Welcome to World Octopus Day!

World Octopus Day is part of International Cephalopod Awareness Days, which take place from October 8–12 each year. Since octopuses have eight arms and squid have eight arms and two tentacles, the holiday week begins on the eighth day of the tenth month. Cephalopods are a class of marine invertebrates. Related to snails and clams, cephalopods have arms and tentacles, three hearts, large brains, and blue blood. This day of the week is dedicated to octopuses!

Fran Brown says Syracuse cornerback will return from injury for N.C. State game (PS; $; Leiker)

A key contributor in Syracuse football’s secondary is expected to return from injury this week against N.C. State.

Fran Brown said Monday during his weekly press conference that cornerback Marcellus Barnes will practice and likely play this week after missing nearly three games due to back spasms.

“Marcellus will be practicing, and he’ll be back,” Brown said. “It’ll be good to have him. Hopefully he looks good in practice and can compete with the guys out there to be able to play again.”

Clarence Lewis and Jayden Bellamy have played the majority of snaps at cornerback for the Orange the past two weeks. Devin Grant, who started the season at the position, was shifted inside to play safety to help address other injury absences.

Barnes played 64 snaps at corner through the first three games of the season. He exited early against Stanford with his back issue.

The true freshman has the sixth-highest pass coverage grade (67.7%) on the team per Pro Football Focus. He’s made four tackles and has three pass breakups.

Brown also said Monday that he expects wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons

The Colorado State transfer has made a slow return from a hamstring injury that kept him out the first two weeks of the season. He played six snaps against Stanford and seven against UNLV.
He has yet to be targeted by quarterback Kyle McCord.

“I feel like Justus Ross-Simmons will be back in rare form,” Brown said. “I met with him this morning and we talked a little bit. He’s just ready.”

How Syracuse Football Played its Best Game of 2024 against UNLV Rebels | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football earned a thrilling victory over the AP Top 25 UNLV Rebels 44-41 in overtime in Allegiant Stadium on Friday night. Fran Brown's team played its best game of the season, surpassing its effort over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Kyle McCord and Fadil Diggs had great games for Syracuse, answering the bell from Fran Brown. LeQuint Allen and Yasin Willis proved that the Orange have one of the better running back rooms in the ACC, if not the FBS. FULL Podcast:

UNLV Football falls first time this season, drop OT heartbreaker to Syracuse (fix5vegas.com; video)

UNLV (4-1/1-0) football closed its non-conference schedule with a heartbreaking 44-41 overtime loss to Syracuse.

Fran Brown discusses OT win, NC State ahead of 1st ACC road bout (DO; Stepansky)

For the first time under first-year head coach Fran Brown, Syracuse went on the road. The Orange traveled across the country to Las Vegas and took down then-No. 25 UNLV in an overtime thriller.

The back-and-forth affair came down to the wire, with quarterback Kyle McCord attempting 63 passes and running back LeQuint Allen Jr. breaking through for the game-winning score. The win was the second against a ranked opponent under Brown and SU’s first road victory versus a ranked opponent since 2010.

Up next for Syracuse is a road trip to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on NC State. The Wolfpack are 3-3 to start the season in their 12th year under head coach Dave Doeren.

“I know that it was a great overtime win and all those things of that nature, and it means a lot to our community and just overall,” Brown said. “But at the end of the day, we got to get ready for NC State, because they’re a really good football team who almost won the conference last year.”

Here are some takeaways from Brown’s weekly press conference before his first Atlantic Coast Conference road game as SU’s head coach:

Vegas jackpot

Syracuse’s victory over UNLV was filled with key decisions by Brown down the stretch. None was bigger than the one following Jackson Meeks’ touchdown with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The score cut SU’s deficit to one, forcing Brown to decide whether to kick the game-tying extra point or go for a two-point conversion and the win.

While Brown said he knew much of the staff and fanbase wanted to go for two, he went with his gut and chose the first option.

