Welcome to National Fried Scallops Day!

This day is for you Lil Joe!

Scallops are marine mollusks that are about two to five inches in length and swim rapidly in water by opening and closing their shells. One of the main ways they are eaten in the United States is by being fried, but there are many other ways to prepare them such as putting them in soups, in sushi, and sautéeing them in butter.

The Juice Online - 2025 DL Nissi Ogbebor on commitment: 'Syracuse treated me like a 5-star' (r1vals.com; Kang)

2025 DL Nissi Ogbebor has been overlooked for some time.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound athlete from Manotick (ON) St. Mark plays in an under recruited area in Canada, and has been waiting for an opportunity for a school to give him a chance.

Enter Syracuse, who offered Ogbebor earlier in the week. Ogbebor wasted no time, committing to the Orange on Tuesday evening. It is Syracuse's 30th commitment in the 2025 class.

"I chose Syracuse because unlike other schools, they didn't ignore me because I am a Canadian athlete," Ogbebor said to The Juice Online. "They treated me the same as a 5-star player. They saw the potential in me that other schools didn't."

Ogbebor visited Central New York in September for the Orange's matchup against No. 23 Georgia Tech. The Orange won, marking the first win for Fran Brown over a ranked opponent, and the first time SU had accomplished that feat since 2022.

Ogbebor was not only impressed with the style of play, but also how comfortable he felt.

"There is a very familiar atmosphere with the football culture there," Ogbebor said, "which if it isn't should be key to anyone's decision."

He becomes one of the latest Canadian prospects to commit to Syracuse, continuing a pipeline that has produced players like Matt Bergeron, who now plays for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Film Review: Oronde Gadsden stalled against Stanford, Holy Cross (DO; Andrews)

Oronde Gadsden II isn’t one to get “pissed off” about a lack of targets, according to Kyle McCord. Syracuse’s quarterback expresses utmost confidence in his big-bodied but stoic tight end, who takes pride in filling his role as a blocker if he’s not producing gaudy receiving numbers.

Over the last two weeks, though, the McCord-Gadsden connection has struggled. Gadsden hauled in 201 receiving yards and three touchdowns across SU’s first two games of the season. Since then, he’s been held to three catches for 16 yards.

Head coach Fran Brown spoke highly of Gadsden’s blocking ability following the tight end’s latest tough outing: a one reception, four-yard statline against Holy Cross. But Gadsden’s not at Syracuse to block. His expected role as McCord’s No. 1 pass-catcher has diminished as of late, even with wide receiver Zeed Haynes missing time.

“It’s a long season, and the way that he works, I’m not worried about getting on the same page (with him),” McCord said of Gadsden Saturday. “I know that it will come.”

Here’s a breakdown of how scheme flaws and less cohesion with McCord caused Gadsden to falter in Syracuse’s last two games against Stanford and Holy Cross:

Stanford: 2nd quarter, 13:29 — Clogged in the middle

SU offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon enacted an air-raid attack that worked to near-perfection through Weeks 1-2. But, it was a one-dimensional offense against Stanford, failing to eclipse 30 rushing yards as a team.

Adding to a lack of play calling diversity, Nixon hasn’t mixed up his route combinations as well as he had been. Where McCord used to have reads at every level of the field, route trees grew more stagnant. For Gadsden, he’s often been stuck in a clogged middle of the field, an area he previously dominated.

This play is a prime example of that. On a second-and-12 from its own 23-yard line, Syracuse went in shotgun with four receivers out wide. Gadsden lined up in the slot on the left side. In this situation, he fits perfectly as a safety valve for McCord. Athletic tight ends like Gadsden can create chunk plays on second-and-longs through short routes over the middle or out routes near the sideline.

Instead, Gadsden ran a short post route into no man’s land. McCord never saw him as Stanford linebacker Wilfredo Aybar instantly blocked his eyeline to a cutting Gadsden. It took too long for Gadsden, or any receiver, to turn around in free space, leading McCord to get sacked for a loss of nine yards.

Stanford: 4th quarter, 5:25 — Misconnection on routine out-route

Down 23-17 late against Stanford, points were a necessity for Syracuse on this drive. While it wound up finishing with a Jackson Meeks go-ahead receiving score, it was nearly stalled due to a misconnection from McCord to Gadsden.

On this play, a second-and-8 from the Cardinal’s 40-yard line, Gadsden lined up once again in the slot with four receivers split out wide. Off McCord’s cadence, Gadsden dashed four yards upfield and darted left for an out-route. McCord stared him down in a clean pocket the entire way. Once Gadsden broke his route and turned his head, McCord let one rip.

There were numerous issues here. First, Gadsden’s route was well short of the sticks. Second, McCord’s eyes tracking on Gadsden allowed Stanford linebacker Tristan Sinclair to easily read the play. Lastly, the throw itself was a little too late. Gadsden had slight separation just before Sinclair got to him. But the play resulted in McCord’s throw being broken up by Sinclair, setting up a long third down in a crucial spot.

New college football league proposed by Kent Syverud-backed group (DO; Andrews)

College Sports Tomorrow, a group of executives and administrators around the country, proposed in a Tuesday press release the formation of a new, national college football league called the College Student Football League. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud is listed as an ambassador for the group, The Athletic reported in April.

CST’s proposal intends to create a college football “Super League,” formed as a separate entity from non-football sports and their respective conferences. The current 136 Football Bowl Subdivision model would be significantly altered.

The top 72 programs, mostly composed of Power Five schools, would play in the Power 12 Conference, split into six, geography-based divisions. The remaining 64 programs, mostly made up of Group of Five schools, would compete in a Group of Eight Conference. The top eight teams from the Group of Eight would be eligible for a “promotion” to play in the Power 12 in the subsequent season, though the plan doesn’t include a relegation system.

According to CST’s release, the group believes the proposal will allow purely team record and tiebreakers to determine postseason qualification — replacing the current College Football Playoff committee — generate more fan engagement and allow a single body to be charged with managing all 136 teams.

“Historically, the beauty of college football has been how many schools around the country were competing for the championship,” Jimmy Haslam, owner of the Cleveland Browns and a member of CST, said in the release. “We need to bring college football back to the broad, national model of its golden years in a system which fosters more competitive balance.”

