Syracuse football: Revisiting the 2013 Texas Bowl against Minnesota (gopherhole.com; BleedGopher)

We’re just two days away from a Bowl rematch between the Syracuse Orange and Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Wait... rematch?
That’s right, SU actually faced off against Minnesota in the 2013 Texas Bowl and scraped out a 21-17 win at the Houston Texans’ Reliant Stadium (now NRG Stadium). Before the two squads clash again in the Bronx, let’s relive their previous bout in the Lone Star State:
During their first season in the ACC, the Orange went 6-6 and secured a bowl berth with Week 13 victory over Boston College. Minnesota meanwhile went 8-4 but came into bowl season on a two-game skid.
‘Cuse RB Jerome Smith got on the board first with a 1-yard rushing TD, his 12th of the season on the ground and 13th overall. The Gophers would only manage a field goal as retaliation before the half, giving SU a 7-3 lead with 30 minutes to play.
The star of the day was QB Terrel Hunt, who dashed his way into the endzone for the other two Orange touchdowns. First was a 5-yard dash up the middle and right through Minnesota defender. Then after the Golden Gophers had taken the lead late in the fourth, Hunt scrambled out of a blitz and once again ran over the goal-line, giving SU the lead for good.
Hunt was named the game’s MVP, throwing 19/29 for 188 yards and rushing for 74 more.
However, that final drive was set up by a fantastic 70-yard punt return by freshman Brisly Estime. The Orange then only needed to move the ball 14 yards to score, and their defense held off a last-minute counter for a third bowl win in four seasons.

Alright it’s just about here! We haven’t seen Syracuse Football in action in a month at this point. The 7-5 Orange look to defend home turf against the Gophers from Minnesota. SU beat Minny in a postseason game back in 2013. Now, the ‘Cuse tries to do the same nine years later and take down a Big Ten opponent for the second time this season.
The Gophers are an extremely good football team and better than their 8-4 record would suggest. The Block M claims a top 5 Big Ten offense as well as a top 2 defense when it comes to scoring.
Minnesota prides itself on running the football with bowling ball tailback Mohamed Ibrahim and a burly offensive line. This is a really tough draw for SU, but it’s a winnable game. Syracuse Football: Breakdown for Orange vs. Minnesota in Pinstripe Bowl (itlh; Nutting)
Syracuse football (7-5 overall, 4-4 in the ACC) is looking to bring another bowl trophy back to Syracuse, New York, and the Orange is looking to do it at Yankee Stadium against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4 overall, 5-4 in the Big Ten) in the 2022 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.
Syracuse football is seeking its first bowl victory since the 2018 Camping World Bowl, as they will have to take on a team that they have met before in the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Back in the 2013 Texas Bowl, these two teams would battle, which resulted in former Orange quarterback Terrel Hunt rushing for the game-winning 12-yard rushing touchdown to win, 21-17.
Syracuse football is coming into the game missing a few players, either due to the transfer portal or declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft, most notable being starting running back Sean Tucker (#34), who leaves the Orange after three incredible seasons with Syracuse. This will be a tough task for the Orange, as they get ready to face a team known for its rushing offense and stopping the run game in the Golden Gophers.
Garrett Shrader (QB #6)– Shrader will need to step up in this game, where he not only needs to think with his arms, but he will need to think with his feet as well. Shrader has 2,310 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns, but he also has 415 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns as well. He will not have his star running back in Tucker by his side, but as long a Shrader surveys the field, sees an opening to make the big play in passing or rushing, and makes the play happen to where the offense is moving, he will have no problem against this Gophers defense.

Syracuse football: previewing the Pinstripe Bowl with The Daily Gopher (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
We at TNIAAM consider ourselves Syracuse Orange experts, but we definitely aren’t Minnesota Gophers experts. And with the Orange playing the Gophers in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, it’d be nice to get a Minnesota expert in to shed some light on Syracuse’s next foe. Luckily for us, Blake Ruane from The Daily Gopher is a Minnesota expert and kindly answered some questions about the Gophers.
TNIAAM: Syracuse and Minnesota last played in the 2013 Texas Bowl. Do you remember anything from that game?
TDG: I remember that I didn’t like the ending. Minnesota had rallied from a 14-3 fourth quarter deficit to take a 17-14 lead, sparked by second-string quarterback Mitch Leidner. But once they took the lead, the Gophers’ offense couldn’t move the ball at all, culminating in a 70-yard punt return by Syracuse. The Orange converted that short field into a go-ahead touchdown, resulting in a final score of 21-17. It was Minnesota’s second straight Texas Bowl loss, and it led to the eventual transfer of starting quarterback Philip Nelson. Leidner took over and was the Gophers’ starting signal caller for the next three years — for better and for worse.
TNIAAM: How’s Mark Coyle doing? We got to enjoy him for 311 days before he left for Minnesota.
TDG: I’m sorry you didn’t at least get a full calendar year of the Mark Coyle experience, but I must tell you, it’s not much to write home about. He keeps a very low profile. Seems to like it here, though.
TNIAAM: It’s been an interesting season for Minnesota. A four game winning streak followed by a three game losing streak followed by a 4-1 record in the last five games. What happened after the losing streak to right the ship?
TDG: Well that three-game losing streak came against three good teams. Those three teams combined to finish the regular season 26-11. The four teams that Minnesota beat in their last five games finished 15-33. Playing against inferior competition was what righted the ship for the Gophers. Offensively, Minnesota struggled to move the ball consistently during that three-game skid, especially through the air. Against overmatched opponents, they were able to hand the ball off to Mohamed Ibrahim and bulldoze their way to victory. The passing game did finally show signs of life in the regular season finale, but for much of the season it was their Achilles’ heel.