“I just wanted to put it on the players and give them the opportunity to show how hard they work, and what they’ve done all summer,” Brown said.

SU kicked the extra point, sent the game to overtime and won it there.

Kyle McCord is exactly who Ohio State football fans thought he was (scarletandgame.com; Stano)

The Ohio State football team made a quarterback switch in the offseason. Either Ryan Day said it was best for Kyle McCord to leave, or McCord decided to leave on his own. I tend to believe the former, but it doesn't matter. It was best for both parties if there was a separation there.

Ohio State decided on Will Howard to be the new starter. Howard has been an upgrade, although not a huge one. His running ability gives something that McCord didn't bring to the table. In last week's game, McCord showed he is exactly who Ohio State football fans thought he was.

He proved that he is a pretty good quarterback who is best at a place where he doesn't have a lot of pressure. He'll still make some pretty awful decisions from time to time. McCord had one of those against UNLV, throwing a pretty terrible interception.

Kyle McCord proving to be exactly who Ohio State football fans thought he was

There was also the good part of McCord that made me think he was going to be an All-American. He threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns. Of course, it took him 63 passing attempts to get to those numbers. He can only put up big numbers with a ton of attempts.

Syracuse football: Oronde Gadsden II breaks two program records in UNLV game (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

A career-defining game on Friday night saw Syracuse Orange star tight end Oronde Gadsden II become the new all-time program leader in two major statistical categories.

Gadsden, who finished with a career-high 10 catches and 142 yards versus the No. 25 UNLV Rebels, is now Syracuse’s new all-time record holder among tight ends in receptions (94) and career receiving yards 1,395.

Former tight ends Nick Provo (92 receptions between 2008 and 2011) and Chris Gedney (1,334 receiving yards between 1989 and 1992) were the previous leaders in catches and receiving yards, respectively.

Gadsden’s previous career highs in receptions and receiving yards was against NC State in 2022, when he finished with eight catches for 141 yards.

It’s certainly been a rollercoaster type of journey for the redshirt junior, but Gadsden has legitimately produced when healthy over the course of his Syracuse career.

Gadsden’s freshman year in 2021 started off limited effectiveness, missing some time due to injury and finishing with just two catches for 24 yards in eight games. The following year, he emerged immediately as Syracuse’s top receiving threat.

A first team All-ACC campaign in 2022 saw Gadsden move full-time to the tight end position and finish with 61 catches, 969 yards and six TDs. It was a breakout season for Gadsden, who reached these incredible achievements that year:

  • Most receiving yards among all tight ends
  • Seventh-most receiving yards in a single season in program history
  • Most catches by a sophomore in program history (passing Mike Williams in 2007)
  • Most catches by a tight end in program history (passing Nick Provo in 2011)
  • Most receiving yards by a tight end in program history (passing Chris Gedney in 1992)

Syracuse football recruit Nissi Ogbebor started playing along the defensive line last year. No other college program recruited him. But Fran Brown and the Orange are giving him a shot. Photo by Michelle Rose

No school recruited Nissi Ogbebor, but SU football gives him a shot: ‘They will never, ever regret’ it (PS; Pignatello)

Nissi Ogbebor got off the line so quickly he took himself out of the play.

It was a run up the middle, and the newest Syracuse football commit, playing his first-ever down as a defensive lineman, got an earful from his St. Mark Catholic School (Ottawa) coaches on the sideline.

The next play, he tried a different approach.

Ogbebor got off the line in a hurry again, but this time, he waited for the play to develop. As soon as he saw his chance, he shed his block and took down the quarterback for his first career sack. It was a play that would change his life.

“When I made that sack, that feeling of joy and pride that just took over my body was a very surreal moment,” Ogbebor said.

“Because I had realized that what I had just done wasn’t just based off of what my own talent was, but the fact that people are teaching me how to do these things and then I’m able to apply it was just incredible, especially with a position that I have no clue what’s going on, yet I’m still able to read and make a play.”

