Brisley's Back! (And Other Observations From Saturday's Practice (PS; Bailey)
Syracuse H-back Brisly Estime returned to practice on Saturday, wearing pads and stretching with the team before doing calisthenics on the side during the open portion of practice. Estime has been hampered by an ankle sprain suffered on Aug. 8. He tweeted that he ran two miles on a treadmill Friday night.
He worked with freshman quarterback AJ Long (mild shoulder irritation) and redshirt sophomore defensive end Ron Thompson, both in pads, as well as graduate student cornerback Joey Nassib (separated shoulder), who wore a T-shirt and shorts.
Defensive tackles Eric Crume (knee) and Ryan Sloan (arm) both participated fully in the open portion of practice.

Walk On Punter Jakubowski Reportedly Leaves SU Football (dailyorange.com; Dougherty)
Freshman walk-on punter Evan Jakubowski has left the team, At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. reported on Sunday night. Jakubowski was second on the depth chart behind senior Riley Dixon, but is now another player to leave Syracuse before its opener against Villanova on Aug. 29.
Jakubowski told The Daily Orange in April that he considered offers from Missouri and Miami (Ohio) before choosing the Orange. He also said that with Dixon establishing himself as the bonafide starting punter, he was ready to compete for field goals and kickoffs as a freshman.
With Jakubowski leaving, it is expected that freshman Cole Murphy, junior Ryan Norton or senior Alex Hodgkinson will replace him on the depth chart. Jakubowski’s plans for the immediate future have not been reported.

Preseason AP Poll Out: SU Scheduled to Play 3 Top 25 Teams (PS; Mink)
SEC Has 8 Teams in Top 25
The Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll was released Sunday afternoon, and three Syracuse opponents were ranked in it.
Defending national champion Florida State was the overwhelming pick for No. 1, receiving 57 of 60 first-place votes. If the Seminoles are still atop the poll on Oct. 11, it will mark the first time a defending national champion will enter the Carrier Dome ranked No. 1 since Nov. 30, 2002, when Miami (Fla.) defeated the Orange, 49-7.
Clemson, ranked No. 16, and No. 17 Notre Dame are the other two opponents ranked in the poll.

Shafer was nominated by his left tackle, Sean Hickey, and things looked pretty ordinary until the last second.

Commando Robert Welsh Leads an Attack Team at Fort Drum. He Killed Coach Daoust.
SU Football Players Take Their Shots at Coaches in Paintball Game as Fort Drum Stay Ends (PS; Bailey)
Before anyone suited up to take to the paintball course, senior defensive end Rob Welsh took a moment to talk some smack with linebackers coach Clark Lea.
"I've got three guys on my list," Welsh said. "You, Coach Daoust and Coach Hicks."
While it's unclear if Welsh landed pellets on Lea or Hicks, the strength and conditioning coach, there's no question he got Daoust, his positional coach for the last three seasons.
During one of the games that pegged coaches against players, Welsh was laying under a wooden barricade. Daoust, who was positioned behind a wall 10 yards forward, charged, lowered his shoulder and sent the wooden planks flying forward.

Spirited Morning of Paintball Concludes SU's Fort Drum Trip (dailyorange.com; Blum)
Tim Daoust had barricaded himself behind a wooden plank. He lay on the ground, maneuvering his body on all fours as he tried to line up a shot.
He had already taken out Micah Robinson, but once he got up and made his way to the spot Robert Welsh was hiding, the defensive end came out and bombarded his helpless defensive line coach with a slew of paintballs.
“It felt good, I’m not going to lie,” Welsh said. “When he ran over the barricade that I was hiding under, I said it had to be him, so I got up and I saw it was him and I kept shooting. I think I emptied my paintball gun.”
Welsh’s attack was one of many highlights of Syracuse’s final day at Fort Drum. After four days of training and fraternizing with the soldiers on the military base, the players and coaches spent Friday morning playing paintball before heading back to the SU campus.
Teammates stood along a chain-link fence, laughing and yelling whenever a player raised his hands and surrendered after getting hit.

Who's the most important Orange player after Terrel Hunt?
As always, we encourage your comments below and want to hear your thoughts.
Brent Axe
I know this memo comes from the "Department of Obvious," but I am going to say Sean Hickey. He's the piece that allows this offense to be able to move at the breakneck clip they want to in 2014. If he didn't return, that offensive line is still looking for answers and it doesn't matter how fast they want to go or how many weapons Terrel Hunt has surrounding him.
Stephen Bailey
After Terrel Hunt, there is a significant dropoff in who the second-most irreplaceable player is. The loss of Hunt would simply derail the season. None of the backups are close to ready to command the offense. Syracuse wouldn't win more than four games, tops.
Defensively, the linebackers and secondary have enough balance and depth to fill in for any singular injury. And Sean Hickey could feasibly be replaced by Michael Lasker without disaster ensuing.

we call on Joe Giglio of the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
Let's get to it.
1. So, yeah, Year 1 of the Dave Doeren era did not go as well as many intended. What do you think were the three biggest issues with last year's team, and do you think any of these problems are still lingering?
Giglio: 1. They couldn't tackle. As far as football problems go, it doesn't get much worse. N.C. State allowed an average of 5.68 yards per carry in ACC play, by far (the only team in the 5.0s) the most in the conference.
You saw this in the loss to Syracuse in Raleigh. The Orange ran for a season-high 362 yards against the Wolfpack and averaged an obscene 9.05 yards per carry.

Six ACC Assistant Coaches Who Will Eventually Have a Program of Their Own (PS; Stevens)
...
Shane Beamer, Virginia Tech associate head coach: There aren't many assistants who possess the name recognition Beamer does. Of course, that's largely a function of the exceptional 27-year run his father Frank has enjoyed in Blacksburg.
Nonetheless, Shane Beamer has tested his recruiting chops at Mississippi State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech, and does have coordinator experience while working with South Carolina's special teams. If his dad's eventual exit is smooth — never a sure thing with living legends — then the 37-year-old Beamer will at least be a candidate to take over the Hokies for a stint of his own.
Bud Foster, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator: He's entering his 20th season running the Hokies' defense, and seems like a perennial candidate on the periphery of many jobs. Foster's acumen is unquestioned, and he might be the second-most important figure in the rise of Virginia Tech's program over the last quarter-century.
He's older than everyone else on this list, and might not be as splashy a choice as a young hotshot play-caller on offense. But the man knows defense, and that's worth more than many will admit.
Garrick McGee, Louisville offensive coordinator: Yes, he just was a head coach, going 5-19 over two seasons at UAB. Then again, the Blazers have slogged through nine consecutive losing seasons and play at ancient Legion Field. It was probably a wise career choice to go back to being a coordinator under Bobby Petrino.

Ryan Nassib Leads Giants to Comeback Victory Over Colts (PS; AP)
Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks showed the Giants starters what they were missing on Saturday night.
Then, Ryan Nassib showed him up. The second-year quarterback rallied the New York Giants for two touchdowns in the final four minutes.
The second came on a 6-yard TD pass to Corey Washington with 55 seconds to go to give New York an improbable 27-26 preseason victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Giants had trailed 26-0 with 14:46 to play.
Indy (0-2) had a chance to win it, but Pat McAfee missed a 64-yard field goal wide left in the final seconds.
Nassib rescued the Giants (3-0) from what had been a dismal night.
