Four-Prunes-Day.jpg
Welcome to Four Prunes Day!

for gbo
Four Prunes Day is a day to eat prunes, and is named as such because it is believed that someone looking for digestive regularity will get it by eating between four and nine prunes in a sitting. Prunes, which are dried plums, have gotten a bad rap over the years because of their association with constipation relief. Because of this, plum growers worked to change the stigma, and were allowed to rebrand them by labeling them as "dried plums" starting in 2001. Most prunes are grown in California—about 200,000 a year—most of which are a variety similar to a kind grown in Agen, France. These types of prunes came from France to the United States in 1856. Prunes were eaten by the Greeks and Romans, and were planted all around the Mediterranean Sea after coming from China. Prunes are a good source of fiber and a rich source of Vitamin K. They also are a good source of potassium and magnesium, and contain antioxidants. Only about three quarters of a pound of prunes are eaten each year per capita in the United States. Maybe Four Prunes Day needs to be celebrated a little more often!

SU among 9 unbeatens. Let it sink in while drafting Babers’ new contract (what they’re saying) (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football is 6-0 following a 24-9 victory against North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon in the JMA Wireless Dome.

In a statement win that will reverberate nationally, the Orange remained one of nine unbeaten teams in college football.

Syracuse will likely climb into the Top 15 this afternoon in the national polls, setting up another massive showdown next week at Clemson, a team carrying the nation’s longest winning streak (13 games) and the longest home win streak in ACC history (37).

It’s the deepest into a season an unbeaten Syracuse team has faced another unbeaten team since Nov. 7, 1959 at 7-0 Penn State. Syracuse won, 20-18 en route to the national championship.

Here’s what social media is saying after the Orange moved to 6-0 on the season and clinched a bowl game:

Congrats #SyracuseFootball on going 6-0! Feels good! #cuse #syracuse #orange #syracuseuniversity #goorange

The next day: Syracuse beats NC State in 'defensive battle' to earn bowl eligibility (DO; Vasudevan)

Mikel Jones was on Marshall Street last Friday when fans told him they would storm the field if Syracuse defeated NC State. At first, he didn’t believe it. But when it actually happened the next day, Jones said it didn’t feel real.

Fans last rushed in 2017, when SU upset then-No. 2 Clemson 27-24. After NC State quarterback Jack Chambers heaved the ball near the goal line on the last play of the game and Derek McDonald batted the ball to the turf, the first sold-out crowd of the year spilled onto the Dome turf.

The Orange’s 6-0 start has been highlighted by Oronde Gadsden II’s game-winning catch versus Purdue, Garrett Shrader’s career-high 287 passing yards against UConn and Andre Szmyt’s 5-for-5 performance versus Virginia. But key defensive plays like Mcdonald’s have also been sprinkled into the best start since 1987 — Caleb Okechukwu’s pick-six against the Boilermakers, Steve Linton’s strip sack on Louisville’s Malik Cunningham and Eric Coley’s bat-down to halt UVA’s last drive.

Saturday’s contest was a “defensive battle,” head coach Dino Babers said. NC State is the next closest to Syracuse in the conference’s rankings, giving up an average of 13.2 points per game. Babers compared the matchup to a scene in “Creed 2”, when the two boxers keep one foot each in the middle of a tire, sending body blow after body blow at one another.

“You saw two of the top three defenses going,” Babers said. “Sometimes you have to throw some body punches in there.”

Tony White’s 3-3-5 defense is the best in the ACC and the sixth-best defense in the country, allowing just 10 touchdowns this season. The run defense is also the 11th-best nationally, allowing 95.0 yards per game.

NC State’s offense entered the game after losing quarterback Devin Leary for the season and running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye for the weekend. Sumo-Karngbaye was the Wolfpack’s leading rusher, splitting carries with Jordan Houston. Houston started Saturday’s contest, running straight down the middle on NC State’s first play. Houston picked up four yards, but before the whistle sounded, Jones pulled Houston right back to where he started the play five yards behind the line of scrimmage.

