Greg Robinson Retires From Coaching (TNIAAM; Keeley)
In all the seasons since leaving Texas to become the head coach of the Syracuse Orange football program, Greg Robinson or Greggers or GERG or whatever expletive you remember him as never went out a winner.
People remember him leading the Orange to victory over Notre Dame but they forget that the team got drubbed by Cincinnati the following weekend to end his tenure. He went to one bowl game in his next gig as the defensive coordinator of the Michigan Wolverines but they lost. Texas went 8-5 in his one season back with them but they lost in the Alamo Bowl. His first season as the DC of the San Jose State Spartansended with a bowl-eligible record but the team wasn't invited to any. This season, despite finishing the regular season 5-7, the Spartans were invited to the Cure Bowl and Robinson announced beforehand that he would be retiring afterward.
The Spartans won that game Saturday night, sending GERG out as a winner in the end. The fact that Robinson's career ends with a bowl game won by a team with a losing record is not an irony lost on Orange fans.
The lasting image of the game is Greg Robinson himself dancing in the middle of a Spartan mosh pit following the win.
Dino Babers SU Football Hire Getting Good Grades (cnycentral.com; Malnoske)
Earlier this month, Syracuse football ushered in a new era for their program.
Enter Dino Babers.
The Orange named Babers their new head coach after Scott Shafer was fired in November. After successful head coaching runs at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, Babers brings a winning attitude and results to Central New York.
In his four years as a head coach, Babers has never had a losing record and is fresh off of Bowling Green's MAC conference championship win.
After a national search for Shafer's replacement, many are grading the Babers hire with a positive mark.
The most recent grade was on Sunday.
USA Today Sports reporter Dan Wolken grades the Orange's hire with a B plus, a half grade higher than national powers USC and Georgia who also filled head coaching vacancies this season.

Who Got Hit Hardest in Upstate NY? (chart; PS; Coin)
It was a long time coming, but when the lake effect snow finally fell it made up for lost time.
The National Weather Service prediction of up to 3 feet this weekend was dead on: The snowiest spot, Lyonsdale, in Lewis County, had exactly 36 inches. The eight snowiest places in the state were in the Tug Hill region.
The snowiest place in Western New York was Perrysburg, in Cattaraugus County, with 12.2 inches.
(See chart below of 25 snowiest spots this weekend.)
Buffalo recorded its first snow of the season on Friday, setting a new record for the latest measurable snowfall. But it wasn't much: Just 0.1 inches fell at the Buffalo International Airport, the official measuring station.
Syracuse had just a trace of snow Friday and Saturday, and hasn't had any measurable snow this month.
The lake effect machine that cranked up this weekend over warm lakes Erie and Ontario will be quiet for awhile as warmer temperatures return this week. Christmas Eve could be in the mid 60s in Central New York, the weather service says.
Here's a look at the 25 snowiest spots in the state this weekend. These are preliminary numbers culled from lists published this morning by weather service offices in Binghamton, Buffalo, Albany, and Burlington, Vt.:
