Welcome to Free Queso Day!

Salsa and chips are always free at Moe's Southwest Grill, but queso—or "liquid gold," as they call it—is also free today. Why? Because it's Free Queso Day! Each year on the day, Moe's gives out a free six-ounce cup of their queso as a way to thank their loyal customers. In past years, the restaurant—which is a fast-casual franchise that serves southwestern food in around 700 locations—has held contests giving those who enter the opportunity to win free queso for life. (Well, at least one free cup a week for 24 years.) In 2019, the day was expanded to "Queso Season," and queso was celebrated all of September. Not only was free queso available in-store, but also by using the Moe Rewards app, online ordering, and catering. Moe Rewards members also got an extra 100 bonus points for every purchase of queso they made during the month.

‘NATIONAL BRAND’: Stanford matchup signifies start of Syracuse’s dreams in realigned ACC (DO; Andrews)

John Wildhack wants Syracuse to be the supreme block “S.” SU’s director of athletics since 2016 prides himself on building the Orange into a worldwide commodity, with an emphasis that their bright orange “S” logo — which debuted in 1893 — must remain a universal symbol.

He sits each day in his office — a room buried in the John A. Lally Athletics Complex with hardwood floors that mimic Syracuse’s basketball court — attempting to ascertain how to do so. How can Syracuse stand out? What can be done differently? What’s best for the university moving forward?

In the fluid landscape of college sports, though, unpredictability reigns. The Atlantic Coast Conference has already added another block “S” school, which has to quickly get comfortable with the grueling 3,000-mile flight from northern California to central New York.

Yet the distance excites Wildhack, after the ACC admitted Stanford, California-Berkeley and Southern Methodist into the conference on Sept. 1, 2023. Breaking from the tradition of solely traveling up and down the Atlantic Ocean every season means Syracuse can venture its influence westward. Wildhack said when he flew out west to meet with alumni donors in the past, their top complaint was that SU rarely played in the region. That’s no longer an issue.

“Our brand is a global brand, right?” Wildhack reasoned after stating his support of the ACC’s expansion. “We’ve got a large student population from California, and a growing undergraduate population from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. So I thought, from a brand perspective, it made a lot of sense for Syracuse.”

Wildhack, and 11 other ACC athletic directors, approved a three-team expansion to push the conference to 18 schools beginning in the 2024-25 academic year. Syracuse’s Sept. 20 home game against Stanford is the first ACC football matchup featuring a newly-integrated university, signifying the start of the conference’s future.

Football, specifically, has caused numerous Power Five conferences to realign in heavy doses over the last few years. It’s created a landscape Wildhack called “unsettled,” with the deciding factor to switching conferences often coming down to media rights deals.

INAUGURAL BATTLE: Previewing Syracuse football’s 1st-ever matchup vs. Stanford (DO; Andrews)

Syracuse and Stanford have both been prominent universities since the late 1800s. In that time, SU saw some of the most legendary athletes of all time across a multitude of sports pass through its corridors, like Jim Brown, Pearl Washington and the Gait brothers. The Cardinal have also developed a renowned institution of athletic excellence, as Stanford students or alumni have medaled in every Olympic games since 1908.

Yet, the two schools, located on opposite sides of the United States, have never battled on the gridiron. That changes Friday night.

The Orange host the Cardinal on primetime in their third game of the 2024 season, which comes after an idle week. Before the bye, SU quickly found a rhythm in its first two games under head coach Fran Brown. Syracuse defeated Ohio, then upset then-No. 23 Georgia Tech as quarterback Kyle McCord led the nation with eight passing touchdowns through the first two weeks.

Meanwhile, Stanford enters Friday following an idle week as well. But the Cardinal stumbled at home in Week 1, with a narrow loss to TCU, before bludgeoning Cal Poly of the Big Sky Conference in their next contest.

