Listening to the podcast version from last night and he was posed the question, “What are the things you need to do to get back to a bowl and have a season like 2024?” And he answered with, “Dominate the portal.” Spoke on it for a couple of minutes.

He’s spoken so much about building through the high school ranks and this is the first time he’s really emphasized the portal in any interviews this season.

He’s spoken so much about building through the high school ranks and this is the first time he’s really emphasized the portal in any interviews this season.

I really do believe they are a lot closer to breakthrough than people think. They have a lot of supplementary players that are very good imo. Even without QB play, I’ve never felt they were that outmatched elsewhere in the losing streak, in fact most of the issue is they were not that much better that they can make up the difference of no QB play. Need a few alphas on both sides on the ball from the portal (on offense prioritize another elite running back and a lineman) (on defense, an elite DT and safety) and bam with a healthy Angeli and hopefully a backup ready at all times, you are right back in the conversation. A lot of the ACC aren’t built to have high ceilings, with Fran that is not the case at Syracuse as higher ceiling talented players enter the program. It doesn’t mean that there can’t be a season like this season. But there is a reason when you have a QB executing plays, you can go down to Death Valley and win double digits against what was at the time a desperate and super talented Clemson.

Yes, thank you. I imagine Fran is tired of the accountability part of his job this year. He needs some continued coaching on his talks with the media … but I can’t say I’d be any better at it

Now, in our second full cycle and beyond, we can go back to attacking the portal more aggressively with most of the roster being brought in by Fran vs. holdovers from Dino. With how much youth we have right now - a lot of whom are already contributing - I'm expecting them to prioritize experience in the portal.

We'll see though, I think it's gonna be a pretty chaotic few weeks once the portal opens up with there now only being one window + the number of coaching changes across the Power 4 conferences.

To be fair he did seem pretty light hearted about it overall but I do think part of him did truly agree. He said you'll see the run game continue to improve these next couple of weeks.

Think it made sense to take a large HS class last year to really start to get a core of "Fran's guys" in the building. Now, in our second full cycle and beyond, we can go back to attacking the portal more aggressively with most of the roster being brought in by Fran vs. holdovers from Dino. With how much youth we have right now - a lot of whom are already contributing - I'm expecting them to prioritize experience in the portal.

We'll see though, I think it's gonna be a pretty chaotic few weeks once the portal opens up with there now only being one window + the number of coaching changes across the Power 4 conferences.

They currently have 30 HS commits. That’s
more than most schools. I think Fran knows he’s going to lose some guys to the portal (thinking WR’s) and then he’s going to have the talk with a lot of guys. I expect high turnover.
Our defense needs some guys that can come in and make a major impact right away.

If they are going to pound the portal, Fran better have a pile of cash. Everyone is looking for the piece that might put them over the top. Lineman are a priority for everyone. They’re expensive too.

Makes sense as it is top of mind that there are not 15 more practices coming, this season is essentially over and there is little room for a one-injury excuses to kill our 2026 chances.

I agree. I do think we gotta lock Don down for a couple years to help defense and hire new oline guy. In my mind dt is biggest. Fran is realizing u can change your team in one year thru portal quickly. He still wants to teach these kids he has recruited and develop them but he realizes portal is helpful. We went to Clemson and beat them down unlike any team did this year. We are right there. We really gotta fix our run game. If ur a good team, u need to be able to run even when they know ur gonna run. P.s. gotta be able to do opposite on d. gotta stop it when we know they are gonna. We shall see.

I've seen every game and still don't have a firm opinion on our physicality and toughness.

Glass half full: We held our own with Tenny and matched up fine with Clemson and SMU.

Glass half empty: Dominated by Pitt (badly), GT and Miami.

Are we an aggressive team? I dunno. Were we aggressive last year or just very precise? Not sure.

Got some in this recruiting class but yes we need to attack the portal HARD in the trenches on both sides .

Yes. The fact he's heading into Year 3 means he has developed relationships with prior recruits who went elsewhere and who are prime candidates once they enter the portal.