That was last fall. Fast forward a year, and the 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive lineman is now committed to Syracuse as part of a large 2025 recruiting class.

He joins fellow Canadian Nathan Nyandoro as one of five defensive line commits in Syracuse’s 30-person class, which is the largest in the nation. Antoine Deslauriers, a linebacker who also intends to sign with the Orange, is originally from Montreal, though he plays high school football in Georgia.

Ogbebor is a three-star recruit and did not have any other offers.

He first gained interest from Syracuse over Twitter (now called X), where he followed a bunch of coaches. SU assistant strength and conditioning coach and scouting assistant Stack Williams was the only one to follow him back.

Williams took a look at Ogbebor’s film from this summer’s Ontario Summer Football League, and after the two messaged over Twitter and talked over the phone, Williams invited Ogbebor to the Georgia Tech game on Sept. 7, he said.

After meeting head coach Fran Brown, defensive coordinator Elijah Robinson, defensive ends coach Nick Williams and more at the Georgia Tech game, Ogbebor made the two-hour, 40-minute drive to Syracuse again on the last weekend of September for the Holy Cross game, with his family in tow.

Syracuse Football: Winners and losers in the ACC amid a chaotic, entertaining week 6 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football and its peers around the Atlantic Coast Conference engaged in some thrilling affairs over the weekend.

We all know how the Orange fared in week six, but what about the rest of the conference? Well, to me, the race to an ACC championship in the 2024 season is still relatively wide open, although some league members are trending up, while a few others (hi, Florida State) are trending way down.

With the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 participants in this campaign, it's possible that the ACC can get two of its schools into this event, although that's far from a certainty. Then again, college football is like a roller-coaster ride so far in 2024, evidenced by numerous top-25 teams falling this past weekend, led by No. 1 Alabama, No. 4 Tennessee and No. 9 Missouri.

And you thought the SEC was head and shoulders above every other conference, including the ACC. Wink, wink.

Syracuse football was a winner in week six; what about other ACC teams?

Winners

Clemson and SMU

After getting crushed by highly rated Georgia to start the 2024 season, Clemson has rattled off four straight wins, including a 16-point road victory over Florida State in week six. The top-15 Tigers (4-1) are hitting their stride and look like a significant contender for the ACC's grand prize.

SMU (5-1), meanwhile, has won three straight. The Mustangs, in week six, beat then-No. 22 Louisville by seven points on the road.

Pittsburgh
The Panthers, a term ago, went just 3-9. What a turnaround for Pitt, which sits at 5-0 after winning at a struggling North Carolina group by 10 points.

Syracuse Football: Where Orange players rank nationally in statistical categories (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football sits at 4-1 after a road win over then-No. 25 UNLV last Friday night in Las Vegas.

That thrilling three-point overtime triumph marked the second instance in the 2024 season when the Orange defeated an opponent that, at the time of their meeting, was ranked in the major top-25 polls.

In the latest Associated Press and Coaches polls that were released on Sunday afternoon, the 'Cuse did receive at least one vote in each poll. Candidly, I didn't think that Syracuse football would reside in the top-25 polls after week six.

However, the Orange travels to N.C. State this coming Saturday and then newly minted top-25 Pittsburgh (5-0) later this month. Should the 'Cuse prevail in both of those road encounters, Syracuse football might merit more consideration in the major polls.

Regardless, the most important thing for head coach Fran Brown and his program is to just continue winning in the 2024 season. If they do that, the national rankings will come.

Let's review where Syracuse football players arrive nationally in various statistical categories.

Note: the stats cited below come courtesy of the NCAA's Web site following week six.

No. 1 in completions per game, at 30.80

Syracuse football bowl watch: Win at UNLV provides big boost to projections (PS; $; Carlson)

Say it ain't so Chris...not the Bronx again!