Syverud has been outspoken and involved about shifting college football’s landscape in the past. In January, he spoke to ESPN’s Pete Thamel about his involvement in a “Think Tank” led by Len Perna, the CEO of search firm TurnkeyZRG, to figure out a new system of college football. Syverud also was originally reported as a member of CST by The Athletic in April.

“The current model for governing and managing college athletics is dead,” Syverud told the publication.

Other members of CST — which is made up of at least 20 people, per The Athletic — include former NBA player Grant Hill, the NFL’s No. 2-ranked executive Brian Rolapp and Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White, among an abundance of ADs. Perna, whose search firm TurkeyZRG has placed nearly all of the top conference commissioners, is the group’s lead organizer.

With its plan, CST wants to provide a solution to the firestorm of current and future lawsuits centered around the business of college football, while instilling more structure to combat financial issues regarding the transfer portal and NIL — which members like Syverud feel have put college athletics as a whole in peril.

“I really think conferences in the NCAA are at a very significant likelihood of going bankrupt in the near future because of the lawsuits, both the ones that are going to trial soon and those that will follow,” Syverud told The Athletic in April.

CST argues that the CSFL would help organize the disruption and disorder of the NCAA while also reducing the financial and competitive imbalance that separates top schools from smaller universities. The proposal suggests that per-school revenue distribution within each conference would be close to equal. Power 12 programs, however, would receive 94% of the CSFL’s revenue and the remaining 6% would go to the Group of Eight — a stark contrast.

Off the field, the CSFL would use a single, comprehensive players’ association in its collective bargaining agreement, which could allow for athletes to seek collective NIL representation without being deemed employees.

A new conference for Syracuse? (orangefizz.net; Burstein)

There has been plenty of realignment in the NCAA in recent years. But more could be on the way.

A new “super league” proposal was announced Tuesday for the “College Student Football League,” which would realign all current FBS schools into two conferences (an A-tier and B-tier. The conferences would be further split into geographic divisions.

So what would this mean for Syracuse?

From an administrative standpoint, it seems as if the school is endorsing the idea. After all, Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud is on the advisory board for the league and was quoted in initial reports in the spring.

But while details about what the league is looking to do (embrace both competitiveness and more economic opportunities) have already existed, today renderings were revealed of what the league would actually look like. And for Syracuse, it would mean a very different schedule.

The Orange would be in the A-tier “Power 12” conference, as part of the Mideast division. This division would include fellow ACC school Pittsburgh, but also Cincinnati, Penn State, Rutgers and West Virginia. How about that for a conference slate?

Teams would play 13 games, five against the other conference teams, and eight against non-division teams. The top 36 schools from the previous season would get seven home games instead of six.

It’s hard to say the idea isn’t appealing. Competition would be fascinating, with teams having to compete to stay up in the top tier (though with a tough division, an occasional demotion could be realistic for SU).

In addition, Syracuse would have both geographic rivals (like Rutgers and Pittsburgh), and get to reinstate some past rivalries (like West Virginia). This could make for some very fun yearly matchups for the Orange.

Will this league actually happen? Time will only tell. It would require a complete overhaul of the NCAA (though other sports would keep their current conferences). Nevertheless, it’s a fun thought, and with the endorsement from Syverud, it seems Syracuse may be fully on board with the jarring change.

ACC Bowl Watch: How did Holy Cross win change Syracuse’s projections? (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse football came away with a win over Holy Cross on Saturday, but the Orange’s chances of reaching a bowl game actually decreased in ESPN’s Football Power Index projections.

The metric currently projects the Orange to finish with 5.5 wins, down one-tenth from last week. It gives Syracuse only a 48.5% chance of reaching a bowl game.

A win for the Orange over Holy Cross was pretty much viewed as a gimme and Syracuse played mostly to expectations.

The change is probably a reflection of UNLV’s domination of Fresno State (59-14) on Saturday, making this week’s game look like a much tougher task. UConn also played well dismantling Buffalo (47-3) and making the Orange’s last non-conference game more difficult on paper.

Two national experts continue to project that Syracuse will miss the postseason entirely.

I’m still more optimistic than that, but, like the rest of the projections this week, I think Syracuse has a lot of improving to do if it hopes to reach a marquee postseason destination.

Here’s a look at how things could play out in my mind.

College Football Playoff: Miami

The controversial Hail Mary call at the end of Miami’s win over Virginia Tech probably kept the ACC’s dream of having two teams in the College Football Playoffs alive. I think the only way that happens is for Miami to finish with its only loss in the ACC title game. I’ve still got the Hurricanes as the favorites to win it and earning the league an automatic bid.

Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Florida) vs. SEC: Louisville

The ACC traditionally sends one of its better teams to this game. With Clemson and Notre Dame going the past two years, Louisville is next on the list.

Pop-Tarts Bowl (Orlando, Florida) vs. Big 12: Notre Dame

The ACC has sent a ranked team to this game for seven-consecutive years. Notre Dame is always immensely attractive. Right now, the Fighting Irish are outside the College Football Playoff conversation.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl (Charlotte, North Carolina) vs. Big Ten: Clemson

This game has had a representative from North Carolina or Virginia for nine-straight years. With Clemson’s recent run of dominance it hasn’t had a chance to grab the Tigers very often.

Holiday Bowl (San Diego, California) vs. Pac-12: Southern Methodist

The Mustangs’ lone loss to Brigham Young doesn’t look so bad and the Holiday Bowl would probably love to grab one of the three schools in the ACC’s Western Division.

Pinstripe Bowl (Bronx, New York) vs. Big Ten: Pittsburgh

Boston College and Pittsburgh are the logical options to anchor this Northeastern bowl. Pittsburgh hasn’t played here since 2016.

Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas) vs. Pac-12: Boston College

Boston College is having a good season. The Pac-12 representative can supply the fans.

Military Bowl (Annapolis, Maryland) vs. American: Duke

This game has taken teams from North Carolina or Virginia for six-straight years. It hasn’t taken North Carolina since 2019.

Alamo Bowl (San Antonio, Texas) vs. Big 12: California

The ACC’s Pac-12 contingent will be placed in Pac-12 bowl games this season. This one avoids an ACC-ACC matchup.

Fenway Bowl (Boston, Massachusetts) vs. American: Syracuse

The Fenway Bowl will want a Northeastern team to supply fans. Syracuse is the only one left.

Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida) vs. TBD: Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s fan base travels and Tampa is a fun destination.

Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama) vs. TBD: North Carolina

Clash in the Desert: Syracuse Looks to Stifle UNLV in High Stakes Friday Night Showdown (gridironfootballusa.com; Bryson)

As we move deeper into the 2024 college football season, Syracuse heads west for their first road game of the season to face the undefeated UNLV Rebels at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Friday night. This cross-country matchup pits two teams on the rise, with Syracuse at 3-1 and UNLV riding high at 4-0, ranked No. 25 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches’ Poll.

Syracuse Orange: Ready for the Road

The Orange enter Friday’s contest off a dominant 42-14 win over Holy Cross, which improved their record to 3-1. It has been a season of growth for first-year head coach Fran Brown, who has infused the program with a fresh mentality and a commitment to detailed execution. Syracuse will be tested in Las Vegas, where they will play under the lights of Allegiant Stadium, facing a Rebels team that is brimming with confidence.

Kyle McCord has been the star of Syracuse’s offense, ranking first nationally in passing yards per game at 364.8. In just four games, McCord has amassed 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns, leading an Orange passing attack that ranks third in the nation. His efficiency and precision make him a dangerous weapon as the Orange look to outduel the high-scoring Rebels. Wide receiver Trebor Pena has been McCord’s go-to target, hauling in five touchdown passes this season and ranking eighth in the nation in receptions per game.

On the ground, running back LeQuint Allen will look to provide balance to Syracuse’s explosive passing game. Allen has been a versatile threat, leading the team with 113.75 all-purpose yards per game. Syracuse will need to rely on Allen’s dual-threat capabilities to keep UNLV’s defense on its toes.

Defensively, Syracuse has held opponents to an average of 22.5 points per game, but they will need to find ways to contain UNLV’s explosive offense. Linebacker Marlowe Wax will lead the charge, looking to disrupt the Rebels’ rhythm. Syracuse’s pass rush has been a bright spot, and they will need to bring pressure against UNLV’s quarterback to keep the Rebels from getting into an offensive groove.

UNLV Rebels: Chasing Perfection

UNLV is off to a perfect 4-0 start, and they are now the last remaining undefeated team in the Mountain West Conference. Led by second-year head coach Barry Odom, the Rebels are ranked for the first time since moving to Division I in 1978. Their most recent win, a 59-14 dismantling of Fresno State, showcased their offensive prowess and defensive stinginess. UNLV leads the Mountain West in scoring defense, allowing just 13.8 points per game, while ranking second in the conference in scoring offense with an impressive 45.2 points per game.

The key player for UNLV is their new starting quarterback, Hajj-Malik Williams. Williams was named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 list and the Manning Award Stars of the Week following his first career start against Fresno State, where he threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns and added 119 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Williams has transformed the Rebels offense into a versatile threat, and Syracuse will need to be prepared for his dual-threat abilities.

Flip to Syracuse football by 4-star, top-125 national prospect bolsters 2025 class (itlh; Adler)

Never, ever count out Syracuse football first-year head coach Fran Brown when it comes to recruiting.

Brown, as he gets ready to lead the Orange (3-1) into a prime-time, Friday night showdown in Las Vegas against No. 25 UNLV (4-0), came to the Hill after most recently serving as the defensive backs coach at Georgia.

In February of this year, 247Sports named Brown its No. 1 national recruiter of the year for the 2024 cycle, and I can see why. Brown had plenty of recruiting success at Georgia and at other prior collegiate stops, and he's faring well in this regard with the 'Cuse, too.

Case in point, in late March, 2026 four-star athlete/defensive back Demetres Samuel Jr. verbally committed to the Orange, a massive get for Brown and his staff. But then in late July, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Samuel said he wanted to remain in the Sunshine State for college, so he flipped to Southeastern Conference member Florida while reclassifying up to the 2025 cycle.

No worries. Brown and his assistants never stopped their pursuit of Samuel, who is a highly ranked standout at Heritage High School in Palm Bay, Fla. And in recent days, per media reports, Samuel flipped back to Syracuse football from the Gators.

How are Syracuse football transfers doing with their new teams? (r1vals.com; Tramdaks)

In the new world of the transfer portal, each offseason will bring about significant change to their rosters.

Syracuse is no different, as more than two dozen players found new homes after the arrival of Fran Brown.

How are they doing at their new schools? We take a look five of them below.

Damien Alford
Wide Receiver•
6'6" | 215 lbs
Senior @ Utah

Damien Alford considered entering the portal following SU’s loss in the Boca Raton Bowl but decided to stay. The offensive captain was later dismissed by Fran Brown in mid-February of this year and joined the portal in what has been said to be mutual decision.

This all came after Alford had a productive year as the No. 1 receiver following an injury to Oronde Gadsden. Alford finished the season with 33 catches for 610 yards, but only three touchdowns.

Alford committed to the Utah Utes in April, and his team off to a 4-1 start and currently ranked No. 18 in the country.

Still, Alford has yet to record a reception. In fact, the senior has yet to be targeted. There seems to be six receivers ahead of him in the WR room as he tries to get acclimated to the new system.

Juwaun Price
Running Back•
5'10" | 210 lbs
Senior @ North Texas

Juwaun Price committed North Texas in May after serving as SU's primary backup running back in 2023. This is Price's third university as he transferred from New Mexico State to SU in 2021.

Price had a massive season in 2021 with New Mexico State, recording 692 yards and 10 TDs on 135 carries, but after he came to SU he only ran for 205 yards in two years with no scores. In hindsight, SU may have been the best place for him to transfer, joining an RB room of NFL player Sean Tucker, and 1000-yard rusher, Lequint Allen.

North Texas is 4-1 to start the year, and Price joined a large committee backfield, where he is fighting for carries. So far, he has 14 carries for 64 yards and no scores.

This UNT team has seven players with at least 14 carries through the first five weeks. Price recorded all his stats in the first two games, so he is at the bottom of the committee.

Joe More
Offensive Lineman•
6'5" | 311 lbs
Senior @ Arkansas

More ended up being the only player to transfer from SU to an SEC program.
The tackle only suited up in three games for the Orange due to injury after he transferred from Richmond to SU in 2022. In the 2022 season at Richmond, More started all 12 games and allowed just four sacks on 542 pass plays.
Unfortunately, he only saw 29 snaps in orange before leaving SU in April.
Arkansas is trying to stay competitive in the SEC starting out 3-2 with a big game against undefeated Tennessee looming.
More has faced limited playing time thus far in full OL room, seeing rotational and backup snaps.

