1. BJ Johnson, perhaps our most unheralded recruit for next year, was named his league's MVP (he plays at the same HS where Kobe played).

2. The PS just tweeted that Ron Patterson, who plays with potential #1 pick and SU commit in '14 Chris McCullough, was just named the NEPSAC Class AAA Player of the Year.

Question: Brewster plays against Noah Vonleh's team. Does this mean Buss beat out Vonleh's for POTY?

Not had for maybe the 3rd and 4th (or maybe even 5th) regarded recruits in this year's class.

Thanks for the update. We are going to have some problems at guard again next year, unless these 2 guys can step up and contribute.

Well sounds like they are ahead of where I for one expected, and both are guards, so that bodes well (BJ is really a 2/3 but sounds like he will wind up as more of a 2).

They are certainly getting the kudos, so that's great. I think the issue with BJ is can he defend. I doubt he will be able to at the bottom, at least for a year or two, but since we are thin at guard and he's got a good 3 point shot, he probably gets a look up top. 6-7 at the front of the zone is awesome. JB tried it with Southerland early in the season. I wouldn't be surprised to see BJ get a shot.

As for Patterson, our 2G spot is completely up in the air. Who knows if Silent G's handle is good enough? He seems athletic and has a nice 3 point shot - he could be another Wes Johnson kind of player for us, in a best case scenario. Or he could be rusty from a year off. Cooney has earned some time, but doesn't have the confidence to win the job outright. He's a nervous kid still. He needs another year probably of just being a rotation guy.

I think Patterson will be able to defend well enough and will be quick enough to get on the floor. Will he have a good enough handle to be a back up point guard? If he can, he could play an Allen Griffen in 1999-2000 kind of role on next year's team - the 4th guard with about 10 minutes a game.

How has Silent G been looking in practice? He is a key next year...

I've been saying for a while I love our team next year (to be better than this year's team), even if MCW leaves. I think Buss is going to be a player from day 1, can't for McCulllough to get here in 2 years either. Exciting time (really has been since 2009).

After watching two of Buss's games this season I agree with this sentiment.

Here's how he looked two years ago, as a HS senior. This is the best highlight tape I've seen of him online. He looks very good here. He made major improvements in his explosiveness and his 3 point shooting between his JR and SR years.

Take a look at Cooney's highlight film, making three's, dunking, makes it hard to believe its the same player. When I first saw it, I thought a taller GMAC with hops

I liked Cooneys tape too. Just goes to show that tapes can't show the intangibles, McNamara's confidence and arrogance were two of his biggest strengths.

I think because of this years team needs, and possibly the pigment of his skin, folks just assumed he was brought in as a 3 point specialist. While he's trying to fill that need, watching his HS highlights shows you his game has more than that. He just needs to sure up (gain confidence in) his handle at this level because he looks more comfortable on the bounce then he does setting up and chucking from 3.

I think that everybody thought he was a 3pt specialist because that's what all the reports said he was. Everything last year was about how lights out this kid was from beyond the arc. No mention of color or anything else.

Could be but having watched his HS highlight tapes when he was a recruit I saw a kid that could shoot but also attack the rim off the bounce and finish in the lane. Before ever hitting campus he was being annointed "the next Gmac, or the next Rautins" by a fair amount which seemed curious to me. He only shot 37% from 3 (and the floor)as a HS senior and had a fair amount of 1-4, 1-5, 1-8 etc type games from 3 which is the streaky shooter that we've seen thus far.

I think a better comparison coming out of HS was Devendorf, who was not necessarily a "pure" shooter, but rather was a scorer.
