Welcome to National App Day!
Chances are high that you have a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch, and that means you likely use apps on a daily basis as well. An "app" is short for "software application," which is a type of computer program. Today an app usually refers to those used on mobile devices, but it initially referred to those on desktop computers as well. Apps became common on cell phones after phones were equipped with internet capability, touchscreens, and processing chips. They gained prominence with the release of Apple's iPhone in 2007. The Apple OS 2.0, released in 2008, had about 500 apps. The American Dialect Society made "app" their word of the year in 2010, and the popularity of apps continued to increase during the following years. Today there are about 2 million apps on the Android and Apple platforms, and thousands of new apps come out every day. Apps have changed how we live, transforming work and leisure. New jobs and companies have stemmed from them, and they have shifted culture and promoted creativity and innovation. They are celebrated today because of their importance in this regard.

An Unmatched Look At Syracuse Football's 2025 Recruiting Class (theforkball.com; Malloy)
Fran Brown is already living up to his status as the nation’s top recruiter. In his first complete recruiting cycle, Brown has locked in 34 players in Syracuse Football’s 2025 recruiting class.
This is four more than the next-highest team in the nation.
Brown also finished his first season sporting a healthy (9-3) record which should bring many great players to the program.
Below are a few samples of players ready to bring their talents to the Orange in the 2025 season.
Syracuse Football’s 2025 Recruiting Class
Luke Carney– QB: Dallas Christian School (TX)Carney is the program-changing quarterback in Syracuse Football’s 2025 Recruiting class that the program hopes him to be as he arrives on campus.
The 6′ 2″, 205 lb. dual threat can make all the accurate throws with his strong arm talent and has developed into a mature leader.
He also has wheels, as he can run with his legs and extend them on plays by gaining that physical, tough yard to pick up first downs.
Carney had offers from fellow ACC schools in California, Georgia Tech, and Louisville.
But he ultimately put his Texan Christian faith into Brown’s vision of winning the ACC and National Championships.
Carney played in good competition in the football state of Texas.
If Syracuse doesn’t choose another transfer portal option, Carney could start as a true freshman quarterback in week 1 vs. Tennessee next season.
Darien Williams– WR: Christian Brothers Academy (NY)
Williams played high school ball at the local football power Christian Brothers Academy and is among NY state’s top prospects.
His ten scholarship offers included power four brands: Boston College, Penn State, and Pittsburgh. But his heart told him to stay home and commit to Syracuse.

Syracuse football has landed a commitment from 2026 Melbourne (FL) Central Catholic offensive lineman Javeion Cooper. The 6-4, 295 pounder visited for the Orange's win over Miami on Saturday. He chose Syracuse over offers from Florida State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and others.
"I picked them because I just love the commitment that all the players have," Cooper said. "Just I feel like coach Fran is a coach I need to be under."
Taking in Syracuse's win over the Hurricanes certainly did not hurt either.
"The game was overall crazy," Cooper said. "The atmosphere is a place I would love to play."
Cooper is the fourth player to commit to Syracuse in its 2026 class joining running back D'Antae Sheffey, athlete Maurice Medley and defensive back Jaxson Gates. Syracuse also has two commitments in its 2027 class in quarterback Justin Dixon and athlete Tank White.
Syracuse's 2025 class is now 34 players deep, the most in the nation. It includes wide receiver Darien Williams out of Christian Brothers Academy in New York, defensive back Javon Lawrence out of North Rockland High in New York, offensive lineman Byron Washington out of DeSoto High in Texas, defensive back Jordan Gibbs out of Longwood High in New York, two-way lineman Jaylan Pray out of Brunswick School in Connecticut, quarterback Luke Carney out of Dallas Christian School in Texas, offensive lineman Matthew Hawn out of Christian Brothers Academy in New York, wide receiver Julian McFadden out of LeSalle College High in Pennsylvania, running back Malachi Coleman out of Fleming High in Virginia, offensive lineman Kardiear Shepherd out of Cicero North Syracuse High in New York, wide receiver Terrell Wilfong out of West Orange High in New Jersey, defensive lineman Haleem Muhammad out of Pennington School in New Jersey, athlete Ziyyon Bredell out of Lincoln High in Pennsylvania, wide receiver Daunte Bacheyie out of Christian Brothers Academy in New York, linebacker Antoine Deslauriers out of Nacoochee School in Georgia, offensive lineman Skylar Harvey out of Archbishop Curley in Maryland, tight end Wyatt Bowman out of Georgetown Prep in Maryland, defensive lineman Quante Gillians out of Aquinas Institute in Rochester, defensive back Rayshon Andrews out of Avon Old Farms in Connecticut, offensive lineman Djoni Scatliffe out of East River High School in Florida, offensive lineman Kahlil Stewart out of St. Joseph's Prep in Pennsylvania, defensive lineman Eric Thomas out of East Lee County High in Florida, quarterback/athlete Rich Belin out of Cardinal Hayes High in New York, defensive lineman Nathan Nyandoro out of Vanier College in Canada, athlete Gabe Daniels out of Greater Atlanta Christian in Georgia, defensive lineman Elijah Crawford out of McDonogh School in Maryland, offensive lineman Jayden Mann out of Cardinal Hayes in New York, defensive back Demetres Samuel Jr. out of Heritage High in Florida, Canadian defensive lineman Nissi Ogbebor, defensive back Davion Kerr out of St. Thomas More in Connecticut, edge Deangelo Thompson out of Northwestern High in Florida, defensive back Kaylib Singleton out of Oakleaf High in Florida, linebacker Trey Dudley out of Briar Woods High in Virginia and wide receiver Darius Johnson out of Northwestern High in Florida.

