Shafer on Howard: 'We Have Decided to Part Ways' (DO; Dougherty)
Naesean Howard is no longer on the Syracuse football team, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer confirmed in a statement released Tuesday night. Nate Mink of The Post-Standard was the first to report Howard’s status.
“We have decided to part ways,” Shafer said of Howard in the statement. “We wish Naesean all the best in the future.”
Howard, a two-way player at nearby West Genesee (New York) High School, was the first to commit to Syracuse in the Class of 2014. He did so as a running back, but entered training camp as a safety. During training camp, Howard was suspended from the team for missing curfew and did not attend the Orange’s trip to Fort Drum.

Is Georgia Tech for Real? (espn.com; Adelson)
The stats do not scream perfect team! But through four games, Georgia Tech has an unblemished record, emerging as one of the big surprises in the ACC through the first month.
Still, it is hard to get a gauge on just how good these Jackets are, considering how they have gotten to 4-0. They looked uninspired in a win over Wofford. They trailed early to Tulane. They needed a last-ditch rally to beat Georgia Southern. And they needed a last-second field goal to beat Virginia Tech.
Are they lucky or good?
We may have an answer Saturday, when the Jackets face Miami in a crucial Coastal Division game. Their overall defensive performance to date may not inspire much confidence, but a big reason Georgia Tech has remained undefeated has been its ability to make game-changing plays.
All seven Georgia Tech takeaways have resulted in points. In each of Georgia Tech’s last two games, the Jackets have gone on game-winning drives thanks to takeaways. Down 38-35 with Georgia Southern driving to the Jackets’ 24 in the closing minutes, Jamal Golden forced a fumble that KeShun Freeman recovered.

WEEK SIX ACC POWER RATINGS
1. (1 last week) Florida State (4-0) – The Seminoles keep looking like a team primed to lose a game. But who's going to beat them? I need a name.
2. (2) Clemson (2-2) – The Tigers warm up for Louisville's first visit on Oct. 11 with a home game against North Carolina State Saturday. If you're really number two, you beat N.C. State.
3. (6) Georgia Tech (4-0) – Back-to-back home games with Miami and Duke will tell us if the Yellow Jackets can contend for the Coastal Division title. Color me doubtful.
4. (5) North Carolina State (4-1) – The Wolfpack were outscored 49-17 in the final three quarters of their loss to Florida State.
5. (7) Virginia (3-2) – Keep an eye on the Cavaliers. The only teams that have beaten Virginia are unbeaten (UCLA and BYU).
6. (8) Louisville (4-1) – When you look at the back end of the schedule, the Cards need to win at Syracuse Friday night.
7. (12) Miami (3-2) – The Hurricanes' game at Georgia Tech will identify one contender for the Coastal title – and help shape the future of Al Golden.
8. (3) Duke (4-1) – The Blue Devils have a week to regroup – and they need it after scoring only 10 points in a loss to Miami.
9. (4) Boston College (3-2) – More telling about the Eagles – a win over USC or home losses to Pitt and Colorado State? I think you know the answer.
10. (11) Virginia Tech (3-2) – North Carolina is the first of seven straight conference games for the Hokies.
11. (9) Pittsburgh (3-2) – Back-to-back home losses to Iowa and Akron? I thought the Panthers got rid of Dave Wannstedt.
12. (13) Syracuse (2-2) – The Orange are the same program they were in the Big East – just another mid-pack team.