The Wolfpack started Charleston Southern graduate transfer Jack Chambers, who provided another rushing threat against SU’s defense. Early in the matchup, Chambers’ agility on the ground showed.

Gadsden notched a career-high eight receptions and 137 yards in the win over the Wolfpack.

Oronde Gadsden II’s consistency shows again in career-high night against NC State (DO; Vasudevan)

Oronde Gadsden II dropped the ball. When Garrett Shrader lofted the ball near the right sideline in the first quarter, Gadsden was forced to make a quick hop to get inside leverage on his defender. But the ball bounced off his pads.

Head coach Dino Babers said that most people would’ve looked at that as a bad sign, seeing the drop as a “jinx” for the rest of the night. Babers thought the opposite. He knew Gadsden was not going to drop a ball for the rest of the game.

So, on the next play, Gadsden ran the same route on the opposite side. The ball came toward his backside, and Gadsden turned before taking another little hop, this time hauling it in. He didn’t drop the ball for the rest of the game.

“Every once in a while there’s a happening. That drop was a happening,” Babers said. “That’s not what he is. He’s consistently good, not occasionally great.”

Gadsden finished No. 18 Syracuse’s (6-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast) 24-9 win over No. 15 NC State (5-2, 1-2 ACC) finishing with a career-high eight receptions for 141 yards. Despite the Wolfpack entering the game with the third-best passing defense in the conference, Gadsden exploited his one-on-one matchups with NC State’s undersized defensive backs with two touchdown grabs.

Gadsden’s second breakout season has provided Syracuse with a primary receiving target for the first time since 2020, when Taj Harris finished the year with 733 receiving yards. Gadsden is on pace to break that mark, now averaging 84.5 receiving yards per game after Saturday’s win.

Last year, Gadsden played mostly on special teams and only garnered two receptions for 24 yards. Then Robert Anae entered as SU’s offensive coordinator. The offense became more pass-heavy, and Gadsden moved to a hybrid of slot receiver and tight end. He was asked to block more and make catches in the middle of the field.

But to get to that point of being Syracuse’s primary receiver, Gadsden had to win Shrader’s trust first. The duo spent the majority of Syracuse’s spring practices and fall camp “putting the work in” to know each other’s tendencies.

Observations from SU’s win over No. 15 NC State: Oronde overhaul, banged-up Wolfpack (DO; Vasudevan)

No. 18 Syracuse entered its matchup on Saturday with two weeks rest while No. 15 NC State faced Florida State last week. The Wolfpack escaped with a 19-17 win, but they lost quarterback Devin Leary for the season and running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye for this weekend.

Syracuse dismantled the Wolfpack’s offense, holding them to 72 total yards in the first half. Meanwhile, Oronde Gadsden II set a new career-high with 141 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Syracuse secured its first 6-0 start since 1987, securing bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018.

Here are some observations from No. 18 Syracuse’s 24-9 win over No. 15 NC State:

Lack of Leary

Leary walked onto the field before the game in a beanie and hoodie, wearing his No. 13 jersey while graduate transfer Jack Chambers warmed up. Six hours before the game, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that NC State quarterback Devin Leary wouldn’t play due to a shoulder injury from last week’s contest against Florida State. Two hours before kickoff, NC State announced Leary would miss the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Head coach Dino Babers said the Orange prepared for Leary and Chambers. Chambers provided more of a rushing threat, something that torched the Orange early on. On a 1st-and-10, Syracuse sent Marlowe Wax barrelling at Chambers from the right side. Chambers avoided the pressure, spinning away from Wax and running down the right sideline for a first down.

Chambers dropped back a few plays later, faking a dump off pass to Thayer Thomas before coming back to running back Jordan Houston on a designed screen. Derek McDonald, who returned on Saturday from an injury, charged at Chambers from the left side, but Chambers let go of the ball just in time. Houston picked up 18 yards, but the Wolfpack elected for a field goal after failing to get into the end zone on 3rd-and-goal.

Syracuse’s defense continued to bend, but those instances slowly decreased toward the end of the first half. NC State even took out Chambers for one drive, thinking that third-string quarterback M.J. Morris could get its offense over the hump. But he couldn’t do much either.

