Scott Shafer Reveals How He Sped Up the Orange's Recruiting Process (PS; Carlson)

While the quality of the current recruiting class depends on your perspective, the speed with which Scott Shafer has assembled it is likely unprecedented in Syracuse football history.

With 22 reported verbal commitments from high schoolers in its Class of 2015 entering August, Syracuse ranks among the fastest movers in the country, joining a list that includes Mississippi State, South Carolina, Boston College, Tennessee, Alabama, Western Michigan and Miami.

Joining the top schools in starting quickly was one of Shafer's priorities entering his second recruiting cycle as a head coach, the first in which he's had most of his staff assembled in advance.

"We needed to catch up," Shafer said. "Losing all those coaches hurt us. We wanted to try to speed up the process."

Wall Street Journal Says Scott Shafer is the Chattiest Coach in the ACC (PS; Mink)

Steve Spurrier calls it "talking season," a time when college football coaches drum up optimism for the upcoming season at promotional events such as conference media days and ESPN's "car wash."

And nobody in the ACC did more talking at media days than Syracuse coach Scott Shafer.

The Wall Street Journal reviewed the media day transcripts of the five power conferences to determine which coach was the biggest chatterbox.

Shafer, who begins his second training camp as head coach on Saturday, said 2,075 words during his session. His most frequently uttered word was "guys," which he used 10 times.

Dual Threat Villanova QB John Robertson Might Be the Best QB in the FCS

SU Football 14 in '14: Schedule Leaves Little Room for Error (PS; Axe)

Scott Shafer wasn't biting.

Asked at a recent luncheon with SU fans and clients of SU radio flagship TK99 what game he was looking forward to the most on the 2014 Syracuse football schedule, the Orange head coach stayed on the coach speak path and said the opener against Villanova on August 29 was the game he was looking forward to most.

Fair enough, coach. But no one would blame him if he peeked a little bit down the schedule and raised his eyebrows at what he saw.

Anyway you slice it, the 2014 Syracuse Football schedule will not be an easy road to navigate for a team looking to reach a stated goal of eight wins this season.

NJ DE/TE Jake Pickard Chooses Wisconsin Over Syracuse (PS; Bailey)

Millburn (N.J.) High School defensive end Jake Pickard announced his verbal commitment to Wisconsin on Twitter late Thursday afternoon.

Pickard took an unofficial visit to Syracuse last week, and told NJ.com on Wednesday that he had narrowed down his finalists to SU, UW, Oregon, Virginia, Purdue and Nebraska.

Recent visits to Syracuse and Wisconsin led some pundits to speculate that Pickard was down to just those two schools.

SB Nation Article Says Pickard Chose Wisconsin Over Virginia (buckys5thquarter.com; Rosin)

Wisconsin was always hanging around, looking at Jake Pickard. Still, the Badgers waited to make their offer. Pickard was initially considered as a tight end possibility, but then that option filled upquickly. He waited two months before he received the offer from the Badgers and by then, it was considered to be too late. Virginia swooped in. He was going to be a Cavalier, but he just wanted to make sure that Madison wasn't the place for him.

Class of 2017 Gainesville DE Jordan Riley Interested in Syracuse (gainesville.com; Brockway)

During last week's Friday Night Lights, Florida coaches paid special attention to a young, tall defensive line prospect.

The first thing that stands out about 2017 defensive line recruit Jordan Riley is his height. You can't teach 6-foot-6, which gives Riley the chance to tower over offensive linemen and deflect passes while rushing the quarterback off the edge.

Florida defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin showed Riley some different pass-rushing techniques during agility drills.

Riley already has a scholarship offer to play close to home at North Carolina State. Along with Florida, he's also interested in Alabama, LSU and Syracuse.

Doug Marrone, Tom Coughlin Gives Bills-Giants Hall of Fame Game a Syracuse Feel (PS; Fairburn)

The 2014 Hall of Fame weekend will be quite the display of New York football.

It starts on Saturday night when longtime Bills great Andre Reed will be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with legendary Giants defensive end Michael Strahan. Then, on Sunday night, the Bills and the Giants will kick off the NFL season with the Hall of Fame Game. Meanwhile, both head coaches, Doug Marrone for the Bills and Tom Coughlin for the Giants, played their college football at Syracuse.

"I always admire coach Coughlin," Marrone said. "He helped me out quite a bit when I was the head coach at Syracuse. We've always had a good relationship, and I think the common denominator is that we both went to school there, and we’re in this profession together."

The connection runs a bit deeper than that, though. Coughlin has been a mentor for Marrone.

If the program wants to have a great image, arrange for a photo with all the SU participants along with Brown, Little, Czonka, and Monk. You want something to have recruits see as they walk in the building that would be it.