Syracuse and Minnesota square off in the Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday. All Syracuse caught up with Ryan Burns of Gopher Illustrated to get the inside scoop on the Orange's opponent.
Q: Who do you expect to start at QB? What are his strengths and weaknesses?
Burns: I expect Athan Kaliakmanis to start at quarterback, but if Tanner Morgan is finally cleared to play, I wouldn't be shocked to see both of them. Morgan was knocked out of the Nebraska game with his second concussion in almost as many weeks, and then didn't practice for the rest of November because he was in the protocol. The senior quarterback holds career records of most career wins (33), most accurate quarterback with completion percentage, and is second in career completions, attempts and passing yards. But there's no doubt that the Greek Rifle, aka Kalikamanis, is the future of this football team. He's a bigger, faster and more athletic quarterback than Morgan, but he's also younger and isn't afraid to take some risks.
With a couple of key members of the Orange secondary not playing in this game, I'd imagine that regardless of quarterback, the Gophers will test them.
Q: What makes Mo Ibrahim so good?
Burns: I know that Syracuse fans are used to watching really good running backs after watching Sean Tucker all year, but Mo Ibrahim is on a different level in my eyes. He ranked second in FBS football in yards after contact this season with 1,065 rushing yards. You read that right. This isn't meant as a shot across the bow for Orange fans, but he literally had more yards after contact than Tucker had rushing yards this season.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. RV/RV Minnesota (8-4, 5-4 B1G) makes its 23rd all-time bowl appearance on Thursday, Dec. 29, when it faces Syracuse (7-5, 4-4 ACC) in the 2022 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. The game will be held at Yankee Stadium at 1 p.m. with ESPN televising and radio coverage provided by ESPN Radio and KFAN.
2. Minnesota has a pair of All-Americans in center John Michael Schmitz and running back Mohamed Ibrahim. Schmitz was named a first-teamer by the AP and FWAA and a second-teamer by the AFCA and Walter Camp. He's the first Gopher to be a First-Team All-American since Antoine Winfield Jr. in 2019 and the first such offensive lineman since Greg Eslinger in 2005. A finalist for the Rimington Trophy, Schmitz anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota also ranks 17th in sacks allowed at 1.08 per game and tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss per game allowed at 4.33. Ibrahim, meanwhile, has been tabbed to the second-team for the AFCA, AP, FWAA and Walter Camp teams. This is the second time in his career that Ibrahim has been named an All-American by the AP, as he was a Third Team selection in 2020. Eslinger (2004-05) was the last Gopher to be an All-American in multiple seasons for Minnesota. Ibrahim, who played in 11 games, finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards at 1,594 and second in the country in rushing yards per game at 144.9. He tied for second in the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns and tied for third in scoring with 10.4 points per game.
3. Minnesota boasts one of the best and most well-rounded defenses in the nation under defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. The Golden Gophers rank fifth in the country by allowing 279.5 total yards per contest. They also have the No. 4 defense in terms of scoring (13.3 ppg), No. 8 in passing yards allowed (173.7) and the No. 15 rush defense (105.8). Minnesota, Air Force, Illinois, and Iowa are the only teams in the FBS that rank in the top 20 in each of those categories.
4. The Golden Gophers are 10-12 in their history in bowl games, but they have won five straight bowl contests, including all three appearances under head coach P.J. Fleck (2021 Guaranteed Rate Bowl, 2020 Outback, 2018 Quick Lane). The five-game bowl winning streak is the second longest active streak in the country. Only Alabama (excluding national championship game appearances) has a longer streak with seven straight wins.
5. The 2022 campaign is the sixth for head coach P.J. Fleck at Minnesota, where he holds a record of 43-27. He is already fifth in program history for wins and sixth in Big Ten wins (26) and games coached (70). Fleck's .614 win percentage is third best among the 11 Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games under their helm behind only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, '45-50). In his 10th season overall as a college head coach, Fleck is 73-49 (.598).