Syracuse’s win at UNLV last Friday, along with losses from Louisville, Boston College and many of the top teams in the SEC, shifted the Orange’s bowl projections dramatically from last week.

Last week two national experts left Syracuse out of the bowl picture completely. Now the Orange is back in and projected to play in bowls that match Power-Four programs.

The spiciest projections comes from The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who pits the Orange against Arizona in the Sun Bowl. Former Syracuse coach Dino Babers is currently an assistant with the Wildcats.

Another fun projection comes from 247Sports’ Brad Crawford, who projects the Orange to meet LSU in the Gator Bowl.

ESPN’s Football Power Index projections average to a finish of 6.6 wins, meaning the metric’s most likely outcome is a 7-5 record.

Here’s a look at how the bowl picture could play out.

College Football Playoffs – Miami, Clemson

The simplest way for the ACC to place multiple teams in the College Football Playoff is for Miami to finish the regular-season unbeaten and then lose in the ACC title game. For the second-consecutive week, the Hurricanes got a friendly ruling in the ACC’s replay center to remain unbeaten. Clemson’s continued stretch of strong play keeps the Tigers here with losses from Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan and Southern California all helping Clemson’s case.

Gator Bowl vs. SEC: Pittsburgh

Notre Dame would have been a good choice but played here two years ago. Unbeaten Pittsburgh is next on the list of the ACC’s best teams at the moment.

Pop-Tarts Bowl vs. Big 12: Notre Dame

The ACC always sends one of its best here and bowl representatives love when the Fighting Irish come through.

Holiday Bowl vs Pac-12: SMU

The Mustangs look like they could be the beneficiaries of a fairly soft ACC schedule this season especially after winning at Louisville this week. While winning six straight to finish unbeaten and earn a championship game appearance won’t be easy, SMU’s toughest remaining game looks like a home game against Pittsburgh or a visit to Virginia.

Pinstripe Bowl vs. Big Ten: Syracuse

Bowl games don’t love repeat customers but I’m about to make a compelling case for it.

Syracuse fans might groan at the destination. Rutgers fans might too.

But in a world where bowl games outside the College Football Playoff don’t mean much and the value of bowl games is minimized to the point that players sometimes choose not to play, a meeting between two schools that are heavily targeting Northeast recruits is more compelling than either team playing a random Power-Four opponent.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl vs. SEC: Virginia

The Cavaliers are one of four ACC unbeatens at the moment, so they get the last matchup against a Power-Four opponent. The game has taken a North Carolina or Virginia-based school for nine-consecutive years. The Cavaliers have had a six-year break.

NCAA’s $2.78B settlement with colleges to allow athlete payments gets preliminary OK (PS; AP)

A judge granted preliminary approval Monday to the $2.78 billion legal settlement that would transform college sports by allowing schools to pay players.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken released an order setting a timeline for a deal that would put millions of dollars into the pockets of college athletes, who can begin applying for payment on Oct. 18.

A final hearing is set for April 7, 2025, the day that one of college sports’ biggest moneymakers, March Madness, comes to a close with college basketball’s national title game. If finalized, the deal would allow the biggest schools to establish a pool of about $21.5 million in the first year to distribute money to athletes through a revenue-sharing plan. Athletes would still be able to cut name, image and likeness deals with outside groups.

Former college athletes from as far back as 2016 would be able to apply for their share of $2.576 billion set aside to help them recoup money they could’ve made from NIL deals, which weren’t allowed until 2021.

“We are pleased that we are one step closer to a revolutionary change in college athletics that will allow billions in revenue sharing,” said plaintiff attorney Steve Berman.

FINALLY, another ABC game! I was beginning to think they had forgotten about the ACC, what with all their new SEC toys... apparently all it took was for Alabama and Tennessee to both lose, while Miami remained undefeated? Of course, this still leaves the mid-day and prime time slots for the SEC... the ACC continues its strong run on ESPN, though.

