Syracuse Focused on Tackling During Bye Week (AP; Kekis)

The punch is forgotten. The missed tackles, not so much for Syracuse coach Scott Shafer.

With a bye week to get an ugly, one-point, double-overtime victory over Villanova and quarterback Terrel Hunt's ejection-causing jab safely in the rearview mirror, Shafer has honed in on an irritating issue that surfaced in the season-opener against the Wildcats.

"I just want us to do a better job tackling in space, gang-tackling on defense, just being focused and locked in to one play at a time," Shafer said Tuesday as he prepared for a road game against Central Michigan (2-0) of the Mid-American Conference. "Those are the things we focused most on."

Syracuse nearly lost to FCS power Villanova in regulation after Hunt threw a punch at a defender and was kicked out of the game late in the first half. A botched 25-yard field goal by Villanova in the final seconds of regulation left the game tied and gave the Orange another chance, and when the Wildcats went for a two-point conversion in the second overtime and failed, Syracuse had a 27-26 victory.

Someone Needs to Have a Road House Conversation with Terrel Hunt (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Terrel Hunt hasn't done the best job is handling The Punch Heard Round The Dome.

For a few days after the game, a lone tweet sat atop his Twitterfeed, whining about the reaction his ejection got rather than taking responsibility for his actions. Eventually, a straight-forward apology followed a few days later and the whole issue appeared to be over.

At a media run-through on Tuesday leading up to Syracuse's game against the Central Michigan Chippewas this Saturday, Hunt was asked his goals for the game:

"I just want to win. I want to stay in the game all four quarters and win. That’s it."

A worthy goal for sure. Asked why he threw the punch...

"No reason. I got upset and got out of my character. Shouldn’t have did it, but it happens."

ACC hits the road vs. non-Power 5 (ESPN: Adelson)

The ACC schedule this weekend should come with some theme music.

"On the road again ... "

Nobody travels to quite as many nonconference road games as the ACC, most especially road games against non-Power 5 opponents. Four are on the docket for this weekend when Syracuse plays at Central Michigan; Pitt goes to FIU; NC State travels to USF and Wake Forest hightails it across the country to Utah State.

In all, the ACC has 11 road games this season against non-Power 5 opponents, twice as many as the next closest power conference. By comparison, the SEC plays just three road games against non-Power 5 opponents.

This all begs the all-important question: Why?

The answer: It's complicated...

Scott Shafer is up on the ACC coaches' teleconference. Says CMU runs well out of two-back sets.

Shafer said Josh Parris and Adly Enoicy are progressing well, but will not play against Central Michigan. No set timetable.

That's it from Shafer for today.

Scott Shafer's weekly appearance on ACC Teleconference is coming up shortly. Follow along here.

Shafer's biggest concern about Central Michigan is their ability to run the ball well.

Shafer was asked about Sam Rodgers' leadership. He is very proud of his long-snapper captain.

Syracuse's injured wide receivers Josh Parris and Adly Enoicy will NOT play against CM Saturday. Shafer says they're progressing.

Scott Shafer is joining the ACC coaches' teleconference right now.

Shafer on CMU: "They've had a lot of success running that football."

Shafer: "We need to see improvement across the board. That's been our focus all week."

Shafer on Josh Parris & Adly Enoicy: "They're both doing well, but we have not set a timeline on either of those guys." Won't play vs. CMU.

Shafer on early bye week: "It is what it is. You can't change it. You got to live with it."

Shafer on long snapper/captain Sam Rodgers: “(He'll) ... be doing more hiring than getting hired in a very short time once he leaves here.”

So, will Parris and Enoicy play?
