Welcome to The Start of Rosh Hashanah!

Rosh Hashanah takes place on the first day of Tishri, the seventh month in the Hebrew religious calendar. The name means "beginning of the year" in Hebrew, and it is also celebrated as the Jewish New Year, as it is the start of the new year on the Jewish civil calendar. It takes place 163 days after the start of Passover, and is the first day of a ten day period of self-examination and repentance called Yamim Noraim, which ends with Yom Kippur. It is observed by Jews throughout the world and is a public holiday in Israel.

Some celebrate Rosh Hashanah for just a day, but for many, it lasts for two days. It is a day of rest and prayer, where only a limited amount of work can be done. Many people of the Jewish faith take the day off from their jobs, and much time is spent in the synagogue. It is also a day of judgment, where God judges people on their deeds from the past year, and people ask for forgiveness from others for their past deeds as well. A shofar, made from the horn of a ram or another animal, is blown to symbolically wake up people of the Jewish faith and to alert them to and prepare them for God's judgment. In addition, the day is a time of remembrance when the creation of the world is commemorated.

Winners, losers, and I don’t knows from UVA’s loss to Syracuse (streakingthelawn.com; Carey)

In a new series we’ll be doing at times this football season, we’re evaluating individual Virginia Cavaliers on their performances in individual games by categorizing them as “Winners,” “Losers,” or — to add some nuance — “I don’t knows,” from the most recent contest. These will be aided by PFF’s grades for the Wahoos.

With that, let’s jump into looking at the winners, losers, and I don’t knows from the Syracuse loss.

Winners

Syracuse

Just getting this out of the way for the snarky comments, lol. Cuse won this game. The Orange probably didn’t deserve to with their second half performance. But Shrader and company did enough in the final minutes to earn the W. Kudos to them.

Perris Jones

One of the few bright spots for the offense, Jones was the highest graded offensive player for the ‘Hoos according to PFF. He finished with 87 yards on the ground and one touchdown on thirteen carries (6.7 yards per carry) along with one catch for four yards. He should’ve been incorporated into the offensive game plan more, particularly in the first half when the offense couldn’t string together a legitimate scoring drive. But this was another good showing from UVA’s obvious lead back as he’s starting to prove his consistency on a game-to-game basis.

Jestus Johnson

After taking over for starting center Ty Furnish for a drive against ODU, Johnson seemingly seized the job from him against Syracuse after the first few drives. Johnson was billed as the starting center heading into fall camp and while he did struggle a bit in pass protection against the Orange, he was still better than Furnish and looked particularly adept in the run game as he opened up holes for Jones to run through. It will be interesting to see how the staff handles the center position moving forward and whether or not Johnson is the starter versus Duke next week.

John Rudzinksi

While there weren’t many winners for the ‘Hoos on offense, John Rudzinski is the man who probably deserves the most praise in the program at this moment in time. Through four games he’s turned around a defense which was catastrophically bad in 2021 into arguably the strength of the team this season. Even with the major offensive struggles, Rudzinski’s defense means that this team has still been competitive.

Chico Bennett Jr.

Bennett entered this season with 30 career tackles and 0.5 career sacks. On Friday he took Garrett Shrader down twice and totaled four tackles, bringing his season total to four sacks and 17 tackles. The starting BANDIT for the ‘Hoos has been disruptive in the pass rush and a critical component of the recent success of the defensive line.

Syracuse football brawls to the very end, beating Virginia 22-20 (thenewshouse.com; Vazquez)

What looked like it was going to be a dominating win for Syracuse against Virginia turned into a backyard brawl Friday night in the JMA Wireless Dome. From the start, the Orange came out with a forceful effort and ultimately beat the Cavaliers 22-20.
On the opening kickoff, Syracuse wide receiver Trebor Pena had an incredible 57 yard return. The Orange were able to capitalize off the strong kick return with a 17 yard Garrett Shrader touchdown run.

