Welcome to National Boston Cream Pie Day!

Celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day! A French chef named Sanzian invented Boston cream pie in 1856. He worked at the Parker House Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, which is also where the Parker House roll originated.

In 1996, Boston cream pie became the official dessert of Massachusetts in a bill sponsored by Norton High School. This bill defeated both Indian Pudding and Toll House cookies as the state's official dessert. Boston cream pie is now also a popular doughnut, coffee, and ice cream flavor.

Although it is called a pie, Boston cream pie is actually a cake. It consists of two round layers of sponge cake with a thick vanilla custard filling. It is usually frosted with a chocolate glaze but it can also be topped with confectionary sugar. The dessert is served in wedges just like a pie. Enjoy a big slice today to celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day!

Pitt Coach Narduzzi. SU Coach Shafer Renewing Acquaintances (triblive.com; DiPaola)

During a basketball game at Carrier Dome in 1985, someone threw an orange against the backboard, distracting Georgetown's Patrick Ewing and causing him to miss a free throw in a two-point loss to Syracuse.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim grabbed a microphone and famously admonished his fans, threatening to ask officials to call a technical foul on his team if it happened again.

Today, Syracuse football coach Scott Shafer is grateful the practice of throwing fruit around Carrier Dome has ended. He doesn't need a repeat of the Kiwi Incident when Pitt visits Syracuse on Saturday.

That story goes back about 20 years and involves Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi and Shafer, who remain good friends from their time as assistant coaches at Rhode Island.

One day, Narduzzi's wife, Donna, packed a kiwi in his lunch. When Shafer saw it, he said he was allergic to kiwis.

Narduzzi wanted to see for himself, so he waited until Shafer left the room and rubbed a kiwi peel on his desk and telephone.

After practice, Narduzzi was horrified to see Shafer's eyes swollen shut. Shafer's wife, Missy, soon arrived with Benadryl, and the story had a happy ending.

Ranked Panthers Look to Avoid Letdown Against Syracuse (timesonline.com; Staff)

Pitt at Syracuse

Game info: Noon, Saturday, CarrierDome

Records: Pitt 5-1, 3-0 ACC; Syracuse 3-3, 1-1

Rankings: Pitt is ranked No. 25 in The AP poll

On the air: TV, ESPNU; Radio: KDKA-FM (93.7), WBVP-AM (1230), WMBA-AM (1460)

What's on the line: A potential push for the Coastal Division title for the Panthers. Pitt has a difficult but opportunity-filled ACC schedule upcoming (North Carolina, Duke, Miami), and a loss to the Orange would dampen hopes of making a run for the division.

Inside the playbook: Pitt's nationally ranked defense (No. 17 in yards allowed) will get a freshman quarterback this week, albeit a fairly talented one in Eric Dungey (167.11 efficiency rating).

Key player: Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said this week Jordan Whitehead would play despite an injury suffered in the win over Georgia Tech, and that will help the Panthers' secondary. The Central Valley graduate leads the team with 45 tackles.

Key stat: The Panthers are 11-2 in the last 13 meetings with Syracuse after going 1-17 against the Orange from 1984-01.

Narduzzi Faces Friend, Former Colleague When Pitt Battles Syracuse (post-gazette.com; Werner)

When Floyd Keith was hired as the head coach at Rhode Island in 1993, one of his first tasks was filling out a coaching staff.

For his defensive backs coach, Keith plucked one of his graduate assistants from his previous job at Indiana, a 26-year-old former quarterback named Scott Shafer.

Keith also reached out to some of his contacts, and Miami of Ohio coach Randy Walker told him he had a young coach who Keith might be interested in. Pat Narduzzi was coaching the RedHawks’ wide receivers at the time, but likely was more suited to work on the defensive side.

“They were both coach’s kids, so to speak, because both of their fathers’ coached,” Keith said. “We all had basically similar philosophies, and it was all positive.”

Saturday, Shafer and Narduzzi, longtime friends and former colleagues, will face off against each other as head coaches for the first time as Narduzzi’s Pitt team visits Syracuse.

The two spent three years as assistants together at Rhode Island from 1993-95, then coached together again when Shafer was the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois and Narduzzi the linebackers coach from 2000-02. Shafer broke into the head-coaching ranks at Syracuse in 2013, and Narduzzi reached that level this season at Pitt.

“It’s always fun to play your friends, I guess,” Narduzzi said. “You just wish nobody would lose.”