Syracuse (7-5, 4-4 ACC) opened 6-0 and rose to No. 14 in the poll, but dropped five straight to kill off chance of capturing the Atlantic division.
History: Minnesota has won five straight bowl games dating back to the 2015 Citrus Bowl. The U is 3-2 all-time vs. the Orange, with all games coming after 1995. Syracuse won the previous matchup, 21-17 in the Texas Bowl in Houston in 2013.
Key matchup: Gophers QB Athan Kaliakmanis vs. Orange’s 3-3-5 defensive scheme. Syracuse DC Tony White left for Nebraska after the regular season but Minnesota OC Kirk Ciarrocca is concerned about the way interim DC Nick Monroe, of Mahtomedi, Minn., will continue to disguise coverages presnap to confuse the redshirt freshman signal caller. ”It will be a great test,” Ciarrocca said. Then Kaliakmanis will do it again in the 2023 season opener vs. White’s new team, Nebraska, at Huntington Bank Stadium.
Who has the edge?
Gophers offense vs. Syracuse defense: RB Mo Ibrahim can put a cherry atop an amazing career; the sixth-year player is less than 60 yards away from setting the program’s career and single-season rushing records. Syracuse’s defense gave up at least 200 rushing yards in four of their five straight losses into late November. … Kaliakmanis threw for a career-high 319 yards and two touchdowns in the 23-16 win over Wisconsin on Nov. 26. The Orange had a top 20 passing defense, but key starters S Ja’Had Carter and CB Duce Chestnut both opted out of the bowl. … Marlowe Wax is a difference maker; the LB leads the team with 89 tackles, six tackles for lost yards, 4 1/2 sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. … QB Tanner Morgan hasn’t played since Nebraska on Nov. 5, but it would be nice for the winningest quarterback in school history to possibly get a cameo in his final collegiate game. Gophers defense vs. Syracuse offense: The Orange lost its most reliable offensive weapon when RB Sean Tucker opted out of the bowl to prepare for the NFL draft. Tucker rushed for 1,060 yards and 11 touchdowns and was second on the team with 36 receptions for 254 yards and two scores. Backup RB LeQuint Allen averaged 6.9 yards per carry on 26 carries in 2022. Minnesota’s rushing defense is 15th in the nation, giving up a paltry 106 per game. … Gophers DC Joe Rossi compared 6-foot-4, 230-pound QB Garrett Shrader to former Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger due to his physical size to withstand hits, his mobility and because of his big arm. Shrader is 25th in the nation with a 154.6 QB rating. … Syracuse QB coach Jason Beck was elevated to OC after Robert Anae left for same job at North Carolina State. Tyler Nubin missed the win over the Badgers with a broken right hand. Head coach P.J. Fleck said Nubin would be available for the bowl game, but the fourth-year senior is still dealing with the injury. Regardless of if Nubin plays Thursday, he said he will return to the U in 2023. Special teams: K Matthew Trickett converted 83 percent of his field goals this season, while ‘Cuse K Andre Szmyt made only 75 percent. K Dragan Kesich leads the nation with touchbacks on 88 percent of his kickoffs this season. KR Quintin Redding is looking to recreate the 92-yard kickoff return against Illinois in October. Pinstripe Bowl Prediction: Syracuse vs. Minnesota to Finish Out the Season in Yankee Stadium (athlonsports.com; Scott)
Two former MAC coaches will lead their Power 5 programs into battle in Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
Dino Babers' Syracuse Orange come into the Pinstripe Bowl with a 7-5 record after starting the season 6-0. That early start had many people around the country tossing Syracuse around as a possible New Year's Six Bowl participant. Sadly for the Orange, five straight losses ended that possibility. They were able to log a win again rival Boston College to end the season.
P.J. Fleck's Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) shot out of the gates with a 4-0 record and had many mentioning them as the favorites to win the Big Ten West. An injury to star running back Mohamed Ibrahim and three subsequent conference losses made that a taller order. Minnesota won four of its last five games, but the loss to Iowa eliminated the Gophers from Big Ten West contention. They finished the regular season with a road win over rival Wisconsin.
Babers and Fleck have some familiarity with each other when both were leading MAC teams earlier in their coaching tenures. Babers was at Bowling Green from 2014-15 before taking over at Syracuse whereas Fleck was leading Western Michigan during that same time before coming to Minneapolis in Dec. 2016. The coaches met twice in conference play when they overlapped, splitting the two meetings.
This will be the sixth head-to-head meeting between Minnesota and Syracuse. The Gophers hold a slim 3-2 edge, but the Orange won the recent encounter, a 21-17 victory in the 2013 Texas Bowl.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) close out the 2022 season on Thursday in a Pinstripe Bowl matchup with the Syracuse Orange (7-5) at Yankee Stadium at 1 p.m. CT.
Can Syracuse score on offense?
The Orange will have a new offensive coordinator for the Pinstripe Bowl. Quarterbacks coach Jason Beck was promoted to the position on Dec. 9 after previous offensive coordinator Robert Anae left to take the same position at NC State. Beck and Anae have been attached at the hip for a decade, with stints together at BYU, Virginia, and Syracuse over the past 10 years.
Beck has been credited with shepherding the development of Syracuse quarterback Garrett Schrader, a former Mississippi State transfer who was instrumental in leading the Orange to a 6-0 start this season. Through the first six games, Schrader was 106-of-152 (69.7%) for 1,434 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions to go along with 300 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. But he struggled in the second half, hampered by injuries. Over the final six-game stretch, during which he was sidelined for a game against Pittsburgh, Schrader was 67-of-114 (58.7%) for 876 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, along with only 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Syracuse is likely hoping that the month-long layoff between the end of the regular season and the Pinstripe Bowl will provide enough time for Schrader to get at least close to a hundred percent. The Orange offense is at its best when it is able to use the entire field in the passing game. Nine different pass catchers have caught at least one touchdown for Syracuse this season, but their most dangerous weapon is 6’5”, 216-lb. wide-receiver-turned-tight-end Oronde Gadsden II. He is a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses and leads the Orange in receptions (54), receiving yards (891 receiving yards), and receiving touchdowns (6).

Know Your Minnesota Football Foe: Syracuse Orange (247sports.com; Burns)
Before each Minnesota football game, GopherIllustrated will ask five questions of an opposing beat writer. This week, we spoke with Syracuse beat writer Mike McAllister of FanNation to preview the Gophers' Pinstripe Bowl game opponent in the Syracuse Orange.
1) After a 6-0 start to the season, Dino Babers and Syracuse lost five of their last six games. What happened in the first part of the year, that couldn't be replicated in the second half?
MM: There were two big reasons for the significant change in results. First, the schedule got significantly more difficult. In those five games, Syracuse played at Clemson, Notre Dame at home, at rival Pittsburgh, Florida State at home and at Wake Forest. While neither Pitt nor Wake are what they were last year, the other three are legitimate top 20 caliber teams and it was too much over that stretch combined with the second reason. That being injuries. Garrett Shrader suffered an injury that took away his mobility in the first half against Notre Dame (he did not play the second half), caused him to miss the game at Pittsburgh and was significantly limited against Florida State. That combined with injuries to the offensive line, defensive line, linebackers and secondary really hurt the Orange during those five games.
2) What's the injury/transfer/opt-out situation like for Syrcuse on both sides of the ball heading into the bowl game?
MM: Here are starters from the opener out for this game due to injury, transfer or opt-out:

3) What are QB1 Garrett Shrader's biggest strengths and weaknesses, and what's the running game going to look like without Sean Tucker?
MM: Shrader has taken significant strides in the offseason and grown a lot as a quarterback. What makes his dynamic is his mobility and dual threat ability. He can take over a game with his legs and has had plenty of 70+ rushing yard performances with multiple touchdowns during the last two seasons. Last season, accuracy was a big, big weakness along with decision making at times. With that aforementioned growth, that has improved significantly this season. Still, Shrader's arm strength is his biggest weakness. While he can make passes down the field, he lacks that elite zip or power behind his throws that you see in a lot of big time quarterbacks. That is why he can struggle with teams that can play good man coverage.

Which former Syracuse football players are headed to the NFL playoffs?
Kingsley Jonathan is the only SU alumnus who’s clinched a postseason bid (so far) as the Buffalo Bills lead the AFC East with a 12-3 record. Jonathan played 18 snaps and got a tackle in his debut with the Bills during a 35-13 win Saturday against his former team, the Chicago Bears, after being waived halfway through the season.
The Bills are currently in first place in the AFC, where four other teams have clinched playoffs: Kansas City Chiefs (12-3), Cincinnati Bengals (11-4), Baltimore Ravens (10-5) and Los Angeles Chargers (9-6). Seven teams have a chance of taking the conference’s final two spots, including the Jacksonville Jaguars (with Orange alum Andre Cisco) with an AFC South-leading 7-8 record and the long-shot Las Vegas Raiders (with Chandler Jones) at 6-9 in the AFC West.
In the NFC, four teams have clinched playoffs: The Philadelphia Eagles (13-2), Minnesota Vikings (12-3), San Francisco 49ers (11-4) and Dallas Cowboys (11-4). The final three slots are up for grabs by eight teams, including the 7-8 Seattle Seahawks (with injured SU alum Alton Robinson) and the 7-8 Detroit Lions (with former Orange cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu).

The 2022 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl takes place Thursday, December 29 (12/29/2022) as the Syracuse Orange and Minnesota Golden Gophers clash at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
It’s not a bad commute for Syracuse fans, and the good news is there are plenty of tickets available for the big game, which, for the Orange, is their first bowl appearance since 2018. Ticketmaster has standard admission tickets starting at $72.20, but fans may be able to find better deals and better seats if they shop around at resellers like StubHub, VividSeats and more.

It’s been a turbulent offseason for Syracuse, who will be without a handful of its 2022 starters for the game, including cornerback Duce Chestnut and safety Ja’Had Carter, who departed SU via the transfer portal. Running back Sean Tucker also announced that he is opting-out of the bowl as he prepares for the 2023 NFL Draft.
Quarterback Garrett Shrader and his favorite receiving target, tight end Oronde Gadsden, are still set to appear at the Pinstripe Bowl game, however.

North Carolina, to date, has indulged all the same Holiday Bowl festivities that N.C. State did in San Diego at this time last year.
The Tar Heels have seen the whales and dolphins at SeaWorld, visited the famous zoo — the late Louie Anderson once quipped, “It’s like $50 to get in. I said, ‘Lady, we just want to look at the animals” — and toured an active aircraft carrier.
The Wolfpack made it that far. North Carolina should get to do more than merely wander around Petco Park and play in the actual football game there, unlike N.C. State.
It feels like ages in our increasingly post-pandemic world, but it was only a year ago that UCLA bailed on the Holiday Bowl a few hours before the game, leaving the Wolfpack all dressed up at the hotel with nowhere to go but home.
N.C. State’s players took the bowl trophy with them, briefly claimed a 10th win and were left generally unfulfilled by the way circumstances unfolded, especially after UCLA coach Chip Kelly proclaimed, the day before, that “if we have 11, we will play,” even with several key players already ruled out.

Bowl season is in full swing and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is represented by nine programs.
The ACC is tied with the Big Ten for the second-most teams in bowl games. Each is behind the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which leads with 12 teams.
The nine-team mark is an improvement from the six bids earned by the ACC in 2021, which finished 2-4 and didn't send a representative to the College Football Playoff for the first time in its existence.
Through two games, the ACC is 2-0. Louisville defeated Cincinnati 24-7 in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Dec. 17, while Wake Forest beat Missouri 27-17 in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 23.

Head Coach Dino Babers and the Orange began the regular season 6-0 but dropped six consecutive games before closing with a victory against Boston College. They'll be without junior running back Sean Tucker, who led Syracuse with 1,060 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.
Although it's just their fifth bowl game since 2010, the Orange have won four straight bowl games.

A star college quarterback reportedly plans on transferring to a prestigious program.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Wake Forest's Sam Hartman intends to enter the transfer portal. Thamel called Notre Dame the "strong favorite" to land the 23-year-old.
Hartman threw 38 touchdowns in his fifth season with the Demon Deacons, giving him an ACC-record 110 passing touchdowns over his college career. Obtaining Hartman would be a massive win for a Notre Dame squad that went 8-4 without much of an aerial attack this season.
"Our god is an awesome god," Notre Dame alum Mike Golic Jr. exclaimed on Twitter.
"If true, it’d be the best use of the portal by a player & the best get by a top program," former Arkansas quarterback Clint Stoerner said. "Sam gets paid, fills a huge need & will have a shot at a title. ND gets top 2022 portal QB, bought a shot at a title & bought themselves a [year] to fix the most embarrassing QB room in CFB."

From Jared Paventi: I should have known better. I got one order of peach cobbler from A Touch of Soul in Solvay, and I knew my wife would claim it. She was kind enough to share a small spoonful of this warm dessert oozing with a cinnamon-infused peach filling and a cinnamon top layer of pie crust. It was amazing and I should have ordered two. My consolation prize was the banana pudding, which was more like a bread pudding.
The fluffy mousse-like dessert hid a cake base and was studded with slices of fresh banana. Had the peach cobbler not been available, this dessert would still make the list.
From Jared Paventi: A $6 brownie, and there were no nuts, ice cream or frosting in sight. A thin veneer of flaky chocolate broke open to a gooey fudge center. No hyperbole here: It’s the best brownie I have ever eaten. You think you want some milk or ice cream on the side, but this brownie stands alone and is the brownie all other brownies aspire to be.

From Jared Paventi: Dessert at Riley’s is an “if you know, you know” situation. Made daily in the upstairs kitchen, you plan on dessert at Riley’s, eschewing large entrees or the extra starter to ensure that you’ve left room. Here, we get a flourless chocolate cake that was thick and dense like a fudge. Chocolate and hazelnut are such a natural pairing, and each forkful was spiked with the nutty liqueur, cutting the bitter chocolate of the cake.

Today is dedicated to calling a friend that lives far away that won't be seen during the holidays. Syracuse football: Revisiting the 2013 Texas Bowl against Minnesota (gopherhole.com; BleedGopher)

We’re just two days away from a Bowl rematch between the Syracuse Orange and Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Wait... rematch?
That’s right, SU actually faced off against Minnesota in the 2013 Texas Bowl and scraped out a 21-17 win at the Houston Texans’ Reliant Stadium (now NRG Stadium). Before the two squads clash again in the Bronx, let’s relive their previous bout in the Lone Star State:
During their first season in the ACC, the Orange went 6-6 and secured a bowl berth with Week 13 victory over Boston College. Minnesota meanwhile went 8-4 but came into bowl season on a two-game skid.
‘Cuse RB Jerome Smith got on the board first with a 1-yard rushing TD, his 12th of the season on the ground and 13th overall. The Gophers would only manage a field goal as retaliation before the half, giving SU a 7-3 lead with 30 minutes to play.
The star of the day was QB Terrel Hunt, who dashed his way into the endzone for the other two Orange touchdowns. First was a 5-yard dash up the middle and right through Minnesota defender. Then after the Golden Gophers had taken the lead late in the fourth, Hunt scrambled out of a blitz and once again ran over the goal-line, giving SU the lead for good.
Hunt was named the game’s MVP, throwing 19/29 for 188 yards and rushing for 74 more.
However, that final drive was set up by a fantastic 70-yard punt return by freshman Brisly Estime. The Orange then only needed to move the ball 14 yards to score, and their defense held off a last-minute counter for a third bowl win in four seasons.

Alright it’s just about here! We haven’t seen Syracuse Football in action in a month at this point. The 7-5 Orange look to defend home turf against the Gophers from Minnesota. SU beat Minny in a postseason game back in 2013. Now, the ‘Cuse tries to do the same nine years later and take down a Big Ten opponent for the second time this season.
The Gophers are an extremely good football team and better than their 8-4 record would suggest. The Block M claims a top 5 Big Ten offense as well as a top 2 defense when it comes to scoring.
Minnesota prides itself on running the football with bowling ball tailback Mohamed Ibrahim and a burly offensive line. This is a really tough draw for SU, but it’s a winnable game. Don’t forget, Syracuse beat the Big Ten West Division Champions in Purdue earlier this year. Here are SU’s keys to win the bowl game:
1. AVOID 3RD AND LONG SITUATIONS
This is true for every game but especially this one. Minnesota represents the top 3rd down defense in the Big Ten Conference. The Gophers hold to just a 26% conversion rate. On the flip side, SU wasn’t terribly great in the chain moving statistic. The Orange slotted in the 10th spot out of 14 teams in the ACC with just a 36% first down pickup rate. No Sean Tucker in this game for Syracuse, so SU doesn’t have a guy in the backfield it can trust to snag a bundle of yards when needed. New OC Jason Beck needs to play every sequence strategically and grab yards in chunks to avoid 3rd and long movies.2. POSSESS THE FOOTBALL
Obviously you must do this to score but boy oh boy, Minnesota really makes the pigskin feel at home. The Gophers lead the Big Ten and hold the rock for over 35 minutes per game. Syracuse is really down in numbers from a holistic roster standpoint. If the Gophers have the leather for 30 minutes or more, there’s no shot SU is winning this game....

Syracuse football (7-5 overall, 4-4 in the ACC) is looking to bring another bowl trophy back to Syracuse, New York, and the Orange is looking to do it at Yankee Stadium against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4 overall, 5-4 in the Big Ten) in the 2022 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.
Syracuse football is seeking its first bowl victory since the 2018 Camping World Bowl, as they will have to take on a team that they have met before in the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Back in the 2013 Texas Bowl, these two teams would battle, which resulted in former Orange quarterback Terrel Hunt rushing for the game-winning 12-yard rushing touchdown to win, 21-17.
Syracuse football is coming into the game missing a few players, either due to the transfer portal or declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft, most notable being starting running back Sean Tucker (#34), who leaves the Orange after three incredible seasons with Syracuse. This will be a tough task for the Orange, as they get ready to face a team known for its rushing offense and stopping the run game in the Golden Gophers.
Syracuse football has a big challenge awaiting in Minnesota out of the Big Ten in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Player To WatchGarrett Shrader (QB #6)– Shrader will need to step up in this game, where he not only needs to think with his arms, but he will need to think with his feet as well. Shrader has 2,310 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns, but he also has 415 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns as well. He will not have his star running back in Tucker by his side, but as long a Shrader surveys the field, sees an opening to make the big play in passing or rushing, and makes the play happen to where the offense is moving, he will have no problem against this Gophers defense.

