Scott Shafer: 'We Need to See Improvement Across the Board'; Here are Three Areas (PS; Mink)
Syracuse is not quite hitting the reset button on the 2014 season when it travels to Central Michigan this weekend for its first road contest of the year.
But it has spent the last two weeks trying to quickly eviscerate the habits that led to a too-close-for-comfort 27-26 double-overtime victory against FCS Villanova.
"If it's on tape, it's real," head coach Scott Shafer said this week, looking past any plausible excuse, including the fact his starting quarterback got ejected in the second quarter for throwing a punch.
"We're working on making that snapshot look the way we want it to at Central Michigan."

CMU RB Thomas Rawls Celebrates a TD Against Purdue
What You Need to Know About Central Michigan (PS; Stevens)
Best player
WR Titus Davis
One of the best deep threats in the Mid-American Conference, Davis hauled in 61 catches for 1,109 yards and eight touchdowns a season ago. But a sprained knee cost him much of Central Michigan's opener against Chattanooga, and Davis did not play in Saturday's 38-17 defeat of Purdue.
Coach Dan Enos insisted last week Davis was "day to day," but it's worth noting the Chippewas have survived without him at times over the last three seasons. In addition to last week against Purdue, Central Michigan also won when Davis was suspended for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in 2012 and missed last year's upset triumph at Ohio with an injury.
Other top players
LB Justin Cherocci: The senior tackling machine is a former walk-on. Last year, he had 121 tackles (5.5 for loss) for the Chippewas, and has already made 19 stops through two games this year.
G Andy Phillips: An anchor on the left side of Central Michigan's line, Phillips has made 32 consecutive starts and is one of the MAC's steadiest linemen.
TB Thomas Rawls: Originally a Central Michigan recruiting target before signing with Michigan, Rawls is a graduate student who has made an immediate difference for the Chippewas. In two games, he has 56 carries for 278 yards and three touchdowns
QB Cooper Rush: The sophomore took over as the starter in the third game last season and has led the Chippewas to a 7-5 record since then. Rush is 26 of 42 for 345 yards, four touchdowns and one interception this season.

CMU Star WR Titus Davis, Most Talented Player in MAC, Questionable for Syracuse Game (9and10news.com; Johnson)
Central Michigan football is starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2002. That is also the last time this football program started the season 3-0.
The Mike DeBord team finished the season 4-8.
Expect the 2014 Chippewas to finish the season better because CMU Football Radio Analyst Brock Gutierrez thinks this team has a depth of talent.
For example, CMU is now 4-0 without star wide receiver Titus Davis in the lineup. Gutierrez thinks Davis is not only the best player on CMU's team but very likely the most talented player in the Mid-American Conference.
"He's got great straight line speed, great hands, a very physical, big player, he'll definitely play on Sundays," Gutierrez said. "Having him get hurt in that first game against Tennessee-Chattanooga was a big blow to this offense, but one thing about Central's offense is they have a very deep group of wide receivers. It hurts to have him out, I'd like to see him get fully healthy before the MAC schedule, maybe sit out this game against Syracuse and maybe come back in a couple weeks against Toledo, that's where he's most needed is down the MAC stretch."Davis is still questionable for Saturday's noon kickoff at Kelly Shorts Stadium against Syracuse. ...

...
BIG 10 ROUT: When Central Michigan rolled into West Lafayette to play Purdue, it was already without wide receiver and 2013 MVP Titus Davis, who was forced out with a sprain knee. In the opening quarter, the Chippewas also lost kicker Ron Coluzzi to a concussion. None of that prevented Central Michigan from handily defeating the Boilermakers on the road to win their second game in three seasons against a Big 10 opponent (they also defeated Iowa on the road in 2012). The Chippewas benefited from a flurry of Purdue mistakes, and capitalized each time for a 38-17 pummeling. CMU’s Brandon Greer returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first drive, and Purdue’s Frankie Williams was ejected from the game for a vicious hit on a defenseless receiver in the first half. On the afternoon, the Boilermakers turned the ball over three times, and were flagged seven times for 69 yards.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS: While Purdue was stumbling, Central Michigan received stellar play from QB Cooper Rush (11-for-16 passing for 172 yards and two TDs) and back Thomas Rawls (155 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries). Rush hooked up with Anthony Rice for a 65-yard strike on CMU’s first possession to put the Chippewas out front 14-0, and then Rawls would punch it into the end zone midway through the second quarter to give CMU a 21-7 lead. Rawls and Rush would combine for two more touchdowns as Central Michigan improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2002 season.
