Welcome to Army Day!

Army Day honors those in the United States Army. It was created as a nationwide observance to draw attention to national defense, to acquaint the public with the Army's activities, and to highlight the need for military preparedness. Defense Test Day was held in 1924 and 1925. Congress did away with it and the Military Order of the World War under the direction of Colonel Thatcher Luquer established Army Day, which was first held on May 1, 1928. That date was chosen to try to overshadow the celebration of International Workers' Day by Communists. But, the following year it began being celebrated on April 6, on the anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I. On April 4, 1936, Franklin Roosevelt issued a proclamation for the day saying it should be acknowledged by Congress and be observed nationwide on April 6. Accordingly, Congress passed Resolution 5-75 on March 1, 1937, officially establishing Army Day. The day was last observed nationally on April 6, 1949. It was then replaced by Armed Forces Day. That new holiday did away with officially celebrating days dedicated to the Army, Navy, and Air Force, although Army Day continued to be observed unofficially.

Syracuse football: defense dominating in spring practice (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

If there’s one thing to take away from the first half of Syracuse Orange spring football camp, it’s that one side of the ball looks significantly better than the other.

The defense has responded well under the leadership of new coordinator Rocky Long, with many players praising his knowledge and coaching style. Meanwhile, the offense (albeit without Garrett Shrader) has looked less than impressive so far, with several areas showing major red flags.

It’s a glaring contrast between the two units, but not one that can’t be explained.

The defense has some new pieces in key roles, with younger guys suddenly being elevated to veteran status now that Mikel Jones, Garrett Williams, and others have moved on. However, the transfers on this side of the ball have seamlessly found their groove with their new teammates. As multiple players have mentioned, having the “Godfather” of the 3-3-5 defense himself as the new DC has made it a smooth process.

“Our whole defensive back room are pretty fresh,” Alijah Clark said last week. “We’re young, but I feel as though we can play with anybody.”

Class of 2024 Michigan City (IN) High running back Jaden Hart is one of the top backs in the Midwest in his cycle. The 5-10, 180 pounder holds offers from Appalachian State, Boston College, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Syracuse and more. He spent Monday on SU's campus to get a closer look at the Orange.

"The visit went great," Hart said. "I got to tour the facilities and drop in on the team workouts. I saw the full campus and saw the famous Dome that the team plays in. The best part of the trip was probably meeting coach Babers and having a great conversation with him."

That discussion with Dino Babers allowed Hart to get to know coach on a more personal level.

"It was great," Hart said. "He's a very down to earth and straightforward guy. We talked about everything, really. The direction of the program, and just great conversations."

The Michigan City High standout was also impressed by the historic nature of Syracuse's campus and facilities.

Syracuse offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron is watched closely by a coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars at SU's Pro Day on March 20. Bergeron is a projected second-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

Todd McShay says Matthew Bergeron will be a second-rounder in NFL Draft (PS; Leiker)

Speaking to a Zoom call of reporters Wednesday, ESPN’s Todd McShay answered a variety of questions about the upcoming NFL Draft.

In one answer about offensive tackles, the draft analyst briefly mentioned Syracuse football’s Matthew Bergeron, saying he expects him to be a second-round selection.

That’s where Bergeron has landed in pretty much every mock draft this offseason.

McShay’s most recent mock draft of the first and second rounds has Bergeron going No. 60 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals.

He wrote that it would make sense for the Bengals to pick up more protection for quarterback Joe Burrow on Day 2, and that Bergeron “is quick and smooth getting set but still has some inconsistent footwork.”

Syracuse football: OG Chris Bleich dealing with undisclosed injury (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

It wouldn’t be Syracuse Orange football without the occasional injury report.

6th-year Offensive Linesman Chris Bleich has been in and out of spring practice recently, and frankly, it seems like a strange case of mishandling an injury situation.

Bleich was a scratch from last Tuesday (March 28) after wearing a larger-than-normal knee brace the week prior. However, he returned to full-contact drills on Thursday, taking part in 1-on-1 matchups with members of the D-Line. From what I could tell, he wasn’t wearing anything different than the rest of the O-Line, nor was he limited in any facet that reporters could see.

So it was a bit of a shock when he appeared yesterday with both of his knees wrapped, observing and speaking to his teammates but not participating in any contact drills.

I asked Head Coach Dino Babers if Bleich was doing alright, and this was his response:

“He better be. We need to get him back out there. There’s some guys on the side who need to be on the football field, he’s one of them. He’s gonna be one of our better players.”

