Welcome to Day of the Ninja!

Created by Ninja Burger, a parody website that claims to be a sect of ninjas that can deliver fast food meals in under a half-hour to any place at any time, Day of the Ninja is a day when people dress like ninjas, do things that ninjas would do, and share information about ninjas online. The creators of the day have said the day should be used to "plague your co-workers with ninja-ness and wear a ninja mask to work," but said those who don't have to work today should "run wild in the streets, or dress like a ninja at the mall." They encourage everyone to make posts about ninjas all over the internet, such as by making posts on YouTube, putting links about ninjas on websites, and sharing photos of yourself wearing ninja outfits. They say the most important thing that can be done is to tell others about the day so that they can celebrate as well. They aren't too picky about how people celebrate, saying, "Just show the world that YOU ARE NINJA!"

Some quick takes on Syracuse football’s third bid to the Pinstripe Bowl, that game’s unique athletic director angle and SU’s basketball’s big (?) win over Notre Dame as soon as we applaud former Syracuse Chief Fred McGriff for making it to Cooperstown.

Pinstripe Bowl Bound ... Again

You can look at Syracuse football’s third trip to the Pinstripe Bowl one of two ways.

Been there, done that, or I’ll be back.

A trip to Yankee Stadium is an easy haul from Central New York, and the tri-state area has plenty of Orange alums ready to make the short trek to the Bronx. Selling tickets will not be an issue, no matter what Mother Nature brings in late December.

At least Syracuse football is back in a bowl game. You have to squint to see the memories of Eric Dungey and company celebrating SU’s last bowl win in 2018.

Now it’s a matter of sorting out who will actually be on the field on Dec. 29 for Syracuse and Minnesota.

Will we see a running back duel between Mohamed Ibrahim, who rushed for 1594 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, and Sean Tucker?

Pinstripe Bowl becomes Mark Coyle bowl: AD hired Babers and Fleck (PS' $; Leiker)

There will be a familiar face in the suites at Yankee Stadium when Syracuse football squares off against Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle served in the same position at Syracuse immediately prior to his move to the Big Ten school in 2016.

Despite only serving in the position at SU for less than a year before departing for “family reasons,” Coyle made one of the biggest decisions an athletic director can make by firing Scott Shafer and hiring Dino Babers to replace him.

Coyle, hired in June 2015, left Syracuse before Babers even coached his first game.

And less than a year into his tenure at Minnesota, Coyle made the same move for the Gophers, hiring P.J. Fleck to replace Tracy Claeys.

Fleck is 43-28 with the Gophers and has led them to three bowl game appearances.

Here’s what else to know about Minnesota (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) before it faces Syracuse on Dec. 29.

Top 5 in Big Ten on both sides of the ball

Minnesota’s defense gave up an average 13.3 points per game during the regular season, second-best in the Big Ten only to Illinois, which allowed 12.3.

The Gophers also had the No. 5 offense in their conference. They averaged 28.3 points per game and scored 42 total touchdowns.

That success on both sides of the ball translated nationally, too.

The Gopher defense finished No. 5 in the FBS for total defense. Opponents averaged 279.5 yards per game of offense and scored just 16 total touchdowns.

Minnesota also ranked third in the country for first-down defense, eighth for passing yards allowed and 15th in rushing defense.

On offense, the Gophers were No. 11 in rushing and No. 2 in time of possession, averaging 35 minutes controlling the ball per game.

The Orange will meet up with Minnesota in NYC on December 29 at 2 p.m. We know what to expect from SU, a team which has been decimated by injury and floundered against tougher competition. After an hot 5-0 start, the Orange lost five of their last six, and the win against Boston College didn’t exactly inspire much confidence. So how does Dino Babers’ team stack up with PJ Fleck’s? Let’s find out.

Offense

Tanner Morgan should be the Golden Gophers’ quarterback. He’s a sixth-year senior, and he’s spent a lot of time in a lot of cold weather against a lot of good defenses. However, he missed the last two games of the season with an upper body injury. His backup, Athan Kaliakmanis, hasn’t led the offense to the end zone a ton. Minnesota scored 33 combined points in its last two games, a loss to Iowa and a win over Wisconsin. But it’s the Big Ten, and you don’t need to do a whole lot of scoring to be successful. Kaliakmanis threw for 319 yards last week and two scores.

