Beat Writers Give Final Evaluations for 2014 Football Season (DO; Staff)
Superlatives
Superlatives were discussed by The Daily Orange’s football beat writers and decided upon by a consensus.
MVP: Riley Dixon (punter)
Offensive MVP: Steve Ishmael (wide receiver)
Defensive MVP: Cameron Lynch (outside linebacker)
Biggest disappointment: The running backs
Best unit: Linebackers
Coaching MVP: Chuck Bullough (defensive coordinator)
Best win: Central Michigan (40-3, Sept. 13)
Worst loss: Maryland (34-20, Sept. 20)
Biggest takeaway: Zaire Franklin (linebacker)
Rookie of the year: Steve Ishmael (wide receiver)
2015 WR West Lindor De-Commits From SU (TNIAAM; Norowski)
After being ignored by the staff, the St. Louis product retracted his pledge to the Orange.
While it was a bit surprising back in July when Westerband "West" Lindor committed to the Orange, after watching his tape you could see how he'd fit in as a WR/TE hybrid in George McDonald's offense. However, as we all know, McDonald was demoted and Tim Lester took over, and Lindor looks to be the first casualty of this offensive change.
When Trey Dunkelberger committed last week, he said this -
"We talked about the direction that the offense is going with 12 personnel, being centered around tight ends and the fact that they want to see a tight end get 40 catches in a season," Dunkelberger said. "The direction they want to go just seems like an exciting place to be at this time."
It appears that Dunkelberger's commitment showed Lindor the writing on the wall, so he did what was best for him and de-committed. The most worrying part of this de-commitment, however, is that this is now the second recruit in this class that was largely ignored until he just gave up, after Gerald Robinson did so last month.
Item: Off the disappointing and regressive 3-9 season that concluded last Saturday, it’s worth noting that since Daryl Gross took over running the Syracuse athletic department fulltime in Jan. 2005, the Orange and Indiana are the only Power 5 conference programs (64 total) NOT to have appeared in the Top 25 polls.
When is Syracuse football going to return to relevancy? And, no, we don’t mean relevant by being one of the 76 bowl teams in an era when making a bowl game is so watered down with a six win minimum and games being played and added in practically every warm weather locale in the country that it’s expected your team will be a game somewhere, by relevant we mean appearing somewhat consistently in the weekly polls, truly signifying that a program is to be taken seriously among its peers in the ACC and new College Football Playoff era and subsequently by targeted recruits.