Syracuse football at No. 25 UNLV how to watch, betting odds and prediction in week 6 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football heads to Las Vegas for a prime-time non-conference showdown on Friday night against a ranked and undefeated UNLV squad.

The Orange, after taking care of business this past Saturday afternoon versus Holy Cross, wrapped up its four-game home stand to commence the 2024 season. Now the 'Cuse and first-year head coach Fran Brown will hit the road for three contests in a row during the month of October.

Up first is a battle in the Sin City with the Rebels, a group that is in a tie for No. 25 in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll while checking in at No. 23 in the most recent Coaches top-25 poll.

According to national analysts and other observers, UNLV is a significant contender to win the Mountain West Conference championship and earn a bid to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.

Dating back to last week, the Rebels have found themselves in the national news regarding some roster developments that center in part on name, image and likeness issues. But make no mistake about it: this talented UNLV team, which is highly explosive on offense, will pose a big-time challenge for the Orange in week six.

Allegiant Stadium hosts the first-ever matchup between Syracuse and UNLV and it comes at a pivotal time for both programs. After the departure of long-time head coach Dino Babers, Fran Brown has had an instant impact on the program. Meanwhile, the Rebels are enjoying unprecedented success, with the Mountain West title in play and a legitimate College Football Playoff shot.

Alongside a 4-0 winning record, UNLV is one of just 10 teams remaining who are perfect against the spread in 2024. Syracuse is currently on the opposite end of the spectrum, going 1-3 against the spread. It’s worth noting the Orange covered the only time they were an underdog this fall. With a combined 5-3 in favor of the under, it might be worth avoiding the 59.5-point line.

Syracuse must improve on the road this year (orangefizz.net; Shalam)

Syracuse football just wrapped up its last game of September, marking the Orange’s last home contest for a full month. Until November 2nd against Virginia Tech at home, Syracuse will play three straight road games starting on Friday against UNLV. The other two matchups on the road trip are NC State and Pittsburgh. In recent history, winning on the road has been a struggle for SU. Over the last ten years, Syracuse is 14-37 away from home. That comes out to just above a 35% winning percentage on the road. On top of that, in three of the last ten seasons the Orange have gone 0-5 away from the dome. Simply put, the road has not been Syracuse’s friend. With that being said, what should Syracuse be expecting from each of these matchups on the road and is it possible for SU to go 3-0 before coming back to the 315? Let’s dive into all of that and more.

@ #25 UNLV 10/4

This is a massive game for Syracuse. At the beginning of the season, nobody thought that the Rebels were going to be a ranked team, or even a potential college football playoff team. All of those doubts were put to rest with UNLV sitting at a perfect 4-0 heading into this week. Some questioned the resilience of the Rebels after their starting quarterback Matthew Sluka and running back Michael Allen both redshirted last week. But, backup quarterback Hajj-Malik Wilson showed out in his first game for the squad throwing for over 180 yards and three touchdowns. The senior also rushed for just north of 115 yards and a touchdown. Some Rebels fans are even happier with Wilson under center now, rather than Sluka who redshirted due to NIL reasons. Nevertheless, UNLV being a top team gives head coach Fran Brown a huge opportunity to knock off another ranked squad. The Stanford loss is still fresh on the minds of Syracuse fans, and a win on Friday could change all of that.

@ NC State 10/12

The Wolfpack are a squad that have gotten beaten up early this season, with starting quarterback Grayson McCall getting injured in week three.. That has led NC State to be 3-2 heading into week six, with freshman play caller CJ Bailey at the helm. The two losses for the Wolfpack came against fourth-ranked Tennessee and fifteenth-ranked Clemson in the first four weeks of the year. While you might think that gives Syracuse an edge heading into the matchup, it could actually come back to bite the Orange. SU hasn’t played a top fifteen squad all season, and the game will also be the first ACC road matchup of the year. With the contest slated for 8 PM, it’s going to be a true test to see if Brown’s squad can compete in a rowdy atmosphere at Carter-Finley stadium.

UNLV checks in at No. 25 in this week's AP poll and No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It's the first time in school history that the Rebels are ranked. The Orange already have one ranked win under their belts this season and Fran Brown is looking to do something that hasn't been done at SU since 2001.

Syracuse hasn't beaten multiple ranked teams in the same regular season (they did beat two ranked squads in 2018, including the Camping World Bowl), in 23 years. The 2001 season saw the Orange win on the road at then No. 5 Virginia Tech, and close the regular season with a win over No. 25 Boston College in the Dome.

2. Good on Good
The passing game will be something to watch for Syracuse on Friday night. The Orange aerial attack has ranked near the top of the FBS all season long in numerous statistical categories. Led by Kyle McCord, who leads the nation in completions per game (28.5) and yards per game (364.8), and also ranks fourth in the country with 14 passing touchdowns.

On the flip side, the Rebels are second in the country with nine interceptions this season. DB Jalen Catalon leads all players with four. Jonathan Baldwin also has two picks on the season.

3. Road Trippin'
The Orange hit the road for the first time this season. The game starts a 35-day stretch without a game in the JMA Wireless Dome. 'Cuse had a similar stretch last season as well, going 34 days without a home contest.

4. The Left Coast
Syracuse heads to the pacific time zone for the first of two games out west this season. The Orange will also play at Cal in November.

Prior to this season, the Orange had not played a game in the pacific or mountain time zones since 2011 vs. USC. Their last game outside of the eastern time zone was at LSU in 2017.

5. Friday Night Lights
This is Syracuse's second of three weeknight games this season, having previously hosted Stanford on a Friday night. The Orange will play at Pitt on a Thursday on Oct. 24. It's the sixth Friday night game in the past for seasons for SU, and the Orange have been victorious in seven of their last-12 Friday night games.

Playing Friday night on the road has been unusual for the Orange. Since 2010, 'Cuse has played 24 Friday night contests, but 19 of those have been at home. Of the five remaining, three have been bowl games.

The Orange are 17-13 in their last 30 weeknight games.

ACC in SP+ after Week 5 (backingthepack.com; PWolf)

In the latest SP+ rankings, Miami fell, Clemson continued to improve, and Syracuse took a huge jump up. Most of the rest of the ACC hung around the same spot.

