Former Syracuse players support Scott Shafer but question identity, direction of new offense

McDonald will either get his act together this year or he will be coaching WR's at VanDerbilt nesxt year

It's crazy to see former players , talking bad about the family ... But it's definitely easier to say from the outside looking in #hardnosed

So it looks like somebody is going to get the Troy Nunes treatment from the staff.

The one thing I was going to say was that I thought it was kinda bad form for former players to say some of those things on the record, especially after just 2 games of a new offensive staff. But they're former players, so they obviously earn the right to their opinions more than any of us, and being as public as they want. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised to see some other former players, those with names we would actually recognize, reach out in an effort let them know it's not all that constructive.

Or maybe those 4 players who made the comments call up Cohen and say "dude, don't print what we say without asking us first."

He really acts like he is a NY tabloid writer sometimes.

Just like the spin on the QB issue, why is this necessary. And what's with those guys answering the questions. Has his access been so limited that he has to call former players?

His questioning of Shafer and Bullough about the defensive approach against NW was perfectly legit. If he stuck with that type of stuff, that would be fine, but trying to dig up conflict in the lockerroom and outside of it doesn't serve a purpose other than creating a lot of churn.

Another reason to hate Cohen: he uses people's real names in a controversial piece. That'll have people lining up to divulge information.

I wish I had known that was a Cohen article before I clicked on the link. I still didn't read it but I really don't want him getting page hits from me.

Maybe he can interview Andrey Baskin, Idris Price, Malcolm Cater, and Soupy Sales after game 3.

Tim Lane and Andre Fontenette think this is the most amazing offense they've ever seen

Cohen was going to call Brian Pariani for his opinion, but even realized that would be too much.

So, the only players that he chose to attribute comments to in the article just happened to be at SU the same time as Cohen? As stated before, it's a bit early for this type of article. Then again, what do I know? I'm not a journo.

With all the batted balls and int's, it doesn't require receivers to catch anything. It would have been perfect for them!

The entire board has said the exact same thing. But now that it's put into the public for consumption it's too early, poor taste, cohen hate, etc. C'mon now. All the threads and posts criticizing the offense means that you all share the same concern expressed in that article.

HUGE difference between fans speculating and the beat writer contacting former players in the program and getting comments.

One is typical fanspeak. The other is incorrect for someone in Cohen's position to do two weeks into a season.

Well, for years we've been lectured by some folks that any negativity here harms this program in unspeakable ways.

I don't believe that. But if one does, why is it different?

Just one man's opinion, but I think fan internet sites are generally going to appear negative, especially after any loss. That's why I've never believed anyone saying that it's harming OUR program. If it's harming us, then it's harming everyone else equally.

But in this particular situation, Cohen aside (because the PS is now a blog), it just doesn't seem like a good idea for the program's former players to start asking questions already. You do want to sell the Syracuse football family atmosphere to recruits. You're joining something special. But to have former players start questioning the offense just two games into the year? Just doesn't seem all that united to me. Especially coming from 2 defensive players after the defense was just ripped apart for 400 yards and 34 points by halftime. I think it looks bad.

At the end of the day, probably not a big deal. Like I said yesterday, it's not exactly coming from the who's who of SU football alumni. Plenty of people would probably need above average database skills to connect them to the program.

Up until now, my only issue with Cohen has been the unsubstantiated AJ Long position switch rumor. When I stop and remind myself that the PS is just another fan site, I can't take issue with him. When he tries to pass himself off as a journalist, well, that's a little different. He's not, at least in the way I'd like to still think of them.

I'm good with all of that.

I was separating the contents of the piece itself from it's impact and what this board has been talking about.

Cohen can write whatever he wants, but players recently removed from the program should have the good sense to .