Syracuse football: previewing the Pinstripe Bowl with The Daily Gopher (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
We at TNIAAM consider ourselves Syracuse Orange experts, but we definitely aren’t Minnesota Gophers experts. And with the Orange playing the Gophers in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, it’d be nice to get a Minnesota expert in to shed some light on Syracuse’s next foe. Luckily for us, Blake Ruane from The Daily Gopher is a Minnesota expert and kindly answered some questions about the Gophers.
TNIAAM: Syracuse and Minnesota last played in the 2013 Texas Bowl. Do you remember anything from that game?
TDG: I remember that I didn’t like the ending. Minnesota had rallied from a 14-3 fourth quarter deficit to take a 17-14 lead, sparked by second-string quarterback Mitch Leidner. But once they took the lead, the Gophers’ offense couldn’t move the ball at all, culminating in a 70-yard punt return by Syracuse. The Orange converted that short field into a go-ahead touchdown, resulting in a final score of 21-17. It was Minnesota’s second straight Texas Bowl loss, and it led to the eventual transfer of starting quarterback Philip Nelson. Leidner took over and was the Gophers’ starting signal caller for the next three years — for better and for worse.
TNIAAM: How’s Mark Coyle doing? We got to enjoy him for 311 days before he left for Minnesota.
TDG: I’m sorry you didn’t at least get a full calendar year of the Mark Coyle experience, but I must tell you, it’s not much to write home about. He keeps a very low profile. Seems to like it here, though.
TNIAAM: It’s been an interesting season for Minnesota. A four game winning streak followed by a three game losing streak followed by a 4-1 record in the last five games. What happened after the losing streak to right the ship?
TDG: Well that three-game losing streak came against three good teams. Those three teams combined to finish the regular season 26-11. The four teams that Minnesota beat in their last five games finished 15-33. Playing against inferior competition was what righted the ship for the Gophers. Offensively, Minnesota struggled to move the ball consistently during that three-game skid, especially through the air. Against overmatched opponents, they were able to hand the ball off to Mohamed Ibrahim and bulldoze their way to victory. The passing game did finally show signs of life in the regular season finale, but for much of the season it was their Achilles’ heel.

Behind Enemy Lines: Minnesota Golden Gophers (SI; McAllister)
Syracuse and Minnesota square off in the Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday. All Syracuse caught up with Ryan Burns of Gopher Illustrated to get the inside scoop on the Orange's opponent.
Q: Who do you expect to start at QB? What are his strengths and weaknesses?
Burns: I expect Athan Kaliakmanis to start at quarterback, but if Tanner Morgan is finally cleared to play, I wouldn't be shocked to see both of them. Morgan was knocked out of the Nebraska game with his second concussion in almost as many weeks, and then didn't practice for the rest of November because he was in the protocol. The senior quarterback holds career records of most career wins (33), most accurate quarterback with completion percentage, and is second in career completions, attempts and passing yards. But there's no doubt that the Greek Rifle, aka Kalikamanis, is the future of this football team. He's a bigger, faster and more athletic quarterback than Morgan, but he's also younger and isn't afraid to take some risks.
With a couple of key members of the Orange secondary not playing in this game, I'd imagine that regardless of quarterback, the Gophers will test them.
Q: What makes Mo Ibrahim so good?
Burns: I know that Syracuse fans are used to watching really good running backs after watching Sean Tucker all year, but Mo Ibrahim is on a different level in my eyes. He ranked second in FBS football in yards after contact this season with 1,065 rushing yards. You read that right. This isn't meant as a shot across the bow for Orange fans, but he literally had more yards after contact than Tucker had rushing yards this season.

1. RV/RV Minnesota (8-4, 5-4 B1G) makes its 23rd all-time bowl appearance on Thursday, Dec. 29, when it faces Syracuse (7-5, 4-4 ACC) in the 2022 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. The game will be held at Yankee Stadium at 1 p.m. with ESPN televising and radio coverage provided by ESPN Radio and KFAN.
2. Minnesota has a pair of All-Americans in center John Michael Schmitz and running back Mohamed Ibrahim. Schmitz was named a first-teamer by the AP and FWAA and a second-teamer by the AFCA and Walter Camp. He's the first Gopher to be a First-Team All-American since Antoine Winfield Jr. in 2019 and the first such offensive lineman since Greg Eslinger in 2005. A finalist for the Rimington Trophy, Schmitz anchored an offensive line that featured four new starters and helped pave the way for the nation's No. 11 rushing offense, as the Gophers ran for 218.2 yards per game. Minnesota also ranks 17th in sacks allowed at 1.08 per game and tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss per game allowed at 4.33. Ibrahim, meanwhile, has been tabbed to the second-team for the AFCA, AP, FWAA and Walter Camp teams. This is the second time in his career that Ibrahim has been named an All-American by the AP, as he was a Third Team selection in 2020. Eslinger (2004-05) was the last Gopher to be an All-American in multiple seasons for Minnesota. Ibrahim, who played in 11 games, finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards at 1,594 and second in the country in rushing yards per game at 144.9. He tied for second in the nation with 19 rushing touchdowns and tied for third in scoring with 10.4 points per game.
3. Minnesota boasts one of the best and most well-rounded defenses in the nation under defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. The Golden Gophers rank fifth in the country by allowing 279.5 total yards per contest. They also have the No. 4 defense in terms of scoring (13.3 ppg), No. 8 in passing yards allowed (173.7) and the No. 15 rush defense (105.8). Minnesota, Air Force, Illinois, and Iowa are the only teams in the FBS that rank in the top 20 in each of those categories.
4. The Golden Gophers are 10-12 in their history in bowl games, but they have won five straight bowl contests, including all three appearances under head coach P.J. Fleck (2021 Guaranteed Rate Bowl, 2020 Outback, 2018 Quick Lane). The five-game bowl winning streak is the second longest active streak in the country. Only Alabama (excluding national championship game appearances) has a longer streak with seven straight wins.
5. The 2022 campaign is the sixth for head coach P.J. Fleck at Minnesota, where he holds a record of 43-27. He is already fifth in program history for wins and sixth in Big Ten wins (26) and games coached (70). Fleck's .614 win percentage is third best among the 11 Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games under their helm behind only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, '45-50). In his 10th season overall as a college head coach, Fleck is 73-49 (.598).

History: Minnesota has won five straight bowl games dating back to the 2015 Citrus Bowl. The U is 3-2 all-time vs. the Orange, with all games coming after 1995. Syracuse won the previous matchup, 21-17 in the Texas Bowl in Houston in 2013.