Despite the slow start from Syracuse running back Sean Tucker in the first half, which included a fumble, he did pass Heisman winner Ernie Davis for 12th all time on the Syracuse rushing list. For the day, Tucker finished with 60 yards rushing on 21 carries. For the Orange to make a bowl game this year, they likely will need to get more production out of Tucker, who is more than capable of doing so.
Going into halftime, Syracuse led the Cavaliers 16-0.

The second half was when the Cavaliers put up a fight against the Orange. This started at the beginning of the third quarter when the Cavaliers orchestrated a 75 yard touchdown drive capped off by a Keytaon Thompson rushing touchdown.
Less than 30 seconds later, Virginia scored again to cut the Orange lead to just three. A catalyst for the quick turnaround was due to a Pena fumble returning a kickoff. The fumble was created by Cavaliers’ Jonathan Horton, who delivered a vicious hit to Pena.

Fans were clamoring for it to be called targeting, especially after Syracuse defensive back Justin Barron was ejected earlier from the game for targeting. That gave Virginia the ball at the Syracuse 13 yard line, leading to an eventual Perris Jones rushing touchdown.

Defense, special teams give Syracuse football reason to smile - The Juice Online (the juice; Blehar)

Syracuse football found themselves 4-0 for the first time since 2018 after their 22-20 victory over Virginia, mostly behind a strong effort from defense and special teams.

“What a game,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said. “Another nail biter at the end. We’re really fortunate to come out with a win, we’re excited about that. The play wasn’t perfect that’s for sure, but the record is.”

Babers was likely referring to his imperfect offense.

Syracuse started strong, scoring on their very first drive of the game on a 17-yard Garrett Shrader scramble on third and 15. That turned out to be SU’s only touchdown of the night as the Orange squandered multiple opportunities inside the red zone.

“We came out strong today,” Shrader said. “We have to get in the endzone, that’s the biggest thing going forward.”

But SU didn’t, and scored only six points after halftime. That allowed Virginia to rally from a 16-0 halftime deficit to take a 20-19 lead with 5:51 left.

While Syracuse couldn’t score touchdowns, kicker Andre Szmyt was able to cap off three separate drives with made field goals of 26, 32, and 28, yards.

“I got to shout out my guys,” Szmyt said. “The whole O-line, I couldn’t do it without those guys.”

Szmyt would finish a perfect 5 for 5 on field goal attempts, kicking the go-ahead score from 31 yards out to go up 22-20 with just 1:14 left in the game. It was reminiscent of Szmyt’s freshman year, when he won the Lou Groza Award for college football’s best kicker.

“How cool was that?” Babers said. “He went back to his old way and lo’ and behold, we got old Andre back.”

Syracuse also got a sterling performance from its defense. Aside from pitching a shutout in the first half, the Orange held the Virginia offense to 287 total yards. SU also forced two turnovers, highlighted by a Garrett Williams interception in the fourth quarter after the offense had just turned it over.
...

The next day: Mistakes against Virginia nearly threaten Syracuse's perfect record (DO; Alandt)

Only an illegal substitution penalty stopped Tony Elliott from going for the two-point conversion and attempting to cut Syracuse’s lead to eight points. Instead, he frustratedly opted for the extra point. It halted, at least for a moment, the steady momentum Virginia had built throughout the third quarter.

SU returner Trebor Pena, who kicked off Friday night’s game with a dynamic 57-yard return, caught Brendan Farrell’s kickoff two yards deep in the endzone. He may have, and head coach Dino Babers certainly thought so, extended his arms to signal a fair catch. Instead, he took the kickoff out as the Virginia special teams unit came barreling toward him. Kevon Darton tried to slide over from the left side and tripped up his man.

But Darton fell in the process and forced Pena to leap over him around the 15-yard line. By the time he landed, UVA tight end Henry Duke launched into Pena. The returner lost the ball in the process, and Virginia recovered at SU’s 14-yard line. Two plays later, the Cavaliers scored their second touchdown in 20 seconds.

The Orange are 4-0 after their 22-20 win over Virginia. All is well, on paper, for Babers as he’s off to his second 4-0 start in his seven-year tenure at SU. But mistakes, hints of which surfaced in last week’s win over Purdue, haunted the Orange against Virginia. They came at crucial times and nearly sunk Syracuse. If the Orange want to continue this perfect start, those mistakes cannot continue.

“If you look at the stats, not a lot of teams can do that, have that many turnovers, not convert like that and win a football game,” Garrett Shrader said.

Syracuse lost three fumbles and Shrader threw an interception after a forced pass. Babers said he was concerned about the four turnovers “a lot,” but noted that averaged out, the Orange have only turned the ball over once per game, something he’s somewhat okay with moving forward.

But after Wagner and a bye week is a four-game stretch that includes three ranked opponents and a struggling Notre Dame team that has easily handled the Orange in years past. Those mistakes can quickly pile up and cascade into consecutive losses. Syracuse has been fortunate in the last two games that mistakes, specifically from the offense, haven’t tampered with its road to perfection. That’s what happened last year in a season Babers calls an “outlier.”

By The Numbers: How Syracuse Outlasted Virginia, 22-20 – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

Sound the alarm: Syracuse football is 4-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 1991. SU took down Virginia 22-20 on Friday in a war of attrition inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Let’s take a look inside how the Orange pulled it off.

16

Without a career day from its redshirt-senior kicker, Syracuse could’ve easily sunk against UVA thanks to a subpar offensive performance. Instead, Andre Szmyt’s 16 points (5-5 on field goals, 1-1 on PATs) did most of the legwork for the Orange O. SU’s all-time points leader hit from 26, 32, 28, 40, and 31 as ‘Cuse consistently stalled deep in Virginia territory. That last 31-yarder sailed through with 1:14 left in the game and proved to be the game-winner.

Dino Babers had some things to say about the “old Andre” being back, and that’s a good thing for SU. Last year, Szmyt’s 9-14 mark on field goals was his career worst. This year, he’s 9-10, including Friday’s record-tying game – the five field goals in one game tied a program record set just one other occasion. Don McAuley booted five back in 1983 against Kent State.

102

Syracuse pulled off a win Friday despite a second-straight vanishing act from its best player. After an 18 carry, 42-yard performance against Purdue, Sean Tucker mustered only 60 yards on 21 carries against the ‘Hoos. His 102 combined yards the past two weeks are the fewest over a two-week span since consecutive slow days against Clemson and Boston College in November 2020. It’s a stark change for Tucker, whose role as the focal point of SU’s offense in 2021 saw him set a program record with nine 100-yard games. To add insult to injury, Tucker also lost his first career fumble against UVA in the first quarter.

It’s a mystery as to why Tucker can’t get it going as of late, but a strong Virginia front might’ve been the culprit Friday. The Cavs sacked Garrett Shrader six times and suffocated his running lanes, so perhaps Tucker has run up against two straight talented Power Five teams determined to stop him. The good news is that a get-right game awaits next week in Wagner College.

2.0

Speaking of Shrader, he suffered alongside Tucker as SU’s ground game labored mightily against Virginia. Cavaliers defensive coordinator John Rudzinski, the former architect of some very good Air Force defenses, seemed dead-set on forcing SU to beat them through the air. That eventually happened, but Rudzinski’s bunch pulled off its gameplan – Syracuse’s 2.0 yards per carry (38 carries for 75 yards) marked its lowest output in that category since last year’s season finale against Pitt.
...

Syracuse Football: Giant foes coming – Sean Tucker, OL have to get going (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football is 4-0 for the first time since 2018, when it went 10-3 overall, and yet All-American running back Sean Tucker isn’t off to the start that perhaps some Orange fans thought he would be.

It’s not like Tucker has proven poor with his performances to date in the 2022 campaign, and part of the dilemma here is that we have such high expectations for him after he broke the team’s single-season rushing record last year by netting nearly 1,500 yards on the ground.