That pretty heavily implies that there is an issue, and Dino sounded a little aggravated that it was even brought up.

Can I make Syracuse a FOOTBALL School? (youtube; video; Always Vocal)

Syracuse has been prominently known to be a basketball school ever since they hired Jim Boeheim. With one national championship in 2003, led by true freshman Carmelo Anthony. Their football program has been stuck in limbo as they have yet to win an ACC title since relocating to the conference from the Big East. Today, Syracuse has hired Jim Boeheim Jr. who tries to bring his dad's winning pedigree to the football team.

Episode 277: ACC Spring Ball Updates - FSU Seminoles w/ EJ Manuel

VIDEO: Coach Key Spring Practice Press Conference (ramblinwreck.com; video)

Head coach Brent Key meets with media following Georgia Tech's ninth practice of the spring

Malik Mustapha Says This Year will Be Different (lastwordonsports.com; Siracusa)

It doesn’t take too much effort to go through game films from last year and find Wake Forest defensive backs getting beat over the top. It didn’t happen with high frequency in each game. But check out games five through 12 and it is there, at least once a game. Sometimes it was for big yardage. Other times it actually led directly to points. It was enough that in his post-game interview after the regular season finale at Duke, head coach Dave Clawson brought it up as a specific concern. Fixing the Wake Forest defensive secondary was bound to be a priority. Defensive back Malik Mustapha says this year will be different.

Change Is In The Air

Changes are never easy in the college football world, but they were going to be inevitable for the Demon Deacons. When the head coach expresses frustration over a specific part of the game, that part has to have changes made.

Gavin Holmes and J.J. Roberts hit the transfer portal at the end of last season. No one is going to call them out individually or place specific blame on them. But it is part of the process of making changes in the secondary.

Clawson also brought in cornerback coach Chip West. There was no specific coach for the position last season. West has a coaching path with Clawson, defensive coordinator Brad Lambert, and safeties coach James Adams. West and Adams were at Charlotte together.

The Pac-12, ACC should revisit merger, alliance to keep up with SEC, Big Ten (superwestsports; Kunnath)

The college athletics landscape has become brutally clear entering 2024.

With Oklahoma and Texas off to the SEC, USC and UCLA headed to the Big Ten and long-term contracts secured with ESPN/ABC and CBS/FOX/NBC respectively, both conferences remain locked in as the powerhouses in college sports for the near future.

The Big 12 has solidified its long-term future at a tier just below the SEC and Big Ten with its ESPN/FOX deal. Although it doesn’t hold any traditional bluebloods as it did before, with TCU fresh off a college football national title appearance and Baylor/Kansas being recent college basketball national champions,

The ACC holds a solid footprint themselves with their relative strength in basketball and decent success in college football with Clemson and Florida State. They are in no danger, but do lack the football depth that’s needed to give the conference major contract power.

And then there’s the Pac-12, the Squidward of Power 5.

It’s a conference in danger of complete dissolution without USC and UCLA to capture the Los Angeles market. Oregon and Washington are football powerhouses, Utah is on the rise, Arizona remains top dog at basketball, Cal still gets solid TV numbers because of the Bay Area, but they are simply not capturing the ratings on their own to justify a large media package at this time.

The rumors continue to flutter out. Turner and CBS are out. Amazon, who the Pac-12 would want to hold half their inventory, might only be interested in providing one game a week. Facing orders from the Mouse to cut costs after some bad financial contracts, ESPN is lowballing the Pac-12 for After Dark games.

In worst case scenarios, the next Pac-12 TV contract could fall as far as mid-major levels, leaving prominent conference members looking for safer harbors. Oregon and Washington will be looking for the first life raft as soon as they can. (Ohio State just cancelled a home-and-home with Washington; you’d have to guess the precarious state of the conference has something to do with it.) The Four Corners of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will continue to be courted by Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark.

Wisconsin Badgers Offer Former 2021 All-ACC Transfer Josh DeBerry (wisportsheroics.com; Guerrera)

The Wisconsin Badgers football team has started spring practices with the transfer portal still on their mind. After consideration and recruiting, Wisconsin offered former All-ACC Second Team defensive back Josh DeBerry a scholarship. DeBerry left Boston College for the transfer portal on March 23rd with hopes of finding better opportunities elsewhere.