Here’s what to know before Syracuse (2-0, 1-0 ACC) takes on Stanford (1-1, 0-0 ACC) in the JMA Wireless Dome:

All-time series

This is the two teams’ first-ever meeting.

The Cardinal report

Following former head coach David Shaw’s 12-year tenure, Stanford is now in its second season of the Troy Taylor era. The Cardinal struggled significantly in their first campaign under Taylor. Stanford went just 3-9, falling to a measly 2-7 in Pac-12 competition.

Friday will be the first-ever ACC game for the Cardinal. The university was admitted in the conference’s three-school expansion on Sept. 1, 2023, along with California-Berkeley and SMU. On paper, Stanford may be in for a rude awakening against Syracuse.

The Cardinal faltered in a variety of avenues in their 34-27 Week 1 loss at home to TCU. The Horned Frogs’ offense outgained Stanford by 171 yards, mostly due to an 188-yard passing yards discrepancy. Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels completed under 50% of his 35 pass attempts while the Cardinal rushing offense generated just 3.3 yards per carry.

Stanford did recover two fumbles against TCU, but only one resulted in a touchdown on the other end. It garnered just one sack as well, allowing Horned Frogs’ quarterback Josh Hoover to sit back in a clean pocket and run a successful pass-heavy offense. The Cardinal stayed close overall, but lacked enough explosive offense to match TCU.

In its next game, Stanford dominated Cal Poly 41-7 and racked up 437 total yards of offense. Though, versus a lowly Football Championship Subdivision opponent, any positives taken from that matchup won’t be as easy to replicate against a team like SU.

How Syracuse beats Stanford

It sounds simple, but the Orange just need to play their game to leave the Dome with a victory. McCord is already receiving early Heisman Trophy attention for his 735 yards and eight touchdowns across Syracuse’s first two wins. SU hasn’t even had to rely on running back LeQuint Allen Jr. much thus far. On Friday, that will likely continue.

Syracuse football’s O-line is passing the eye test. It still has to prove it’s the real deal (PS; $; Leiker)

One teammate comes to mind immediately when J’Onre Reed and Da’Metrius Weatherspoon are asked who’s the most vocal on Syracuse football’s offensive line.

Reed is the first to name him, speaking seriously at first and then devolving into a fit of laughter.

“Mark,” Reed says, referring to right guard Mark Petry.

Weatherspoon begins to rank the group: “It’s Mark, then it goes Reed, then it goes (Jakob) Bradford, then me.”

“We don’t get nothing from Savion (Washington),” Reed finishes, both he and Weatherspoon still laughing.

Communication is a pride point for an Orange O-line that has passed the eye test for improvement through the first two games of the season and is lauded by coaches and teammates.

The starting five — from left to right, Weatherspoon, Bradford, Reed, Petry and Washington — have played nearly every single offensive snap together this season.

They’ve allowed 16 pressures per Pro Football Focus. Only three have turned into hits on quarterback Kyle McCord, and the advanced analytics service labels just one of two sacks as having been allowed by the line.

McCord seemed to agree with that assessment, saying Tuesday he thought both times he was sacked, he could have gotten the ball out.

When asked what’s impressed him most about the O-line on Monday, coach Fran Brown kept it simple: “They’re keeping Kyle healthy. That’s really all I care about.”

Still, the group has doubters, and justifiably so with just two teams under its belt. Reed and Weatherspoon even said they’ve yet to play their best game as a unit.

Among ACC teams, Syracuse is ninth in pass block grade (72.8%) and 12th in run block grade (60.3%), according to PFF.

Those numbers include other players outside the O-line who block, like tight ends and running backs.

Looked at individually, none of the Orange’s starting O-linemen crack the Top 20 for overall offensive grade in the ACC. Weatherspoon, the team leader, is No. 23 with a 72.2%.

Syracuse seeks to open 3-0 as ACC newcomer Stanford arrives for the schools' 1st meeting (apnews.com)

Stanford (1-1) at Syracuse (2-0, 1-0 ACC), 7:30 p.m. ET, Friday (ESPN)

BetMGM College Football Odds: Syracuse by 8 1/2.

Series record: First meeting.

What’s at stake?

Stanford is making the very long trip to upstate New York for its first ACC game after joining the conference from the Pac-12 over the summer. Syracuse is coming off a Week 2 upset of then-No. 23 Georgia Tech and needs to avoid a letdown in the third of a four-game season-opening homestand.

Key matchup

Syracuse QB Kyle McCord vs. the Stanford pass rush. McCord has been sacked only twice and is first in the nation with 29.5 completions per game, second with 367 passing yards per game and 11th with eight touchdown passes. That doesn’t bode well for Stanford, which is stingy so far against the run but has just two sacks and allows an average of 278.5 yards passing per game. The Cardinal would love to chew up the clock behind its run game, but is 101st in the country in rushing yards, averaging just 3.48 yards per carry. It could be a big day for McCord and a group of receivers led by Oronde Gadsden II and Trebor Pena.

Players to watch

Stanford: Elic Ayomanor, who has 10 receptions for 147 yards and was one of three wide receivers to make the all-ACC preseason team. He is one of the fastest players in the country and will be a challenge for the Orange secondary.

Syracuse: Edge rusher Fadil Diggs moved from his normal position to linebacker against Georgia Tech with great results. He tied for the team lead with seven tackles and made two of the team’s three tackles for loss, none bigger than a huge fourth-down stop in the fourth quarter. Diggs led a defensive effort that held the Yellow Jackets to just 112 yards rushing.

Facts & Figures

Both teams are coming off byes. … Stanford is 10th in the nation in rushing defense and fifth on third-down conversions but only 73rd in total defense and 118th in passing yards allowed per game. … The Cardinal lead the ACC in punt return yardage. … Pena has four receiving touchdowns.

Former Orange QB returns for Syracuse football vs. Stanford on Friday: How to watch (PS; Axelson)

The 2-0 Syracuse Orange Football team may be welcoming the Stanford Cardinal to the JMA Wireless Dome for a historic first matchup, but they’ll be playing against one familiar face when the teams clash on Friday, September 20, 2024 (9/20/2024) at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Syracuse vs. Stanford airs nationwide on ESPN, and can be streamed live on fuboTV (free trial). Incidentally, DirecTV customers are no longer blacked out from watching the game.

Syracuse enters the contest 2-0 to start the season following a massive upset win over No. 23 Georgia Tech, 31-28. The Cardinal is 1-1 after crushing Cal Poly 41-7 in their second game.

Stanford will bring quarterback Justin Lamson on the long trip east. Lamson played for the Orange in 2021 and 2022, seeing limited play, before transferring to Stanford prior to the start of last season. The former Syracuse quarterback didn’t mince words when warning his new team of their impending opponents.

Syracuse Football could have TROUBLE Running the Ball against Stanford | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football Head Coach Fran Brown faces a unique challenge with the Stanford Cardinal coming to the Dome this Friday. Syracuse is a home favorite and on the verge of being an AP Top 25 team. That makes Brown's squad the "hunted" instead of the "hunter". Syracuse and Stanford are also coming off a bye week, and Troy Taylor did lead the Cardinal to a comeback win over Colorado last year off a bye. Plus, Stanford is dangerous with Ashton Daniels, Elic Ayomanor, and its run defense.

Jackson Holzer believes Friday night is a unique challenge for Fran Brown and Syracuse Football on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Local fans weigh pros and cons of Syracuse's Friday night football game (cnycentral.com; Ostrander)

The Syracuse Orange football team returns to the Dome this week. They'll face the Stanford Cardinals on Friday night, instead of their normal schedule on Saturday afternoons.

Traditionally, Friday night football has been reserved for the high school level. But now, football conferences and TV companies are starting to broadcast college games on Friday nights.

For some fans, like Frank Gellis, who graduated from Syracuse in 1976, they enjoy the importance of a Friday night game.

