Welcome to National Pie Day!

National Pie Day is a "day to maintain America's pie heritage, pass on the tradition of pie making and promote America's love affair with pie." It is a day to bake and eat pies, try new recipes, and give pies to others. Charlie Papazian, who later went on to found the Great American Beer Festival, started the day in 1975 in his classroom, while teaching in Boulder, Colorado. He chose his birthday, January 23, as the day of celebration. In 1986, the American Pie Council began sponsoring the day, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Crisco. National Pie Day is also celebrated on December 1, but it is unknown why this date was also chosen or who chose it.

Syracuse hires Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher as cornerbacks coach (DO; Alandt)

Syracuse has hired former Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher as its next cornerbacks coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Fisher was with the Cornhuskers as the defensive backs coach for the last five years. The move follows reports surfacing last week that current cornerbacks coach Chip West, who has been with Syracuse since 2020, interviewed with Wake Forest for the same position.

Prior to his time at Nebraska, Fisher was the cornerbacks coach for Central Florida from 2015-16 and was the defensive backs coach from 2016-17. Fisher, a former defensive back for UCF that finished his college career with 130 tackles, four interceptions and 35 pass defenses, was also a defensive quality assistant for the Knights for two years before two seasons as a cornerbacks coach for Southeast Missouri State.

Fisher was a second-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft and played for nine seasons with the St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens. In 2003, Fisher led the league in interception returns for touchdowns and interception return yards. In his first season with the Cornhuskers, he took over for a secondary that had allowed more than 275 passing yards per game and in one season helped Nebraska hold five opponents to fewer than 200 passing yards.

Nine of Fisher’s defensive backs from 2018-22 have signed NFL contracts, including junior college transfer Mike Hughes, who in one season became an All-American and first-round NFL pick. He’ll take over a unit that will be without Garrett Williams (NFL draft) and Duce Chestnut (LSU transfer).

How is Dino Babers Filling the Gaps in His Coaching Staff? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Unsworth)

While Syracuse men’s basketball is riding the ups and downs of its ACC slate, SU football is quietly trying to rebuild its staff and roster after losing key players in the transfer portal and coaches to other universities. The thrill of the almighty dollar has left the Orange without key leaders on both sides of the ball. Tony White and Nick Monroe, gone. Secondary, gutted. Offensive line, without its leader and successful run game coordinator. So the pressure’s on Dino Babers to retool his staff and get his crew back to a bowl.

The seventh-year head man’s latest hire comes from the school where White went, Nebraska.

Pete Thamel
@PeteThamel

Sources: Former Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher has agreed to become the new cornerbacks coach at Syracuse. Fisher is a veteran defensive backs coach, having been at UCF from 2015-17 and Nebraska from 2018-22. He played nine years in the NFL.

Fisher will coach corners, and follows his former Cornhusker Jaedan Gould to the 315. In his three years at UCF, the Knights went from 0-12 to 13-0. In 2016, the secondary only allowed 200 yds per game. He coached both Shaquem Griffin and Mike Hughes, who have both played over five years in the NFL. At Nebraska, Fisher’s secondaries held opponents to 225 yards per game. Current Bengals corner Cam Taylor-Britt (who’s matching up with Stefon Diggs as this article is written) spent four years under Fisher’s tutelage after a fantastic career as a high school quarterback in Alabama, and was a two-time all-Big Ten honoree.

After Nick Monroe made his late move to Minnesota, SU was badly in need of a secondary coach to keep recruits around. Fisher’s track record of producing NFL players and league experience himself are great starting points. Hopefully he can find diamonds in the rough just like Monroe.

Syracuse Tabs Travis Fisher as New Cornerbacks Coach (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football has found a replacement for its coaching staff in the secondary. Former Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher is set to become the new cornerbacks coach with the Orange, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel. Fisher was with the Cornhuskers for the last five seasons.

Prior to his time at Nebraska, Fisher was an assistant coaching cornerbacks or defensive backs at Central Florida from 2015 to 2017. In 2014, he was the cornerbacks coach at Southeast Missouri State. In 2013, Fisher was a defensive quality control assistant at UCF.