Syracuse Football: 4-star college transfers who are planning to visit the Orange (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football coaches are set to host a variety of college transfers on visits, according to social media posts and reports.
Per the NCAA, the transfer portal opened for business in college football on December 9 and will run through December 28.
The Orange (9-3 overall), ranked No. 21 in the latest College Football Playoff top 25, is preparing to battle Pac-12 Conference member Washington State (8-4 overall) at the Holiday Bowl on December 27 in San Diego.
As 'Cuse first-year head coach Fran Brown, his top-flight staff and their 2024 roster get ready to suit up in the post-season for the third straight year, the Syracuse football staff is also focused on recruiting efforts via the transfer portal.
Here are some college transfers who plan to visit Syracuse football.
National reporter Matt Zenitz of 247Sports and CBS Sports says on his X page that Penn sophomore running back Malachi Hosley plans to visit the 'Cuse. In 247Sports transfer ratings, Hosley is three stars, No. 60 overall and No. 5 at running back.
LSU redshirt freshman quarterback Rickie Collins was to visit Syracuse football on Tuesday, Dec. 10, according to an article from 247Sports analyst Mike McAllister. Per 247Sports' transfer rankings, Collins checks in as three stars, No. 92 overall and No. 13 at quarterback.
Liberty junior quarterback Kaidon Salter is eyeing a visit to the Orange this week, as reported by On3 college sports business and transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos. In transfer ratings from the industry-generated On3 Industry Ranking, Salter is four stars, No. 38 nationally and No. 6 at quarterback.

Ivy League’s leading rusher in 2024 set to visit Syracuse football (PS; Axe)
Former Penn Quakers running back Malachi Hosley is set to visit Syracuse, according to a report from CBS.
Hosley led the Ivy League in all rushing categories including carries (191), yards (1,192), touchdowns (9), yards per carry (6.2), and yards per game (119.2).
His 1,192 yards was the eighth-most by a Penn running back in program history.
Hosley ranked fourth in FCS football in rushing yards per game, 11th in total rushing yards, 13th in all-purpose yards per game (128.10) and 16th in yards per carry.
Hosley’s stand-out season earned him a nomination for the Walter Payton Award, known as the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy at the FCS level of football.
He also earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year and first-team All-Ivy in 2023.
Hosley will have two years of eligibility remaining.
CBS reports he will also visit Virginia, Georgia Tech and Cincinnati.

LSU transfer QB Rickie Collins Jr. to visit Syracuse football on Tuesday (PS; $; Axe)
LSU transfer quarterback Rickie Collins Jr. will be in Syracuse on Tuesday on a recruiting visit, a source confirmed to Syracuse.com.
Collins (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) was a four-star quarterback in the Class of 2023 and named an Elite 11 finalist during his high school days at Woodlawn in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Collins is rated as the 11th-best quarterback available according to On3’s transfer portal ratings.
The news was first reported by 247Sports.
Collins has not played much in his college career, completing all seven of the passes he has thrown, all against lower-level competition.
He has three years of eligibility remaining, which would give SU’s coaching staff plenty of time to develop a player who came to college considered a talented dual-threat prospect.
Syracuse coach Fran Brown said on Monday that he would be bringing in transfer quarterbacks for visits. Liberty quarterback Kaiden Salter will also visit Syracuse this week, according to reports.

Long Island QB Heads to Syracuse for Football AND Lacrosse (youtube; video; Chandler)
Joseph Filardi had already committed to play college lacrosse at Syracuse as a highly-touted recruit; it just seemed logical to join the Orange football program, too. Filardi has been one of the best high school quarterbacks in New York for the last two years at Half Hollow Hills West. College football runs in the family, too. His dad (and head coach) Gerald Filardi was a linebacker at Penn State in the 1990s.