I think a night game, especially on national TV, is a big thing for SU. I think it’s a big boost for recruiting, and for the local fans, they should come out and party on a Friday night.
But for Mike Vadala, who lives in Rochester, a Friday night game is welcomed as it takes the pressure off having to wake up early and drive to the Dome for a noon kickoff.

“I come over from Rochester when we have a noon game; I have to get up so early. For the night game, it's awesome for me. I come over, play golf, and spend the day, then go to the game; it's terrific.”

Syracuse football announces first sellout of Fran Brown era (PS; $; Leiker)

Syracuse football has reached its first sellout of the Fran Brown era just four games into the season.

Syracuse Athletics announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Orange’s game against Holy Cross has sold out. The game between the two programs is set for noon Sept. 28.

Resale tickets are currently still available on Ticketmaster, SeatGeek and others.

The JMA Wireless Dome’s new capacity after seating renovations is 42,784.

SU’s last football sellout with the previous capacity (49,262) was against Notre Dame in October 2022. Its largest crowd in 2023 was 42,523 against Boston College.

Syracuse’s matchup with Holy Cross falls on the university’s family weekend and youth sports, cheer and dance day.

It is also the last home game for the Orange until Nov. 2 against Virginia Tech. The Orange is on the road for three games in October and also has its second bye week.

So far this season, Syracuse has logged attendance totals of 37,225 against Ohio for its season opener and 39,550 against Georgia Tech.

Brown addressed attendance during his Monday press conference.

“With football you have to show them some consistency,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve been consistent enough for them to say (the Dome) has to be packed. We haven’t been consistent enough.”

Earlier this week, Syracuse announced lower bowl seating for Friday night’s game against Stanford had sold out. There are still upper bowl tickets available, as well as tickets in both bowls available on reseller websites.

Syracuse football has made a big impression on 4-star CB, a top-30 national prospect (itlh; Adler)

It's early in his recruiting process but so far, 2027 four-star cornerback and top-30 national prospect Kenton Dopson III thinks highly of Syracuse football.

That's according to a recent media report from Adam Gorney, the national recruiting director for and Yahoo Sports.

In recent days, published its inaugural national rankings for the 2027 class, including 100 prospects.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Dopson, who holds an Orange offer and has visited the 'Cuse campus, arrived as four stars and No. 26 across the country in the 2027 cycle, per these initial ratings.

Syracuse football has gotten involved early on with 2027 4-star cornerback Kenton Dopson III.

Dopson is a sophomore at Miami Norland Senior High School in Miami Gardens, Fla. According to his X page, he received a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse staff, led by first-year head coach Fran Brown, on April 6 of this year.

Syracuse Needs To Blow Out Stanford (orangefizz.net; Gotkin)

The expectations around Syracuse football are higher than they’ve been in a very long time. With the easy schedule and how bad the ACC has looked there’s a chance for SU to do something special this year. But, for this program to legitimately take the next step and prove that it can be in the upper echelon of ACC teams, then it has to blow out Stanford this weekend and prove that the Orange are as good as people say. This team barely got away from Georiga Tech with a win. Syracuse was obviously the better team, dominating pretty much from start to finish. But late mistakes, including an onside kick, meant that it ended as a three-point win.

Syracuse needs to make a statement to the rest of the ACC and the country that it is not going to play around this year. A 14-point win over GT two weeks ago potentially could have put SU in the rankings already. The voters aren’t watching every game, they look at the final scores and vote based on that. A blowout win on Friday would put the ‘Cuse on the national radar. People pay attention to blowouts in power four games, they don’t bat an eye when a team wins by a touchdown.

Right now, Syracuse is an 8.5 point favorite against Stanford. The Orange need to not just cover the spread, but win by 20+ to prove that it is a contender in the ACC. SU isn’t going to get many opportunities to beat good teams this year so it has to prove that it is at the next level by demolishing worse teams. The last time Syracuse beat a conference opponent by 20+ points was the opener in 2022. Just remember how much that catapulted the ‘Cuse the rest of the way. SU got all the way into the top 15 that season and did it because it proved that it was a step above the rest of the ACC.

