SU football 2023 scholarship roster: How the Orange shakes out by position, year (PS; $; Leiker)

The craziest stretch of the college football calendar — featuring bowl games, signing day, the coaching carousel and the first of two transfer portal windows — is over, coinciding with the official end of the season itself.

It’s time to start looking ahead.

Syracuse football is believed to have 78 of its 85 full-ride scholarship spots filled following Early Signing Day and with the end of the first transfer portal window approaching on Jan. 18.

The Orange added 20 total players. It has lost 10 to the transfer portal, including star defensive backs Duce Chestnut and Ja’Had Carter, and several more players who declared for the NFL draft or aged out of the program.

Syracuse’s oldest players will be playing their sixth season of college ball thanks to redshirts and the added year of eligibility due to Covid.

Here’s a look at SU’s scholarship roster as we know it for the 2023 season.

Jermaine Terry Schedules Syracuse Official Visit (SI; McAllister)

Cal transfer tight end Jermaine Terry has scheduled an official visit to Syracuse, he tells All Syracuse. Terry will get a closer look at the Orange this coming weekend. Terry is listed at 6-4, 255 pounds and has two years of eligibility remaining with his redshirt year still available. He joins transfer quarterback Ty Keyes as visitors this weekend.

Terry is fresh off of a visit to Oregon State. In addition to Syracuse and Oregon State, he also holds offers from Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana and Nevada.

During his career with Cal, Terry started 12 games and recorded eight catches for 52 yards. He has a reputation of being a stellar blocker and an athletic freak who has a lot of potential as a receiving tight end.

As a high school recruit, Terry was one of the most coveted tight end prospects in the 2021 class. He signed with Cal out of Kennedy High School in California over offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Colorado, Florida, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA, Utah, Washington and West Virginia, among others.

Damien Alford Withdraws From Transfer Portal (SI; McAllister)

Just one day after entering the transfer portal, Syracuse starting wide receiver Damien Alford has withdrawn a source confirmed. He is the second Orange player to withdraw after entering, joining defensive back Jeremiah Wilson. Alford had 20 catches for 429 yards and two touchdowns last season.

With Alford’s withdrawal, Syracuse remains at nine players in the portal. They include defensive back Ja’Had Carter, defensive back Duce Chestnut, Dom Foster, defensive lineman Josh Hough, wide receiver Courtney Jackson, defensive lineman Steve Linton, offensive lineman Tyler Magnuson, wide receiver Anthony Queeley and offensive lineman Chad Schuster.

Some of those players have already found new homes. Carter committed to Ohio State, Chestnut committed to LSU, Linton committed to Texas Tech, Schuster committed to Western Michigan, and Courtney Jackson to Arkansas State. The Orange has also added from the transfer portal including offensive lineman Joe More, defensive lineman Braylen Ingraham, punter Jack Stonehouse, defensive back Jayden Bellamy and defensive back Jaeden Gould.

Ohio State Fans Not Happy With Dino Babers Today (thespun.com; Rosvoglou)

Apparently, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers wasn't impressed by the way Ohio State finished this college football season.

Babers ranked Ohio State the lowest out any coach who participated in the final Coaches Poll for this season. He ranked the Buckeyes as the No. 7 team in the country.

For comparison's sake, Kirby Smart had Ohio State ranked fourth.

Ohio State fans are convinced that Babers is mad about losing safety Ja'Had Carter to the Buckeyes.

"When OSU takes your best defensive player….. Sorry Dino," one fan said.

"What the hell was Dino thinking unless he's upset because their best safety is coming to Columbus," another fan wrote.

Albert Breer had a relatable reaction to this news, tweeting, "Lol Dino Babers."

Babers is a respectable coach, there's no doubt about it. However, ranking Ohio State seventh seems a bit harsh.

Congrats Mo!

Maurice Jackson has been named the head coach of Aquinas Li'l Irish Football, the school announced in a press conference on Tuesday.

The former Marshall High School and Syracuse University star becomes the 20th head coach in program history.

Jackson takes over a program that has won 15 Section V titles and a record eight NYSPHSAA championships since the tournament began in 1993.

"I’m extremely excited about taking on this task of leading the most prestigious football program in the state here at Aquinas," Jackson said during the press conference at the Wegman-Napier Center on the Aquinas campus. "It’s an honor to be selected as the 20th head coach of the program."

2022 Syracuse Orange football awards (247sports.com; Finneral)

The 2022 Syracuse football season had no shortage of drama. After all the peaks and valleys, the Orange finished with a 7-6 record and a bowl game appearance for the first time since 2018. Here are some players that stood out for Syracuse this season.