NC State’s defensive performance was well rewarded by SP+ as that unit saw their rating improve by 2.8 points, resulting in a 14-spot improvement in the defense rankings. Unfortunately, the offense continues to suffer. The unit that failed to put up 200 yards of total offense saw its rating diminish by 1.3 points, correlating to a 5 spot drop in the offense rankings. All told, the Wolfpack’s overall rating improved by 1.8 points, but the ranking fell by 1 spot. Numbers, man.

Pittsburgh has improved 25 spots over the last two weeks, which is impressive work for the Panthers, especially considering they didn’t play last week.

Duke appears to be the conference’s most unbalanced team with a stout defense and an offense that apparently struggles to fight out of a wet paper bag.

Keeping an eye on State’s non-conference opponents, Tennessee checks in at #5, Northern Illinois at #92, and Louisiana Tech at #116. The Huskies loss to the Pack this week dropped them 7 spots and dinged their overall rating by 1.3 points. Their defense, however, checks in at #38, if you’re looking for some kind of justification for the Pack’s poor offensive output last week. Wake comes to town this week with their 96th ranked defense.

ACC Power Rankings: Week 6 (stateoftheu.com; Sciffman)

The ACC is wide open according to many college football prognosticators. I think the Miami Hurricanes and Clemson Tigers are in a tier by themselves, but I’m just a guy that consumes a ton of football every week. Below them, Duke, BC, SMU, and Pitt are raising the ceiling of the ACC so far this season.

Without further ado, let’s get to the rankings.

1. Miami - 5-0 overall, 1-0 conference

The Canes stay on top after their close win against Virginia Tech last Friday night. I’ll use this space to provide my two cents on the controversy of the last play. I was shocked when I saw at least two smart guys on tv sing the blues for Va Tech. Both SVP and Josh Pate said VT fans should be pissed. Um, what? I know SVP wears glasses, but maybe Josh Pate is blind too. You can CLEARLY see the ball moving around, not in anyone’s possession. You can also CLEARLY see the Miami player touching the ball while he is out of bounds. Play over. What am I missing here? Last point: I don’t give a if the call on the field was a catch. The refs in the end zone couldn’t make up their minds and eventually signaled touchdown. The replay CLEARLY showed the play did not result in a touchdown. That’s why we have replay, isn’t it? (Deep sigh).

2. Clemson - 3-1, 2-0

The Tigers were lucky to get Stanford at home the week after the Cardinal had to fly to Syracuse..and promptly pulled off the upset. Yeah, but still. It took a little while for the Clemson offense to get going, but quarterback Cade Klubnik looks better every week. The Tigers have about as much momentum as any team in the country right now, and the only ranked team left on their schedule is Louisville, who they play at home.

3. Duke - 5-0, 1-0

Duke coach Manny Diaz finally beat his old boss Mack Brown and UNC last Saturday. The Blue Devils were down 20-0 in the third quarter before finally finding their offense and coming back. Luckily for coach Diaz, his team is still an underdog at Georgia Tech this Saturday. Manny can convincingly tell his team: “Nobody believes in us!”

4. Boston College - 4-1, 1-0

The Eagles gutted out a one-point win over Western Kentucky last Saturday. Thomas Castellanos, BC’s dual threat QB, was out with an injury. Backup QB and FIU transfer Grayson James did just enough to get the win. I don’t see any updates on Castellanos, but I think he needs to play if they want to beat Virginia this weekend.

5. Louisville - 3-1, 1-0

I thought the Cardinals were going to beat Notre Dame on the road last Saturday. Good thing I didn’t wager on it. The road to the 2024 ACC Championship Game doesn’t get any easier as SMU comes to town this Saturday having finally found their offense. The Cardinals need to beat the Mustangs in order to stay with Miami and Clemson at the top of the conference.

6. SMU - 4-1, 1-0

Wowza. It took a couple games for new Mustangs QB Kevin Jennings to get going, but he and coach Rhett Lashlee are in sync right now. I wish Miami played them this season. If Lashlee and company can pull off the upset at #22 Louisville this Saturday, they should be ranked and taken seriously as a team that could make the 2024 ACC Championship Game.

7. Pittsburgh - 4-0, 0-0

The Panthers are coming off their bye week with a ton of confidence. Good for them, because they are playing the reeling North Carolina Tar Heels this Saturday. Pitt could have a good argument to be ranked if they top Mack Brown’s squad. Also, starting 1-0 in conference play would be huge for the Panthers after last season.

8. Syracuse - 3-1, 1-1

The Orange are coming off an easy win over Holy Cross. Their reward is a trip to Las Vegas to take on #25 UNLV this Friday night. The Rebels will be hyped to host a Power 4 team. They will also be hyped because they really want to have a great season since their starting QB bailed on them due to money/NIL issues. This would be a quality road win if Syracuse can pull it off.

ACC Football Power Rankings: 2024 Week 6 (SI; McGavic)

We're now entering month two of the the 2024 college football season, as well as the start of conference play all around the FBS. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, the storylines are only getting juicier and the intrigue is intensifying.

Two of the top three teams in the conference are coming off of shaky weekends, while a couple schools outside of the top tier are lurking around hoping to make that jump to contender status. Not to mention that the deck chairs continue to get shuffled in the middle and bottom thirds of the ACC.

With that being said, where do things currently stand in the conference following five weeks of football? Check out our week six ACC power rankings below:

1. Miami Hurricanes

  • Record: 5-0, 1-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 1
  • Week 5 Result: W, 38-34 vs. Virginia Tech
Sure, Miami somehow found a way to win, but they certainly didn't deserve to. The Canes' defense looked suspect at times against a Virginia Tech offense that has sputtered some, and their offense - while prolific - certainly wasn't perfect at various points. Add in that final play, and The U is very lucky to be unbeaten still.

2. Clemson Tigers

  • Record: 3-1, 2-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 3
  • Week 5 Result: W, 40-14 vs. Stanford
The more that time passes, the more that Clemson's season opener appears to be an anomaly. Of course, the competition since Georgia hasn't been great, but QB Cade Klubnik has been lighting it up since, and that defense is continuing to look strong. Maybe there is hope for the Tigers, still.

3. Louisville Cardinals

  • Record: 3-1, 1-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 2
  • Week 5 Result: L, 31-24 at Notre Dame
A concerning trend has popped up for Louisville over the last couple weeks. One can make the argument that they were better than Notre Dame was, but they committed way too many mistakes in order to win. Not to mention they looked sloppy at times against Georgia Tech the week before.