ACC power rankings: Miami clings to top spot, Florida State bottoms out after Week 6 (usatoday.com; Kassim)

In a Week 6 chock-full of significant college football upsets, the ACC escaped the worst of the carnage.

On the road, its top-ranked team mounted a 25-point comeback to avoid a rough, late-night loss on the West Coast, though it may have gotten some help to do so with a second-straight controversial ending. Another team saw their coach surpass a historic conference record, passing a legendary coach on a field named after him.

Here’s how the 17 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference rank after Week 6 of the 2024 college football season:

ACC football power rankings

1. Miami (6-0, 2-0 ACC)

  • Last week: 1
  • This week: BYE
For the second straight week, Miami and Heisman Trophy hopeful Cam Ward had to make a furious comeback in the second half to escape with a one-score win. Miami trailed Cal 35-10 with ESPN's "College GameDay" in attendance. Ward led the Canes to a late score with 26 seconds left. However, Miami was aided by a controversial no-call on a targeting call to allow itself to get its final, game-winning possession. Still, Miami remains unbeaten and is in the driver's seat in the conference.

2. Clemson (4-1, 3-0)

  • Last week: 2
  • This week: at Wake Forest
Clemson racked up 500 total yards of offense as Dabo Swinney earned career win No. 174, surpassed late Florida State coach Bobby Bowden for the most career wins by an ACC coach — ironically, on the field bearing Bowden's name. The Tigers look to have recovered from the season-opening loss to Georgia.

3. Pitt (5-0, 1-0)

  • Last week: 3
  • This week: vs. Cal
For the first time in school history, Pitt defeated North Carolina on the road, knocking off the Tar Heels 34-24 and picking up its first conference win of the 2024 season. The Panthers' 10-point road victory helped them gain the No. 24 ranking in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

4. SMU (5-1, 2-0)

  • Last week: 6
  • This week: BYE
There should be no question as to whether the Mustangs belong in the ACC following a 2-0 start in the conference, including a 34-27 road victory over then-No. 22 Louisville in Week 6. SMU's only defeat this year was a close 18-15 loss to BYU, which looks better each passing week as the Cougars have risen to No. 15 in the latest Coaches Poll.

5. Virginia (4-1, 2-0)

  • Last week: 11
  • This week: vs. Louisville
The Cavaliers outscored Boston College 18-0 in the fourth quarter to complete the 24-14 comeback victory at home and rise six spots in the rankings. Virginia continues its best start since the 2019 season.

6. Syracuse (4-1, 1-1)

  • Last week: 8
  • This week: at NC State
The Orange started Week 6 for the ACC with an impressive 44-41 overtime victory on the road over No. 23 UNLV. Despite a loss to Stanford earlier in the season, Fran Brown has impressed in his first season at Syracuse, with help from Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord.

7. Boston College (4-2, 1-1)

  • Last week: 4
  • This week: BYE
The Eagles were outscored 18-0 in the fourth quarter and blew a 14-0 first-half lead after being shut out in the second half. Boston College's last score came with 13:08 left in the first half — a shocking development with the return of quarterback Thomas Castellanos from injury.

TNIAAM’s ACC football power rankings for October 7th (TNIAAM; Wall)

At the request of Syracuse Orange fans, we’re going to give you our ACC Football Power Rankings. Let’s get to this week’s list...

1) Miami Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0) - got another gift from the ACC officials to survive the Calgorithm. Impressive comeback by the Canes but come on here watch how far downfield the OL is when this pass is released

2) Clemson Tigers (4-1, 2-0)- Clemson’s got a pretty good path to the ACC title game as road games at Virginia Tech and Pitt could be the only thing stopping them from a return to Charlotte. Dabo’s already working on a list of Bible references he can use to talk about not going into the transfer portal.

3) Pittsburgh Panthers (5-0, 1-0)- the Fall of Narduzzi is upon us. We’re still somewhat skeptical of the Panthers though.