Syracuse earns Pinstripe Bowl invite, will play Minnesota (DO; Alandt)

After finishing the regular season 7-5, Syracuse will play in the Pinstripe Bowl against Minnesota on Dec. 29, according to Brett McMurphy of Action Network. It’ll be the third time the Orange will have played in the Pinstripe Bowl, with the last time coming in 2012. Overall, it’s the 27th time they’ve gone to a bowl game.

The Orange qualified for a bowl game for the second time in head coach Dino Babers’ seven years after beating then-No. 15 NC State and starting the season 6-0. Then the Orange lost five straight games, including two straight losses in which Syracuse didn’t score a touchdown. They finished off the year with a comeback win over Boston College to cement Babers’ second winning season at SU.

“I’m excited for our players to travel to New York City and experience all the fantastic events that come with a bowl trip as a reward for what they accomplished this year,” Babers said.

Syracuse has played the Golden Gophers five times, with the most recent matchup coming in the Texas Bowl at the end of the 2013 season. A last-minute touchdown run from quarterback Terrel Hunt granted Syracuse a seventh victory after a 21-17 win over Minnesota. The Orange will look to close out their second-winningest season under Babers.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers Football program will be finishing its 2022 season on December 29 in the Bronx. On Sunday afternoon, Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported that the Gophers will be taking part in this year's Pinstripe Bowl, taking on the ACC's Syracuse Orange.
Syracuse vs. Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ

All my live updates â¬ï¸College Football Bowl Game Tracker | Updates for All Confirmed Matchups
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) December 4, 2022
The Gophers will enter the Pinstripe Bowl with an 8-4 record on the season and winners of four of their last five games. P.J. Fleck's program finished off their 2022 regular season last Saturday with a 23-16 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe.
The Gophers this season started off strong winning each of their first four games before losing three straight to Purdue, Illinois, and Penn State. Their only other loss of the season came in their penultimate game to Iowa, 13-10.
The matchup between the Gophers and Orange will be the sixth matchup all-time and the first since 2013. In 2013, the Orange defeated the Gophers 21-17 in the 2013 Texas Bowl. The programs also faced each other in 1995, 1996, 2009, and 2012.
Under head coach P.J. Fleck, the Gophers are 3-0 in bowl games with wins over Georgia Tech, Auburn, and West Virginia. Last season, the Gophers defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 18-6 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
It will be the 23rd bowl game in Minnesota history with the Gophers owning a 10-12 record over their first 22 bowl games.

What to know about Syracuse:

The Orange started this season under Dino Babers hot, winning each of their first six games including wins over Louisville, Purdue, Virginia, and North Carolina State. However, a late October matchup with Clemson would begin a five-game skid for the Orange before they finished their regular season off with a 32-23 win over Boston College.
Offensively, the Orange are averaging 28.3 points and 365 yards per game this season. They experience most of their success through the air, averaging 223.8 yards per game while averaging just 142.1 yards on the ground. Quarterback Garrett Shrader, a Mississippi State transfer has had a solid year, completing 65% of his passes for 2,310 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Their most impactful player, however, is running back Sean Tucker who totaled 1,314 yards and 13 touchdowns from scrimmage this season.
Defensively, the Oranges are solid, allowing just 22.7 points per game this season. Opposing offenses have had a tough time running the ball against them, allowing just 3.8 yards per carry. Against the pass, they'll allow a high percentage of passes to be completed (66.6%) but only allow 188.8 yards per game. They've done a quality job as well of causing chaos with 19 forced turnovers on the season.

Gophers to play in Pinstripe Bowl vs. Syracuse (twincities.com; Greder)

Only five percent of the Gophers football team has visited New York City, but all will soon get a chance to check out Times Square, fold their pizza before eating it and maybe go ice skating at Rockefeller Center.

Minnesota accepted an invitation Sunday to play in the Pinstripe Bowl vs. Syracuse at 1 p.m. CT Thursday, Dec. 29, at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

“It truly is a destination for people to experience the holiday season, and we’ll be doing the same thing,” Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said.

The Gophers (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) settle for one of the lower-rung Big Ten-affiliated bowls but will try to make the most of it against the Orange (7-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).

When sharing the news of the bowl destination, Fleck said, players were polled on whether they had been to New York City. Fleck is a member of a small Gophers group that has, having coached in the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl when he was a part of Rutgers’ coaching staff when they played Iowa State at Yankee Stadium.