Fisher played his college ball at Central Florida and was a standout with the Knights that led to being selected in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. He spent nine seasons in the NFL and led the league in interception returns for touchdowns (two) and interception return yards (205) in 2003.

The move comes in response to Chip West's likely departure to Wake Forest as the Orange undergoes significant change in its coaching staff this offseason. Tony White, Robert Anae, Mike Schmidt and Nick Monroe have also left in addition to West. Rocky Long, Steve Farmer and Travis Fisher have been hired.

2023 Dynasty Rookie Early Look: Sean Tucker, RB Syracuse (dynastyleaguefootball.com; Matson)

Bijan Robinson is the star of this year’s NFL Draft. However, his shine might be taking away the spotlight from some other running back prospects who – if they had the opportunity to be another draft – would be considered top-shelf talents in their own right.

Sean Tucker took the hearts of many dynasty gamers when he for over 1,400 yards during his sophomore season at Syracuse. Since then, it’s been a ride that has been riddled with splash plays and home-run hitters. Now it’s time to see where he will go once he crosses that stage at the NFL Draft.

RECRUITMENT

Tucker wasn’t considered a top-tier prospect in the 2020 recruiting class. 247Sports had him ranked the 58th-best running back and the 27th-best player out of the state of Maryland. He was rated as a three-star prospect coming out of high school. At the National Combine in 2019, he measured at 5-foot-10 and weighed 157 pounds.

He finished his high school career at Calvert Hall College High School which is a private school located in Baltimore, Maryland. In his junior season, he averaged 129.6 rushing yards per game and 7.2 yards per carry. Then in his senior year, he capped off his career by rushing for 1,204 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also played on the other side of the ball at cornerback.

Tucker was also a track star in high school, winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association indoor title for the 55-meter dash two years in a row, and was a champion in the 100-meter and 200-meter as a junior. His personal record in the 55-meter dash clocked in at 6.41 seconds.

COLLEGIATE CAREER

Tucker started his collegiate career on a 1-10 Syracuse team that averaged 265.3 yards in total offense per game. He led the team with 626 rushing yards and four touchdowns while owning a 25.35 percent share of the team’s entire output in 2020. The freshman posted three 100-yard games against Georgia Tech, Liberty, and Notre Dame.

In 2021, during his sophomore season, we saw Tucker take over, rushing for 1,496 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 124.67 yards per game. He posted nine 100-yard performances. We saw his efficiency numbers increase as the sophomore running back averaged 4.11 yards after contact per attempt and 6.1 yards per carry. This ignited his devy value and made him one of the top prospects in college football.

Syracuse football: Steve Farmer hired as offensive line coach (TNIAAM; Wall)

The eventful off-season continues for the Syracuse Orange football program, On Friday, we learned that offensive line coach Mike Schmidt was leaving to join another former Orange assistant with the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Schmidt was hired to become tight ends and tackles coach and run game coordinator on Zach Arnett’s staff. The two worked together at San Diego State from 2011- 2020 and with Arnett taking over after Mike Leach’s passing, they will reunite in Starkville.

This news certainly didn’t take Dino Babers by surprise because shortly after the Schmidt news was announced, Syracuse shared that Steve Farmer would be taking over as offensive line coach.

Farmer has over 20 years of experience and joins Syracuse from Tulsa. Prior to that he had been with Matt Wells at Texas Tech and Utah State.

You’ll note that Syracuse’s announcement talks about Farmer’s contribution to passing offenses which could give us a bit more insight into new offensive coordinator Jason Beck’s plans for 2023. The Orange did throw the ball 51 times in that game and maybe the program is going to take advantage of the confines of the JMA Wireless Dome and throw more.

“I’m thrilled to join Syracuse University and Coach Babers,” Farmer said. “I’m excited about the direction of the program, and this offense under Coach Beck. I can’t wait to get to work with these young men.”
With Farmer on staff, Syracuse still has two open assistant coaching spots so we’ll keep an eye out for the next hiring announcements.

