Welcome to Carl Sagan Day!
Please join us this November as we honor Carl Sagan and celebrate the beauty and wonder of the cosmos he so eloquently described.
Carl Sagan was a Professor of Astronomy and Space Science and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University, but most of us know him as a Pulitzer Prize winning author and the creator of COSMOS. That Emmy and Peabody award-winning PBS television series transformed educational television when it first aired in 1980, but now, thirty years later, it's gone on to affect the hearts and minds of over a billion people in sixty countries.
No other scientist has been able to reach and teach so many nonscientists in such a meaningful way, and that is why we celebrate Dr. Sagan, remember his work, and revel in the cosmos he helped us understand.

ACC Hopes for a Playoff Contender Are Alive and Well (streakingthelawn.com; Pierce)
While the Hoos were letting Miami get the best of them down in Coral Gables, the rest of the conference saw a division clinched, a rivalry bell rung, and an 0-7 conference record earned.
UVa's still not technically out of bowl contention - though it's not looking good. However, there's still plenty of intrigue left in the ACC - including bowl positions.
FSU 13 - Clemson 23
Clemson did it! They didn't Clemson it! Maybe we should discontinue the use of the school's name as a verb - at least until they blow it in the ACCCG. Deshaun Watson had a great game - throwing for 297 yards and a score. FSU got the usual awesome game fromDalvin Cook, but did not get a strong performance from QB Sean Maguire. Clemson clinched the Atlantic division with the win - and find themselves it great shape to secure a spot in the college football playoff.
Notre Dame 42 - Pitt 30
A 21-3 halftime lead was enough for the Fighting Irish to hold on for another road win against an ACC squad. DeShone Kizer threw for five touchdowns in the win and helped the Irish keep their playoff hopes alive. Pitt remains 4-1 in the ACC, only a game behind UNC in the Coastal Standings.
Duke 31 - UNC 66
Marquise Williams played like a Madden character in the Heels' rivalry win over Duke - I mean seriously - 66 points! UNC started the game with a fleaflicker TD pass and never really looked back. They remain in control of the Coastal Division, while Duke slips to 3-2 in the conference.
Syracuse 17 - Louisville 41
Kyle Bolin threw for 362 yards and 3 touchdowns in the victory for the Cardinals. Louisville is suddenly one win from bowl eligibility and sit at 4-2 in the ACC. Syracuse, on the other hand, continue their disappointing season and sit at 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the ACC.

Bo Mo Is Wearing Orange and Has Respect. Will Fear Be Far Behind? (tigernet.com; Hood)
Big Mo is wearing orange and with the change of clothes comes a culture change where Clemson’s program is not only respected, but feared.
The assembled media gathered in the hallway outside of Clemson’s locker room following the Tigers’ 23-13 victory over Florida St. Saturday evening, and the thump of music and laughs of the players and the coaches was evident to anyone who would listen.
There were the typical postgame shouts and boyish laughter, and certain players would peek outside the locker room with smiles broader than the hallway. They would smile and then duck back inside for more of a celebration and the message was clear – interviews can wait because it’s a good time to be a Tiger.
Last week was just one of those weeks, and it humbled head coach Dabo Swinney. The Tigers started out the week atop the College Football Playoff rankings and then broke ground on the new football operations facility Friday, starting the process of turning Swinney’s vision for the Clemson program into a reality.

A New Top Cat: Clemson to Play First Regular Season Game as AP No. 1 (thestate.,com; Connolly)
Clemson has never played a regular season game as the No. 1-ranked team in the AP poll. The Tigers will for the first time Saturday afternoon at Syracuse.
After being ranked No. 1 by the College Football Playoff Committee last week, Clemson was named the top team in the nation by the Associated Press Poll on Sunday. Ohio State, Alabama, Baylor and Oklahoma State round out the top five.
Clemson moved up two spots to secure the top ranking, and while Dabo Swinney said the Tigers still have lots of work to do, he admitted it is nice to be recognized.
“IT’S FUN TO SEE CLEMSON SO HIGHLY THOUGHT OF. WE CERTAINLY PREFER THAT OVER BEING UNDEFEATED AND 20TH IN THE COUNTRY. WE’RE GOING TO GO TO SYRACUSE THIS WEEK AND SEE IF WE CAN KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING WITH OUR SEASON.”
Dabo Swinney, Clemson coach
“It’s fun to see Clemson so highly thought of. We certainly prefer that over being undefeated and 20th in the country,” he said Sunday. “We’re going to go to Syracuse this week and see if we can keep the momentum going with our season.”
Clemson’s 23-13 win over Florida State on Saturday not only improved the Tigers to 9-0 for only the third time in school history, but also clinched the ACC Atlantic title for the Tigers.
Clemson has won the division four times since 2009, but had never clinched the title with a win over Florida State.
“It’s good to win that the division. That was the goal that was set out at the beginning of the year to achieve, and to be able to do it Nov. 7 is a great credit to our team,” Swinney said. “We’ve clinched the division at other times, but we’ve never actually clinched it playing Florida State. That was a good way to punch our ticket to Charlotte.”
