Welcome to VCR Day!

VCR Day is a day to celebrate the videocassette recorder. Over time, VCR's have been used to play back home movies and commercially made films and programs, as well as to record programming off of television. Prototypes and early versions of the VCR were made in the 1950's, but they cost thousands of dollars and were only used at large television networks. The Telcan, made it England in 1962, was the first home VCR, which cost what would be the equivalent of over $1,600 in 2014 US currency. It could only record for 20 minutes at a time and was exclusively in black and white. Other various VCR's competed for the market for the rest of the 1960's and into the 1970's. In 1972, commercial films were available to play on VCR's for the first time, and by the mid 1970's VCR's began having mass market appeal. At this time there were a few incompatible types of tape cassettes that were competing for the market share, and eventually the two main types to emerge were Sony's Betamax, sometimes just known as Beta, and JVC's VHS, which stands for Video Home System. This competition was known as a "format war". Eventually VHS won out, mainly because of their longer recording time. VHS was the preferred way to play and record video until shortly after 2000, when DVD's overtook the market and VCR's ended up in basements, attics, and yard sales.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/david-mcmorris-discusses-syracuse-commitment (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football landed a commitment from Washington (DC) Gonzaga defensive lineman David McMorris on Tuesday. He picked the Orange over offers from Boston College, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia and several others.

"One of the main reasons is I really loved the defensive scheme," McMorris said. "Also, I really just love the coaching staff. They're really good people on top of being really good coaches."

There was not a specific moment during this past weekend's official visit that clinched it for McMorris. Rather, it was the totality of his recruitment combined with the visit overall. After the visit was over, he went back home, discussed things with his family and made the decision.

The next step was calling defensive line coach Chris Achuff to inform him he was ready to commit.

"The first coach I called was coach Achuff," McMorris said. "He was super excited. He was yelling over the phone and was just really pumped."

Syracuse football lands prediction for 2024 QB/athlete set to officially visit (itlh; Adler)

Andy Bass, a talented quarterback/athlete in the 2024 class, says on Twitter that he will take an official visit to Syracuse football from June 9 to June 11.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Bass is a standout for Heritage Hall, a prep school located in Oklahoma City.

He said via Twitter on May 31 that he had picked up a scholarship offer from the Orange. When I penned this column, per recruiting services, Bass had amassed 14 offers, from Syracuse football, Air Force, Army, UConn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Kent State, Navy, New Mexico State, North Texas, Penn, UNLV and Yale.

I will be taking an official visit to Syracuse from June 9-11!
— Andy Bass (@theandybass) June 3, 2023

At the time of this writing, one prediction had been logged in the Orange’s direction for Bass on . That’s encouraging, although it doesn’t in any way guarantee that Bass is going to ultimately commit to the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse football will soon welcome quarterback/athlete Andy Bass on an official visit.

If you’d like to see some of Bass’ junior-season statistics for Heritage Hall, they can be found on the MaxPreps Web site. In the 2022 campaign, the Chargers went an impressive 13-1 overall, winning the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (“OSSAA”) Class 3A state title.

Very excited to earn my 12th D1 offer from Syracuse! @CoachM_Harris @Coach_Beck7 @CuseFootball pic.twitter.com/5xgx1WSlks
— Andy Bass (@theandybass) May 31, 2023

In the championship game, Heritage Hall defeated the Metro Christian Academy out of Tulsa, Okla., by a final count of 72-56. Bass threw for 105 yards and a touchdown, while also producing 256 yards and two TDs on the ground.

For all of 2022, per MaxPreps, Bass tallied 2,833 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while completing 62.7 percent of his pass attempts. He also carried the ball 125 times for 970 rushing yards and 17 scores on the ground.

But, wait. There’s more. This Syracuse football recruit also had 20 punts for 680 yards. If that wasn’t enough, Bass is also a state champion in track and field.