But still, after watching the Orange’s 22-20 victory against Virginia (2-2) on Friday night from the JMA Wireless Dome, I did feel a bit of concern about what Sean Tucker has done over the past two games (albeit wins for the ‘Cuse). I’m also hoping that the offensive line will punch things up a bit.

Syracuse football running back Sean Tucker probably wasn’t super pleased with his output versus Virginia.

The Cavaliers’ defense is pretty solid, while the ‘Cuse defense was terrific, so I don’t want to overreact here. But in besting UVA by two points, the Orange offense accumulated 277 passing yards, which is good, but only 75 total yards on the ground, while generating just 2.0 yards per carry, according to ESPN statistics.

Tucker, against the Cavaliers, carried 21 times for 60 yards, with a long run of nine yards and a mere 2.9 yards per carry. He did haul in five catches for 45 yards, including a crucial reception late in the fourth quarter that helped Syracuse football ultimately kick a game-winning field goal with slightly more than a minute left in this Atlantic Coast Conference contest.

Inside College Football: Syracuse Takes Down Virginia 22-20 (cbssports.com; video; Inside College Football)

Our "Inside College Football" analysts recap the Syracuse Orange's 22-20 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers.

Bowl projections: Clemson jumps into College Football Playoff as Kansas State upsets Oklahoma (cbssports.com; Palm)

While the Sooners' loss to the Wildcats for the third time in four seasons does not put them out of the running for the Big 12 championship, the Tigers are now far more likely to end their regular season as an undefeated conference champion out of the ACC. Clemson beat Wake Forest 51-45 Saturday afternoon and looks to only have one ranked opponent remaining on its schedule, which it gets at home (NC State next week).

Michigan beat Maryland 34-27 this week and was the first team out of the last projection; however, it still has top-15 programs Penn State at home and Ohio State on the road over the second half of the season.

The other top-four teams held serve Saturday. Georgia was not as impressive as usual despite a 39-22 win over Kent State, Ohio State blasted Wisconsin 52-21, and Alabama routed Vanderbilt 55-3.

The swap of Clemson for Oklahoma has impacted the New Year's Six bowls. The Sooners are still projected to win the Big 12 and will now play in the Sugar Bowl against Tennessee. Baylor had previously been in the Big 12 spot in that game, but it now falls out of the New Year's Six.

Clemson had been targeted for the ACC spot in the Orange Bowl, but that is now projected to be NC State. If this comes to fruition, it would be the first appearance by the Wolfpack in a New Year's Six game. Penn State is still projected to take the other spot in that game as the highest-ranked team remaining from among the Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame.

The Cotton Bowl has a change as well. Appalachian State suffered its second loss of the season at home to FBS newcomer James Madison. The Dukes are one of only two Group of Five teams that are still undefeated four weeks into the season, but they are ineligible for the postseason because they are still transitioning to FBS. The other undefeated team is Coastal Carolina, which is now projected into the Group of Five spot in the Cotton Bowl to face Oregon. The Ducks replaced USC after winning at Washington State despite the Trojans surviving Oregon State on Saturday night.

Memphis in 2019 is the only team to qualify for the Group of Five spot in the New Year's Six without being undefeated since 2015. Only the Rose Bowl projection is unchanged this week. That is still expected to be Michigan against Utah.

Axe: Defending SU fans that stay home; will ESPN’s College GameDay skip Syracuse again? (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on the Syracuse fans still staying home and if we missed out on a visit from ESPN’s College GameDay as soon as I congratulate the Miami Dolphins for beating the Buffalo Bills practice squad.

Home is Where the Fans Are

The Syracuse student section Syracuse Orange Football 2022: Syracuse vs Virginia. The Orange takes on the Virginia Cavaliers at the JMA Wireless Dome, Sept 23, 2022. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

I spent a good part of my Saturday on Twitter (I really need to get out more) defending Syracuse fans who haven’t made their way back to the JMA Wireless Dome to take in an SU football game.