“I think it’s one of the best bowl experiences for student-athletes that you could possibly have,” Fleck said. “… You are talking about one the best times to be in New York City, but also for a bowl experience as well. … (It’s) one of my top three favorite bowl experiences … because it’s so different than most bowl experiences.

“Some just show you, ‘Hey, here’s the beach, have a good time, see you in five days.’ This is something that is in-depth, the culture and the excitement and Times Square and being in Manhattan.”

The Big Ten entered into an eight-year agreement with the Pinstripe Bowl with a goal of getting eight different conference teams in the game. Seven different Big Ten teams have played in it so far — Penn State, Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Maryland. Only the Hoosiers have lost the bowl game.

Of the Gophers’ other two possible bowl destinations, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl chose Maryland to play North Carolina State, and the Music City Bowl took Iowa to face Kentucky.

Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle hired both of the schools’ coaches. When Coyle was at Syracuse, he hired Dino Babers in 2015. After taking the same role at Minnesota in 2016, Coyle hired Fleck in 2017.

The Gophers staff started preparing for roughly eight different potential opponents last week, and Fleck narrowed that down to two teams as the dust settled on the bowl picture.

“Really good opponent, did really well in the ACC this year and won some big games,” Fleck said of Syracuse. “… Got a ton of respect for Dino and know him well. I know he will have his team prepared and it will be a great bowl game.”

Midseason, No. 18 Syracuse beat No. 15 North Carolina State and reached No. 14 in the nation before five straight losses to Clemson, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Florida State and Wake Forest. They beat Boston College in the regular-season finale.

Minnesota Accepts Invitation to Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl - University of Minnesota Athletics (gophersports.com)

The University of Minnesota football team has accepted an invitation to compete in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 29, 2022, in New York City.

The Gophers, who went 8-4 in the regular season for the second straight year, will face Syracuse from the ACC at historic Yankee Stadium. This will be the sixth-ever meeting between the Gophers and Orange. Minnesota is 3-2 overall against Syracuse, which finished the regular season with a 7-5 record.

"We are excited to face Syracuse in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl," said Head Coach P.J. Fleck. "There is no place in the world like New York City, and I am looking forward to our team experiencing its vibrancy, culture and history. I am also excited for our team to compete against the Orange in Yankee Stadium, which is one of the most iconic and well-known sporting venues in the world. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Babers and what he has done with his program, and I know our team is looking forward to competing again on Thursday, Dec. 29."

Sellers has led his high school to its first state title game: ‘A generational talent’ (PS; $; Leiker)

The night before Syracuse football executed a fourth-quarter comeback win over Boston College, one of its future players pulled off a similar act for his high school team.

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers, the top recruit in SU’s 2023 recruiting class, put together a complete game for South Florence High School (South Carolina) last Friday in its state semifinal game against A.C. Flora.

Tied at halftime at 21, the Bruins ended up outscoring the Falcons 22-6 in the final two quarters to advance to the state championship game.

“Those are the kind of games that he lives for,” Sellers’ coach, Andrew Marlowe, said. “I like the games where we’ve pretty much won at halftime, but kid’s a winner. He loves to battle.”

Sellers scored five of the team’s touchdowns on his feet, rushing for 225 yards, one of his highest totals of the season. He also had 140 passing yards.

South Florence plays Northwestern, a South Carolina high school blue blood, for the 4A state title at 7 p.m. Saturday. This is the first time the Bruins will compete in a state football championship, and Sellers is a big reason why they managed to get there this year.

Football: Newburgh Free Academy run comes to abrupt end in state championship (yahoo.com; Dougherty)

Jayden Lewis was three steps into the clear before Newburgh Free Academy had moved beyond the normal pregame jitters that come with a title game appearance.

Touchdown.

Lewis went 77 yards and into the end zone on the opening play of the NYSPHSAA Class AA championship game, sparking a 42-8 win for Bennett on Sunday at the JMA Wireless Dome. The Tigers got some redemption after falling to Carmel a year ago on this stage.

"They obviously prepared for us," Goldbacks standout Deondre Johnson said. "We did the same for them, but they had more bodies. They definitely had more bodies. We made it here, though, and I couldn’t be more proud of my team and these coaches."

NFA knew in an instant, this wasn't just another game or just another team.