According to an article from recruiting analyst Charles Kang of The Juice Online, Bass’ primary recruiter is ‘Cuse offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jason Beck. Bass says that he’s excited about his upcoming official visit to the Hill, including “seeing the campus as well as the facilities, and meeting the rest of the coaching staff.”

Also on June 9, the Orange will welcome 2024 four-star wide receiver Jason Robinson to Central New York on an official visit. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Robinson, offered by the ‘Cuse this past February, is a junior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, Calif.

Syracuse Football: 3-star OL has ‘Cuse in top 6, will visit; 3-star DL to visit (itlh; Adler)

A three-star offensive lineman and a three-star defensive lineman in the 2024 class are planning to visit Syracuse football, according to media reports.

Willie Goodacre, a 2024 three-star offensive tackle, said via Twitter that his top six consists of the Orange, Arizona State, Tulane, Houston, Kansas and California. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Goodacre is a junior at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas.

Per articles from recruiting analyst Charles Kang of The Juice Online and SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister, Goodacre will take an official visit to Syracuse football during the weekend of June 16.

Meanwhile, Kang reports that 2024 three-star defensive tackle Jowhar Franklin Jr. plans to take a visit to the ‘Cuse at some point in June.

A few days ago, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound Franklin disclosed on Twitter a top three of Clemson, Ohio State and Tennessee, but reports suggest that his recruitment remains open. Franklin has most recently attended the John Curtis Christian School in River Ridge, La.

Matthew Bergeron officially inks rookie deal with Atlanta Falcons estimated at nearly $9 million (PS; Leiker)

Former Syracuse football offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron officially inked his rookie NFL contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday, the team announced.

The deal is estimated at a total $8.97 million over four years with a signing bonus of $3.53 million according to OverTheCap.com. He’ll carry a cap hit of $1.63 million in his first season.

Bergeron was selected No. 38 overall by Atlanta in the 2023 NFL Draft. He was the first of two SU players to be drafted and the highest drafted out of the program since Justin Pugh (No. 13) in 2013.

The Falcons traded two picks to the Indianapolis Colts to be able to draft Bergeron where they did.

Though Bergeron played left tackle at Syracuse, he’s expected to move to left guard in the pros. He took minimal snaps at the position during prep for the Senior Bowl earlier this year but otherwise has not seen game action at it.

Despite that, Bergeron has a shot at starting for Atlanta at the position as a rookie. The Falcons returned all of their starting O-line except for left guard.

He will compete with Matt Hennessy, a fourth-year pro who filled in at the position at the end of the 2022 season.

Former Syracuse receiver Marvin Harrison is on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame for a sixth straight year.

Harrison on College Football Hall of Fame ballot for 6th time (PS; Leiker)

For the sixth consecutive year, former Syracuse football wide receiver and kick returner Marvin Harrison’s name is on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

The 2024 ballot, which consists of 78 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, as well as more from the divisional ranks, was released Monday by the National Football Foundation.

Other notable names on the ballot include Colorado running back Eric Bieniemy, Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and California running back Marshawn Lynch.

Harrison is the only former Orange on this year’s ballot.

The past three years he had been joined by SU defensive end Dwight Freeney, who was voted into the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class. Freeney, the 10th SU player to be selected to the hall, will be officially inducted Dec. 5.

Harrison played at Syracuse from 1991-95. He redshirted his freshman year and did not make the starting lineup until his third season with the team (’93) when he had 41 receptions for 813 yards and seven touchdowns.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #88, TE Steven Mahar, Jr. (TNIAAM; Wall)

It’s time to start preparing for the upcoming Syracuse Orange football season. We’re going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get ready for a critical season for the Orange.

Up next is...

Name: Steven Mahar Jr.

Position: Tight end

Year: Sophomore

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 232 lbs.

Hometown: Rochester, N.Y.

High School: Aquinas Institute

2022 stats: Played in nine games last season, mostly on special teams.