Friday night’s crowd at the Dome for SU’s 22-20 win over Virginia was a mere 34,590.

Orange diehards are aghast that those missing to fill in the empty seats haven’t returned in droves with Syracuse off to a 4-0 start (and about to be 5-0 with a presumed win over Wagner coming).

I would implore them to have patience.

It’s going to take more than a few wins to get the casual fans back in the building.

While passionate fans make good points about empty seats hurting recruiting, the affordability of the product and the turnaround of the team, they also have short memories.

The casual fans (a fairweather 10,000 or so) that aren’t alums and don’t live and die by what the Orange do game-by-game have been drawn in before only to be burned by a lot of bad football around here the last 20 years or so.

Talking them out of leaving the creature comforts of home for the Dome is harder these days.

Social media also makes it easier to keep up with the game while shuttling kids to their own games and events or whatever may be keeping them away from the Dome.

I think the season tickets holders get anxiety when they see a good Syracuse team and not enough butts in seats besides them to watch it because they know how quickly that can change.

God bless those Orange fans the make a day of it every time SU straps on the pads in the Dome. The fans that have shown up this season have been electric despite the low numbers.

Years of debating this topic on radio and in this column for years have developed the same pattern: Get the right fans in the building and the rest will follow.

DeVito throws for 329 yards to help Illinois to its best start since 2015 (PS; AP)

Chase Brown became the first Illinois running back to rush for 100-plus yards in five straight games, Tommy DeVito passed for 329 yards and three touchdowns and the Fighting Illini blanked Chattanooga 31-0 on Thursday night.

Illinois improved to 3-1 and is off to its best start since 2015.

DeVito, the former Syracuse University quarterback, threw for 300 yards for the third time in his career. His passing total was 1 yard shy of a career-high 330 yards at Maryland in 2019, when he was with the Orange.

“I think we’re just beginning to understand who we are,” Illinois coach Bret Bielema said. “I really like the way this group works.”

Brown capped a five-play, 64-yard scoring drive with a 9-yard touchdown run after the defense forced Chattanooga (3-1) into a three-and-out on its first drive.

He finished with 108 rushing yards on 20 carries and currently leads all FBS rushers with 604 yards through four games.

The closest the Mocs came to scoring came early in the second quarter when they drove to the Illinois 16-yard line. Jartavius Martin picked off a Preston Hutchinson pass in the end zone to end the Mocs’ threat and preserve a 10-0 lead.

The former team coached by Robert Anae came to play his current team in the JMA Wireless Dome. From the start, it was pretty clear that the Cavaliers defensive game plan was focused on stopping star RB Sean Tucker (he was held to just 60 yards on 21 carries). However, one thing Virginia was unable to stop was Garrett Shrader's passing (22/33 for 277 yards and 1 interception). Meanwhile, the Orange were able to limit Brennan Armstrong to just 138 yards passing on 38 attempts, also with 1 int.

Virginia Cavaliers lose their ACC road opener to Syracuse to drop to 2-2 on the season. The Ball Hawk breakdowns what took place during the recent loss.

An ‘existential question’ looms large after 4-0 start: Is SU football good? (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football is 4-0 following a 22-20 victory against Virginia on Friday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Wagner, an FCS opponent that has lost 23 games in a row, is next.

Then SU gets a week off.

It stands to reason the Orange will remain unbeaten through the middle of October, when it hosts North Carolina State on Oct. 15.

There’s a bunch of areas the Orange needs to clean up before then.

And its roster could use the break after back-to-back, 60-minute fights with Power-Five competition.

Here’s what social media is saying after SU moved to 4-0 on the season:

ACC Power Rankings: SU isn’t only winning team with flaws, but tougher tests await (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse is going to enjoy an extended stay taking up residence in the neighborhood of college football’s unbeaten.

Its spot is secure for three weeks.

Yes, there’s a game Saturday evening against Wagner, but the Seahawks have lost 23 in a row dating back to the 2019 season.

After that, SU gets two weeks to prepare for its Oct. 15 home game against North Carolina State.