4) SMU Mustangs (5-1, 2-0)- winning at Louisville is still worth something and SMU is proving to be a good addition to the ACC so far.

5) Syracuse Orange (4-1, 1-1) - the Orange’s comeback in Vegas moves them up because road wins mean more.

6) Virginia Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0) - took care of Boston College last weekend and it’s a nice bounce back season for the Cavaliers so far.

7) Louisville Cardinals (3-2, 1-1)- the Cardinals’ CFP hopes are no longer in good shape after that loss to SMU. Can they run the table including a win at Clemson? That’s their only hope now.

8) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (4-2, 2-2)- they have already played 4 conference games while Pitt’s played one. Doesn’t make sense to have teams that far apart.

9) Duke Blue Devils (5-1, 1-1)- their first loss shouldn’t take away from the fact that Duke is one win from bowl eligibility and just one more year away from finding out Manny Diaz shouldn’t be a HC.

10) Boston College Eagles (4-2, 1-1)- not sure if Castellanos was fully healthy or just too focused on his NLDS series with the Mets but BC’s offense was so dull that Tony Bennett got bored and left the game early.

ACC Power Rankings: Week 6 (bloggersodear.com; Bridgers)

Week 6 is in the books for the ACC, and the conference seemingly avoided the chaos that occurred everywhere else in college football this weekend. Let’s get to the rankings.

Great

1. (↑2) Clemson (4-1)—Another double digit win for the Tigers. Since losing to Georgia in the opener, Clemson is 4-0 and outscoring opponents by an average of 28 points per game.

Great*

2. (↓1) Miami (6-0)—The Hurricanes are undefeated, but the refs have handed them favorable reviews in crucial moments of back-to-back games that stopped that more or less saved them from losing. Probably a coincidence, but maybe...

Contenders

3. (↑6) SMU (5-1)—A ranked win on the road over Louisville proves that the Ponies are in the hunt for the ACC Championship Game. They are definitely taking advantage of their first season as a P4 team.

4. (↓3) Pitt (5-0)—The Panthers get to 5-0 for the first time since 1991 win a road win over UNC. I’m not entirely sold on the Panthers yet, but they keep proving me wrong.

Bowl Teams

5. (-) Louisville (3-2)—The Cardinals have lost back-to-back games, but against very solid Notre Dame and SMU teams. That shouldn’t really impact their overall season.

6. (↑9) Syracuse (4-1)—The Orange went on the road and beat a very good, ranked UNLV team in overtime. That home loss to Stanford is still pretty baffling to me.

7. (↑10) UVA (4-1)—The Hoos scored 18 points in the 4th quarter to comeback and beat Boston College. Virginia is somehow 4-1 and tied for the top of the ACC at 2-0.

8. (↓4) Boston College (4-2)—The 4th quarter for the Eagles against UVA went interception, fumble, turnover on downs, interception. Definitely a bad loss, but if you’re BC, you can probably chalk this one up to a few minutes of bad luck.

9. (↓8) Cal (3-2)—The Bears should have beaten Miami, but they blew a 20-point lead in the 4th quarter. Cal is a couple of plays away from being undefeated, but it seems like they can never make a play when they need it.

10. (-) Georgia Tech (4-2)—The Yellow Jackets hand Duke their first loss of the season. GT has a pretty brutal schedule remaining (Notre Dame, Miami, Georgia), so we’ll see what they can do.

11. (↓7) Duke (5-1)—The Blue Devils are kind of who I thought they were—an undefeated team that hadn’t played anyone yet. In their first game against an above average team, Duke finished with 14 points and 279 yards of offense.

12. (↓11) VT (3-3)—With a dominant win over Stanford, the Hokies are halfway to a bowl game. VT has a very favorable schedule from here on out, so they could wind up like 8-4 after a disastrous start to the season.

