To many, typewriters are a remnant of the past. Truth be told, the patent for the first typewriter was not granted until 1829. Even then, the first typewriter as we know it today wasn’t built until 1867 near Milwaukee.
At their peak, typewriters were essential and sometimes the only way of typing books, articles, and manuscripts neatly. Although they fell out of vogue in the 20th century, the rise in hipster culture has made for a renewed popularity among young people.
Even now, many famous writers use typewriters to hone their creative processes. For instance, George R.R. Martin, Quintin Tarantino, and Jhumpa Lahiri are all well-known typewriter advocates.

A quick take on 2023 linebacker Zyian Moultrie-Goddard committing to Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon:
WHAT HAPPENED: Syracuse picked up a commitment from its top linebacker target in Iona (NY) Preparatory School three-star LB Zyian Moultrie-Goddard. Rated the No. 9 prospect in New York by 247 Sports, Moultrie-Goddard took his (only) official visit to Syracuse last weekend. The Orange had been in early on his recruitment, with assistant coach Nick Monroe leading the charge, having offered him in early 2020.
ANALYSIS: We spoke with John Garcia Jr., Director of SI All-American at Sports Illustrated, earlier in the week on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, and he believes Moultrie-Goddard is a excellent fit for defensive coordinator Tony White’s 3-3-5 system. “He’s an old school linebacker,” Garcia said. “He’s going to play his best football coming downhill. We get lost in the desire for three-down linebackers. That’s still needed, but you still need that classic downhill tone-setting linebacker. He’s got a lot of that in his game, and that’s why he’s become a more coveted recruit over time.” Moultrie-Goddard, who stands at 6-0, 240 pounds, has drawn comparisons to another physical linebacker who has emerged at SU, Marlowe Wax.
HERO: Moultrie-Goddard is SU’s fourth commitment in the 2023 class, and the third from New York, joining defensive lineman Rashard Perry (Buffalo) and tight end David Clement (Albany). Perry is ranked as the Empire State’s No. 3 prospect and Clement, who also took an official visit to Syracuse this past weekend, is No. 6. Three-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers from South (SC) Florence committed in March and will be taking his official visit this weekend.

SU football adds Moultrie-Goddard as 4th commit in class of 2023 (PS; Leiker)
Zyian Moultrie-Goddard announced his commitment to Syracuse football on Wednesday via Twitter.
He’s the fourth player to join the Orange’s 2023 recruiting class. Moultrie-Goddard also has offers from Rutgers, Arizona State, Tennessee and Army, among others.
The 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker from New Rochelle, New York, joins quarterback LaNorris Sellers, defensive lineman Rashard Perry and tight end David Clement in the 2023 class.
He is the third in-state player to join the class. Perry is from Buffalo. Clement is from Albany.
Syracuse currently has the No. 71 recruiting class for 2023, according to 247Sports.
Moultrie-Goddard made an official visit to Syracuse last Friday alongside offensive tackle Deandre Duffus and defensive edge Jalil Smith. Both players are also set to announce their commitments soon — Smith on Friday and Duffus on July 3.

The 5-10, 209-pounder stepped in as a true freshman and had a strong year with 626 yards and four scores on a painful 1-10 team. Last year the offense handed him the ball, and then handed it to him again, and again, and again as he turned into one of the best running backs in college football.Behind an okay – to be nice – offensive line, he rumbled for 1,496 yards and 12 touchdowns – averaging over six yards per carry – and caught 20 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Able to rip off nine 100-yard games in the 12 contests, he was a marked man and defenses still couldn’t stop him.

Syracuse Football: The differences between college and professional fans (itlh; Fiello)
Recently I’ve been thinking about something regarding my fandom for Syracuse football and other teams, and it’s resonated with me in a new light. I’m a New York Mets fan, a half Buffalo Bills fan & half Carolina Panthers fan (long story for another time), and I’m a diehard anything Syracuse University fan.
I’ve always thought it was just that my fandom had levels and the Orange will always be first in my heart. And it could be that’s the reason why oftentimes I’m more optimistic and protective of Syracuse football and other Orange sports than some. However, I also believe it’s because as a 49-year-old man who had a daughter look at colleges once upon a time that maybe I look at college sports differently than I do professional sports.
Let me explain.
When my oldest daughter was in her senior year of high school, she had better than average grades. So as graduation loomed, we as a family looked at what her college experience would be like. And if you’ve ever done this, you know it’s a family experience because your kid wants to go where they’ll achieve their goals but as a parent, you want your kid to feel like they’re cared for and in an environment that will help them prosper.
Then summer rolls around and you’re moving your kid into a dorm or apartment and saying goodbye to them knowing you’ll no longer be able to check on them in their room and say good night. You’ll go to bed hoping they’re happy and working on their goals to be something they wish to be. But there’s a sadness in you as you pull away from the university because you know they’re in part on their own now and you’re hoping you as a family made the best choice for them.

