SU Frosh Class Sparks Offense, Offers Glimpse at Future in Loss to Seminoles (DO; Klinger)
One Last Look at SU Loss to Florida State (PS; Murray)
Syracuse had just lost by three scores to the defending national champions.
Its starting quarterback is out for the next month, its second-stringer left the game with what appeared to be a head injury and the Orange now has to win four of its last six games to clinch bowl eligibility this season.
But a confident AJ Long stepped to the podium after the Orange’s loss to Florida State and made a bold statement.
“Syracuse football, we’re back,” the freshman quarterback said, “and we’re going to an ACC championship in the next four years.”
While SU (2-4, 0-2 Atlantic Coast) ultimately fell flat in its 38-20 defeat at the hands of the then-No. 1 Seminoles (6-0, 4-0) on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome, glimpses of the Orange’s future illuminated the loss. Long connected with wide receiver Steve Ishmael — a fellow true freshman — for a pair of touchdowns, and freshman running back Ervin Philips flashed his potential for the first time since SU beat Central Michigan on Sept. 13.

Syracuse Defensive Line Shows Ability to Apply Pressure in Loss to FSU (DO; D'Abbraccio)
Although Jameis Winston efficiently shredded the Syracuse defense on Saturday afternoon, SU’s front four hardly made life comfortable in the pocket for the defending Heisman Trophy winner.
Without starting nose tackle Eric Crume — who is out with an upper-body injury — Syracuse’s (2-4, 0-2 Atlantic Coast) line often broke into the then-No. 1 Seminoles’ (6-0, 4-0) backfield. The Orange only sacked Winston once, but SU’s linemen forced two fumbles by the Seminoles, accounted for two of the Orange’s three tackles for loss and 16 total tackles.
“There was some pretty good puncturing going on by our kids,” SU head coach Scott Shafer said. “When we lost Jayson Bromley last year, there was some great concern there, but I think those kids as a unit played real well and that they fought to learn how to play the game the way (defensive line) coach (Tim) Daoust asked them to.

SU Freshmen Prove 'The Kids Are All Right' (DO; Klinger)
Syracuse may not have much of a choice, but it’s time to play the young and untested.
AJ Long and Steve Ishmael — and to a lesser extent, running back Ervin Philips — made the Orange’s 38-20 loss to No. 1 Florida State more watchable. Long would seemingly try anything to make a play work. Ishmael provides a second deep threat SU can certainly use. And Philips has raw outside speed.
That’s not to say that SU (2-4, 0-2 Atlantic Coast) should stop giving the ball to Prince-Tyson Gulley or hitting the likes of Adrian Flemming and Jarrod West on a mixed range of passes. Teams that are trying to be good should give their best players the ball. But the Syracuse freshmen are also among the Orange’s best.
On Saturday, freshmen gave a Syracuse season that’s slipping the most traction it’s had in a month. They’re healthy while the Orange is without starting quarterback Terrel Hunt, and receivers Brisly Estime and Ashton Broyld, among other players. And while the freshmen have plenty of developing to do, letting them do it in games gives the Orange its greatest chance to win now and in the future.