"They started fast," Goldbacks coach Bill Bianco said. "Give them credit, they came and they hit it. You can see by watching the game, they have athletes everywhere. It is what it is. The kid found a seam and then bounced it. We had nobody there."

And it didn’t get any easier.

Newburgh settled in and created early scoring chances, but an interception in the Red Zone ended the first opportunity. It was only an 8-0 deficit when the first quarter came to a close. A fumble in the backfield ended the next opportunity and Ja’Meer Thomas scooped up the ball in a hurry and went 82 yards for a touchdown.

Bennett Tigers take home Class AA State Championship (wgrz.com; Staff)

The Bennett High School football team has a lot to celebrate this weekend.
On Sunday, the Tigers brought home the New York State Class AA Championship title, defeating the Newburgh Goldbacks 42-8.

The game took place at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, which was very special for one player on the team.

"This was a bang to the end of my career for high school and also the start of my career in college. I can't have a better ending than this," Rashard Perry said. Perry played on the same field he will be playing on next year for Syracuse University.

"I love these guys. I love my team. It was four long years," Jyden Lewis said after the game.

The win comes after a year full of adversity for Bennett. The team was forced to forfeit 6 games because of a paperwork mix-up.

They are only the second Buffalo school to ever win the state title.

"I am so happy for these kids and I am so happy for the City of Buffalo. And I am so happy to be representing Section VI football, this is just an unbelievable feeling. And you know what? I got bragging rights for one year!" Bennett head coach Steven McDuffie said after the game.
McDuffie credited the support the team got back home. Leading up to the game they were able to practice at the field house at UB as well as in the Bills' field house.
And after the students kept asking him if they were the best team he ever coached at Bennett, he now has a response.
"Absolutely, 100% you got it," McDuffie said he told the students.

Bennett brings state title back to Buffalo with runaway victory in AA football final (wivb.com; Bronstein)

Buffalo’s best football team asserted its state supremacy on the big domed stage.

Bennett won the NYSPHSAA Class AA championship in a resounding rout, 42-8 against Newburgh Free Academy on Sunday in the JMA Wireless Dome at Syracuse University.

“I’m so proud of these kids,” Bennett coach Steve McDuffie said. “This means the world, not only to these kids, but to represent the high school of Bennett, Western New York and the City of Buffalo.”

Having lost the state title game on the same field exactly one year ago, Bennett’s first state title avenged that defeat, as well as a controversial midseason sanction that threatened to derail its championship run. The Tigers (7-6) went undefeated after forfeiting four division wins when Section VI ruled that the program did not complete required transfer paperwork for a freshman player until after the season’s sixth week.

“All of the adversity that we had through Section VI really brought us together and made us a more tight-knit family,” McDuffie said. “If we look back on this 20-30 years from now, it will always be special.

“And I’ll make a prediction,” McDuffie mused. “We will always be the only state champion that is 7-6.”

Bennett is the second Buffalo Public Schools football team to claim a state championship, joining South Park, which won the Class A title in 2014. This is the sixth time since NYSPHSAA formed its largest classification in 1996 that a Section VI school has won the AA championship, and first since Jamestown in 2014.

“We did it at the highest level,” McDuffie said. “So we’ve got bragging rights for a whole year.”

McDuffie reflected on the Buffalo district’s move to disband the Harvard Cup league and join Section VI a decade ago.

What led to UNC football collapse vs. Clemson in ACC championship (yahoo.com; Holland)

With UNC in the red zone, looking to cut Clemson's ACC Championship game lead to one touchdown midway through the third quarter Saturday, the Tar Heels' redshirt freshman quarterback made a huge mistake.

A scrambling Drake Maye overthrew tight end John Copenhaver and Clemson sophomore cornerback Nate Wiggins made the interception. Then he ran it 98 yards at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium for a Tigers touchdown that would ultimately lead to a 39-10 victory and Clemson's seventh ACC title in the past eight seasons.

Cade Klubnik provided a needed spark at quarterback and Wiggins kept a pair of UNC drives empty with his end zone defense as the Tigers (11-2) ran away with their 21st ACC title.

Here's how it happened

No. 22 UNC (9-4) got off to a quick start, forcing a three-and-out on the No. 11 Tigers' first possession and then driving 78 yards on 11 plays in 14:03 to take a 7-0 lead on Maye's 3-yard run.