Gophers offense vs. Syracuse defense: RB Mo Ibrahim can put a cherry atop an amazing career; the sixth-year player is less than 60 yards away from setting the program’s career and single-season rushing records. Syracuse’s defense gave up at least 200 rushing yards in four of their five straight losses into late November. … Kaliakmanis threw for a career-high 319 yards and two touchdowns in the 23-16 win over Wisconsin on Nov. 26. The Orange had a top 20 passing defense, but key starters S Ja’Had Carter and CB Duce Chestnut both opted out of the bowl. … Marlowe Wax is a difference maker; the LB leads the team with 89 tackles, six tackles for lost yards, 4 1/2 sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. … QB Tanner Morgan hasn’t played since Nebraska on Nov. 5, but it would be nice for the winningest quarterback in school history to possibly get a cameo in his final collegiate game. Gophers defense vs. Syracuse offense: The Orange lost its most reliable offensive weapon when RB Sean Tucker opted out of the bowl to prepare for the NFL draft. Tucker rushed for 1,060 yards and 11 touchdowns and was second on the team with 36 receptions for 254 yards and two scores. Backup RB LeQuint Allen averaged 6.9 yards per carry on 26 carries in 2022. Minnesota’s rushing defense is 15th in the nation, giving up a paltry 106 per game. … Gophers DC Joe Rossi compared 6-foot-4, 230-pound QB Garrett Shrader to former Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger due to his physical size to withstand hits, his mobility and because of his big arm. Shrader is 25th in the nation with a 154.6 QB rating. … Syracuse QB coach Jason Beck was elevated to OC after Robert Anae left for same job at North Carolina State. Tyler Nubin missed the win over the Badgers with a broken right hand. Head coach P.J. Fleck said Nubin would be available for the bowl game, but the fourth-year senior is still dealing with the injury. Regardless of if Nubin plays Thursday, he said he will return to the U in 2023. Special teams: K Matthew Trickett converted 83 percent of his field goals this season, while ‘Cuse K Andre Szmyt made only 75 percent. K Dragan Kesich leads the nation with touchbacks on 88 percent of his kickoffs this season. KR Quintin Redding is looking to recreate the 92-yard kickoff return against Illinois in October. Pinstripe Bowl Prediction: Syracuse vs. Minnesota to Finish Out the Season in Yankee Stadium (athlonsports.com; Scott)
Two former MAC coaches will lead their Power 5 programs into battle in Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
Dino Babers' Syracuse Orange come into the Pinstripe Bowl with a 7-5 record after starting the season 6-0. That early start had many people around the country tossing Syracuse around as a possible New Year's Six Bowl participant. Sadly for the Orange, five straight losses ended that possibility. They were able to log a win again rival Boston College to end the season.
P.J. Fleck's Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) shot out of the gates with a 4-0 record and had many mentioning them as the favorites to win the Big Ten West. An injury to star running back Mohamed Ibrahim and three subsequent conference losses made that a taller order. Minnesota won four of its last five games, but the loss to Iowa eliminated the Gophers from Big Ten West contention. They finished the regular season with a road win over rival Wisconsin.
Babers and Fleck have some familiarity with each other when both were leading MAC teams earlier in their coaching tenures. Babers was at Bowling Green from 2014-15 before taking over at Syracuse whereas Fleck was leading Western Michigan during that same time before coming to Minneapolis in Dec. 2016. The coaches met twice in conference play when they overlapped, splitting the two meetings.
This will be the sixth head-to-head meeting between Minnesota and Syracuse. The Gophers hold a slim 3-2 edge, but the Orange won the recent encounter, a 21-17 victory in the 2013 Texas Bowl.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) close out the 2022 season on Thursday in a Pinstripe Bowl matchup with the Syracuse Orange (7-5) at Yankee Stadium at 1 p.m. CT.
Can Syracuse score on offense?
The Orange will have a new offensive coordinator for the Pinstripe Bowl. Quarterbacks coach Jason Beck was promoted to the position on Dec. 9 after previous offensive coordinator Robert Anae left to take the same position at NC State. Beck and Anae have been attached at the hip for a decade, with stints together at BYU, Virginia, and Syracuse over the past 10 years.
Beck has been credited with shepherding the development of Syracuse quarterback Garrett Schrader, a former Mississippi State transfer who was instrumental in leading the Orange to a 6-0 start this season. Through the first six games, Schrader was 106-of-152 (69.7%) for 1,434 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions to go along with 300 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. But he struggled in the second half, hampered by injuries. Over the final six-game stretch, during which he was sidelined for a game against Pittsburgh, Schrader was 67-of-114 (58.7%) for 876 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions, along with only 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Syracuse is likely hoping that the month-long layoff between the end of the regular season and the Pinstripe Bowl will provide enough time for Schrader to get at least close to a hundred percent. The Orange offense is at its best when it is able to use the entire field in the passing game. Nine different pass catchers have caught at least one touchdown for Syracuse this season, but their most dangerous weapon is 6’5”, 216-lb. wide-receiver-turned-tight-end Oronde Gadsden II. He is a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses and leads the Orange in receptions (54), receiving yards (891 receiving yards), and receiving touchdowns (6).