The Orange Are Going Bowling! Syracuse Takes Down NC State 24-9 – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

One year later, Syracuse has done it! The #18 Orange have reached the six win threshold and will be playing football in December. SU led from start to finish and hit the accelerator in the second half to beat #15 NC State 24-9 in the JMA Wireless Dome.

It certainly wasn’t a pretty win but the SU defense came to play and shut down NC State every time it reached the red zone. The Orange forced a trio of Wolfpack field goals while converting on their own chances in the red zone.

Syracuse was 5-4 and one game why of a bowl berth one year ago but ended the season with three consecutive losses. Now the pressure is off Dino Babers’ shoulders because SU just nabbed that sixth win and may not be done.

#4 Clemson is on the clock…

1st Quarter

  • SU Drive 1: Syracuse works methodically down the field: quick strikes, long Sean Tucker run, free play jump ball TD to Oronde Gadsden | 7-0 Syracuse | 5 plays, 65 yards, TD
  • NC State Drive 1: Three-and-out | 3 plays, 2 yards, punt | 7-0 Syracuse
  • SU Drive 2: Three-and-out | 3 plays, -6 yards, punt | 7-0 Syracuse
  • NC State Drive 2: 12 plays, 48 yards, FG | 7-3 Syracuse
2nd Quarter
  • SU Drive 3: SU drive stalls in red zone after 3rd and 5 | 9 plays, 71 yards, FG | 10-3 Syracuse
  • NC State Drive 3: Three-and-out | 3 plays, 3 yards, punt | 10-3 Syracuse

  • SU Drive 6: Double move jump ball intended for Courtney Jackson picked off | 2 plays, 36 yards, INT | 10-3 Syracuse

While it came with 2:20 left on the clock, Sean Tucker turning the corner and sprinting for a 25-yard touchdown run effectively iced a victory for #18 Syracuse. The score made it a two-touchdown game and the Orange (6-0, 3-0) held on from there for a 24-9 victory over #15 North Carolina State in front of a sellout crowd at the JMA Wireless Dome.

SU put together a handful of big plays, creating enough of a difference between themselves and the Wolfpack (5-2, 1-2) to claim victory in a mostly defensive-minded contest. The Syracuse defense held N.C. State to 255 total yards and, more impressively, 3.7 yards per play. The Orange nearly doubled the guests in that last statistical measure, posting 7.1 yards per play, thanks to 15 offensive plays that gained at least ten yards. The SU defense permitted just seven such plays, three coming on North Carolina State’s final drive.

Syracuse made it look like a potential blowout early, needing just five plays and a touch over two minutes to take a 7-0 lead on the first of two Garrett Shrader-to-Oronde Gadsden II touchdown connections. The 12-yard scoring pass and Andrew Szmyt extra point got the Orange crowd rocking.

Axe: What SU needs to do now that Babers’ job is safe for another year (PS; $; Axe)

The job that Dino Babers has done so far in year seven as head coach of the Syracuse University football team has erased all doubt that he’ll be back for year eight.

Before the 2022 season began, most reasonable minds agreed that if Syracuse made a bowl game, Dino comes back.

It was simple as that.

Well, Syracuse is bowl eligible two weeks before Halloween.

Expectations are rising in the wake of the program’s third 6-0 start since 1935 and with a Top 15 showdown with No. 5 Clemson looming on Saturday.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack slapped his cards on the table when, without prompting, he declared that Babers was not on the hot seat this season at a press conference back in June.

His futures bet on Babers paid off, but now it’s time for Wildhack to think bigger.

Here are a few priorities for Wildhack and Syracuse University to address while the good vibes are flowing about Babers and Syracuse football.

Syracuse football: You can enjoy your cake Orange fans (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange are 6-0 and even if they finish the regular season at 6-6, the cake is ready for you to enjoy...but you could also wait and try and enjoy something better.

The Orange will be heading to a bowl game. They will be ranked for at least two more weeks and they play next week for the Atlantic Division lead. No one could have predicted this in the spring, summer or fall. It hasn’t been pretty but you don’t get style points in football. All that matters is that Syracuse has found a way to end each game with the most points on the scoreboard.