Offensive MVP: Garrett Shrader

It became very apparent early on that the Syracuse offense would be completely reliant on quarterback Garrett Shrader. Playing the most important position on the field, it was not a shock to see Shrader finish as the most valuable offensive player for the Orange.

Shrader’s athleticism was well-known entering the season, having rushed for 781 yards in 2021. The big question was whether he could take a step forward as a passer.

Shrader answered that question with an emphatic yes as he threw for over 200 yards in five of his first six games. He only eclipsed 200 passing yards twice in 2021 after taking over the starting job.

Shrader’s impact on the Syracuse offense was felt in a big way when he was injured in the Clemson game. Without Shrader at 100%, the Syracuse offense was completely depleted and it showed in the form of a five-game losing streak.

With limited mobility, it took away Shrader’s dual-threat nature that was so effective early in the season. Overall, he was the lifeblood of the Syracuse offense. Shrader was the biggest reason for the improved versatility of the offense and that is why he is the offensive MVP.

Bowl Grades For Every Team, Conference: How Did Everyone Do? (CFN; Fiutak)

What grade did each college football team and conference earn this 2022-2023 bowl season? Which leagues and teams did the best job?

– Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

This was the weirdest bowl season ever, and it’s one going to get more interesting going forward with the transfer portal playing a bigger role, NIL money being a factor, and with the expanded College Football Playoff coming in the 2024 season.

What programs showed up for their bowl games and which ones mailed it in?

We assign a grade for each team based on relative performance. Winning the game is all that really matters, but did the team play up to its capabilities, or did it have to push a bit too hard against an inferior opponent? Did the losing team come up with a strong fight, or did it get embarrassed?

These were the final exams. How did everyone do?

ACC Bowl Grades

ACC Bowl Grade: B

ACC Straight Up: 5-4
ACC Against The Spread: 6-3

It took down the games it was supposed, to, and it was competitive in some of the bigger ones, but it didn’t do enough in the one it needed to have – the Orange.

Pitt’s wild comeback in the Tony the Tiger Sun over UCLA – a 37-35 win – was the high point, but Clemson got rolled by Tennessee in the Orange, Florida State was meh in its Cheez-It win over Oklahoma, and North Carolina couldn’t come though against Oregon in the Holiday.

Give the league credit for some splash, though. Duke roasted UCF in the Military, Wake Forest got an SEC win over Missouri in the Gasparilla, and Louisville hit the layup against a depleted Cincinnati in the Fenway.

Clemson Bowl Grade: C-

Capital One Orange Bowl
Prediction: Clemson 34, Tennessee 30
Line: Clemson -6, o/u: 61
Final Score: Tennessee 31, Clemson 14
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

For all the talk about transfers and opt-outs and how Clemson does things, this was a bad, bad performance. Tennessee was missing a slew of key parts – more than Clemson – and it didn’t matter much. The Tiger defense was fine and the offense cranked up yards with QB Cade Klubnik the unquestioned starter, but the results weren’t there. With the way Klubnik played, call this loss a step back to take a big leap forward.

Duke Bowl Grade: A

Military Bowl
Prediction: Duke 30, UCF 20
Line: Duke -3, o/u: 62.5
Final Score: Duke 30, UCF 13
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

So how’s that for a bowl game to close out the season with a ninth win? To be fair, UCF was totally gutted and didn’t play like its normal self, but the Blue Devils showed up with a terrific, tight game with no turnovers, one penalty, and a stunningly easy win.

Florida State Bowl Grade: B

Cheez-It Bowl
Prediction: Florida State 34, Oklahoma 20
Line: Florida State -10.5, o/u: 66
Final Score: Florida State 35, Oklahoma 32
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

It’s not like it was a bad game for the Seminoles – they won – but that wasn’t your normal Oklahoma team on the other side. It should’ve been a whole lot easier to get the win. However, the win accomplished two key things: 1) It jacked up the fan base in a big way for 2023, and 2) Jordan Travis – and his 418-yard day – is going to be a major factor next season. It’s a bowl win, and Florida State showed it’s on the upswing.

Louisville Bowl Grade: A

Wasabi Fenway Bowl
Prediction: Louisville 23, Cincinnati 20
Line: Louisville -2, o/u: 39.5
Final Score: Louisville 24, Cincinnati 7
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

Louisville lost its head coach, it didn’t have a slew of key stars, and it was hardly going to be its normal self out there, but Cincinnati had even more problems. The Cardinal did exactly what they were supposed to, the running game was great, and the defense was fantastic. It was one of the more dominant non-big bowl wins of the season.

