JB won a NC only because of Melo
JB has won almost 1000 games because he beats up on NYS teams (and because of this only plays inside NYS until the 1st of the year)
Last years run to the FF was an apparition
JB plays a tavern league zone

Really?

Any others?

Bit of truth in some of that...just sayin' Anybody have season tix thru the late 80s and 90s? We earned the cupcake reputation.
Question??? What defensive adjustment can u reference we made according to our competition?? Zone...zone...zone.. Olympics more important than recruiting or the tending to the team. yep, I'm full of negatives on JB. Loved him...but it's time.

Rick Barnes had Kevin Durant and couldn't get to the 2nd weekend of the tourney, just saying.

Durant, DJ Augustin, and at least 1 other NBA player on that team, and didn't make the Sweet Sixteen.

It certainly helps having a future NBA HOF'er on your roster in college - but guarantees nothing.

Remember James Harden in the NCAA's?
He was utterly useless, and we crushed them.
Wonder what ever happened to that guy?
:p

If you've been a fan of this team for a while and really been paying attention, you'd know JB's teams play many variations of the zone and that he typically makes adjustments to it within games.

Ok to set the record straight on that game, we were playing them down in Florida (Miami, I believe) and a source of mine told me that Harden had a little too much fun on the town the previous night.

In game adjustments are usually too late for this team. Down 15, usually doesn't bode well for a comeback with current personnel. Other teams prepare for us and kill the zone. Pitt and Dixon knew this zone inside and out. They beat us with inferior talent regularly. Changes??? As varied as they have been...same results.

Move the wings up higher to combat the 3s??? Dunk fest down low because of the lack of a rim protector. Other teams make the same adjustments (in game). we have become tooo predictable. It's like the army marching in to fight. Others teams prepare and the ambush us like sitting ducks.

Or we just dont have the horses for our system due to combo of sanctions, recruiting misses and early entries.

Although id agree to ditch the zone this year

Trash thread. Nice try.

Why do some think just because stuff in the present/ recent years is worthy of criticism, that means people are also discrediting everything accomplished over 40 years? It's amateur hour.
You are right in many ways. But sooooo many here make it sound that JB's record/results are NOT a result of good coaching but happenstance. They want a new coach worthy of the program when they forget that JB made said program thru hard work and dedication. Only by listing some said happenstance can it be point out that it is NOT. There are just too many to be chance. And there others who acknowledge his acclaims but make it sound like the guy goes into work and sleeps at his desk all day and is soon to be caught napping on the bench during a game! Yes, at his present tenure, it is time to think of the future be it next year or the following but please, give the man the respect he is due.

Thanks for helping prove the point of this thread.

Still feel JB has been on cruise control. If you don't have players appropriate for the zone, WHY do we stay in it??? IMO, Coaches should coach according to the players they have on the roster. Better yet, coach according to the players that are on the court. Just repeatedly using the same old system puts us where we are now. Adapt or extinction occurs. Obviously, we won't fall to extinction but a football-like fall is highly possible.

yeah none of the big programs/coaches around the country have tried-and-true systems they require players to buy into and conform to

• If JB hadn't signed Melo (early), he would have 40 years and zero national championships. True.
Having Melo is a guarantee of a national championship. False.

• A portion of JB's "1000 games" was against cupcakes at home. True.

• An apparition? False. It happened. And fortunately, we 'only' had to beat one really good team to get there. True. And even in that game, we were getting beaten, again, by a team of less highly-acclaimed recruits, again... until Mal went rogue and decided he really, really, really didn't want to have to study ever, ever, ever again. True.

• Tavern League zone. False. It's a really good zone... 1 out of every 5 or 6 years. The other years, it's null or a liability. And we still can win games with it being null or ineffective because we usually have more talent on the court than the opposition. Unless we're playing against a really good coach who knows how to beat the zone.

Others?

• JB is a genius. False.

• We only have 10-12 offensive plays, "because our kids can't remember more than that." Evidently.

• "We don't box out—we just 'go get the ball.'" — Did he really?

• Recruiting to the hinterlands of upstate new york is a hindrance. I dunno.

• Great players don't want to play zone in college. Someone with a better memory should chime in: where was DC1 ranked? Billy Owens was a #1/1a, along with Mourning. Pearl was...? Our three top five high school recruits? All from when we were not an exclusive m2m team? Since the tv heads have been telling everyone incessantly during our broadcasts that we never leave the zone, have we had a top 10 recruit? I'm just asking... A correlation?

• Until a couple of years ago(?), we used to only practice man2man in practices, yet we played zone in games? I believe JB said this multiple times and it was confirmed by 'insiders,' but i never remember seeing a quote in print. Whatever. So, now, we practice only zone. Is that right? How has that affected our zone efficiency?

• JB: 'The volume of our FT misses is unimportant, because we shoot more of them than our opponent.' Something like that. Discuss...

We've had a good defense at a rate of only 1 out of 6 years, huh? Wow that's really something.

Should have been obvious that was a tongue-in-cheek opinion.
Either way, you spend an awful lot of time ripping people instead of discussing ideas. Or, maybe it's ripping people for having ideas that aren't yours.

lol yeah it wasn't the idea right there (we're only good defensively once out of every 6 years) I was ripping - ok
