Sugar bowl has a big history of not playing on jan 1 some of their biggest games were New Year's Eve for the longest time

I'm just relaying what I read today about the playoff setup.

Next year the Orange and Cotton are the SEMI-FINAL games played on 12/31. While the Rose and Sugar are on 1/1 and just regular bowl games.

The following year the Peach Bowl and Fiesta bowl are the SEMI FINAL games played on 12/31 again. The Rose, Sugar, and Cottonl is played on 1/2 that year due to NFL conflict on 1/1

It's not until 2017-2018 does the SEMI FINAL games get played on Jan 1st