They’ve done it despite injuries and turnovers or both as was the case against NC State yesterday. Don’t lose sight that the Syracuse defense kept the game 17-9 in a goal-line series where Garrett Williams, Duce Chestnut, Mikel Jones and Leon Lowery were out of the game. Players stepped up and kept NC State out of the end zone. Then, the offense closed the game as they opened it- with a touchdown drive.

Empty seats which stood out during September were packed as those casual fans saw 5-0 and a top-20 ranking and wanted to be part of the fun. We’ve shared the recipe the last few years- it took equal parts winning, promotion and atmosphere to make Saturday afternoons feel like Saturday night basketball games.

Syracuse football remains undefeated after 24-9 win over NC State (247sports.com; Finneral)

Syracuse football is 6-0 for the first time since 1987 after a 24-9 victory over NC State. The JMA Wireless Dome was sold out and the Orange delivered a win against a quality ACC opponent.

This game had a lot of different elements to it. It was far from a flawless performance by Syracuse, but the team rallied at the necessary moments in order to come out on top.

The defense was the true difference-maker for Syracuse in this game. NC State quarterback Devin Leary was declared out for the season so Syracuse had to face a completely different type of signal caller in Jack Chambers.

Chambers is not the passer Leary is, but he is a much bigger threat as a runner. Chambers had some success in the run-pass option, but the Syracuse defense put the heat on him and came up with crucial plays to take the Wolfpack off the field and prevent them from scoring a touchdown the entire game.

The Syracuse defense held NC State to just 87 total yards in the first half. Mikel Jones and Marlowe Wax were all over the field for the Orange. Syracuse will need more of the same from those players as the competition gets even fiercer.

College football: Wolfpack stumbles at No. 18 Syracuse with QB Leary’s season is over - Salisbury Post (AP; Kekis)

Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II with a pair of touchdown passes, Sean Tucker scored on a 25-yard run late and No. 18 Syracuse beat No. 15 North Carolina State 24-9 on Saturday to remain unbeaten.

Syracuse (6-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) started a season with six wins for just the third time since 1935, taking advantage of the absence of the Wolfpack’s injured star quarterback, Devin Leary. Hurt last week in a win over Florida State, Leary was declared out for the rest of the season before the game. The preseason conference player of the year suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will undergo surgery next week in Florida. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

The Orange took the opening kickoff and scored in short fashion, driving 65 yards in five plays in just 2:04. Tucker’s 38-yard run set up Shrader’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Gadsden, his fourth scoring catch of the season.

North Carolina State (5-2, 1-2), with Charleston Southern graduate transfer Jack Chambers making his first start at quarterback, struggled on offense. Syracuse outgained N.C. State 113-55 in the first half. Chambers got the Wolfpack rolling in the second half but they had to settle for field goals instead of getting into the end zone.
...

Football Takeaways: Worst offensive fears confirmed in loss to Syracuse )technicianonline.com; Bakogiannis)

With the crushing loss of redshirt junior quarterback Devin Leary, there were more than a few questions about the state and efficacy of the Wolfpack’s offense. How would graduate quarterback Jack Chambers perform in his first start with NC State? How often would the Pack find the endzone without Leary? Could the defense repel a rolling Syracuse offense for long enough?

And for better or for worse, those questions were answered in Saturday’s 24-9 loss to Syracuse.

On a day where the red-and-white failed to score a touchdown, it was clear there was a difference between Leary and Chambers under center. That’s not to say the transfer signal-caller didn’t give it his all. With 18 completions for 160 yards through the air and a whopping 19 run attempts for a net 58 rushing yards, Chambers did all he could to put points on the board for the Pack.

While it was clear Chambers showed heart, making more than few impressive completions, diving for first downs and taking hit after hit against the high-flying Syracuse defense, without putting touchdowns on the board, the Wolfpack didn’t stand a chance. There were only four drives where Chambers and company crossed the 50-yard line, three of which ended in field goals.

