Historical Tidbits From the Syracuse-LSU Football Series (sujuiceonline.com; Bierman)

(Editor’s note: Beginning this month leading up to the 2015 football preview series in late August, Orange Watch will highlight various antidotes related to Syracuse athletics.)

One of the most highly anticipated non-conference games of the upcoming football season’s home schedule is the September 26 visit of Louisiana State to the Dome, a rare northeast trip for the SEC powerhouse, which last played a game in this part of the country against Boston College way back in 1947.

When the Tigers come north this fall, there will be plenty of purple and gold clad supporters on hand, with some 10,000 visiting team tickets expected to be purchased, along with the rental of a nearby university building for the large swath of LSU alumni and fans to conveniently enjoy pre-and-postgame libations.
Despite only two previous games in the all-time series, both bowl games, there were some unforgettable moments both on and off the field surrounding the meetings in the 1965 Sugar Bowl at New Orleans, and the 1989 Hall of Fame Bowl (now Outback Bowl) at Tampa.

In the different era of the early 1960s when segregation was still rampant in many southern states, the Sugar Bowl organizing committee was liberated by the U.S. Supreme Court’s November 1964 ruling that the Louisiana statute requiring racial segregation at public entertainment and athletic events was unconstitutional, opening up bowl game invitations for teams nationwide no matter their racial makeup.

What Are Ten Things You Would Like to Bury Under the New Carrier Dome FieldTurf? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Syracuse is replacing the 10-year old FieldTurf it already had in place with a new version of the same artificial surface. That means tearing up the old stuff before laying down the new batch of FieldTurf -- something that revealed some interesting "relics" earlier this morning:

Pictured: Old Syracuse basketball court, as well as a track (which was used during the 1984 and 1985 National Championships).

So that's what WAS buried underneath. Which got us thinking... what from the last 10 years should join those things below the turf? Obviously these don't all have to be physical, tangible objects. They DO need to have happened in the last 10 years, however.

So to commemorate this new chapter of Dome history, we've included our list of the Top 10 Things WE'D like to bury this time around. Read below, and relive the moments you'd prefer to forget:

1. ANY recent Syracuse football or basketball offense
Things have been rough lately on the offensive side of the ball. Last year's football scoring had one of the lowest PPG averages to close the season of any P5 program in the last 10 years. There's also Syracuse basketball, that was 171st in the country in scoring in 2014-15. Needless to say, this could and should be buried, never to be seen again.

Should Have Known It Was the Chipotle Curse the Whole Time (TNIAAM; Keeley)

You thought the curse was gone. You were wrong.

TNIAAM readers of a certain age will tell you tales of the Chipotle Curse.

Thanks to an ill-fated burrito meal before the 2010 Big East Tournament by a group of Syracuse Orange basketball players, we now know all too well that Chipotle stalks us like a wolf tracking a hare. In the years since, Chipotle has sidetracked our school, our sports teams and our athletes at every turn, changing fates and ruining lives in it's guacamole-infused wake.

Things reached fever pitch in April 2011 when Chipotle opened their Marshall Street location. Since then, the quick service establishment has lulled us into a false sense of security, by letting us taste a Final Four and Texas Bowl immortality. But what Chipotle giveth, Chipotle taketh.

Soon, Doug Marrone left and took his rising football program with him. Now Syracuse is coming off a 3-9 season with low expectations for the same in 2015. Meanwhile, Jim Boeheim's basketball program has felt the wrath of the NCAA, self-imposed a post-season ban this year and has more penalties to come. Oh and Boeheim's retirement is imminent. Finally, Syracuse lacrosse, which used to collect National Titles like they were pogs, has yet to win a title since Chipotle arrived close to campus?

Doesn't look like C Rob Trudo (second from left) is wearing a brace on his ankle. Definitely a good sign for SU.
