Shafer Discusses Quarterback Approach in Wake of Hunt Injury (DO; D'Abbraccio)

Just a few hours after Terrel Hunt’s prognosis was announced, SU Athletics published a video interview with Orange All-Access host Matt Park in which Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer discussed the Orange’s approach at quarterback in preparing for No. 1 Florida State on Saturday.

Hunt will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a fractured fibula, suffered in the Orange’s 28-6 loss to Louisville on Friday night. Sophomore Austin Wilson filled in for him, as he did after Hunt’s ejection against Villanova, while reserve quarterbacks Mitch Kimble and AJ Long watched from the sideline.

“I just feel so bad for the young man,” Shafer said of Hunt, “… But now we’re going to move forward this week and try to develop a plan for Austin and AJ and have Mitch ready to go as well.

“… When I look at it, it’s going to be less of a competition as to which guy does better this week during practice. Let’s come up with a plan. If we choose to use two guys, let’s use two guys and give them pieces of the game plan … In an ideal world, you’d love to have one quarterback who can do all those things. But right now the reality is we don’t want to put that weight on any singular player.”

Syracuse Hurting After 3rd Straight Loss (AP; Kekis)

Riding a three-game losing streak, Syracuse is hurting big-time and its schedule is no friend.

Starting quarterback Terrel Hunt suffered a broken calf bone late in Friday night's 28-6 home loss to Louisville in Syracuse's Atlantic Coast Conference opener and is out 4-6 weeks. Now the reeling Orange (2-3, 0-1 ACC) face top-ranked Florida State (5-0, 3-0) at home on Saturday.

At least the Syracuse offense will have a new look with a different quarterback over center — Austin Wilson and AJ Long, a freshman who enrolled in January, are listed on the depth chart — and Tim Lester calling the shots. Lester was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator on Monday, replacing George McDonald, who was retained and will coach the receivers.

Syracuse Loses QB, Makes Changes to Coaching Staff (cbssports.com; Fornelli)

It appears that Syracuse will be heading into its game against Florida State with a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator.

Coach Scott Schafer issued a release Monday announcing that the team was making a change to its coaching staff and that quarterback Terrel Hunt will miss 4-6 with a fractured leg suffered in the team's loss to Louisville.

Austin Wilson is expected to replace Hunt at quarterback, and he'll be running the plays called by new offensive coordinator Tim Lester. Lester replaces George McDonald, who had been running the offense but will now only coach the team's receivers.

Odds are that Hunt's absence will have the bigger impact on Syracuse's offensive performance, but if there's any good news it's that Wilson has received playing time this year. He replaced Hunt against Louisville and had to fill in when Hunt was ejected from Syracuse's opener against Villanova for throwing a punch.

2qb's very predictable which one does what ---not a good idea
Yeah, I said that yesterday. Once they figure it out...

But, it's all blocking and tackling, right? ;)

you assume the game plan is that simple. as long as they both have run pass options it can work. ND ran one play and we couldnt stop it.

Interesting factoid. Saturday will make the first time Syracuse football has faced a reigning Heisman Trophy winner.
not really that surprising , how many non seniors won until the last 10-20 years? from 1963-2000 only 5 non seniors. even after that you only had a few chances as several others left early.

Scott Shafer begins his weekly teleconference in a few minutes. This should be an interesting one. Hang around for updates.

Shafer said staff is in process of selecting QB plan for FSU. Didn't show hand on any offensive shift with Lester as OC, either.

Shafer says AJ Long has improved his passing efficiency gradually since arriving.

Shafer on McDonald/Lester: "The two of them are very close and are men of high character who just want to win a game."

Shafer says injury protocol starts with Denny Kellington and staff diagnosing on field, then further assessment off-field mid game.

Shafer said the medical staff thought Terrel Hunt had a bad bruise after being kicked in the shin vs. Louisville. That was post initial hit.

Shafer said the staff learned there was a fracture postgame.

Shafer says nothing changed in perspective after Louisville game RE: McDonald. Just a decision to better the team.