Kyle McCord & Fran Brown TRANSFORMED Syracuse Football + Future Outlook | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Orange Football Quarterback Kyle McCord was named 2nd team All-ACC for his record setting year with Syracuse. It's safe to say he was better than the 11th best QB in the conference, which is where Tyler Budge (CFBudge) had him in the preseason. Fran Brown also coached better than the 14th best in the ACC. Syracuse Football certainly needs a QB this offseason, and Kaidon Salter + Rickie Collins could be a perfect duo. Plus, the Orange need to focus on defense, especially with Marcellus Barnes now in the transfer portal.
Jackson Holzer brings back Tyler Budge to discuss his Syracuse preseason takes and future outlook on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse football: how’d we do on our 2024 season projections (TNIAAM; Wall)
With the Syracuse Orange bowl matchup set, let’s look back at our season predictions. We had one staff member take home the #NunesBucks this year so congrats to Mike.
Mike got the overall and ACC records correct- even if he missed all the losses. Also nailed the comment about the talent at the skill positions.Mike: 9-3, 5-3, Pop Tarts Bowl vs Iowa State Cyclones
I am a bold one with this prediction but with all the abysmal injuries the past two years, SU is due to have a year where more things go right than not. The biggest concern is, as always, the o-line, but for once I’m somewhat confident that the depth there will hold up. There is such an abundance of talent in the skill positions that the Orange offense should keep pace with just about anyone in the ACC. Losses are to NC State, VT, and Cal, which will set up a showdown with a Big 12 sleeper team in Orlando.
Also congrats to commenters: allorange, forsu and ElCuseO for correctly nailing 9-3 in the predictions piece lined above.
Dom takes 2nd place because he nailed the ACC record and was the only one to call a loss to Pitt...this probably doesn’t take away the sting of Miami fumbling their CFP chances.
Kevin: 8-4, 4-4, Pop Tarts Bowl vs Arizona Wildcats
I’ve gone back and forth between 7 and 8 wins, but I’m buying the talent upgrade for the Orange. I think Kyle McCord will be better than many outside of Syracuse think and that will give the offense enough juice to win 8 games. My losses are NC State, Virginia Tech, California and Miami which would mean a really bumpy November, but overall enough to send Syracuse back to Orlando to face Dino Babers and the Wildcats...sure no one expects Arizona to do this well, but let’s inject the Pop-Tarts with a little spice?
Dom: 8-4, 5-3, Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl vs Kansas Jayhawks
Like Kevin, I mulled between 7 and 8 wins. But I picked the 8-4 prediction to write about for a reason. There’s a lot going in favor of the Orange after a productive offseason. My logic is this: after getting six wins last year of all years, 8 wins again feels optimistic and not super unrealistic. I’ve got Syracuse going above-.500 against the ACC for the first time since 2018; losses penciled in are UNLV, NC State, Pitt and Miami. The Orange will head down to the Lone Star State against Kansas; the Jayhawks can’t escape us in football forever.
Carson: 8-4, 4-4, Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl vs Arizona Wildcats
I think 8-4 is extremely reasonable with this group. My losses are Georgia Tech, UNLV, NC State, and Miami. As I mentioned in my 9-3 prediction, I think Syracuse will get better as the season progresses and instead will trip earlier in the year. Hence the early losses to GT, UNLV, and NC State the week after. 4-4 against the ACC seems fitting. Dom brought up a great figure - Syracuse has not gone above 500 against the ACC since 2018 - and I think that continues. Not that I don’t believe in Fran Brown, I do, I think this year will be a bit of a learning curve for the 31st Head Football Coach of the Syracuse Orange.
The most #DisloyalIdiots this year and we’ll be taking suggestions on which hat Steve should eat.
...Max: 7-5, 4-4, Pop-Tarts Bowl vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
I’m standing behind my record and game-by-game predictions from last week. The Georgia Tech game in Week 2 is an excellent early season test and will be a resumé booster for the Orange after a big home win. One downside with a new slew of coaches and players is the unknown chemistry between them. There will be some bumps in the road, especially on the October road trip against UNLV, NC State and Pitt, but I’m comfortable setting seven wins as SU’s floor.
Steve: 7-5, 4-4, Pop-Tarts Bowl vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys
I’m still too tepid on this team. They have the talent to be better, they have the ability to hit that 9-win plateau, possibly 10, and the absolute floor is at 6-6, but I’m going to hedge my bets on the season and say 7-5. The Orange got better across the board, and a new staff to boot, but was the talent upgrade and influx of quality underclassmen enough to move the needle as the rest of the ACC also brought in talent? I’m hoping to eat my hat on this one and it be 8 or 9 wins, but can’t in good faith throw it out there until I see product on the field.
2 childhood friends' incredible journey from Pop Warner to Syracuse University: ‘This is where I want to be’ (PS; Pignatello)
Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kardiear Shepherd and Anthony Johnson have talked about playing together at their hometown university ever since they first met in Pop Warner football when they were 7 years old.
The hulking offensive tackle and the lightning-fast running back were stars on the sectional runner-up. Next year, they’ll be teaming up again at Syracuse University.
Shepherd signed a full scholarship on national signing day on Dec. 4, and Johnson will be joining him as a preferred walk-on.
Shepherd’s father, Rashaad Shepherd, remembers taking the boys to the football field and running drills with them a decade ago.
“Then, I just told them to keep working hard and anything’s possible. Not expecting them to both go and play at the next level, you know what I mean,” Rashaad said, laughing. “As a parent, you don’t want to spoil your kid’s dreams, you want to encourage them. To see it unfolding now, it’s exciting.”
The duo grew up boxing together and playing pickup basketball. On the football field, they’d compete over who could run over who. And they live just around the corner from each other – when Shepherd hosted Thanksgiving two weeks ago, Johnson was there.
“We always wanted to go to school together, but we just didn’t know where we were going to go to school, so I was just wondering,” Shepherd said. “And then when I got the offer from Syracuse, I was like ‘You can get an offer too, or you can get something.’ That’s when Fran (Brown) hit him and he saw what stats he was putting up, and the rest is history.”