Stanford, Cal to Make History with First ACC Football Games (theacc.com)

The Atlantic Coast Conference is set to make history this weekend as two new members, Stanford and Cal, will play their first ACC game in Week 4 of the 2024 college football season.

Stanford’s first conference game as a member of the ACC will kick off at Syracuse on Friday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The following day, Saturday, September 21, Cal will play its first ACC game as a league member at Florida State at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Both games mark the first-ever meeting between the now-conference foes on the football field.

Cal, Stanford, and SMU were admitted as ACC members on September 1, 2023. SMU officially joined the ACC on July 1, 2024, while Cal and Stanford became full-time members on August 2, 2024.

This will be the first time Stanford plays a conference game not as part of the Pac-12 Conference since joining the then-Pacific Coast Conference in 1919. Similarly, Cal's game against Florida State will be its first conference game not as a member of the Pac-12, which it helped establish in 1915.

Both Stanford and Cal were members of the Pac-12 - previously known as the PCC, AAWU, Pac-8 and Pac-10 - for over 100 years.

The two ACC teams have a chance to join seven other full-time ACC members both current and former, as well as Notre Dame in 2020, in winning their first conference game as part of the ACC.

Duke, North Carolina, and Maryland were all victorious in their first ACC games in 1953, the first season of the conference. Florida State won its first ACC game in 1992, while Miami and Virginia Tech won their first conference games as members of the ACC in 2004. Louisville also won its first conference game in its inaugural year in the ACC in 2014. Notre Dame, which played a full ACC schedule in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also won its first ACC game that season.

In contrast, nine teams, both former and current members, lost their first conference game as ACC members.

No. 21 Clemson, N.C. State open ACC play at Death Valley (yahoo.com; Canadian Press)

N.C. State (2-1) at No. 21 Clemson (1-1), Saturday, noon ET (ABC)

BetMGM College Football Odds: Clemson by 20.5 points.

Series record: Clemson leads 60-30-1.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Clemson, which moved up a spot in the rankings during a bye week, can make a statement it can contend for an Atlantic Coast Conference crown and College Football Playoff spot with a league win against the Wolfpack. N.C. tate lost its first measuring-stick game badly against Tennessee and now gets another, though this time it would play a role in whether the Wolfpack can compete for an ACC title.

KEY MATCHUP

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik vs. N.C. State's defense. Klubnick struggled in a season-opening, 34-3 loss to Georgia, then had the game of his life in a 66-20 win over Appalachian State. He accounted for seven TDs (five passing, two rushing) and threw for a career-high 378 yard s against the Mountaineers. It will be up to the Wolfpack to see if they can rein in Klubnik and the potent attack the Tigers showed two weeks ago.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

N.C. State: QB CJ Bailey, a January enrollee, is set to make his first career start at Death Valley after an injury to starter Grayson McCall in last week’s win against Louisiana Tech. Bailey threw for 156 yards and an interception while also running for a score.

Clemson: LB Barrett Carter, known as “Agent Zero” for his 0 uniform number, is a preseason All-American who has yet to fully assert himself this season. He's played 88 snaps with just four tackles, one pass breakup and a quarterback pressure.