That kicks off a brutal back-half of the schedule in which Syracuse faces all five teams ahead of it in this week’s Power Rankings — plus Notre Dame.

Settle in, and let’s begin to unpack it.

1. Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC)
Last game: W 51-45 (2OT) at Wake Forest

Next game: vs. North Carolina State; 7:30 p.m.; ABC

They don’t hand out most improved player awards in football, but Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei would be an early candidate.

He threw for a season-high 371 yards and career-high five touchdowns, including the game-winner in the second overtime period to tight end Davis Allen, to get by Wake Forest and extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 10 games.

It sets up a top-10 showdown against North Carolina State in primetime on Saturday night.

2. North Carolina State (4-0)
Last game: W 41-10 vs. Connecticut

Next game: at Clemson; 7:30 p.m.; ABC

N.C. State broke into the Top 10 of the AP poll for the first time since 2002, when Philip Rivers was slinging it to Jerricho Cotchery.

Officially, that was State’s last double-digit win season (though Dave Doeren has taken credit for it last year after UCLA backed out of the bowl game on late notice).

The Wolfpack as self-corrected after an early season scare at East Carolina.

It can now earn its spot as a College Football Playoff contender with a win at Clemson.
...

...
6. Syracuse (4-0, 2-0 ACC)↓1
Last game: W 22-20 vs. Virginia

Next game: vs. Wagner; 5 p.m.; ACC Network Extra/ESPN+

The Power Rankings are staunch supporters of the nebulous eye test.

So here we go: Syracuse will be off to its best start to a season in 35 years, but it’s been a hand-timed and wind-aided result that will be viewed differently in some circles.

A few unforced blunders in key spots by the opposition factor into the unblemished record as much as the late-game heroics from Garrett Shrader the previous two times out.

Breaking: ACC Football Coach Fired On Sunday Night - The Spun: What's Trending In The Sports World Today (thespun.comn; Holleran)

An ACC football coach has been fired.

According to reports out of Atlanta, Georgia Tech has parted ways with head coach Geoff Collins.

Collins had been the program's head coach since the 2019 season. He's failed to build a winner in the ACC.

Now, he's reportedly out.

Ken Suguira first reported the news on Sunday evening.

Georgia Tech reportedly called an official board meeting for Monday to discuss Collins' status.

However, a decision appears to have been made.

Georgia Tech will begin its search for a next head coach shortly.

Podcast: FSU is ranked and 4-0 — now the hard part starts (tomahwaknation.com; podcast; Bellerin, Scarpio and Marchant)

Florida State Seminoles football is off to its best start in seven years, having just blown out the Boston College Eagles in front of a sold-out crowd to start 4-0 (2-0 ACC) for the first time since 2015.

FSU also has a number next to its name for the first time since the 2018 season opener, earning a No. 23/22 ranking (AP/Coaches Poll) heading into this week’s matchup vs. No. 22/21 Wake Forest.

It’s the first of three straight games against top 25 opponents, with No. 10 NC State and No. 5 Clemson the next two matchups on the schedule.

It’ll be a true indicator of where the Seminoles are in head coach Mike Norvell’s third season — have they taken a step to be pretty good, or have they exceeded expectations there?

On this week’s Seminole Wrap, the trio breaks down what has made Florida State so good so far in 2022, what the next few weeks of the season could look like, and more.

ACC Football Power Rankings: Atlantic showdown looming with NC State-Clemson (augustafreepress; Graham)

It was a weekend full of drama in the ACC Coastal as five teams suffered losses, while Clemson and NC State took care of business, setting up a Top 10 matchup next week.

Clemson needed double overtime to defeat Wake Forest, 51-45, while the Wolfpack devoured hapless UConn, 41-10.

Over in the Coastal Division, none of the five losses were more embarrassing than Middle Tennessee ending the “Miami is back” jargon with a stunning 45-31 win over Miami.

