Fran Brown Says - Part II

loyalty doesn't earn getting washed many times. I get sticking with Angeli, but also this is big time football and we have a good plan B sitting on the sidelines. This worked out in the end, but if we are going to beat some of those playoff teams we will soon face, Fran might need to keep his loyalty to his personal and not professional life.

How would you or any of us know how good the plan B is? The coaches watch these guys every day at practice. I'm not saying that Collins isn't good mind you. But the most popular guy on any team is the back up QB.

I thought I’d pop in for some morning feel good vibes from a pretty amazing comeback victory. Perhaps I’ll just come back tomorrow when the hangovers wear off.

Agreed. ☝️
Hello, the dude threw for 422yards. Why is there even a debate here? Because a couple of 4th downs gone awry? That’s akin to benching Tony Gwynn because he is 0-for-3 and the team is trailing in the 8th inning.

I think Fran's point is that loyalty is important in his professional life also. It may be how he defines himself as a person and as a coach. He may believe that's how he builds a winning culture and a winning football team. We may be referring to Fran's "loyalty" quote throughout the rest of his career.

Stats only tell one side of the story. There were too many snaps where Steve looked confused and scared to throw. He is partly responsible for some of those missed protection calls. We won’t win games of significance if he only plays 1 good quarter.

Guy got rocked 4 times and that was just the clean hits. The first one seemed to shake him up and he seemed more off after that one. Let’s not discount that he might have been shaken up after the first big hit and took awhile to settle back down.

And I’m not implying he was concussed and the staff threw him in to play anyway. Anyone that’s played football or any other sport where you get absolutely leveled, know how that can mess up your body for awhile where it’s just “off”.

If he can just stop overthrowing high we coulda won bye a few td. He throws off his back ft too much which raises his release point. wstch td and how he stepped thrubthrow. if he can keep doing this we will be good.

In the game thread right before the comeback I basically said that most likely Rickie Collins will be the starter for Colgate. I didn’t use the term definitely and then Angeli locked in and did what I felt was impossible the way that game was flowing.

I think people wanted a new look for two reasons. We where losing to UCONN and Angeli was throwing most of his passes above the receivers head which is typically a sign of something not right or mechanics where off.
Good for Fran sticking with his guy.

Oh yeah something wasn’t right - he cannot sense danger and consistently lets a defender completely level him - then he is simply playing dinged up and can’t make a pass because he is hurt

Angeli has already been smoked by blitzers with a free run more times than McCord was all last season. He has gotten up every time. And he continues to unflinchingly hang in the pocket despite all the hits. Tough kid.

We knew going in Angeli did not have great arm talent. He is definitely not McCord. And yet he has thrown for nearly 700 yards in 2 games facing a lot of pressure and an elite SEC defense, with 3 total starts under his belt.

This puts things into perspective nicely thank you

Angelli has been knocked down more in the past two games than McCord was through half the season last year. If he gets a little consistent protection, he will be just fine. You don’t remove your starting quarterback in the second game of the season. That would make the coaching staff look indecisive with choosing their starting quarterback. The best thing about yesterday, besides winning, was the defense really stepping up in the second half and giving our offense a chance to win the game. Our quarterback threw for plus 400 yards yesterday and people are questioning his ability to throw. It tells us how much McCord spoiled us last year. You can begin to see that Angelli trusts Valari and JRS. Now, Nixon has to find a way to get Willis more involved. Nixon is an unsung hero. He made a lot of big catches yesterday and Angelli trusts him to be in the correct spots to check down. The offensive line has question marks everywhere. Losing Mack really hurts. They have to make a big step up next week. There should be ZERO pressure and no sacks on our quarterback next week. I hope we take more medium and deep shots down the field.

Belief without evidence, Dino’s influence lives on.

Nixon had a few good runs too. I think they need to give him some runs to make sure that defenses do not see him as one dimensional.

As for Angeli, he looked down and out. But rallied. I interpret Fran’s post game presser as indicating that it is Steve’a team without having to worry. Until it isn’t. Could be a long term injury. Could be that it is time to pass the baton. But if/when it becomes Ricky’s team, it will be Ricky’s team without having to look over his shoulder. And so on. This position is not any other position where they are going to get benched, sub to see if it generates a spark or go back and forth.

We saw what BC did last year against us with a backup. It can work. James Madison is taking it to an extreme.

Fran is just saying that he will not take Angeli out because he is playing poorly until it is time to anoint Ricky. Obviously, if we are fortunate enough to have garbage time against Colgate, Ricky will get to play. Or if Angeli cannot play for a series medically.

I really am starting to talk myself into that this team can fix its communication issues and play to their full potential. Which I think is high, we have playmakers on offense. I agree on the defense we have some dudes.