2025 DL Hayden Lowe 'honored' to receive Syracuse offer - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

2025 Oaks Christian (Calif.) ATH Hayden Lowe was busy last week. In the span of three days, Lowe picked up three high-major offers from Texas, Arizona State and Syracuse. The Orange offer, in particular, caught his attention.

“Syracuse has always been on my bucket list because my Mom loves that school,” Lowe said on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast. “It has great academic properties to it that I can utilize, and something that will be good for my future. I’m really blessed and honored to call that one of my offers.”

Speaking of offers, his sheet also includes Washington, Pitt, Utah, Michigan, Boston College, Oregon State and Arizona, among others. Lowe and I chatted about lots of other topics, including which schools are recruiting him hardest at the moment, if he has any favorites so far, what he’s like away from the football field, and what he’s looking for in a college. Lowe holds a 3.7 GPA, and, not surprisingly, academics places high on his list.

Blessed to announce that I have received an offer from Syracuse University. @BrownKai @Malikcyphers @coachC @G_Town93 @GregBiggins @WRCoachmj pic.twitter.com/GKYYVEWw4P
— Hayden Lowe (@Hayden_lowe323) January 18, 2023

Lowe plays several different positions for Oaks Christian—tight end, wide receiver, linebacker and defensive lineman. Syracuse wide receivers coach Mike Johnson, who offered Lowe, offered him as a defensive player. At 6’3″, 230 pounds, most schools are recruiting him as a defensive lineman. “I love to get after the quarterback,” Lowe said. The stats bear that out. Though he appeared in just three games with Oaks Christian this past season, which was cut short due to injury, he finished with 16 tackles, 8 TFL and 3 sacks.

FSU football: 2023 transfer class poised to make biggest impact yet (chopchat.com; Hunt)

FSU football has become known as Transfer Portal U due to its success with transfer portal players in the Mike Norvell era. Norvell and the staff have signed double-digit players from the transfer portal in every recruiting class since arriving in December 2020.

Pundits and rival fans would joke about Florida State’s lower high school rankings in those seasons, but failing to understand players from the portal would help the Noles turn things around much quicker than waiting on high school players to develop.

The key to FSU’s success in the portal has been unbelievable evaluations, both physical and cultural fit. It’s why you’ve seen players like Fabien Lovett, Jermaine Johnson, Keir Thomas, Dillan Gibbons, and Jammie Robinson emerge as team leaders in their time in Tallahassee.

The transfer portal classes have gradually gotten better in every recruiting class. The 2020 class produced two All-ACC players.

The 2021 class produced four All-ACC players, including the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Jermaine Johnson, and the 2022 class had six All-ACC performers.

The latter had three players that would have likely been starters, and possible All-ACC selections had they not missed the season due to injury.

As great as the past few classes have been, it’s the 2023 transfer class that’s poised to make the greatest impact.

Way-too-early Power 5 conference championship game predictions for 2023 (saturdaydownsouth.com; Hickey)

Already wondering who will play in next year’s college football conference championship games?

Good. We’ve got you covered.

Until the transfer portal re-opens in May, we have a good idea of who every contender will have back next season. NFL Draft declarations have been made. The initial postseason wave of transfers is complete.

There will be some talented incoming freshmen signing in February, and another round of transfers from May 1-15. But unless something groundbreaking happens in those windows, the favorites are pretty well established.

There will be a significant adjustment in 2 conferences next season. Both the ACC and Pac-12 are doing away with divisional champions. In each conference, the 2 teams with the best records will meet for the title. The Big Ten and SEC, on the other hand, will continue with their East vs. West arrangements until each conference expands to 16 teams.

Here is who each of our columnists — Saturday Road’s Brett Friedlander, Saturday Tradition’s Alex Hickey, Saturday Out West’s Jon Gold and Saturday Down South’s Connor O’Gara and — expects to see in next year’s conference championship games. (We didn’t include the Big 12 because that league is adding 4 teams and won’t release its 2023 schedule until later in January.)