FACTS & FIGURES

Clemson is a win away from its 800th victory in school history. It would be the 14th FBS program, but first in the ACC. ... The Tigers had won eight straight meetings from 2012-19, but N.C. State has taken two of the last three. … Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is two victories away from tying the late Florida State great, Bobby Bowden, for most wins leading an ACC program. ... N.C. State hasn’t won at Clemson since 2002 when Philip Rivers was the team's star quarterback. … This is just the third time in the last 13 years Clemson has opened ACC play at home. The Tigers have won eight of their last nine conference openers since 2015. ... The Wolfpack won 34 games in the past four seasons combined. ... The series called the Textile Bowl for the two states' importance in that industry goes on hiatus after this until 2027, when the teams next play in Raleigh.

by Jon Loesche/Tomahawk Nation
Where does he get these numbers? I'll try to explain in terms even I can understand...
  • The Tier 1 Contract numbers come fom the ESPN contract in FSU's possession
  • Projected ACCN Profit is based on past ACCN revenue plus best guess for CA and TX
  • Projected ACC payout is T1 + 1/2ACCN (which is split with ESPN)
  • Projected Net Cost to ESPN is T1 - 1/2ACCN (i.e. T1 cost, offset by ACCN split)
The OP really focuses on how cheap this whole deal is for ESPN, thanks to the fact that their T1 cost is partially offset by their share of ACC Network profits. However, as ACCN profits level off and finally begin to shrink - while T1 contract costs continue to rise every year - the deal will eventually become much more expensive. For that reason, they argue, ESPN might not be willing to extend the ACC contract through 2036.
Would ESPN agree to extended it until 2030, though? That seems very possible - and, perhaps, why we're hearing that the ACC, Clemson, and FSU may also negotiate a reduction in the length of the Grant of Rights so that it expires in 2030 as well.
Something else I learned from the Tomahawk Nation article: Notre Dame's share of the T1 money is 18.4% (not the 20% I was led to believe).

Projected ACC Payout per school
(if the current carriage deal remains)
Season$ from T1$ACCNtotal payout
2024-2025$23,928,811$23,722,222$47,651,033
2025-2026$25,005,608$27,043,333$52,048,941
2026-2027$26,130,860$25,691,167$51,822,027
2027-2028$27,306,749$24,406,608$51,713,357
2028-2029$28,535,552$23,186,278$51,721,830
2029-2030$29,819,652$22,026,964$51,846,616
2030-2031$31,161,536$20,925,616$52,087,152
2031-2032$32,563,806$19,879,335$52,443,141
2032-2033$34,029,177$18,885,368$52,914,545
2033-2034$35,560,490$17,941,100$53,501,590
2034-2035$37,160,712$17,044,045$54,204,757
2035-2036$38,832,944$16,191,843$55,024,787

The projected revenue for 2024-25 shows a pretty significant bump from recent payout info - and there is revenue growth, despite what we all assume to be a period of declining ACCN revenue thanks to cord cutting. And let's be honest, it's still a whole lot cheaper for ESPN than the SEC or the Big Ten!

Another Realignment Endgame - 2024 Sep 18

Here's another gem from JRSEC, Auburn fan and CSNBBS moderator...

From CSNBBS - The New PAC 6: Is It An Aftershock of OU/UT & USCLA Or A Foreshock Of ACC Movement?, posted by JRSEC (Auburn fan):

...what if [recent realignment] is a pre-shock of expected movement from the ACC and to the ACC?
That would paint an entirely different picture.
The ACC and Big 10 have need of more PAC 12 schools. Perhaps the potentially most prized ACC school which the Big 10 might like to have is Stanford. Stanford delivers the Bay area with a huge emphasis in Academics and would make for quite the nice Western Division of a 20 school Big 10.

  • California Los Angeles, Oregon, Southern California, Stanford, Washington.