2023 projections: It’s unclear if Jason Beck plans to use the tight ends in the passing game this fall, so everything here is just a guess. Mahar’s part of a group of players who seem to offer more as receivers than starter Max Mang. Will we see Mahar and others in red zone/short yardage sets?

How’d he get here?: Offers from Boston College, Indiana, Iowa State, Pitt, Rutgers and some others. He opted to remain close to home.

Clemson football recruiting: Five-star WR Bryant Wesco latest in a scorching run of commitments for Tigers (cbssports.com; Straka)

Clemson secured a commitment from five-star wide receiver and top-10 overall recruit Bryant Wesco on Tuesday. The latest Clemson pledge continues a recruiting hot streak for coach Dabo Swinney's staff over the last 48 hours. Sammy Brown -- the top-ranked LB in the nation for the 2024 cycle -- committed to Clemson Monday evening. Four-star wide receiver TJ Moore followed suit Tuesday morning.

Ranked by 247Sports as a five-star prospect and top recruit in Texas for the 2024 cycle, Wesco chose Clemson after also giving consideration to LSU, Oklahoma, TCU and USC, among other offers.

" love everything [about Clemson]," Wesco told 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong. "The highlight of the visit for me was getting to spend time with the players and staff, playing games with all of them, and getting to know them."

Commitments from Brown and Moore boosted Clemson up to No. 10 in 247Sports' team recruiting rankings for the 2024 cycle, one spot ahead of in-state rival South Carolina. With Wesco's commitment, the Tigers are now up to No. 8, jumping ahead of Tennessee and ACC-rival Florida State.

https://www.si.com/college/georgiat...ia-techs-secondary-as-9th-best-in-the-country (SI; Caudell)

I think that Georgia Tech is going to have one of the ACC's best defensive back groups in 2023 and I am not alone in that. Lindy's Sports ranked the Yellow Jackets' secondary as not only one of the best in the ACC but one of the best in the country.

In their National College Football preview, Lindy's ranked the top ten defensive back units in the country and Georgia Tech came in at No. 9.

Here is what they had to say about the Yellow Jackets' secondary this season:

"The Yellow Jackets have a lot of weaknesses, but the secondary is not one of them. LaMiles Brooks helps create a dependable back line of defense that gives Tech a fighting chance this season. Georgia Tech frustrated and contained Drake Maye and UNC and put the clamps on some talented receivers."

I think Brooks has a chance to be the first Yellow Jacket selected in the first round since 2010.

Which ACC games did SaturdayBlitz pick for "most underrated" games of the week? Just two...

College Football 2023: Each Week’s Most Underrated Game

College football fans are all looking forward to huge matchups like Texas/Alabama and Ohio State/Notre Dame, but what games are flying under the radar?

Week 1, Thursday: NC State @ UConn

Listen, go ahead and call me crazy for choosing this game over Nebraska/Minnesota. But after last year, Jim Mora’s UConn Huskies are starting to show they aren’t the pushovers they used to be. The Huskies won six games last year, which doesn’t sound impressive until you realize they only won seven from 2017-2021. They also made their first college football bowl game since 2015.
Timing is very important here. NC State is coming off a disappointing season in which many thought they could win the ACC, but instead went 8-5. They lost Devin Leary, one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the nation, but replaced him with experienced former Virginia starter Brennan Armstrong who will be making his Wolfpack debut. Even better for timing? The following week, the Wolfpack host Notre Dame the following week. Looking past UConn might not bode well for a team that struggled in its season opener last year.

Week 6: Syracuse @ North Carolina

In a conference that already has so much parody in the middle that just eliminated divisions, this game could be the difference between a third-place conference finish and an 11th-place conference finish. Seriously.
These college football teams haven’t met since 2020. Syracuse should be able to move the ball well on the Tar Heel defense, but stopping Drake Maye is key. Maye can throw all over anyone, but the Syracuse defense was actually pretty decent last year, especially early in the season before declining in late October. North Carolina has a considerably more difficult schedule as a whole prior to this, so the Heels could come in limping. Syracuse doesn’t have a picnic either, as they face Clemson the week before.

