Observations From the 2015 SU Spring Game (sujuiceonline.com; Cheng)
Here are a few thoughts from the Syracuse football spring game:
Life After Football (DO; Dougherty)
Tyler Marona breaks down the start of the play like it’s unfolding all over again.
Jerome Smith takes the handoff in the backfield. Marona snakes past a blocker and wraps up Smith. Another defender comes in to clean up the tackle and connects with Marona’s head instead of Smith.
But then Marona’s memory gets fuzzy. He closes his eyes and winces as he tries to tell the rest but can’t find the right words. “Dazed” and “rattled” come to mind but don’t describe the feeling well enough.
He says he felt his brain hit the side of his skull. That his head felt like a shaken-up snow globe. That the world was blurry before his head smacked into the grass field — ending one journey on the spot and, in time, starting another.
The breakfast burrito he’d been munching on at Lucky Boy Drive-In in Pasadena is now getting cold in front of him and he takes a deep breath before cracking a half smile.
“That was a terrible, terrible feeling,” Marona said. “The concussion that ends your football career shouldn’t be easy to describe, I guess.
“Sometimes I wonder, ‘What if that hadn’t happened?’ and think, ‘Where would I be?’”

2016 PA RB Austyn Borre Impressed with 'Family-Oriented' Orange (PS; Bailey)
Pleasant Valley (Brodheadsville, Pa.) High School junior running back Austyn Borre took his first trip to Syracuse on Saturday.
Along with about 30 other recruits, Borre toured the athletic facilities, including the new Ensley Athletic Center, watched the Orange's spring scrimmage and met with SU running backs coach DeAndre Smith.
"I like how family-oriented it was," Borre said in a phone interview on Saturday. "They were on top of everything academically. They make sure that you're keeping up your grades. They make it very important."
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Borre finished his junior year with 762 rushing yards, 232 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns, playing in only seven games due to a minor hamstring injury. He combined for 2,379 yards and 27 touchdowns in his first two seasons, while adding 44 receptions for 478 yards and four touchdowns.
Borre, who said he is fully healthy now, has no offers yet. He's also visited Penn State, Rutgers, Pennsylvania, Villanova and Akron this spring and plans on visiting Pittsburgh, Michigan State and Bucknell.
"I've always gotten letters and invites and all that," Borre said, "but right now it's hitting off."

SU Football Recruiting: South Brunswick DBs Phil Campbell, Wendell Allen Enjoy 2nd Visit This Spring (PS; Bailey)
South Brunswick (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) juniors Phil Campbell and Wendell Allen made their second trip to Syracuse this spring on Saturday.
They were among the 17 recruits from New Jersey in attendance and were told by SU wide receivers coach Bobby Acosta to focus on the defensive side of the ball.
Campbell, who was the Vikings' second-leading rusher after 2015 Syracuse running back signee Dontae Strickland, is being looked at for safety. Allen, who also plays slotback, is being recruited primarily as a cornerback.
"The coaches, they wanted Jersey guys," Campbell said in a phone interview Saturday night. "They made that clear. They want us to come to Syracuse and that's why they made it such a big deal."

Observations From the 2015 SU Spring Game (sujuiceonline.com; Cheng)
Here are a few thoughts from the Syracuse football spring game:
- On offense, one the players you have to be most excited about is Jamal Custis. The wide receiver is 6-foot-5 and 232 points, and caught a nice route in man coverage from Terrel Hunt. While it was the only pass he caught all day, the quarterbacks were throwing to him, and for good reason. He’ll make an excellent tandem with fellow WR Steve Ishmael.
- Speaking of Custis and Ishmael, there were some embarrassing mishaps that involved the two of them. For Ishmael, staffers flipped the ‘a’ and ‘e’ in his name, and the back of his jersey said “Ishmeal.” As for Custis, the announcer kept saying his name “JamEl” to start before it was later corrected. I guess the spring practice isn’t just for the football team. At least they didn’t misspell Roosevelt ‘Bowie’ again.
- Scott Shafer didn’t open up the playbook, so it was hard to get a true gauge on how the offense will settle in. Hunt was once again the starter under center but looked shaky. He finished 10-for-30 for 145 yards, misfiring on some of his deeper throws. Then again, Hunt is learning Tim Lester’s new offense and coming off an injury, so there will be growing pains. AJ Long and Austin Wilson also got reps in and Wilson fired the only touchdown pass of the day to Adly Enoicy.
- Senior defensive ends Ron Thompson and Donnie Simmons combined for five sacks. While the duo hasn’t been officially named starters yet, it would be hard not to consider them in those roles. They will replace Robert Welsh and Micah Robinson.