The Tar Heels forced another three-and-out on Clemson's second possession as starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei struggled. The junior completed just 2-of-5 passes for 10 yards before being pulled for Klubnik, who made an instant impact.

Clemson football eyes a new-look, wide-open ACC for the 2023 season (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

Unlike the vast majority of its predecessors, this year’s ACC Championship Game – the last title game pitting the Atlantic Division champion vs. the Coastal Division winner – is expected to be fairly competitive.

Clemson (10-2) is a 7½-point favorite against North Carolina (9-3) on Saturday night (8 p.m., ABC) in a game that will mark the end of divisional play in the ACC.

Welcome to the new-look, wide-open ACC.

In what shapes up as a redo of the COVID-impacted 2020 season, save for the absence of Notre Dame, the 14-team league will dissolve divisions next season and advance the two teams with the best winning percentage in conference play to the championship game.

The Atlantic Division has dominated the championship in recent years, with Pitt’s victory last December against Wake Forest representing the first Coastal Division success in the title game since 2010. During the Atlantic’s nine-game winning streak, Atlantic teams won by an average margin of 22½ points.

The Gasparilla Bowl, with a 5:30 p.m. (St. Louis time) kickoff on ESPN, is played at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Buccaneers.

“Really excited to be headed to Tampa to face Wake Forest in the ... They worked their tails off to get here and deserve the reward of a bowl trip. We were on the practice fields today and I was really impressed by the energy out there. We will keep preparing, finish off recruiting, finals week and then saddle up and get ready to match up with Coach (Dave) Clawson and the Demon Deacons in Tampa.”

COMMENTS:

Two ACC bowl games are played before Christmas this year - the Fenway Bowl (Louisville) and the Gasparilla Bowl (Wake Forest). Before you think that the ACC is being particularly disrespected in this regard, let me add that Washington St, Florida, #14 Oregon State, Baylor, and Missouri also play before XMas. It must be a sign of things to come; that's teams from every power conference except the Big you-know-what.
ACC Bowl season ends before New Year's Day. In fact, it ends before New Year's Eve. This is not the first time the ACC has lacked a bowl appearance on or after New Year's Day. The conference really needs to work on that.
On the other hand, the match-ups are compelling, IMO.

  • Cincinnati vs. Louisville is a true rivalry game interrupted by conference realignment.
  • North Carolina vs. Oregon is the current offensive wiz-kids vs. the old masters of offense.
  • Oklahoma vs. Florida State is a traditional heavyweight matchup.
  • Maryland vs. NC State is a traditional ACC rivalry interrupted by those greedy Terps.

The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency purchased this house on Burnet Road for $1 million in November. The December 2021 photo shows signs protesting the county's development of a chip fab site.Google Street View

$1 million for a modest ranch house. How Onondaga County bought up land for Micron (PS; $; Knauss)

Onondaga County just spent $1 million to buy one of the last homes standing in the way of the giant Micron Technology chip fab development planned in the town of Clay.

Paul and Robin Richer, who were among the last holdouts opposed to the county’s plans for their rural neighborhood, finally sold their three-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot residence on Burnet Road, according to a deed filed Nov. 28.

The $1 million selling price was nearly eight times the $125,749 value the town assessor put on the house and its three-quarter-acre lot.

County officials have bought out nearly every homeowner on Burnet Road, which extends into the middle of a mostly vacant 1,400-acre site where Micron plans to build up to four chip fabs. The land grab hasn’t been easy.

For two years, beginning long before Micron appeared, Burnet Road residents have howled about the county’s plans to acquire their homes to make way for an industrial park. They put up signs. They organized a website. They contacted a national advocacy law firm to fight for them.

But gradually the county bought out the owners, using a pinch of threat and a pound of cash.

A year ago, the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency voted to use its eminent domain powers, if necessary to acquire land for the project. It hasn’t come to that. Instead, flush with $20 million in stimulus cash from the federal government, OCIDA offered generous buyouts.

The most recent acquisitions have been among the most expensive.

In addition to the Richers’ $1 million sale, OCIDA recently paid $2.5 million for four parcels on Burnet Road owned by the Eleanor A. Caza Trust. The properties included two homes and about 36 acres, according to property records.

All told, the county has paid more than $25 million to buy land, on Burnet Road and other nearby areas, for its White Pine Commerce Park. Micron says it plans to invest up to $100 billion there to establish semiconductor manufacturing facilities over the next 20 years.