2021 stats: Started the first three games at right guard before being injured at FSU. He missed the next four games but would then return for the rest of the season.
2022 projections: Despite his talent, Tisdale may end up being the sixth lineman to be used in a “plug and play” role. He is in a three-way competition with Dakota Davis and Kalan Ellis for the two starting spots on the right side and may need an injury or a sophomore slump from the latter to jump over. He’s primarily spent time as a guard here but was a great tackle in JUCO. Whether it happens immediately or not, Darius should at least have a handful of starts.
How’d he get here?: He spent two years at Lackawanna Community College (Scranton, PA) before transferring to SU; turned down Pitt, West Virginia and others.
What’d recruiting sites say?: 3 Stars from 247 and ESPN, but only 2 from Rivals

Some takeaways:
FloridaMiami runs South Florida, Florida State rules the panhandle, UCF is king of Central Florida, but the rest of the state is Gator Country.
Georgia
The Bulldogs run this state; Georgia Tech is an also-ran.
South Carolina
Clemson runs the Upstate, while South Carolina rules the rest.
North Carolina
This state is a quilt of fan bases, with UNC holding the majority of counties but NC State, East Carolina, and even Clemson all have sizeable chunks.
Virginia
Except for the counties near Charlottesville, you might as well call it the Commonwealth of Hokies!
Kentucky
Louisville runs the biggest city and surrounding counties, but the Wildcats rule the Bluegrass back woods. (The Cardinals also control part of Indiana on the other side of the Ohio River).
Indiana
It should be no surprise that Notre Dame controls Northern Indiana - and most of Chicagoland, too!
Pennsylvania
Pitt has Western PA - especially right around the city - but the Panthers have surprisingly little support in the rest of the state.

The Big Apple is very fragmented, with a lot of support for both Notre Dame and, to my surprise, Clemson. Syracuse runs most of the Upstate except for the Buffalo area and areas near the U.S. Military Academy (Army).

I can confirm that the crowds at Clemson and Virginia Tech can be intimidating, and I believe that's true for Florida State as well (Doak Campbell is still on my bucket list). I'm not sure about some of those other conferences, though.

More than half of ACC is in top 40 of 2023 football recruiting (scacchoops.com; JFann)
Last week we wrote about Clemson getting red-hot on the recruiting trail. You thought Dabo Swinney was going to let Tiger recruiting slip after a few coaches departed. Clemson is a national brand now.
Clemson isn’t the only ACC team off to a strong summer of recruiting.
Louisville is tearing it up too landing arguably the nation’s number 1 running back in Rueben Owens, and only Clemson has more 4-star+ commits.
Georgia Tech surprisingly is putting together a reasonable class. If this is Geoff Collins’s last year in Atlanta, he’s going to make one great recruiting coordinator somewhere.
Wake Forest and Pittsburgh have parlayed fine 2021 seasons into solid recruiting starts as well.
Think about how that would look in a football season if the ACC had 5 or 6 top 25 teams and 3 or 4 more in the receiving votes category. Don’t let anyone tell you differently, it starts with recruiting.

Miami football 2023 class part of ACC recruiting surge (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)
The Miami football program is one of nine ACC teams whose 2023 recruiting class ranks in the top 35. After multiple recent commitments, Miami has the 33rd ranked 2023 Class. Miami has the seventh-ranked class in the ACC and third in the Coastal Divison. Clemson which is fourth nationally has the top-ranked 2023 ACC Class.
Miami has moved significantly up the rankings in June. The Miami football program has received commitments from tight ends Jackson Carver and Reid Mikeska and quarterback Emory Williams in June to move from the 40s to their current position. Four-star TE Riley Williams is projected to commit to Miami on July 1.
It would be an unusual move to take three TEs in the same Class. Carver, Mikeska and Williams provide different skill sets for Miami. Carver and Mikeska have not been playing football long after growing up playing different sports. Williams is the 2023 77th-ranked player and fourth-ranked TE in the 247 Sports composite rankings.
For Miami to move further up the rankings, they need a higher blue-chip ratio for 2023. Seven of the eight prospects currently committed to Miami for 2023 are three-stars. Clemson currently has a blue-chip ratio of one 2023 five-star commit, four four-stars and two three-stars. Most ACC commits are three-star prospects.