ACC: Clemson vs. Florida State

Clemson and Florida State are the clear-cut favorites in the ACC. There are others that could challenge, of course. But given Clemson’s hiring of Garrett Riley as OC to work with quarterback Cade Klubnik and the return of Florida State stars Jordan Travis, Jared Verse and others — along with the addition of Fentrell Cypress — the gap between the Tigers, Noles and the rest of the conference (at least at this point) seems pretty large.

In previous years, those 2 teams would have had to battle it out for the Atlantic Division title. Only one could have made the conference title game. But with the ACC doing away with divisions, it is now possible for them to meet again in Charlotte in the ACC Championship. (Clemson and FSU are permanent partners, by the way, in the ACC’s new 3-5-5 scheduling model.)

Other than those 2, the next most likely candidates are Drake Maye and the Tar Heels — provided they can play any defense at all — and Pitt because of Pat Narduzzi.

— Brett Friedlander, ACC columnist for Saturday Road

B1G: Michigan vs. Wisconsin

It’s the battle of which state should have possession of the Upper Peninsula, though the stakes will only be the Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff berth.

On paper, Michigan appears to be the most experienced national championship contender in the country next season. Led by running back Blake Corum, multiple draft-eligible Wolverines announced their return to Ann Arbor. JJ McCarthy didn’t have a draft decision to make, yet, but he’s also back to lead an offense that scored 566 points — the 3rd-highest total in program history and most since 1904.

There is a potential complication, however.

Ohio State and Penn State will be potential Playoff contenders next season. It’s possible, though unlikely, that all 3 teams could finish 11-1 with Michigan beating Penn State, Penn State beating Ohio State, and Ohio State beating Michigan. In that scenario, the division champ could be determined by the Big Ten’s 8th tiebreaker: a random draw.

Really, that’s a thing. And it could come into play next season.

As for the West, Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell looks poised to accomplish the same feat as USC’s Lincoln Riley and TCU’s Sonny Dykes in 2022: Get his team to the conference championship game in his first season.

Led by new offensive coordinator Phil Longo and SMU transfer quarterback Tanner Mordecai, these will be unlike any Badgers you’ve ever seen. And though the B1G West is home to several of the nation’s best defenses, not many of them are accustomed to facing the up-tempo attack Wisconsin will feature next season.

REPORT: A&M LB Coach Tyler Santucci targeted for a DC role in the ACC (goodbullhunting.com; Beherns)

We already knew the Aggies were in the market for a new RB coach, with the team not renewing the contract of Tommie Robinson. But it appears they may be hiring a new position coach on the other side of the ball as well, as ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that A&M Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebacker Coach Tyler Santucci is being targeted as the new defensive coordinator for the Duke Blue Devils.

Sources: Duke is targeting Texas A&M assistant Tyler Santucci to be the school’s next defensive coordinator. He’d replace Robb Smith, who returned to his family’s home in MInnesota to be closer to them.
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) January 21, 2023

The head coach at Duke is of course former A&M DC Mike Elko. Santucci worked with Elko at A&M, Notre Dame and Wake Forest, so to say the two are familiar with each other is an understatement. Duke is in the market for a DC after Robb Smith is stepping down from the role after one season, reportedly to be closer to his family in Minnesota.

Santucci has been a highly-regarded assistant over the past few seasons, which is part of why he was given a raise and a Co-DC title one year ago in order to retain him following the departure of Elko to Duke. However, the Aggies’ recent recruiting struggles at linebacker may have many A&M fans welcoming his departure. For two years in a row, the Aggies secured a verbal commitment from the nation’s top linebacker only to see them decommit and end up signing with a rival school (Harold Perkins to LSU in 2022, Anthony Hill to Texas in 2023). In addition, the Aggies saw three linebackers hit the transfer portal in Andre White, Tarian Lee and Ish Harris, and have failed to bring in any portal linebackers of their own, despite reportedly heavy pursuit of guys like Mason Cobb (Oklahoma State to USC), Omar Speights (Oregon State to LSU) and Monty Montgomery (Louisville to Ole Miss).