And while graduate placekicker Chris Dunn continues to be lights-out in 2022, field goals are rarely ever enough to beat an undefeated, ranked opponent like Syracuse.

Without Leary, it was clear the Wolfpack’s offensive gameplan was going to change. The ground game was the obvious plan going into the game and it showed, especially with an experienced running quarterback such as Chambers. The signal-caller and junior running back Jordan Houston got the bulk of the ground work, with Houston tallying 12 rushes for 44 yards.

However, it was tough sledding between the trenches for the Wolfpack, as Houston only averaged 3.7 yards per carry, with Chambers following close behind at 3.1. Furthermore, it’s always tough to follow through on your ground-and-pound gameplan if your opponent gets out to a lead and you can’t put up sixes on the board.

With the need to pass, especially in the second half, NC State just didn’t have the firepower to get it done. Graduate receiver Thayer Thomas, who has been the closest thing to a wide receiver one for NC State, only recorded a measly three receptions for 18 yards on the day. And even though seven different receivers caught passes, a lack of the deep ball may have been the final nail in the coffin for the struggling Wolfpack offense.

No you don't push him out. Morris has 5 games, probably 6 with a bowl game, to show what he can do. If Leary comes back, QB competition in the spring and then make a decision. Leary might even decide not to come back to NC State. Depending on the weapons he has, the offensive coordinator situation etc., it might be a smart move to go elsewhere for his final season where he would have a better chance at getting some of his draft stock back up. So many unanswered questions and possibilities moving forward.

Dear Santa……please let Diamond Dave get promoted to the Panthers, the Badgers, the Huskers, etc. See…..i didn't call for DD to be fired. We ARE NOT a well coached football team and this season is shaping up like MANY others have in the past. Too much talent to not be playing for more than a shitty bowel game. ACC Football Power Rankings: Week 8 (SI; McKenney)

Week 7 only saw eight ACC teams in action, so there are no major shake ups in this weeks rankings. Clemson continues to roll, as does Syracuse. NC State's season has taken a turn for the worst.

Keep reading to find out the full ACC hierarchy.

1. Clemson Tigers (6-0)

Last Week: 1

The No. 4 Tigers remained perfect with a 34-28 win at Florida State on Saturday. DJ Uiagalelei continues to look confident, passing for 203 yards with 3 TDs. Will Shipley rushed for 121 yards, and he added a big play on special teams with a 69-yard kick return to start the second half. The defense will need to return to their dominant form for this team to reach its full potential. But the Tigers are in the driver's seat in the ACC Atlantic. Up next is arguably Clemson’s toughest remaining test of the regular season.

Up Next: vs. Syracuse (6-0), Saturday, Noon ET, ABC

Opening Line: Clemson -13.5

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-1)

Last Week: 2

The 45-10 win over Army back on Oct. 8 is the premier example of how far this Wake Forest defense has improved since last season. First year defensive coordinator Brad Lambert has gotten his unit to take a step forward, while the offense continues to be elite. Quarterback Sam Hartman has taken full advantage of the plethora of weapons at his disposal, posting a stellar 16:2 touchdown to interception ratio. The Deacs remain at home coming off the week of res.

Up Next: vs. Boston College (2-4), Saturday, 3:30 ET, ACCN

Opening Line: Wake Forest -20.5

3. Syracuse Orange (6-0)

Last Week: 3

The Orange secured their best win of the season Saturday, defeating NC State 24-9. With Devin Leary absent, the Syracuse defense held backup QB Jack Chambers to just 160 passing yards, and kept the Wolfpack out of the endzone. Running Back Sean Tucker ran for 98 yards, sealing the game with a 25 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Syracuse has built plenty of momentum, but the upcoming trip to Death Valley will be the ultimate test.

Up Next: at Clemson (7-0) Saturday, Noon ET, ABC

Opening Line: Clemson -13.5

4. UNC Tar Heels (6-1)

Last Week: 6

Saturday’s 38-35 win in the rivalry game against Duke earned the Tar Heels a No. 22 spot in the AP Poll. North Carolina’s defense has been suspect at best this year, but this team is still finding ways to win. Down 35-31, Drake Maye led the Heels to a nine play, 74-yard drive, capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Green on third and goal with sixteen seconds remaining. The Heels now find themselves at the top of the coastal division, and will have a bye week to regroup before a big divisional matchup at home vs Pitt.

ACC Football Points of Pride

Four conference games make up week seven of the ACC schedule, which is highlighted by a top 25 matchup between No. 15 NC State and No. 18 Syracuse. All four games are division games. Six teams – Boston College, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pitt, Virginia and Wake Forest – have the weekend off.
In a matchup of top 25 ACC teams, No. 18 Syracuse welcomes No. 15 NC State to the JMA Wireless Dome Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m./ACCN). It is the first time a ranked Syracuse team has played a ranked ACC opponent since the Orange joined the league in 2013. It is the first time NC State and Syracuse have faced each other as ranked teams. NC State seeks its eighth win in 10 ACC meetings versus the Orange as unbeaten Syracuse closes out a four-game homestand.
The Syracuse-NC State is a battle of the top two statistical defenses in the ACC. Syracuse leads the league in total defense (271.6 ypg) and scoring defense (14.0 ppg), and is second in rushing defense (95.0 ypg) and passing defense (176.6 ypg). NC State is second in total defense (297.8 ypg) and second in scoring defense (15.7 ppg).
Miami and Virginia Tech meet for the 31st consecutive time in an early Saturday kickoff in Blacksburg, Virginia (12:30 p.m./RSN). Miami has won three straight and four of the last five versus the Hokies, including last season’s 38-26 victory in Miami Gardens. Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke, the reigning ACC Quarterback of the Week, passed for 357 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes last season. The teams have split the last 16 meetings in Blacksburg, with Miami winning the most recent by a 25-24 score in 2020.
In a key Coastal Division rivalry game, North Carolina makes the short trip to Durham to face Duke (8 p.m./ACCN) in a battle for the Victory Bell. North Carolina leads the ACC and is eighth in the country averaging 42.3 points per game.
No. 4 Clemson and No. 18 Syracuse are two of the 15 remaining FBS undefeated teams in the country. Clemson is 6-0 for the seventh time in the last eight years, after a 31-3 win Saturday at Boston College. The Orange is 5-0 for the first time since 1987 and will face the Wolfpack this Saturday.
Four ACC teams are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll (Oct. 9). No. 4 Clemson leads the way and is joined by No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 15 NC State and No. 18 Syracuse. North Carolina and Florida State are receiving votes.
No. 5 Clemson leads a group of five ACC teams ranked among the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA coaches poll. The Tigers are joined by No. 13 NC State, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 18 Syracuse and No. 25 North Carolina. Florida State and Pitt are receiving votes.
No. 14 Wake Forest has been ranked in the AP poll for a school-record 19 consecutive weeks - the longest active streak in the ACC. No. 15 NC State has been ranked in 13 consecutive AP polls, the Wolfpack’s longest streak since it was in 22 consecutive polls from Sept. 1992-Sept. 1993. No. 18 Syracuse is ranked in the AP poll this year for the first time since 2019.

Florida State is effectively tied for 36th with one vote. Oddly enough, Pitt, whose loss to Tennessee just keeps getting better every week, did not receive any AP votes (they did receive 4 votes from the coaches).

Here are the rankings by power conference, also from Fox CFB:

The ACC is a strong second in terms of depth, one behind the SEC and one ahead of the Big Ten.

Wraparound of ACC Matchups During Pitt’s Bye Week (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Ludwig)

Pitt was able to take the weekend off before heading to Louisville in a week, but that doesn’t mean the ACC as a whole took it easy.

There were only four games played in the ACC over the weekend, but the results, nonetheless, impacted Pitt’s path going forward. Of the eight teams that played Saturday, Pitt already played one (Virginia Tech) and will play four more (Miami, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina).

At 4-2 (1-1 ACC), Pitt is in solid shape in the ACC Coastal. But a game against North Carolina and the future of Georgia Tech will be huge in deciding Pitt’s fate in the quest to repeat as ACC Coastal champs.