North Carolina Bowl Grade: B

San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl
Prediction: Oregon 41, North Carolina 30
Line: Oregon -13, o/u: 76
Final Score: Oregon 28, North Carolina 27
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

The offense didn’t quite work as well as it should’ve, but it was still a good performance in a fun back-and-forth game. The defense couldn’t come up with the stop late in a blast of a fourth quarter, and the O settled for field goals, but that was a good Oregon team on the other side. Let’s put it this way – the Tar Heels were supposed to be blown out, and they easily covered.

NC State Bowl Grade: C

Maryland vs NC State
Prediction: NC State 27, Maryland 20
Line: NC State -2, o/u: 45.5
Final Score: Maryland 16, NC State 12
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

The Wolfpack should’ve been able to pull this off. It was a wildly frustrating game, but the defense did its part to hold the high-powered Terps to just 16 points. However, a slew of Maryland’s top receivers were gone – this wasn’t the same O from the regular season. NC State did nothing on the ground, the offense only managed four field goals, and the team could never create that one big breakthrough moment.

Pitt Bowl Grade: A+

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl
Prediction: UCLA 34, Pitt 20
Line: UCLA -8.5, o/u: 53.5
Final Score: Pitt 37, UCLA 35
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

Wow, wow, wow, wow, WOW. Pitt had no business being in this game. It was missing way too many key guys, UCLA had enough of its normal starters around to be good, and no one would’ve blinked if the team packed it in after a demoralizing pick-six for a 28-14 Bruin lead in the third. But the Panthers kept fighting, kept chipping away, and … it was over. UCLA scored with 40 seconds to go to survive and … nope. PK Ben Sauls became a legend, and Pitt pulled off one of the guttiest wins of the bowl season.

Syracuse Bowl Grade: B-

Pinstripe Bowl
Prediction: Minnesota 27, Syracuse 13
Line: Minnesota -10, o/u: 44.5
Final Score: Minnesota 28, Syracuse 20
What Happened, Player of the Game, Fun Stats, What it Means

This was never supposed to be remotely close. The Orange were never really in it, but they managed to make this a bit interesting – and screw everyone with the wrong side of the spread – late, and they weren’t awful considering how badly they were undermanned. The run defense held up phenomenally well – and the team outgained the Gophers 477 yards to 215 – but one pick six turned into the killer. All things considered, it was a good effort.

Boston College Football Parts Ways with Offensive Coordinator John McNulty (bcinterruption; Flannery)

On Wednesday evening, it was reported by multiple sources that Boston College plans to part ways with offensive coordinator John McNulty.

#NEWS Multiple sources tell @FootballScoop that Boston College and offensive coordinator John McNulty are parting ways: Sources: Boston College, offensive coordinator John McNulty parting ways after 2022 struggles @FootballScoop
— John Brice (@JohnDBrice1) January 12, 2023
McNulty has been ousted from the position after just one season at the helm of the Eagles’ offense. He came to the Heights last offseason from Notre Dame after serving as their tight ends coach for two seasons.

Boston College’s offense had a terribly disappointing season in McNulty’s debut, sporting the worst rushing attack in all of FBS football with only 63 rushing yards per game (131st of 131). Much of that blame was often laid at the feet of the offensive line, as BC entered the season with five brand new starters in the trenches due to the NFL Draft, graduation, or injury. But what ensued from that turnover was worse than anybody could’ve imagined. Patrick Garwo, coming off of a 1,000+ yard season, got stuffed at the line repeatedly, unable to even come close to his previous All-ACC accolade. That facet of their game, above all else, sunk BC’s hopes in 2022.

An additional knock against McNulty’s coaching included the regression on QB Phil Jurkovec. He came into 2022 as a potential NFL draft pick, but ended the season on the bench after multiple terrible performances. From decision-making to pass accuracy, Jurkovec regressed in basially every aspect of his game under McNulty’s leadership. A promising season quickly turned into a spiraling mess, and the Eagles finished 3-9.

Florida State wide receiver enters transfer portal (tomahwaknation.com; Pick & Scribble)

The transfer portal giveth and it taketh.

Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that Florida State wide receiver Malik McClain entered the transfer portal:

Florida State WR Malik McClain has entered the transfer portal. A former four-star WR, McClain caught 17 passes for 206 yards and 3 TDs this year. Malik McClain, Florida State Seminoles, Wide Receiver
— 247Sports Transfer Portal (@247SportsPortal) January 11, 2023
McClain played in all 13 FSU games this season, catching 17 passes for 206 yards (12.1 YPC) and 3 TD.