I just don't see the Big 10 taking both [Cal and Stanford] due to FOX's specific interests and I don't see the two being separated.
If the ACC did lose a school [i.e. one], it would most likely be Florida State to the SEC in an effort of Disney's to secure their current profit model and inventory while adding to that inventory in a meaningful way by rounding out the SEC with one of their desires, Kansas. And with that move they could soothe the ill feelings and restore peace to their holdings.
With Cal and Stanford in hand the ACC might look to the 4 corners of the Big 12 for their refurbishment and to accentuate what for them may be a developing plan to create an identity enhancement. If Duke, North Carolina, Virginia and Miami can be appeased with their projected future as an enhanced all sports conference emphasizing academics, a mantle which rests well upon their shoulders, then perhaps that long awaited settlement to let FSU go will be realized.
As foreshadowed, ESPN has also been eyeing for some time the prospect of securing total rights to not only Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina for hoops, but adding Kansas. In the SEC, Kansas pairs nicely with Kentucky to enhance the basketball lineup and provide a pair of must-see games per year, not to mention they blend so very well with old foes Oklahoma, Missouri, newer foes Texas and Texas A&M and neighbor Arkansas which also loves its hoops.
People may not realize it, but the 5 winningest hoops programs of all time would then be fully under the ESPN umbrella. (1) Kansas, (2) Kentucky, (3) North Carolina, (4) Duke, and (5) Syracuse. ESPN has a good deal of control with regard to what happens with FSU, certainly not total control, but a good bit of influence over all parties involved. And ESPN benefits from this pair of moves to the SEC.
What could make the ACC turn loose of F.S.U.? Perhaps the prospect of truly boosting the ACC and spiffing up the academic profile of the conference with at least 2 of the 4 corners. I say 2 because the Big 10 and FOX might well be interested in Arizona just to keep them out of ESPN's hands and to beef up the basketball profile of the Big 10 while adding a new and significant state. In that line of reasoning Stanford stays with Cal in the ACC which adds Arizona State, and Utah while losing only FSU. Clemson and Miami have good prospects for reaching the CFP with FSU gone, and new post season perks of revenue kept if they stay.
From the SEC perspective having FSU gives them the control they want in Florida and adds a little bit to the coffers for everyone. Kansas in the SEC pays off by drastically enhancing the basketball profile of the conference and would likely be a pro rata add by ESPN who will surely work OOC games in with Duke, UNC, Syracuse and Virginia.
So why is the PAC 6 a precursor instead of an aftershock? Look at what the markets add to the New Big 12. Fresno State, in the Valley, San Diego State in the South, while adding a replacement for Colorado, and picking up another of the stronger G5 brands in Boise State and adding state schools in Washington and Oregon. And BYU is solid for carrying Utah [the state].
There would be likely another couple of minor shuffling moves but it fleshes out the ACC and Big 12 nicely, gives their divisions geographical integrity while cutting down on travel.
Who would the Big 10 pick up to go with Arizona would be one question to be asked. The logical choice might be Colorado for addressing adding another state adjoining their Plains states to their less than Northern Midwest.

  • Arizona, California Los Angeles, Oregon, Southern California, Washington
  • Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin
  • Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State
  • Indiana, Maryland, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers

Where does that leave the ACC?

  • Arizona State, California, Southern Methodist, Stanford, Utah
  • Boston College, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Syracuse
  • Louisville, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
  • Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Florida, Tulane

First ACC Games for Stanford, Cal 2024 Week 4

From the official ACC release of Wednesday, September 18, 2024...

Stanford, Cal to Make History with First ACC Football Games

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference is set to make history this weekend as two new members, Stanford and Cal, will play their first ACC game in Week 4 of the 2024 college football season.

In July, Jeff Hanlon, his son and a new partnership of small general contractors won a $251 million contract to help rebuild Interstate 81 in Syracuse.

Hanlon’s company, Slate Hill Constructors, is the only local general contractor to submit a bid on any of the five contracts the state has put out so far on the biggest project in DOT history.

The price tag is 12 times larger than the typical road and bridge projects they’ve been doing for the DOT for the past 34 years out of their headquarters in Warners.

They were ecstatic.

They faced an immediate challenge: Line up $23 million worth of subcontractors who qualify as disadvantaged businesses – owned by women, minorities or veterans. And enter their names in the DOT’s civil rights reporting system. They had five days.

Federal contracts come with a goal. Give 9% of spending to DBE subcontractors. Or show that you are trying in good faith to meet the number.