Know Your Minnesota Football Foe: Syracuse Orange (247sports.com; Burns)
Before each Minnesota football game, GopherIllustrated will ask five questions of an opposing beat writer. This week, we spoke with Syracuse beat writer Mike McAllister of FanNation to preview the Gophers' Pinstripe Bowl game opponent in the Syracuse Orange.
1) After a 6-0 start to the season, Dino Babers and Syracuse lost five of their last six games. What happened in the first part of the year, that couldn't be replicated in the second half?
MM: There were two big reasons for the significant change in results. First, the schedule got significantly more difficult. In those five games, Syracuse played at Clemson, Notre Dame at home, at rival Pittsburgh, Florida State at home and at Wake Forest. While neither Pitt nor Wake are what they were last year, the other three are legitimate top 20 caliber teams and it was too much over that stretch combined with the second reason. That being injuries. Garrett Shrader suffered an injury that took away his mobility in the first half against Notre Dame (he did not play the second half), caused him to miss the game at Pittsburgh and was significantly limited against Florida State. That combined with injuries to the offensive line, defensive line, linebackers and secondary really hurt the Orange during those five games.
2) What's the injury/transfer/opt-out situation like for Syrcuse on both sides of the ball heading into the bowl game?
MM: Here are starters from the opener out for this game due to injury, transfer or opt-out:

3) What are QB1 Garrett Shrader's biggest strengths and weaknesses, and what's the running game going to look like without Sean Tucker?
MM: Shrader has taken significant strides in the offseason and grown a lot as a quarterback. What makes his dynamic is his mobility and dual threat ability. He can take over a game with his legs and has had plenty of 70+ rushing yard performances with multiple touchdowns during the last two seasons. Last season, accuracy was a big, big weakness along with decision making at times. With that aforementioned growth, that has improved significantly this season. Still, Shrader's arm strength is his biggest weakness. While he can make passes down the field, he lacks that elite zip or power behind his throws that you see in a lot of big time quarterbacks. That is why he can struggle with teams that can play good man coverage.

Which former Syracuse football players are headed to the NFL playoffs?
Kingsley Jonathan is the only SU alumnus who’s clinched a postseason bid (so far) as the Buffalo Bills lead the AFC East with a 12-3 record. Jonathan played 18 snaps and got a tackle in his debut with the Bills during a 35-13 win Saturday against his former team, the Chicago Bears, after being waived halfway through the season.
The Bills are currently in first place in the AFC, where four other teams have clinched playoffs: Kansas City Chiefs (12-3), Cincinnati Bengals (11-4), Baltimore Ravens (10-5) and Los Angeles Chargers (9-6). Seven teams have a chance of taking the conference’s final two spots, including the Jacksonville Jaguars (with Orange alum Andre Cisco) with an AFC South-leading 7-8 record and the long-shot Las Vegas Raiders (with Chandler Jones) at 6-9 in the AFC West.
In the NFC, four teams have clinched playoffs: The Philadelphia Eagles (13-2), Minnesota Vikings (12-3), San Francisco 49ers (11-4) and Dallas Cowboys (11-4). The final three slots are up for grabs by eight teams, including the 7-8 Seattle Seahawks (with injured SU alum Alton Robinson) and the 7-8 Detroit Lions (with former Orange cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu).

North Carolina, to date, has indulged all the same Holiday Bowl festivities that N.C. State did in San Diego at this time last year.
The Tar Heels have seen the whales and dolphins at SeaWorld, visited the famous zoo — the late Louie Anderson once quipped, “It’s like $50 to get in. I said, ‘Lady, we just want to look at the animals” — and toured an active aircraft carrier.
The Wolfpack made it that far. North Carolina should get to do more than merely wander around Petco Park and play in the actual football game there, unlike N.C. State.
It feels like ages in our increasingly post-pandemic world, but it was only a year ago that UCLA bailed on the Holiday Bowl a few hours before the game, leaving the Wolfpack all dressed up at the hotel with nowhere to go but home.
N.C. State’s players took the bowl trophy with them, briefly claimed a 10th win and were left generally unfulfilled by the way circumstances unfolded, especially after UCLA coach Chip Kelly proclaimed, the day before, that “if we have 11, we will play,” even with several key players already ruled out.

Bowl season is in full swing and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is represented by nine programs.
The ACC is tied with the Big Ten for the second-most teams in bowl games. Each is behind the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which leads with 12 teams.
The nine-team mark is an improvement from the six bids earned by the ACC in 2021, which finished 2-4 and didn't send a representative to the College Football Playoff for the first time in its existence.
Through two games, the ACC is 2-0. Louisville defeated Cincinnati 24-7 in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Dec. 17, while Wake Forest beat Missouri 27-17 in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 23.

A star college quarterback reportedly plans on transferring to a prestigious program.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Wake Forest's Sam Hartman intends to enter the transfer portal. Thamel called Notre Dame the "strong favorite" to land the 23-year-old.
Hartman threw 38 touchdowns in his fifth season with the Demon Deacons, giving him an ACC-record 110 passing touchdowns over his college career. Obtaining Hartman would be a massive win for a Notre Dame squad that went 8-4 without much of an aerial attack this season.
"Our god is an awesome god," Notre Dame alum Mike Golic Jr. exclaimed on Twitter.
"If true, it’d be the best use of the portal by a player & the best get by a top program," former Arkansas quarterback Clint Stoerner said. "Sam gets paid, fills a huge need & will have a shot at a title. ND gets top 2022 portal QB, bought a shot at a title & bought themselves a [year] to fix the most embarrassing QB room in CFB."

Peach cobbler and banana pudding: A Touch of Soul
Address: 2409 Milton Ave., Syracuse, NY 13209; (315) 928-6074From Jared Paventi: I should have known better. I got one order of peach cobbler from A Touch of Soul in Solvay, and I knew my wife would claim it. She was kind enough to share a small spoonful of this warm dessert oozing with a cinnamon-infused peach filling and a cinnamon top layer of pie crust. It was amazing and I should have ordered two. My consolation prize was the banana pudding, which was more like a bread pudding.
The fluffy mousse-like dessert hid a cake base and was studded with slices of fresh banana. Had the peach cobbler not been available, this dessert would still make the list.

Made daily in the upstairs kitchen, you plan on dessert at Riley’s, eschewing large entrees or the extra starter to ensure that you’ve left room. Here, we get a flourless chocolate cake that was thick and dense like a fudge. Chocolate and hazelnut are such a natural pairing, and each forkful was spiked with the nutty liqueur, cutting the bitter chocolate of the cake.