Although he’s a talented player and it’s frustrating to lose him, the Seminoles are currently over the allotted 85 scholarship threshold, and the receiver room is stacked, especially with a healthy Winston Wright, and 5-star signee Hykeem Williams.

From McClain’s FSU bio:

2021:
Appeared in all 12 games with nine starts…had 16 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns…FSU Offensive Newcomer of the Year…Seminole Scholar…scored first collegiate touchdown on five-yard catch at North Carolina…named ACC Rookie of the Week for his performance in 35-25 win…caught 15-yard touchdown at Boston College that provided game-winning points in 26-23 victory…had 21-yard reception in season opener vs. No. 9 Notre Dame…made season-high three catches for 23 yards vs. Louisville…matched season-high catches total for 23 yards vs. North Carolina State…caught two passes for 18 yards vs. Jacksonville State…had season-long 51-yard reception vs. UMass…made six-yard catch at Wake Forest…had 15-yard reception at Clemson…made two-yard catch vs. Miami…registered 11-yard reception in season finale at Florida.
BEFORE FSU:

ACC football: FSU headlines way-too-early power rankings heading into 2023 (247sports.com; Marsdale)

FSU football concluded its 2022 season on a six-game winning streak, as it defeated Oklahoma 35-32 in the Cheez-It Bowl to finish 10-3 in Year 3 under Mike Norvell. It marked the first 10-win season for the program since 2016. Norvell earned plenty of praise after the game — and the trajectory is without on the upward in Tallahassee, Florida. For that, they headline our way-too-early 2023 ACC power rankings.

"We're getting better, and our objective is every day we go out on that field or in the classroom or whatever we are doing, and we want improvement," Norvell said after the game, via Noles247. "I will put no limits to what we can accomplish as a team. I was disappointed in some of the setbacks that we faced earlier in the season, but these guys never stopped working and never stopped believing. This is a special place. This is a remarkable program to be a part of, and it is not just the things of even the history and the past. It is the people.

"When you get them around, the past players that have come around you and see their support, you see their excitement, you see their joy, we represent them."

Here are the rest of our way-too-early 2023 ACC power rankings:

1. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (10-3, 5-3 ACC)

Not only has Florida State cleaned up in the portal for the 2023 recruiting cycle, but the Seminoles were one of the nation's hottest teams exiting the season and got great news with quarterback Jordan Travis along with top defender Jared Verse announced their respective returns. That gives Florida State a pair of All-American candidates on both sides of the football, not to mention impressive talent elsewhere in the skill spots. The Seminoles are one of the nation's most hyped teams in 2023.

2. CLEMSON TIGERS (11-3, 8-0 ACC)

No longer the likely preseason favorite to win the ACC given the personnel returning for another squad in the league, Dabo Swinney and the Tigers will try and turn back the naysayers who question the roster's holes on defense following heavy NFL departures. Quarterback Cade Klubnik is coming off his first career start and he'll be tasked with being the face of the program alongside running back Will Shipley.

3. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (9-5, 6-2 ACC)

Drake Maye returning in 2023 for his junior season is big. However, the Tar Heels need to do some serious work on defense if they want to go on to bigger and better things come next season. If they do not tighten up on that side of the ball, it could be another season that ends in disappointment, kind of like this past one did after a strong start.

4. NC STATE WOLFPACK (8-5, 4-4 ACC)

NC State lost Devin Leary to transfer, but bring in a quarterback that has done a lot of damage in college football in ex-Virginia star Brennan Armstrong. Armstrong, a 9,000-yard career passer at the collegiate level, is a graduate transfer. Armstrong threw for 2,210 yards and seven touchdowns against 12 interceptions this season for the Cavaliers, who played just 10 games on the schedule. Armstrong took a step back after head coach Bronco Mendenhall retired, which led to offensive coordinator Robert Anae departing for Syracuse.

5. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (9-4, 5-3 ACC)

It was not the season Pitt hoped for after winning the 2021 ACC Championship, but the Panthers were able to win their final four games to finish with eight wins. The regular season finale was a blowout at Miami and the bowl game was an upset of UCLA, as Pittsburgh heads into the offseason with momentum. The Panthers added ex-Notre Dame and Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec out of the transfer portal.

6. DUKE BLUE DEVILS (9-4, 4-4 ACC)

Duke capped off the season on a high note Wednesday evening, cruising to a 30-13 win over the UCF Knights in the Military Bowl at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. The win moved the Blue Devils to 9-4 in their first season head coach Mike Elko, a mark the program had not reached since 2014. Duke quarterback Riley Leonard earned MVP honors after completing 19 of 28 passes for 173 yards and rushing for 63 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He returns, so this program is in good shape.

