Fran / Players Postgame Presser | Pitt

Would have been kind of funny if a follow up asked to Fran was "so we can confirm now, as many of us suspected, that there wasn't actually a QB competition between Angeli and Collins in the preseason. Were you just trying to keep Rickie's confidence level up?"
" OK we'll take one more question here . you...the uncle in the back row. what's your question ?"

And yet Fran took 100% of the blame for the end of the 1st half.

He didn't blame Collins. He didn't blame the rest of the coaching staff.

He didn't publicly blame anyone but himself.

Good for him for taking it, but, I mean..."come on man!" Moreover, if he didn't place the full onus on him, especially based upon how blatantly apparent it was as captain of the ship, etc., it would've made him look even worse...double whammy kinda deal.

Pitt wanted to make the change though. That's the difference to me. He was a coaches decision by beating out their starter. Oklahoma's backup barely threw for 150 yards against Kent State (and they could have won with 0 passing attempts).

Clemson kid looked OK against SMU, although both he and Rickie lost by roughly the same margin to them. Ole Miss is a good example though.
Clemson kid looked great, Hawkins was put in a position to succeed and that's what i'm trying to point to. he doesn't need to play amazing, the team just cant get noticeably worse and considering the scary injury that happened on the first drive, i think the OC put him and the team in a position to get a relatively easy win despite the adversity.

I believe Collins is getting all the practice reps so yes Carney isn't up to speed ...l also believe having the ability to read a defense and knowing your second and third options are important for a QB. If a player lacks that ability can it be coached up?