Wisconsin Badgers Offer Transfer Defensive Back Josh DeBerry

Josh DeBerry is a former four-year participant for the Boston College Eagles and a three-year starter. DeBerry has spent the last three seasons as the primary nickel back for the Eagles. This past season, the talented defensive back started all ten games he played in, recording 50 total tackles and an interception. DeBerry also recorded 14 solo tackles in the wins over NC State and Louisville.

Why Clemson football's Andrew Mukuba says he's having his best spring practice yet (greenvilleonline.com; Long)

Andrew Mukuba's sophomore season in 2022 was far from what he expected. The Clemson defensive back was fresh off an outstanding freshman campaign in which he was named a freshman All-American and ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. He followed it up with an injury-filled, lackluster season in which he also moved to cornerback.

Mukuba had one of the lowest pass coverage grades among ACC defensive backs last season, according to Pro Football Focus. He played in 12 of Clemson's 14 games while dealing with multiple injuries, including a dislocated elbow and a sprained MCL.

The injuries were a big factor in Mukuba's sophomore slump. He said he was tentative and unable to "play free" while worrying about worsening the pain through which he was playing.

"I think he lacked a little bit of confidence last year," safeties coach Mickey Conn said Friday. "He had a dislocated elbow, and a hurt ankle and a knee. With the kind of speed and the skill that he plays with, it's nice when you can use all your limbs."

Conn added Mukuba was thrust into a leadership role as a young player. As a freshman, Mukuba had veteran safety Nolan Turner to look up to and learn from while making the transition from high school to college. Turner graduated, and a sophomore Mukuba was a young starter forced to mature quickly.

"He had to take on more of a leadership role, and it was just a little bit too much," Conn said. "We've all got to remember he was still a young player last year, still learning technique and that sort of thing."

Micron jobs in Central NY: New classes you can take this year to help you land one (PS; Moriarty)

Like working with your hands? Enjoy figuring out how things work? But math isn’t necessarily your strong point?

You could be just the fit for one of the 1,000 technicians Micron Technology will need on Day One at the mammoth semiconductor fabrication plant it plans to build in Clay.

And Onondaga Community College plans to offer a new program this fall that could help you land one of those jobs.

The New York Department of Education has given OCC the green light to offer a two-year associate degree and a one-year certificate in electromechanical technology.

Both the associate degree and the certificate program were created based on what Micron says it needs: technicians who can operate and maintain the highly robotic machines that will produce microscopic-size computer chips in large quantities.

“There’s an opportunity here that we all want to rise to,” said OCC President Warren Hilton.

Micron has not said how much technician jobs in Clay will pay, stating only that salaries at the plant will average $100,000 a year. Industry experts say those with four-year or graduate degrees in engineering and other fields could earn substantially more than the average, while those with less than four-year degrees will see starting wages in the $60,000 to $80,000 range.

If fully built out, the plant would be the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the nation. Boise, Idaho-based Micron said the plant will cost up to $100 billion to build and create up to 9,000 Micron jobs, plus more than 40,000 jobs at related supply chain employers, over 20 years.

Syracuse University graduate student workers overwhelmingly vote to form union (PS; Newcomb)

Syracuse University graduate student workers voted to unionize by a decisive majority of 728-36 on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

As a result, 1,124 graduate students will form Syracuse Graduate Employees United and will join the Service Employees International Union.

Students will now begin to elect a bargaining committee, which will listen to union members’ needs and work with lawyers to write a contract before negotiations begin with the university.

“The decision to unionize is a historic thing. It goes back to grad students trying to unionize on this campus since the 1970s,” said Sadie Novak, a chemistry PhD.

“But for this campaign, it has been a culmination of grad students across campus facing issues, trying to pay rent, making decisions between going to the doctor or putting groceries on the table,” she said.

Students who voted said an increase in pay for teaching assistants, increased training, and stronger healthcare benefits are at the forefront of their desires when bargaining begins. While students only get paid for 20 hours of work a week, some have reported working double that.

“Many, many students, myself included when I was a TA last year, definitely end up working over 20 hours,” said Amanda Beavan, a master’s student in geography and public administration. “And it becomes really hard to balance our coursework, our teacher responsibilities, and our own research and just living a life. It really burns you out very quickly.”

“This is an important process for all parties and we will negotiate in the spirit of partnership and respect that have been the hallmarks of our labor-management relationships to date,” said Gretchen Ritter, university Provost, in a written statement.
