion with my family we feel it's best that I enter the transfer portal at this time. Thank you for everything gator family!! Go gators!"

As a member of the Class of 2021, Del Rio-Wilson was a four-star prospect out of Cartersville, (Ga.) High School according to the 247Sports Composite. He was the No. 16 overall prospect in Georgia, the No. 17 quarterback prospect in the class and the No. 146 overall prospect in the class.

Think Syracuse football can make a bowl game? You can make some money from Vegas (msn.com; Carlson)

Sportsbooks across the country have begun to release their over-under win totals for the upcoming college football season and they don’t seem to think the public has much faith in the Orange, with the early bar generally being set between four and 4.5 wins.

Babers will enter the season with one of the country’s hottest seats for a head coach, having qualified for a bowl game in just one of his six seasons with the Orange, with a substantial shuffling of assistant coaches for the second straight year.

While it’s unclear how successful he’ll need to be this season to cool his seat down this season, he’ll probably have to hit the over to satisfy even the most understanding Orange fan.

The sportsbooks PointBet and Bet Online have set their over-under at 4.5, while Ceasers was the most pessimistic for the Orange, setting the line at 4.

The reasons to bet both for and against Syracuse this year are obvious.

The Orange went 5-7 last year and ranks No. 9 in the country in returning production, according to a formula created by ESPN’s Bill Connelly. Teams that return a substantial amount or production from the previous year are traditionally prime candidates to show improvement. Sean Tucker returns as one of the country’s best running backs. Mikel Jones returns as one of the ACC’s top linebackers.

But an upgraded Syracuse team will also face a vastly upgraded schedule. Connelly’s SP+ formula, which attempts to project the quality of teams, pegs Syracuse at No. 57.

Clemson Tidbits: Permanent Football Rivals, ACC TV Revenue, Saban-Fisher Feud (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

Relatively speaking it has been a disappointing year for Clemson’s three primary sports (football, basketball, and baseball). The football team missed the playoff for the first time since 2014, the basketball was never really in tournament contention, and the baseball team is fighting for life to crack the NCAA tournament field. While soccer delivered a national championship and softball is making a nice run, my focus is always on the big three so let’s hit a couple topics related to them.

Football

I recently wrote about the ACC’s likely move to dissolve divisions and assign each team three permanent rivals they’d play annually. That would allow them to play the remaining 10 teams every other year and visit their stadium at least once per four years. I think this is a huge upgrade for two reasons. Firstly, getting more variety adds interest to the schedule. Secondly, some of the current Atlantic division opponents are not good fits for Clemson’s schedule, namely Syracuse and Boston College. They are private schools far away that don’t have major football followings. There are some somewhat interesting BC/Clemson ties with the O’Rourke-McFadden Trophy, but it is at least a little forced. Getting fewer games against them (and Wake Forest) and more against Miami, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina makes the season more fun.

Here’s where I think the ACC should start with permanent rival assignments:

On another note, the ACC released the financial figures for the TV deal. There’s good news and bad news and it speaks to the rapidly evolving nature of college football:

Wake Forest, NC State or Clemson: Which Team Wins the ACC Atlantic in 2022? (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

Most preseason debates surrounding the ACC in previous years were relatively short. After all, it was obvious Clemson was the front-runner and a contender for the national title. However, for the first time since the 2014 season, a team other than the Tigers represented the ACC Atlantic in the conference title game last year.

Wake Forest won the division, with coach Dabo Swinney's team finishing third in the Atlantic at 6-2 in league play. Offensive problems slowed Clemson last season, but this program should be in the mix to get back to the top of the division with a dominant defense in place. The Demon Deacons are still a threat to win the conference title again, especially with quarterback Sam Hartman returning to lead one of the ACC's top offenses. NC State knocked off Clemson and finished 6-2 in the league last year. Coach Dave Doeren's squad brings back 17 starters - the most of any team in the conference - and should push both Wake Forest and Clemson for the top spot in the Atlantic.

Wake Forest, NC State and Clemson are the three favorites in the Atlantic Division for 2022. But is there a consensus on which team should be the favorite? Athlon's editors and college football contributors debate this topic:

Clemson had one down year and now fans across the ACC are wondering who will be the next dominant team in the conference or if Clemson will return to their glory in 2022.

CNY’s Covid rate plunges from highest to lowest in the state in 6 weeks, setting tone for nation (PS; Coin)

Central New York went from having the highest Covid-19 rate in the state to the lowest in just six weeks.

Cases soared in April as the region became the first hotspot in the U.S for new, highly contagious strains of the omicron variant. The strains tore through Central New York and started fading only when they started running out of people to infect.

After causing a surge in CNY early this spring, the new strains fanned out across the state, driving up caseloads in the other nine regions of New York even as cases here started to fall.

Now, cases in the rest of the state are heading down.

“We basically were what it looks like when a new variant emerges in a population,” said Chris Morley, a public health professor at Upstate Medical University. “What’s happening in the rest of the state is exactly what happened here -- it’s just happening to them in rippling waves, and it’s going to happen across the country.”

It already is. In mid-April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 14 counties in the United States – 10 of them in Upstate New York – had high community transmission levels of Covid-19. Last week, that number was up to 297 counties nationwide.

The surge in Central New York, health officials later determined, was due to the nation’s first outbreak of two new strains of the omicron variant. Those strains, labeled BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.12, were more infectious than the original omicron variant, which itself was far more contagious than the previous dominant variant, delta.

He'll look good next to Sean Tucker.

Looking at 247, (since we haven't seen most of these guys play) it's confusing because some of them were ranked as "QB", "PRO" and "DUAL" so I listed that and also their overall national ranking.

First, as a comparison: Tommy DeVito was a 4 star #13 PRO and #327 nationally.
Garrett Shrader was a 4 star, #7 DUAL and #238 nationally.
Justin Lamson was a 3 Star #64 QB and #938 nationally.
Dan Villari was a 3 star #42 PRO and #1224 nationally.
Carlos Del Rio Wilson was a 4 star #17 QB and #146 nationally.

Make of that what you will.