Shafer said all injuries (Broyld, Estime, Foy, Moore, Morgan) are day-to-day. Pointed to the injury report that comes out Thursday.

Shafer said the McDonald/Lester was a day-to-day type decision. Not something that was preconceived.

Shafer said the OC swap decision was solely his. No push from administration.

Shafer doesn't want to speak of scout-team QB. Would guess it's Long or Kimble based on Jameis Winston's skill set.

All in all, not much from Shafer on potential Lester/McDonald decision, offensive tweaks or QB situation. Keeping cards in hand for FSU.

Shafer on attitude: The team's attitude has been good, they just put their helmets and go to work. I think they're excited about opportunity

Shafer calls Florida State one of the best teams in the last 10 years.

Shafer on challenge: It'll be a big task. We have three (QBs) I believe in. We have some good thoughts on how we want to head in.

Shafer on changes on offense: You'll find out Saturday.

Shafer on QBs: Austin has a big arm, has done nice job learning offense. AJ has competed well, is good athlete. Kimble has a lot of ability.

Shafer on evaluating injuries: I rely on insights of medical staff to tell me if a young man is ready to go.

Shafer on blame for offense: Difficult situation. George is unselfish, diligent and hard-working. I'm sure there's natural frustration.

Shafer on McDonald: He just put his head down, went to work and started coaching those kids. I'm fortunate to have him on my staff.

Shafer on Wayne Williams: He was out of shape, he'll be first to admit that. He went to work. Coach Hicks did a great with plan.

Shafer on Williams: It wasn't just weight-training but life habits and discipline. Wayne did great job following program.

Shafer on Williams: He's accelerated his ability to play and play longer. He's giving us good reps on tape. Playing much longer, harder.

Shafer on McDonald: Accounts for year and Louisville game. It's a day-by-day. Not preconceived a long time ago. It was in our interest.

Shafer on McDonald: To be redundant on the thing, when I have to make a difficult decision I look at it from all different vantage points.

Shafer on McDonald: It was in best interest of the team (that's the party line for today).

Shafer on McDonald decision: It was totally mine and I own it.

Shafer on AJ Long: If I gave you too much intel you'd figure out the plan for Saturday. It's in our best interest not to reveal those things

i would be more concerned re the jersey recruits than the others. we need jersey guys and are just starting to get back there. ru beats a bad michigan team but remain 5-1 and should have beaten psu. no one cares how bad those two teams are,and they have brand and name recognition and ru beat one of them. say what you will, they have garnered more positive press than our lowly performances. remember shady made living beating nobodies, and the recruits bought into it as did the press. when will we learn. plus their coach remains on topic, and does not discuss world events in a football presser---which was mind boggling

Lester says on @ESPNSYRACUSE that Shafer called him Saturday at home w/family and informed him of change. "I came in to work immediately."

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 16m16 minutes ago
Lester on change in workflow: "There's always one person in the room who has to make the final decision: yes or no."

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 16m16 minutes ago
Lester said he and McDonald are "bluntly honest" as close friends. Said he called McDonald after Shafer called him. Ready to work together.

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 14m14 minutes ago
Lester said he didn't question Shafer's decision. Just focused on work. "We hit the ground running."

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 14m14 minutes ago
Shafer said the verbiage in Syracuse's offense now is different than any other he's run. He's working on that to improve speed, fluency.

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 14m14 minutes ago
Lester: "The calling part is something I'll have to get better at."

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 14m14 minutes ago
Lester said his goals as an OC are to run the ball, control LOS, be exciting and be aggressive throwing the ball downfield.

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 13m13 minutes ago
Lester emphasizing opening up the pass with the run. Said that was big reason why the offense has struggled in recent games.

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 12m12 minutes ago
Lester said AJ would be third in line if this was a short-term injury for Hunt.

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 11m11 minutes ago
We've got some QB clarity. Lester: "I'm willing to bet on Saturday there'll be multiple guys out there."

Stephen Bailey‏@Stephen_Bailey1 11m11 minutes ago
Lester said AJ Long's redshirt is not a consideration at all at this point.