4. Pitt Panthers

  • Record: 4-0, 0-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 5
  • Week 5 Result: Bye Week
Pitt hs arguably been the biggest (positive) surprised team in the ACC up to this point. Given how UNC has played up to this point, it wouldn't be shocking to see Pitt go 5-0 to start the year and start generating some AP Top 25 buzz.

5. SMU Mustangs

  • Record: 4-1, 1-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 7
  • Week 5 Result: W, 42-16 vs. Florida State
Way to make a statement in you ACC opener, SMU. Sure, Florida State is hot garbage right now, but the Mustangs' offense looks completely different since making the switch to Kevin Jennings at QB. Not to mention that defense had a bounce back performance after getting lit up in the Iron Skillet.

6. Boston College Eagles

  • Record: 4-1, 1-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 4
  • Week 5 Result: W, 21-20 vs. Western Kentucky
Well, it appears we found out how reliant Boston College is on QB Thomas Castellanos. Credit to the Eagles and backup Grayson James for mounting a fourth quarter comeback (as well of the defense for bending and not breaking), but that offense looked out of sorts without Castellanos for much of the game. Hopefully he's not out for long.

7. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

  • Record: 3-2, 1-2 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 6
  • Week 5 Result: Bye Week
Hopefully Georgia Tech did some soul searching during their bye week, as they haven't looked that great against their two most recent power conference foes. It won't be easy to face an undefeated Duke team.

8. Duke Blue Devils

  • Record: 5-0, 1-0 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 10
  • Week 5 Result: W, 21-20 vs. North Carolina
Speaking of Duke, it's hard to get a firm read on how good they really are, but 5-0 is 5-0. Especially considering they stormed back from a 20-0 hole to take down their bitter rival. QB Maalik Murphy, RB Star Thomas and that underrated defense has Manny Diaz's rebuilding job ahead of schedule

9. Cal Golden Bears

  • Record: 3-1, 0-1 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 8
  • Week 5 Result: Bye Week
It's a shame that Cal chose the worst time to have a stinker, otherwise this weekend's home game vs. Miami could have been a top-25 showdown. At least the Golden Bears got College GameDay for the first time!

10. Syracuse Orange

  • Record: 3-1, 1-1 ACC
  • Last Week's Ranking: No. 9
  • Week 5 Result: W, 42-14 vs. Holy Cross
Just the kind of game to help get Syracuse back on track after a tough loss to Stanford. QB Kyle McCord and the offense were sharp, and their defense enforced their will at the line of scrimmage. Just the momentum they needed ahead of a tough matchup with newly-ranked UNLV.

ACC power rankings: Clemson win, Virginia Tech's near upset of Miami alters rankings entering Week 6 (247sports.com; Hughes)

The ACC provided plenty of theatrics during a dramatic Week 5. Miami's nail-biting win over Virginia Tech highlighted six one-score games from league teams this past weekend. The updated rankings entering Week 6 reflect the conference's action-packed results.

Clemson jumped ACC newcomer Stanford in Death Valley to improve to 2-0 in conference play and take a solo lead in the ACC standings. SMU dropped Florida State to 1-4, while North Carolina blew a 20-point lead to rival Duke in the other conference matchups. Louisville dropped its first game of the season at Notre Dame, having a potential game-tying drive stall at the end of regulation.

ACC play enters full swing in Week 6. Eight conference matchups have the potential to shake up league standings this week. FanDuel predicts five one-score games this week, highlighted by Boston College's trip to Virginia (-2.5) and SMU's first ACC road game at Louisville (-7).

Here are the updated ACC power rankings entering Week 6:

17. WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (1-3, 0-1)

Week 5 Result:
Lost to Louisiana, 41-38
Last Week's Ranking: No. 17
Dave Clawson's crew remains at the bottom of the ACC power rankings. Wake Forest ranks No. 108 (of 134 teams) in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 31.2 points per game. It's the lowest the Demon Deacon defense has ranked in over a decade.

16. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (1-4, 1-3)

Week 5 Result:
Lost to SMU, 42-16
Last Week's Ranking: No. 16
A few held out hope Florida State had turned the corner with a tight win over Cal in Week 4. However, the Seminoles had arguably its worst outing of the season in Week 5 with a 26-point loss at SMU behind three interceptions from DJ Uiagelelei. Redshirt freshman Brock Glenn is expected to start at Clemson this week with DJU nursing an injured throwing hand.

15. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (3-2, 0-1)

Week 5 Result: Lost to Duke, 21-20
Last Week's Ranking: No. 14
UNC blew a 20-0 third-quarter lead at rival Duke on Saturday to slip to a new low in the power rankings. The Tar Heels got good performances from their skill positions, but the Blue Devils exposed serious problems on both sides of the line of scrimmage on Saturday.

14. STANFORD CARDINAL (2-2, 1-1)

Week 5 Result:
Lost to Clemson, 40-14
Last Week's Ranking: No. 11
Stanford won its first-ever ACC game in Week 4 against Syracuse but faced a different pedigree of conference opponent in Week 5. The Cardinal got punched in the mouth at Clemson and has new questions at quarterback after Ashton Daniels tossed a trio of interceptions.

13. NC STATE WOLFPACK (3-2, 0-1)

Week 5 Result: Beats Northern Illinois, 24-17
Last Week's Ranking: No. 13
NC State got back in the win column after last week's debacle at Clemson, but it wasn't easy. NIU pushed NC State around on the line of scrimmage and held the Wolfpack to 2.6 yards per rush.
12. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (3-1, 1-0)
Week 5 Result:
Open
Last Week's Ranking: No. 12
Virginia improved to 3-1 with a 43-24 win over Coastal Carolina in Week 3 and got a bye week to prepare for its ACC opener against Boston College.
"Our goal is to win the ACC opener," head coach Tony Elliott said this week. "It's extremely important to us to win the first game in the conference. We understand the importance of winning the ACC opener. It would be awesome for us to be able to play our best game on the road against a very good football team."

11. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (3-1, 0-1)

Week 5 Result: Open
Last Week's Ranking: No. 8
Cal's loss to Florida State in Week 4 looks worse and worse. The Golden Bears are coming off a bye week and host No. 8 Miami in its ACC home opener.
"I sure hope our players are ready to fix what's wrong," head coach Justin Wilcox said ahead of Cal's bye week. "The coaches and everybody is, too. We have to identify the things that make a difference in the game."

10. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (2-3, 0-1)

Week 5 Result: Lost to Miami, 38-34
Last Week's Ranking: No. 15
Virginia Tech finally looked like the team we expected it to look like when we ranked the Hokies in the top five in our preseason ACC power rankings. The Hokies had undefeated Miami in its crosshairs in Coral Gables but fell to 2-3 after officials overturned a game-winning Hail Mary from Kyron Drones as time expired. Virginia Tech can beat almost anyone in the ACC when it plays like it did against Miami.

9. GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (3-2, 1-2)

Week 5 Result: Open
Last Week's Ranking: No. 7
Georgia Tech's hopes at an ACC Championship game run are on thin ice after a 1-2 start to conference play. The Yellow Jackets got a week to prepare for its ACC home opener against Duke this week. Georgia Tech has won its last three matchups against Duke and has a 10-2 record at home against the Blue Devils since 2000. Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets are 8.5-point favorites as Duke plays its first ACC road game under first-year head coach Manny Diaz.

8. SYRACUSE ORANGE (3-1, 1-1)

Week 5 Result: Beats Holy Cross, 42-14
Last Week's Ranking: No. 6
Syracuse took care of business against Holy Cross in Week 5, recording a season-high 541 total yards of offense. Quarterback Kyle McCord hit ten different receivers as he threw for a career-best 385 yards and four touchdowns. The Orange travel to Las Vegas this week for a tough matchup against No. 25 UNLV before heading back east for its first ACC road game at NC State in Week 7.

Hokies receive a boost after wild finish in Miami week six- ACC Power Rankings (rubbingtherock.com; Farmer)

Virginia Tech was so close to making the ACC championship race interesting. But alas, Miami escaped week five with a win — perhaps with some help from the refs. Consequently, the ACC Power Rankings have changed very little from last week.

So, to get back to the second-most electric finish in college football, the Hokies looked like the team we thought they'd be at the beginning of the season: an ACC dark horse candidate. But instead of coming out of last week's game with a winning record, Virginia Tech is 2-3 with losses to Vanderbilt and Rutgers, who, with all fairness, are playing very well.

On the other hand, Miami avoided a scare after losing the turnover battle 3-1. That was the difference in the game. Nearly every stat was either even or favored the Hurricanes except turnovers, where VT outscored Miami 14-7 in points off of turnovers.

If you remember, the Huskies aren't your normal Group of Five team. They knocked off No. 14 Notre Dame in week one. But now, NC State is 3-2 with blowout losses to Clemson and Tennessee.

ACC Power Rankings updated after Week 5 of college football (on3.com; Kosko)

The latest ACC Power Rankings are here following Week 5 of college football and a full slate of action, courtesy of the On3 Massey Ratings.
The On3 Massey Ratings – which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated high school sports team rankings since 1995 – rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Let’s dive into the ACC Power Rankings following Week 4 of the college football season.

1. Miami

Miami avoided a massive upset at the hands of Virginia Tech to stay at the top of the ACC power rankings. A Hail Mary that wasn’t was the difference.

Cam Ward was still impressive, throwing for 343 yards and four touchdowns, despite two interceptions. He also ran for 57 on the ground and another score. Another Heisman-worthy performance carrying the ‘Canes.

2. Clemson (+1)

Is this the revival of Clemson? The Tigers moved up one spot in the ACC rankings, per Massey. Now granted, it was a 40-14 win over Stanford, which is near the bottom.

Still, it’s now three wins in a row for Clemson and Cade Klubnik does look a lot better. The completion percentage wasn’t there, going 15-of-31, but he fired four touchdowns in the win. Winnable games against Florida State and Wake Forest are next and we could very well see a 5-1 team at the halfway point.

3. Louisville (-1)

A tough first loss for Louisvolle this season, dropping a 31-24 game on the road at Notre Dame. With the loss, the Cardinals dropped one spot in the ACC.

Tyler Shough tried to get Louisville out of a 21-7 hole after the first quarter. He had 264 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. In the end, it just wasn’t enough.

4. Pittsburgh

Pitt had a bye week following its 73-14 demolition of Youngstown State. Based on other movement, the Panthers stood pat this week in the ACC.

Next up is a reeling North Carolina team, which didn’t crack the top 10 this week. It’s fair to expect Pat Narduzzi’s crew to be 5-0 after next weekend.

5. SMU (+3)

SMU might have something cooking here, now 4-1 following a 42-16 dominant win over Florida State. Regardless of what you think of the latter, the Mustangs are making a mark in their first year in the ACC.

Kevin Jennings had 254 yards passing and three touchdowns. Brashard Smith led the way on the ground with 129 yards and a score. Oh yeah, the defense forced three interceptions of DJ Uiagalelei.

6. Duke (-1)

Duke moving down one spot in the ACC despite a 5-0 record? That’s what Massey says this week. But still, give credit to the cigar smoking Manny Diaz who has this team rolling.

Beating rival North Carolina is always sweet isn’t it? It’s probably an even sweeter 21-20 win when you pull off a comeback trailing 20-0.

7. California (-1)

Cal dropped a spot in the ACC this week despite being off. But that has more to do with SMU jumping up a few spots following their win.

The Golden Bears resume action this weekend at home against Miami, the conference’s best team. An upset there could severely shake up these rankings.

8. Boston College (-1)

The Eagles just edged out Western Kentucky Saturday, 21-20. It wasn’t pretty, but Boston College got it done, while dropping a spot in the ACC.

Grayson James had to fill in for an injured Thomas Castellanos and went 19-of-32 passing for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception. BC also erased a 17-7 halftime deficit to improve to 4-1.

9. Georgia Tech

Following a loss to Louisville, the Yellow Jackets fell to 3-2 and had a much needed bye week. Now? GT gets an ACC matchup with undefeated Duke.

Georgia Tech can certainly change things in these rankings with a win. But going on the road is going to be a little tough!

10. Virginia

The Cavaliers also had a bye week following a 43-24 win over Coastal Carolina on September 21st. At 3-1, Virginia can make a statement with a win over Boston College this weekend.

Tony Elliott’s crew will host the Eagles in an intriguing ACC matchup. The winner could very well climb the ladder and garner more attention.