So, how did those ACC games unfold this weekend?

Miami: 20, Virginia Tech: 14

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke continued his mid-season resurgence with a 351-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 20-14 win over Virginia Tech.

Miami jumped out to a 20-0 lead by the third quarter, and despite two fourth quarter Virginia Tech rushing touchdowns, it was too little, too late for the Hokies. Virginia Tech mustered just 257 total yards and turned the ball over once.

It was a win that pushed Miami back to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference this season, and perhaps even more importantly, served as a way to continue to boost Van Dyke.

Virginia Tech lost its fourth game in a row, dropping to 2-5 (1-3 ACC) this season.

Pitt has already defeated Virginia Tech this season, fueled by a record-breaking performance from Israel Abanikanda last weekend, and will play Miami on Nov. 26 in the last week of the season.

Syracuse: 24, North Carolina State: 9

Without quarterback Devin Leary, who will officially miss the remainder of the 2022 season, North Carolina State fell easily to Syracuse inside the JMA Wireless Dome.

Despite losing the turnover battle, a lack of offensive spark from the Wolfpack led to Syracuse’s balanced offensive attack (210 yards and two touchdowns from Garrett Shrader and 98 yards and a touchdown from Sean Tucker) leading to a 24-9 victory.

Biggest Losers 2022 Oct 15 (RX; HM)

Biggest Losers 2022 Oct 15

Ranked Losers

#3 Alabama lost by 3 at #6 Tennessee, 49-52
(101 combined points... remember SEC defense?)
#7 USC lost by 1 at #20 Utah, 42-43
A 2-point conversion was the difference.
#8 Oklahoma State lost by 3 at #13 TCU, 40-43
#10 Penn State lost by 24 at #5 Michigan, 17-41
Prior to this game, neither team had played a ranked opponent.
#15 NC State lost by 15 at #18 Syracuse, 9-24
#16 Miss. State lost by 10 at #22 Kentucky, 17-27
#19 Kansas lost by 10 at Oklahoma, 42-52
#25 James Madison lost by 7 at Georgia Southern, 38-45

Not a great day for shades of red - or for the SEC West vis-a-vis the SEC East.

Other Big Losers:

Notre Dame lost at home to Stanford by a deuce.
I really like Syracuse' chances in two weeks.

Best ACC TV Match-ups (2015-21) (RX; HM)

Best ACC TV Match-ups (2015-21)

Today I'm swamped by my "regular" job, but I did want to put this out...

Which matchups bring the highest TV ratings? We'll begin with the team that ESPN knows brings the viewers - that's why the ACC has a special scheduling agreement with them!

MTeam1Team2
9.212Notre DameClemson
4.681Notre DameMiami
4.615Notre DameFSU
4.360Notre DameLouisville
3.947Notre DameUVA

3.052Notre DamePitt
2.975Notre DameGT
2.641Notre DameBC
2.606Notre DameSyracuse
2.095Notre DameWake
3.840average
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish pull over 2 million viewers regardless of which ACC team they are playing, but some pairings reel in the big numbers: Clemson, Miami, FSU and Louisville all pulled over 4 million, while UVA, UNC, Duke, VT, NC State and Pitt were all over 3 million. The only matchups below 3 million, in fact, were GT, BC, Syracuse and Wake Forest.
Next up: Clemson

avgT1T2
6.160ClemsonUNC
4.444ClemsonVT
4.224ClemsonMiami

3.425average
Before you get too excited about the next Clemson/UNC game, let me point out that those are rare and dominated by a pair of ABC games (one, an ACC CCG). Tigers also drew over 4 million against VT, Miami, and Louisville. A bit surprising that FSU didn't average better - but the Noles have been down for awhile (and this only goes back to 2015).
Speaking of Florida State...