Syracuse head coach Fran Brown isn't rooting for Clemson in the CFP (rubbingtherock.com; Conner)
Over the past two weeks, Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown has become a hero to Clemson fans. That's because by upsetting Miami on November 30th, his team put the Tigers in the ACC Championship Game where the Tigers eventually clinched a birth in the College Football Playoff.
After the Orange upset the Hurricanes, as fans stormed the field in Syracuse, a fired-up Brown gave a postgame shoutout to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
"Hey Dabo Swinney. Congrats, I got you in baby," Brown said while being interviewed on ESPN.
On December 4th, Swinney was asked if he sent anything to Brown as a thank you and Swinney took it a step further. He said that if Clemson were to win the National Championship, he'd have Brown at the parade to ride in the same car as him.
x.com
twitter.com
Then, days later as Clemson celebrated its ACC Championship on the field, Swinney returned the love. In the postgame celebration, Swinney thanked Brown for giving Clemson its opportunity.
Thus, the media has picked up on the mutual admiration that the two coaches have for one another. And Tuesday, as Brown was meeting with the press about his team's selection to the Holiday Bowl to play Washington State, he was asked about his relationship with Swinney.
"He cool," Brown said. "He's a great man. He's won some national championships. He's where I've been at. He's a faith-driven man such as myself so I will always respect that and anyone that's God-fearing, they're definitely a friend of mine cause you understand and know that we have to love all those and look [out] for each other.

How the ACC's Success Initiative Rewards Winners (RX; HM)
How the ACC's Success Initiative Rewards Winners
From the Post and Courier article "A win over SMU could be worth $8 million to Clemson.", Jon Blau explains how the ACC's new "success initiative" works.
...in years past Clemson shared its postseason earnings with fellow conference members, the ACC's newly instituted "success initiative" will keep CFP bonuses with schools that make the 12-team field.
Just making a first-round game would bring in $4 million, plus another $4 million if the Tigers get a bye and open in the quarterfinals. If Dabo Swinney's wildest dreams come true, Clemson's total payout could be $20 million because the national semifinal and final games award $6 million apiece.
The author adds
the success initiative, which sets aside a pot of money to reward CFP top 25 finishes and bowl appearances but also creates a "pass through" that sends CFP bonuses to the schools that earn them.
Based on that information, I put together this simple table of CFP bonuses:
$4 million for CFP 1st-round game
$4 million for CFP 1st-round bye
or CFP 2nd-round game
$6 million for CFP semi-final game
$6 million for CFP championship game
------------------------------------
$20 million maximum
This is essentially "eat what you kill." Of course, this only applies to ACC football success. It's my understanding that there is a similar arrangement to reward success in men's basketball - the other "money sport".