ACC Power Rankings after Week 5

11. North Carolina
12. NC State (+1)
13. Syracuse (+1)
14. Virginia Tech (+1)
15. Florida State (-3)
16. Stanford
17. Wake Forest

North Carolina suffered a bad loss to Duke, but didn’t move up or down this week. Florida State’s latest loss dropped the Seminoles three spots in the ACC as the season has gone from bad to worse.

Preview: 2024 Syracuse at UNLV

When they agreed to this game, I doubt Syracuse thought UNLV would be 4-0 and one of the front-runners for the College Football Playoffs 5th conference champion spot. The Rebels lost their starting quarterback last week over an NIL dispute, but the guy who replaced him let the UNLV offense to 59 points in a win over Fresno State last weekend, so he might be okay. The Rebels also have road wins over Houston and Kansas - not the first names that come to mind when you think "P4", but they count all the same.

According to Athlon Sports, UNLV is the 2nd-best G5 team, behind Boise State.
Meanwhile, the Orange are 3-1, but only one of those wins is over a P4 team (Georgia Tech). The only other P4 team Syracuse has played (Stanford) came into the Dome and beat the home team by a deuce.

That said, the Orange have a pretty good starting QB of their own, Kyle McCord, who transferred to Syracuse from Ohio State. Right now, the Orange have the #2 passing attack in the ACC (behind Miami), and McCord is the #1 quarterback in the ACC with 114 completions on 177 attempts for 1459 yards, 14 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions.

This game kicks off Friday night, October 4th, at 9:00 pm ET on FS1.

Just Say No! (RX; HM)

Just Say No!

They just posted the numbers for last weekend's SEC football games:

Georgia/Alabama killed it, as ESPN expected it would - thus justifying in their minds the hundreds of millions they pay to the SEC every year.
Now they're talking about a scheduling agreement where SEC and Big Ten schools only play each other, and a 14-team playoff where more than half the teams are guaranteed to come from those two leagues.
Now, if you're a fan of an ACC or Big XII school, there's a good chance your favorite team will be left out... and the sad thing is, you voted for it! How? With your eyes. You watched the Georgia/Alabama game. You've been watching SEC and Big Ten football for years, even while you've whined about your school not getting paid as much tv money as they get.

Onondaga County pays highest price yet for last pieces of private land on Micron site in Clay (PS; Coin)

The last homeowners on the proposed Micron Technology factory site in the town of Clay have sold their land to Onondaga County.

The county Industrial Development Agency last week paid just over $3 million for three parcels owned by the Serog Living Trust, according to county records. The parcels, at the north end of Burnet Road, total 22 acres.

The Serog land is in the middle of Micron’s future campus. The family home and barn stand on the spot where Micron plans to build a wastewater treatment plant for the third of four planned fabrication plants, or fabs.

The purchase means that OCIDA now owns all 1,400 contiguous acres of the White Pine Commerce Park, future home of Micron’s massive semiconductor manufacturing plant. The most recent projection for the start of construction is November 2025.

The payment to the Serog trust is the biggest single payment OCIDA has made on the Micron site, but well below the recent average price per acre. OCIDA paid the trust about $137,000 per acre; in 2022, as the Micron decision was nearing, OCIDA paid homeowners an average of $325,000 per acre.

Britta Serog, the trustee for the trust, could not be reached for this story.

For decades, the county has been gobbling up land north of Route 31, between Caughdenoy and Burnet Roads, to lure a semiconductor company. That plan came to fruition in October 2022, when Micron announced it would spend up to $100 billion building a chipmaking complex at White Pine.

Micron is expected to get $20 billion in taxpayer money to build the first two fabs, estimated to cost about $48 billion. That’s a taxpayer subsidy of about 40%.

Syracuse University clears final city review board hurdle for 570-bed dorm project (PS; Boyer)

Syracuse University’s downsized plan for a new residence hall now has the blessing of the City Planning Commission.

A unanimous site plan approval from planning commissioners on Monday clears the way for SU to move forward with a project that will relocate 570 second-year students from its South Campus to a new dorm on Main Campus along Ostrom Avenue.

SU hopes to begin construction in January and have the four- to six-story building open for students by the start of the 2027 academic year. It will be the school’s first newly built dorm since Ernie Davis Hall opened in 2009.

The university in July proposed a 703-bed dorm on a T-shaped lot that would have stretched along Ostrom Avenue and also extended west toward the middle of Comstock Avenue. SU purchased a vacant former fraternity house at 727 Comstock Ave. in 2022 for $3.14 million and planned to demolish it to make room for the new dorm.

But historic preservation advocates opposed the removal of the fraternity house, originally built in 1905 as a mansion for a prominent Syracuse attorney. After two city review boards supported taking formal action to protect the site, SU withdrew its demolition permit application to the city and presented revised plans for the dorm.

The university also scaled back the plan in response to concerns raised by advocates for the historic Thornden Park E.M. Mills Rose Garden across Ostrom Avenue. They worried that the dorm’s shadow could damage the rose plants. The new plan reduced the height of the building across from the rose garden from six stories to five, a change that would result in additional sunlight reaching the garden.

SU officials told the planning commission on Monday that they’ve had discussions with the rose garden caretakers and with fraternities and sororities that own neighboring houses on Comstock Avenue about minimizing the impact of the new dorm. The university said it will provide funding and/or work crews to help with rose garden maintenance, and funding to help create additional natural buffers along the backs of the Comstock Avenue properties.

Price tag nears $100M for Onondaga County aquarium, despite new, lower construction bids (PS; Krauss)

A second round of bids to build Onondaga County’s aquarium has yielded sharply lower prices, but the aquarium is still likely to cost significantly more than the $85 million allocated by the county two years ago.

As of now, the aquarium is likely to cost about $99 million.

County officials recently opened new bids for general construction, the biggest piece of the total cost.

Two of the three new bids came in under $59 million, more than 20% lower than the sole bid of nearly $75 million received during the first round.

Combined with the contracts already awarded for plumbing, electrical and HVAC work – totaling more than $22 million -- the general construction bids could keep the major building costs at roughly $80 million, assuming officials pick one of the low bidders.

The county has already spent $13.5 million on preliminary work, according to records from the county comptroller’s office. That includes the cost of land acquisition, site work, pile driving and capping, plus design fees and other soft costs. And approximately $5.6 million more remains to be paid under the contract for pile driving and capping.