Could Turn It Around

13. (↓17) Wake Forest (2-3)—We are so back. As bad as this season has been, Wake is a couple of plays away from 4-1 and has a pretty favorable schedule down the stretch. This season is far from over.

14. (↓12) Stanford (2-3)—The Cardinal got smacked by VT, but they do have a conference road win over Syracuse, so maybe they can get back on track. Troy Taylor is only in his 2nd season, so I think his seat is probably safe for another year.

Seats getting hot

15. (↓13) NC State (3-3)—Through 6 games, the Wolfpack do not have a single P4 win. Doeren might not last the year if things don’t change.

16. (↓15) UNC (3-3)—That win over Minnesota to start the season is all the Heels have as UNC drops another home game. Personally, I would be shocked if Mack doesn’t retire at the end of the season.

17. (↓16) FSU (1-5)—The Noles are the only team in the conference without multiple wins this season. I don’t know if FSU can afford to fire Norvell after extending him in the offseason, but things are looking grim in Tallahassee.

Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt is not looking past the controversial ACC officiating over the last two weeks, specifically in recent matchups involving the No. 6 Miami Hurricanes.

"The officials have bailed them out in in particular on some reviews, and again, we can't do this conference officiating thing," he said on "The Joel Klatt Show." There's some things in that game that happen, whether it's targeting calls or the review against Virginia Tech..."

Klatts is referring to instances that began in Miami's home win over unranked Virginia Tech last week. After trailing 24-17 in the fourth quarter, star quarterback Cam Ward engineered a 14-point surge to make it 38-34 with 1:57 remaining.

But the Hokies would not go away without a last-minute fight.

Virginia Tech marched down to Miami's 30-yard line with a touchdown needed to pull off the upset. With just three seconds remaining on the clock, the Hokies had one chance at the end zone. Quarterback Kyron Drones connected with receiver Da'Quan Felton in what was originally called a touchdown, but controversially called an incomplete pass, ultimately ending the game in Miami's favor.

How Central NY quietly became a major hub for drone innovation: ‘The value is just unreal good’ (PS; $; Racino)

Tucked away on the second floor of the Syracuse Hancock International Airport lies an office filled with computers and wall-mounted screens showing in real time the comings and goings of nearly every object in the Central New York sky.

A handful of people – some waiting to take off, others for arrivals – sit on benches outside the room’s floor-to-ceiling windows. They’d be forgiven for thinking what they’re seeing inside is some routine aspect of airport operations.

It is not.

What’s happening in that office, one floor above baggage claim, is helping lead the development of a multibillion-dollar national drone industry, which seeks to revolutionize everything from transportation and shipping to safety and security to farming and agriculture to construction and environmental monitoring.

There are screens depicting weather conditions in Syracuse under 400 feet, where drones typically operate. Another shows where drones are flying within five miles of the airport, along with the location of the aircraft’s operator. Another marries that information with real-time commercial flights.

“There’s nobody else doing this,” said Ken Stewart, who oversees the airport-based office of NUAIR, a nonprofit helping to shepherd the future of Central New York’s drone industry. “This is a very unique place.”

Syracuse Lions Club finds unexpected new venue for big event after sudden hotel closing (PS; $; Cazentre)

A local service organization that lost the venue for its 100th anniversary gala when the Crowne Plaza hotel closed abruptly last week has found a new place to party.

The Syracuse Host Lions Club will now hold its anniversary event on Oct. 26 in the event space at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park.

It was a quick fix for a situation that created a sudden dilemma just a week ago. The club, the oldest Lions organization in Central New York, had planned a big celebration at the hotel, with a multi-course dinner, a 17-piece band and guest speakers Jim and Juli Boeheim.

Last Wednesday, the hotel announced all operations were shut down and future bookings were cancelled. Some staffers were notified on their way into work Wednesday.

The Lions club was “blessed” to find a solution so fast, club president Douglas Russell said. “Thanks to a lot of very nice people, it all worked out.”