Will FSU Dethrone Clemson For The ACC Title In 2023? (youtube; podcast; JT Sports)

Clemson Football has been the top dog in the ACC for well over a decade. With two national championships and eight ACC titles under Dabo Swinney Clemson reigns king. However, FSU going into their fourth season under HC Mike Norvell is coming off their first 10-win season since 2016 and have a lot of hype coming into this College Football season; with star QB Jordan Travis returning along with other key starters coming back with one of the best transfer portal classes, Florida State is looking to challenge Clemson for the ACC throne. Florida State on paper has one of their most talented teams in recent memory and are tied with Clemson as the favorite to win the ACC in 2023. JT Sports discusses if FSU will dethrone Clemson for the ACC title in 2023.

Rx: Fixing Bowl Season

Inspired by the SI:AM daily email "Give Me the Liberty [Bowl], or Give Me Death!"
Ross Dellenger reported that bowl officials are looking into...

  • shifting game dates to earlier in December
  • incorporating more bowls into a larger College Football Playoff
  • adding NIL payments to players who play in the games
  • “stiffening” the bowl eligibility requirements (6 or 7 wins?)

On Bowl-eligibility:

There are currently 41 bowl games. Dellenger wrote:

“In nine of the last 10 years, the number of bowl spots have out-numbered the number of bowl-eligible teams, forcing bowls to incorporate those with 5–7 records.”

Tesla to open its first Upstate New York sales showroom in deal with Oneida Indian Nation (PS; Cazentre)

Tesla, the world’s largest maker of electric vehicles, plans to open a sales and delivery outlet with service and expanded charging locations just off the New York State Thruway in Madison County.

The 25,000-square-foot showroom is planned for a tract of Oneida Indian Nation-owned land across from the International Boxing Hall of Fame at Thruway Exit 34 near Canastota. It would be Tesla’s first direct sales outlet in the state outside the New York City area and is expected to open in 2025.

But you won’t have to wait that long to find Tesla nearby.

Starting in a week or so, Tesla will offer delivery of pre-ordered electric vehicles at the Oneidas’ Turning Stone Resort Casino off Thruway Exit 33 in Verona. Tesla will maintain offices at Turning Stone for delivery processing and registration. Delivery will be available on the top floor of the casino’s parking garage. That will continue during construction of the new showroom.

The Tesla deal with the Oneidas provides a legal framework for the auto company to expand into Upstate New York.

Tesla, whose CEO is billionaire Elon Musk, has always preferred to sell directly to consumers without going through third-party dealerships. But a New York state law that took effect in 2014 tightened up rules that require vehicle manufacturers to sell through dealerships.

New public boat launch opens on Barge Canal near Sylvan Beach (PS; $; Featherstone)

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation opened a new boat launch at Cove Road in the town of Verona, about a mile east of Sylvan Beach.

The newly constructed launch, which includes ADA enhancements for people with disabilities, connects to Oneida Lake via the Barge Canal. It has a two-lane, concrete launch ramp with floating docks, a canoe/kayak launch, fishing pier, parking area with 24 car and 49 car/trailer parking spaces, including some accessible parking, and port-a-johns.

The Oneida Lake Association, which consulted with DEC on installation of the launch, recommends approaching it from the north on Cove Road. If you enter from the south side you’ll encounter a dead end with little room to make a turn-around.

“The Cove Road Boat Launch has been a long time coming and we are excited to see a safe water boat launch site at the east end of Oneida Lake,” said Scott Faulkner, secretary of the Federated Sportsman Clubs of Oneida County.

Oneida Lake is New York’s most heavily fished inland water, and the largest lake lying wholly within state borders. It’s best known for walleye, but it’s also is a great place to hook yellow perch, bass, and panfish. Lake sturgeon swim in Oneida Lake’s tributaries, but they’re protected and cannot be fished or possessed.