Georgia Tech is about to pull the plug on head coach Geoff Collins after a 1-3 start. Collins has been 10-28 in parts of four seasons, with the program showing no improvement during the Collins tenure.

Virginia and Virginia Tech continued to self-destruct in losses to Syracuse and West Virginia. In Chapel Hill, UNC was soundly defeated by a pedestrian Notre Dame, 45-32. The Tar Heels defense gave up 24 points in the second quarter and never recovered.

All told, it was not a good day at the office Saturday for Coastal Division teams.

ACC Atlantic

  1. Clemson (4-0,2-0 ACC) The Tigers remain on top, just barely, after the 51-45 double overtime win over Wake Forest. Clemson will put its nation’s best home winning streak on the line next against NC State. The game will be the centerpiece of college football as ESPN’s “GameDay” comes to town.
  2. NC State (4-0, 0-0 ACC) The Wolfpack had no trouble in crushing UConn 41-10, in a game that was not that close. It was hard to evaluate just how much NC State has improved since its opening game scare at ECU, because Connecticut is just awful.
  3. FSU (4-0,2-0 ACC) Again, it is difficult to judge how much the Seminoles have improved with its 44-14 drubbing over another bad team, Boston College, Saturday. Next up for FSU is a home contest with Wake.
  4. Wake Forest (3-1,0-1 ACC) Sometimes to take a step forward, you take a step backward. The Deacons had No. 5 Clemson on the ropes several times but failed to close the deal in their double overtime loss to Clemson. Wake is still very much a contender in the Atlantic; they will need some help, though.
  5. Syracuse (4-0, 2-0 ACC) OK, the Orange are undefeated, but they were far from impressive during a 22-20 win over Virginia, who continue appear determined to put a round peg into a square hole. Syracuse needed every one of kicker Andre Szmyt’s five field goals to win, including the game-winner.
  6. Louisville (2-2, 0-2 ACC) The theme continues, Louisville picks up a 41-3 win over hapless South Florida
  7. Boston College (1-3, 0-2 ACC) The Eagles fall to 0-2 in the ACC with the 44-14 grounding by FSU. BC did not cross midfield until the third quarter.

ACC football power rankings: Coastal chaos ensues as Clemson vs NC State looms (fayobserver.com; Thompson)

It was a weekend of Coastal chaos as five teams from the ACC's coastal division suffered losses while Clemson and NC State took home wins to set up a top 10 matchup between the two football programs next week.

Here are the USA TODAY Network's ACC power rankings:

1. Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC)

The Tigers remain on top, just barely, after a 51-45 double overtime win over Wake Forest. Clemson will put its nation’s best home winning streak on the line against NC State.

Last week: No. 1

2. NC State (4-0, 0-0)

The Wolfpack had no trouble dispatching UConn during a 41-10 win Saturday night at home. NC State will face the Tigers next week with ESPN's College GameDay in tow.

Last week: No. 2

3. Florida State (4-0, 2-0)

Florida State took care of Boston College and remained undefeated on the season.

Last week: No. 3

4. Pitt (3-1, 0-0)

After a wacky week in the Coastal division, Pitt looks like the favorite to win it for the second straight year. The Panthers defeated Rhode Island 45-24.

Last week: No. 5

5. Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1)

Sometimes you fail upwards. The Demon Deacons had No. 5 Clemson on the ropes at home but couldn’t close the deal during a 51-45 double overtime loss. Wake Forest, though, is still a contender to win the Atlantic Division, it’ll just need some help.

Last week: No. 6

6. Miami (2-2, 0-0)

Miami lost its second straight game to tumble down the ACC power rankings. The Hurricanes took a justifiable 17-9 loss to Texas A&M last week, but Saturday’s 45-31 loss at home to Middle Tennessee State was a headscratcher.

Last week: No. 3

7. Syracuse (4-0, 2-0)

Yes, the Orange are undefeated, but they looked less-than-impressive during a 22-20 win against a bad Virginia team. Andre Szmyt knocked in five field goals, including the 31-yard game-winner with just over a minute left, and Syracuse held off Virginia's second-half comeback to beat the Cavaliers 22-20.

Last week: No. 8

FSU football: ACC Power Rankings after week four (chopchat; Hunt)

I had FSU football in the top half of my preseason ACC Power Rankings, and I look like I was on the right track overall.

The Noles look like they could be one of the most complete teams in the conference. We saw them dominate Boston College, who I had ranked last in my power rankings last week.

Miami embarrased themselves with Middle Tennessee State dominating them for 60 minutes in a home loss. We saw Wake Forest take Clemson to double overtime, but week five is where the pretenders will be separated from the contenders. Clemson travels to NC State and Wake Forest travels to FSU football.

Anyways, here are my updated rankings after four weeks by division and then overall as a conference:

ACC Atlantic

  • Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC)
  • FSU (4-0, 2-0 ACC)
  • Syracuse (4-0, 2-0 ACC)
  • NC State (4-0, 0-0 ACC)
  • Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC)
  • Louisville (2-2, 0-2 ACC)
  • Boston College (1-3, 1-2 ACC)
ACC Coastal

  • Pittsburgh (3-1, 0-0 ACC)
  • Duke (3-1, 0-0 ACC)
  • North Carolina (3-1, 0-0 ACC)
  • Miami (2-2, 0-0 ACC)
  • Virginia (2-2, 0-1 ACC)
  • Virginia Tech (2-2, 1-1 ACC)
  • Georgia Tech (1-3, 0-1 ACC)

Overall Power Rankings

  1. Clemson
  2. FSU
  3. Syracuse
  4. Pittsburgh
  5. NC State
  6. Wake Forest
  7. Louisville
  8. Duke
  9. North Carolina
  10. Miami
  11. Virginia
  12. Virginia Tech
  13. Georgia Tech
  14. Boston College

Parting Thoughts

FSU will have a shot to secure themselves at the top of the conference over the next three weeks as they take on Wake Forest, NC State, and Clemson. I’ve seen enough to know Syracuse is a fraud program, but I couldn’t drop them since they beat Virginia and those ranked below them played non-Power Five programs and won.

I think Wake Forest would beat them, but I can’t have them leapfrog everyone when they lost, even thought it was a double overtime loss against Clemson. Louisville moves up after throttling South Florida and Miami sinks after their embarrassing loss. The bottom half of the ACC is real bad.

Georgia Tech got shut out, AGAIN, and at this point it's clear how the Geoff Collins experiment is going to end up.

Florida State scored a huge comeback win on Friday night over Louisville (though it came with a potentially significant cost), and Scott Satterfield's tenure with the Cardinals may be wearing thin.

Syracuse got the win over Purdue in an absolutely bizarre game, and we introduce a new advanced metric.

Does NC State look ready for Clemson in 2 weeks following their win over Texas Tech?

The musical you’ll talk about for the rest of your life: Syracuse Stage world-premieres ‘How to Dance in Ohio’ (review) (PS; $; Lowen)

Imagine you’re at the opening night of “Rent,” a rock musical by little-known writer/composer Jonathan Larson in January 1996. Imagine you’re dazzled by Idina Menzel in “Wicked,” not anticipating she’d fly high “Defying Gravity” back in 2003. That’s the joy of discovery: being the first to see “Sensational!” “Spectacular!” Stunning!” play out onstage while knowing very little going in. Reviewers and critics use/abuse those three words all too often; but when you see the musical you’ll talk about for the rest of your life, you don’t need to be told what to think.

You’ll feel it.

You’ll walk out of the theater wiping your eyes. You’ll pause in the lobby to catch your breath, clear your head, and see if anyone else is as giddy as you are. If you’re Danielle and Aaron (a Manlius couple parenting a houseful of teens), you’ll declare, “We’re coming back with the kids.” And if you’re Nicole (a local caseworker who understands the reality behind the story), you’ll stop in the plaza outside the theatre to fortuitously tell a nearby stranger, “Everyone in Central New York should see this show.”