7. MIAMI HURICANES (5-7, 3-5 ACC)

The Hurricanes struggled on both sides of the ball, failing to reach 20 points on offense for the fourth time this season while allowing at least 40 points in five games in their season finale against Pittsburgh. Pressure will be on Mario Cristobal to fix this in Year 2. Expect the Hurricanes to be a bit better.

8. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (8-5, 3-5 ACC)

Sam Hartman is gone to Notre Dame, as Wake Forest has massive shoes to fill at that position. What looked like a promising season for Wake Forest quickly went down the drain in a sense. The Demon Deacons lost four of their last five games after a 6-1 start. It was not the season Wake Forest was hoping for after a 10-win campaign last fall with plenty of talent returning. A crucial season coming up got a bit more difficult with Hartman's departure.

9. LOUIVILLE CARDINALS (8-5, 4-4 ACC)

Brohm spent six years with Purdue and left a tenure marked by success. He took over the Boilermakers program and immediately produced winning seasons, earning Purdue a measure of respect in the Big Ten. Louisville was in the market for a new coach when Scott Satterfield departed for the Cincinnati opening. How Brohm fares at Louisville is something to watch, but Year 1 and a new roster is a bit of a challenge for some.

10. GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (5-7, 4-4 ACC)

Following Georgia Tech's upset win over North Carolina, interim coach Brent Key continued to establish himself as a viable candidate for the head position with a strong first-half showing against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday. Heading into the matchup as 35.5-point underdogs, the Yellow Jackets took an early 7-0 lead and trailed by just three at the half. Though the Bulldogs scored 37 unanswered points after the break, it was a strong effort. The Yellow Jackets had many under Key, who was named full-time head coach of the program. Key could surprise and get the Yellow Jackets to a bowl game.

11. SYRACUSE ORANGE (7-6, 3-5 ACC)

Things started really good in a make-or-break season for Dino Babers. The Orange won seven in a row and vaulted into the AP Top 25. Things did not go so well after that, as they lost their next five games and were on the ropes at three-win Boston College before completing a comeback to finish the regular season 7-5 prior to the bowl loss against Minnesota. Will that record cut it for Babers next fall?

ACC BREAKDOWN

How Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, ACC coaches voted Clemson football in final USA TODAY poll of 2022 (yahoo.com; Keepfer)

Clemson football wound up ranked No. 12 in the final USA TODAY Sports’ Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, and here’s a closer look at how the Tigers ended up there.

The Tigers, who finished 11-3 after losing to Tennessee 31-14 to Tennessee in the Orange Bowl, received a wide range of votes from the 63 head coaches who participated in the poll, with a high of No. 7 and a low of No. 18.

It marked the 12th consecutive year that Clemson has been ranked in the final coaches poll of the season and the 11th straight year that the Tigers have finished among the top 16.

Not surprisingly, ACC coaches tended to rank Clemson higher than coaches from other conferences, led by Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi, who placed the Tigers at No. 7 along with Chuck Martin of Miami (Ohio).

Louisville’s Scott Satterfield, whose team lost at Clemson 31-16 on Nov. 12, was the lone coach to have Clemson at No. 8 in his final ranking.

Wegman Dairy owner Martin Wegman (left), standing with his son Brendan, has retired after delivering milk for over 40 years. His family ran their milk delivery business in upstate New York for over 125 years. (Katrina Tulloch)

After 4 decades, Marty the Milkman makes his final home delivery: ‘It’s my family’s legacy’ (PS; $; Doran)

Martin Wegman chokes up when he talks about his love for delivering milk to homes in western Onondaga County.

It started more than a century ago, when his family took milk from their own cows, put it in 40-gallon vats and drove a wagon around to customers.

That tradition ended on the last Friday of 2022, when “Marty the Milkman” delivered his last quarts of milk, cartons of eggs and sticks of butter to his customers, some of whom are the children of past customers.

Wegman says he’ll miss it. But he’s trying not to cry over his last, home-delivered milk.

“It’s time to stop,” Wegman, 64, told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard from his Marcellus home. He and his wife, Susan, decided it’s time to start a new chapter. “But it’s hard, because it means a lot to me. It’s my family’s legacy.”

To his customers, Wegman did more than deliver milk and eggs throughout Marcellus, Skaneateles and Onondaga during the past four decades. He shared corny jokes and riddles while re-stocking fridges. He learned their cooking and baking habits, leaving the ricotta with a note that he’d be happy to sample the lasagna or cannoli next time he came by.

Good thing with Jackson. Aquinas has been missing as of late in playoffs. He will get good talent there. I know they don’t give to players to play there. .