Upon Further Review: Did the CFP Get it Right for 2024?
Good morning, ACC football fans! If you've been on "X" at all, you've no doubt seen complaints from Alabama fans about how unfair it is that they were left out of the College Football Playoffs this year. Sound familiar? However, it begs the question: do they have a point, or are they just whining? Let's take another look, this time focusing on team records against power opponents...
Records of Playoff Teams, and 2 that felt snubbed
Seed | Playoff Team | Conf. | ALL | OOC | P5 OOC opponents | vs P5 | P5 Win% |
1 | Oregon | 9(10)-0 | 13-0 | 3-0 | Boise St, Oregon St (+CCG) | 12-0 | 1.000 |

5 | 2023 Florida St | 8(9)-0 | 13-0 | 4-0 | LSU, Florida (+CCG) | 11-0 | 1.000 |
Alabama fans are threatening to have their school drop all power OOC games since "strength of schedule" doesn't seem to matter to the CFP... but is that true? One of the least prejudicial ways of evaluating SoS is by looking at team records against all power conference opponents, both in and out of conference.

Micron signs historic deal with feds for $6.1 billion to build chip plants in Central NY, Idaho (PS; Weiner)
Micron Technology and federal officials have agreed to a final deal that will provide the chipmaker with $6.1 billion in grants to build plants in Central New York and Idaho, the White House announced today.
The long-awaited agreement, reached after eight months of negotiations, locks in incentives that Micron needs to start building the first two plants at its planned $100 billion complex at White Pine Commerce Park in Clay.
Micron says it plans to break ground in fall 2025 at the 1,400-acre site off Route 31 in Clay.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said the funding announcement marks “a historic day and historic agreement for Upstate New York and America.”
“This final award locks in the federal investment Micron needs for shovels to be able to hit the ground and create thousands of good-paying jobs here in Upstate New York,” Schumer said.
The federal grants also will subsidize a separate expansion at Micron’s headquarters in Boise, Idaho, where construction has started.
The Commerce Department said Micron will have to meet a series of milestones in Central New York and Idaho before receiving the federal grants, which would be paid out in increments as those milestones are met.

Now that Micron has nailed down billions in federal money, what’s next for Clay project? (PS; $; Coin)
Micron Technology this week cleared one of its biggest hurdles to building a chipmaking plant in Central New York: confirmation of $4.6 billion in grants from the federal government.
Micron plans to break ground in November 2025, but before that the company will need dozens of approvals and permits from agencies ranging from the town of Clay to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
The next major step is finishing the enormous environmental report that will catalog the project’s impacts on everything from air quality to housing. The report must be submitted to the federal and county governments and made available for public review.
Micron is expected to submit the preliminary environmental report on Dec. 20, according to the federal CHIPS office, which oversees the federal review of the project. The same report will be submitted to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency, which leads the local review.

Coming soon to Central New York’s oldest movie theater: Comfier seats (PS; Cazentre)
If you run a theater, one of your top goals is to put more people in the seats. It helps if the seats are comfortable.
And that’s what’s prompting the owners of Central New York’s oldest movie theater to shut down for a few weeks to work on some renovations.
The project at the 106-year-old Manlius Cinema will include comfier seats.
The new seats will be slightly bigger, with more cushions, higher backs and increased legroom, said co-owner Dan Chapman. He and his business partner Joe Ori bought the landmark movie house at 135 E. Seneca St. in 2022.
The renovations will reduce the number of seats, from the current 187 to about 100, Chapman said. But he and Ori hope to make up in quality what they lose in quantity.
“The seats have been sort of the elephant in the room since we took over,” Chapman said. “It’s definitely been the biggest thing we’ve heard about.”
He believes the current seats date back at least to the 1980s.
The new seating will also include a storage rail and cupholders — important features for a a theater that serves draft beer. Chapman and Ori also own the nearby A.W. Wander, a bar and wood-fired pizza place. In addition to in-house concessions, patrons can bring pizza into the theater.

Syracuse University announces plan to build a new full-service hotel near campus (PS; Cazentre)
Syracuse University announced today it plans to build and operate a new full-service hotel near its main campus.
The roughly 200-room hotel, with its own restaurant and event space, is expected to open by the fall of 2027 at the southwest corner of University Avenue and Harrison Street. That’s currently an open-air parking lot on SU-owned property across from the university-owned University Avenue Garage.
The news comes in the wake of the university’s recent decision to convert its 200-room Sheraton University Hotel into a student dorm and its acquisition earlier this year of the Hotel Skyler, a boutique hotel located adjacent to the new hotel space at the corner of Harrison and South Crouse Avenue.
It also comes at a time of other major changes in the hotel room availability near the SU campus. That includes the closing in October of the 279-room Crowne Plaza hotel as it prepares to transition to an apartment building.