Hanlon’s new group, which is called SRV Constructors, solicited 78 DBE firms that deal with granite, steel, paving, landscaping and more. Some said they already had their hands full with the $1.2 billion in contracts already started. Others were wary of such a big commitment. Some quotes were too high. Hanlon and son Brian kept trying with the same good faith they said the state had allowed on previous projects.

On Aug. 7, the DOT said SRV’s time was up.

The DOT notified Hanlon and his partners in an email that they had lost the contract.

They were shocked.

Instead, the state would go with the only other bidder – Salt City Constructors. The state will pay that group $35 million more to do the same job, record show. Salt City bid $286.2 million.

Last week, Hanlon filed a bid protest with the state comptroller’s office. He said it is the first time he has had to fight the DOT. In his protest cover letter, he told a story about how the DOT used to try to help.

A garlic pizza from Sardo's on South Avenue in Syracuse, the 37th stop of our CNY Pizza Tour. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Like every Tuesday morning, the crew at Sardo’s Pizza on South Avenue just outside the city limits made an extra batch of dough yesterday. It’s been this way since the pizzeria opened in 2008.

“We know what Wednesday brings,” said Garet Martini, the manager at Sardo’s. “Best deal in town.”

This Wednesday-only bargain is a 16-inch cheese or garlic pizza for $8.99. While that’s a $7 discount, the midweek steal just may be the cheapest non-chain-restaurant pizza in the Syracuse area. It’s certainly the cheapest of the 37 pizzas I’ve enjoyed in our CNY Pizza Tour this year.

“We don’t change a lot here,” owner Mark Sardo said. “We’ve been doing the crust the same, making our own sauces with the same ingredients, and we’ve been doing the same Wednesday special.”

Said Garet: “We don’t change. Why would we?”

Garet grew up in the nearby Westhill School District, and he grew up on Sardo’s pizza. He and his family ordered pepperoni sheet pizzas for every birthday party and Buffalo Bills game. Now he’s studying business at Le Moyne College while managing the pizzeria. He’s working to own his restaurant someday.

While we wait for him to open his own eatery, let’s grab a slice ...

https://www.syracuse.com/business/2024/09/micron-project-groundbreaking-in-clay-delayed-again.html (PS; $; Coin)

The groundbreaking for the planned Micron Technology chipmaking complex in the town of Clay has been delayed yet again.

Micron now plans to start construction in November 2025, Bob Petrovich, executive director of the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency, told county legislators today during budget hearings.

Micron had originally planned to start construction in June 2024, then pushed that back to spring 2025.

The reason for the latest delay is twofold:

  • Micron’s draft environmental report, a crucial step to getting the project approved, won’t be submitted to OCIDA until mid-December, Petrovich said. The review will likely take months.
  • Micron can’t cut down trees after March 31 because there are two species of endangered bats on the site. The next window to cut trees starts Nov. 1.
Micron announced in October 2022 it plans to build four huge fabrication plants, or fabs, at the corner of Route 31 and Caughdenoy Road. The company said it would spend up to $100 billion over 20 years.

It’s not clear whether the latest delay will also push back the beginning of production at the first fab. The most recent opening date was 2028.

The company last week declined to say when it would submit the environmental report and when construction would start.

“Micron is committed to our planned investment in Clay,” Micron said in a statement. “Micron is working diligently to prepare for construction, which will begin as soon as the local, state, and federal regulatory and permitting processes are complete.”

The next big step in that process is the submission of what’s called a draft environmental impact report. The document, likely to be thousands of pages long, is required by state and federal law. The report will document impacts as wide-ranging as air pollution and job creation, and how Micron would deal with each one.

Petrovich said he expects Micron to submit the report to the development agency about Dec. 15. OCIDA has to review the study and decide if it’s ready to be released to the public.

Micron will simultaneously submit the environmental report to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Program Office, which is overseeing the federal review of the project.

After the two agencies release the study to the public, there will be a 45-day comment period, and then further review by the CHIPS office and OCIDA.