5.576FSUVT
3.177FSUMiami

1.862FSUSyracuse
1.672FSUUNC
1.603FSUBC
1.279FSUWake
2.548average
Not counting the games against Notre Dame and Clemson (already listed above), the next best draws for the Seminoles would be Virginia Tech and Miami, followed by Georgia Tech and Louisville. The Orange outdrew the Tar Heels, possibly due to the New York TV markets.
Finally, let's look at the "U"...

avgT1T2
3.800MiamiLouisville
2.159MiamiUVA
2.148MiamiPitt
2.093MiamiSyracuse
1.967MiamiUNC
1.657MiamiGT
1.406MiamiVT
1.360MiamiBC
1.273MiamiNC St
1.985average
Again, setting aside Notre Dame, Clemson, and Florida State, the next biggest draw for Miami has been Louisville, followed by UVa, Pitt, and Syracuse. I'm somewhat shocked to see GT and VT so low - perhaps that's why the Hokies and Hurricanes will no longer be an annual game starting next year.
DISCLAIMER: This research is based on 2015-2021 (7 seasons), but since many of these matchups were rarely played, this doesn't represent a lot of data. A better analysis should be possible after a few years of divisionless play.
That said, this is helpful if directing us to some matchups which seem guaranteed to fetch good TV numbers:

Notre Dame vs. Clemson, Miami, FSU and Louisville.
Clemson vs. UNC, VT, Miami, Louisville and FSU.
Florida State vs. VT, Miami, GT and Louisville.
and Miami vs. Louisville, UVA, Pitt and Syracuse.

2022 Midseason Report: After disappointing results, Miami finding some answers (247sports.com; Lake)

The Miami Hurricanes have reached the halfway point of the 2022 season.

Miami, who entered the season ranked No. 16 in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll and was picked by the ACC media in the preseason to win the Coastal Division, has been extremely average through the first six games of the season, sitting with a 3-3 overall record and a 1-1 showing in ACC play.

The first half of the season is defined by Mario Cristobal and this UM coaching staff learning about the personnel and making tweaks to the approach on offense and defense to best put the players in position to succeed.

Miami opened the season with an easy 70-13 win over Bethune-Cookman in week one. In week two, the Hurricanes got off to a slow start but eventually pulled away from Southern Miss for a 30-7 victory. UM traveled to Texas A&M for its first road test of the season and while the Hurricanes moved the ball fairly well, they couldn't punch the ball in the end-zone once they reached the red-zone and the Aggies prevailed 17-9.

Then in week four the unthinkable happened with Middle Tennessee State cruising to a comfortable 45-31 win over the Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium. The Blue Raiders held the lead the entire game and controlled the action on both sides of the ball. UM then had a bye week to get the issues from that game cleaned up, but lost its first ACC game to North Carolina, 27-24 in the next contest.

The vision: Micron housing boom would spread far beyond Clay, including lots of urban apartments (PS; $; Knauss)

The Central New York home building industry has steadily withered. Thirty years ago, builders in the Syracuse metro region constructed four times as many houses and apartments each year as they do today.

But a dramatic reversal is coming. Soon local home builders will be called upon to help house tens of thousands of new residents expected to move to the Syracuse area because Micron Technology plans to invest up to $100 billion building chip fabs in the suburban town of Clay.

It’s a huge opportunity, and a huge challenge.

One of the promises Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon made while courting Micron was that the region could build enough housing to accommodate up to 50,000 workers who are expected to take jobs at Micron or at companies that expand in Syracuse because of Micron.

County officials foresee a building boom that is heavy on apartment buildings, according to a presentation officials made to Micron last March. The presentation referred to Micron’s initiative as “Project Yankee.”

Although thousands of new single-family homes are expected, especially in Clay and other northern suburbs, the county document estimates that three out of four new housing units created in the coming years will be in multifamily buildings. About two-thirds of those apartments are likely to be in Syracuse, the county predicted.

Exactly how and where all the housing would get built remains to be seen. Clay and the other suburbs north of Syracuse would be likely to see big growth. But eventually the housing boom would affect the entire region, from the Syracuse Inner Harbor to southern Oswego County and beyond, experts say.

McMahon is asking town planning boards to consider loosening some restrictions on lot sizes or housing density if they stand in the way of development. Home builders say they are looking for guidance on when the workers will start coming, how many are likely to rent and how many to buy.