Where Does Georgia Tech's Receiving Corps Rank in the ACC Coastal? - Sports Illustrated Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets News, Analysis and More (SI; Caudell)
After ranking Georgia Tech Football's quarterbacks and running backs in the ACC Coastal, it is now time to do the wide receivers. This is a position that has some talent to be at offensive coordinator Chip Long's disposal, but it is unproven talent.
In these rankings, I am going to include tight ends with the receivers. Georgia Tech added two tight ends via the transfer portal with E.J. Jenkins from South Carolina and Luke Benson from Syracuse, as well as converting former receiver Peje' Harris to tight end.
While the tight ends are bringing optimism, there are some intriguing options at receiver. Last year's leading receiver Malachi Carter is back and Georgia Tech coaches and fans alike are excited about the potential of Leo Blackburn, the 6-5 redshirt freshman.
With all of this being said, how does Georgia Tech's wide receivers and tight ends compare to their divisional opponents? I rank them below

7. DukeLast year's top wide receiver Jake Bobo is gone, as is running back Mateo Durant, who was the third leading receiver on the team. Jalon Calhoun is the top wideout returning for Duke, but this position lacks talent overall and the passing game could be rough in Durham this season.
6. Virginia Tech
Three of the top four receivers on Virginia Tech are gone and that leaves the Hokies with some retooling to do at the skill positions. Kaleb Smith is the top returning receiver and he had 20 catches for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Gallo is also back at tight end.
Having so much production missing out wide could make life tough for the new starting quarterback at Virginia Tech. How well this position does will be an indicator of how good Virginia Tech's offense is.
5. Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech edges out Duke and Virginia Tech due to their talent. Jenkins, Benson, and Harris are an intriguing trio at tight end and could create matchup problems. Blackburn is ready to have a breakout season on the outside and the veteran presence of Carter gives Long options to work with on offense. Kalani Norris and Nate McCollum are two other names to watch.

Virginia Tech football: Two offensive assistants named ‘rising stars’ (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
There is a lot of excitement surrounding Virginia Tech’s new coaching staff under head coach Brent Pry. Offensive line coach Joe Rudolph was one of the best assistant coaching hires of the offseason, but Pry made several shrewd hires.
Recruiting site On3 recently named 65 rising-star assistant coaches in college football. Two Virginia Tech assistant coaches made the list; specifically, it was two offensive assistants. Offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tyler Bowen and quarterbacks coach Brad Glenn were two of the 65 names.

Longtime furniture retailer reopening in CNY after closing Syracuse-area store last year (PS; $; Doran)
Ethan Allen is returning to Central New York after closing a showroom and store nearly a year ago that had operated for more than 50 years.
The former retail location, at 100 Dewey Ave. in DeWitt, was a staple along the East Genesee Street corridor in DeWitt, across from Wegmans. The showroom was Ethan Allen’s only Syracuse-area location.
Now the Danbury, Connecticut-based retailer plans to reopen in DeWitt, this time in a smaller storefront in Marshall’s Plaza. The new showroom is in the outparcel building alongside Lenscrafters and Crumbl Cookies, which is opening this summer.
The new Ethan Allen retail store is scheduled to open this fall, likely sometime in November, said Jared Roth, a third-generation owner who now runs the Victor store, near Rochester.
Roth said the Dewey Avenue location was owned, and then closed, by corporate Ethan Allen. Roth said customers were asking at that store for a location to reopen in Syracuse.
Ethan Allen manufactures its own furniture and offers complimentary interior design service. It also sells a full range of furniture products and decorative accessories through its website ethanallen.com and its network of 300 stores in the U.S. and abroad.
Roth said the new store will be owned by his family, which also once had a furniture store in Camillus. In 1965, his grandfather Robert and great-uncle Bud Roth opened Roth Brothers Manor House at the corner of Kasson Road and West Genesee Street.
