Welcome
to National Spumoni Day!

It’s National Spumoni Day! This Italian dessert is made from layers of ice cream, whipped cream, candied fruit, and nuts. It is typically made with three layers of flavor: chocolate, pistachio, and cherry. Each layer of ice cream is mixed with fruits and nuts.

Spumoni differs from ice cream in that it should always be sliced, never scooped. First made in Naples, it is now popular in places with large Italian immigrant populations, such as the U.S. and Argentina.

Celebrate the delicious history and heritage of this treat and enjoy some spumoni on National Spumoni Day!

Syracuse Scrimmages, Drills Fort Drum Kids on Day Three; Video (watertowndailytimes.com; Manganiello)

After Tuesday’s practice was cut short by lightning, Syracuse took precautions in order to ensure its third day on post was a productive one.

A foreseen onslaught of rain in the evening on Thursday moved Syracuse football’s scrimmage ahead of schedule, up from 6 p.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Syracuse held a press conference for head coach Scott Shafer following the scrimmage. He was the lone team official to speak with the media on Thursday.

Specifically citing multiple accommodations the Army base made for the program — including opening up two gyms for the team to continue practicing on Tuesday — Shafer said this was “the best year at Fort Drum” since the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division Commandos, began hosting the Orange in 2012.

“I’m extremely appreciative to the men and women of this base for their hospitality,” Shafer said.

Shafer said it was “humbling as all get-out” that Col. Matthew R. Morris, Ready Force Commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, spoke to the team before live action on Thursday. Throughout the week, the Orange toured the post, conquered their fear of heights and spoke with captains and soldiers about their experiences serving the country.

“When these elite leaders speak to them about being in the fire... (the message) is really good for our older kids,” Shafer said. “It lent itself to a lot of great discussions with our kids, and (the players) were asking high-level questions about how you push on after seeing your fellow soldiers go down.”

2015 Simulation Says Orange Will Finish '4-8ish' (TNIAAM; Keeley)

If PredictionMachine.com is correct, it's not going to be all that fun of a season again.

PredictionMachine.com plays every college football game 50,000 times beforehand in order to figure out who is most likely to win. Extrapolating that model, they went ahead and predicted the entire 2015 season. When it comes to the Syracuse Orange, their prediction is...not that great.

They also provide some details and analysis of how things will apparently end up:

Power Rank: 83
Offensive Rank: 110
Defensive Rank: 58
Conference Standing: 12
Projected Bowl: None
Biggest Strength: Young, Aggressive Defense
Greatest Weakness: Pass Offense and Defensive Inexperience
Breakout Candidate: Devante McFarlane, RB

Scott Shafer on Hot Seat Entering 2015 Season (foxsports.com; AP)

Scott Shafer enters his third season at Syracusesomewhat under the gun. He's not fazed.

''College football is about pressure every single year,'' Shafer said. ''They're just going to look at the bottom line, year in and year out. I understand that.''

Named head coach after Doug Marrone bolted for the NFL, the Orange's former defensive coordinator also understands his team is coming off a 3-9 year in which it won only one Atlantic Coast Conference game in eight tries.

''We had a very difficult season, but our kids prevailed off the field and in the classroom. That shows true character,'' Shafer said. ''It's how you get through the tough times that make the high times even higher. I think the program is at a place where I feel really good about.''

Shafer also has to please new athletic director Mark Coyle knowing full well what happened the last time Syracuse made a switch at the top of the athletics department. That was just over a decade ago, and the head football coach - Paul Pasqualoni, the second-winningest coach in school history - lost his job with one year left on his contract despite guiding Syracuse to a bowl game.

Crouse Hospital Supports Further Study of SU Medical School (PS; Your Letters)

To the Editor:

As has been reported in the local media, Syracuse University has announcedplans to explore the formation of a medical school as part of its vision and strategic plan. The university hopes to create a medical school on campus to train doctors to care for military veterans at VA hospitals nationwide.

As a teaching institution, Crouse Hospital has a long history of supporting graduate medical education and residency training. As a neighbor on "the Hill" and a major healthcare provider in this community and region, we have had preliminary conversations with SU leadership on this idea, which we feel is innovative and forward-thinking.

There are many questions and potential concerns that have been raised in the community regarding this proposed idea. Can the Central New York region accommodate two medical colleges? What would the impact be on clinical rotations and relationships with the Syracuse VA Medical Center?

Also raised have been concerns about residency slot availability locally. From Crouse's perspective, we do not see this as a barrier or impediment. In fact, we have for several years now had capacity for additional resident slots – 12 currently – and are engaged in ongoing dialogue with educational institutions in the community to increase our capacity.

SU's proposed idea at its core is about caring for veterans. We owe these men and women our commitment to ensure they get the assistance they need throughout their post-service life. If that means the best solution to the VA's doctor shortage is to break away from normal business models, then perhaps that's what should be considered. The reality is that projected physician shortages across the board most likely will exacerbate the current VA physician shortages, even as our veteran numbers are increasing.

so the predictor has us ahead of virg and wake who we play as well as 3 of the OC games. so in reality they think 5 wins. but it also says virginia has a power of 54 which puts them ahead of 3 other ACC teams it thinks it will finish behind?

They think our offense will be ranked 110 also. No way in hell does that happen.

I'm thinking "someone" in Albany had a little chat with Upstate Medical.
