Nice article on Frank, some things he dealt with his freshman season, and the mindset that he had last year versus this year. Sounds like he's got a great attitude, especially when it comes to JB yelling at him, which I think is a great sign. It really sounds like he knows it isn't something to get worked up over. Just go out there and play, and if Coach screams at me, take what he says and learn from it. He also sounds like he's really got some healthy confidence going into this season. Can't help but root for him! He clearly has the potential to be a great PG for us, particularly with his uncanny passing ability.

Syracuse guard Frank Howard battled illness, insecurity and vowed to overcome both

Agreed. They aren't. Just stating that because some people believe Howard is going to be on the bench a bunch.

Well, technically, they're both likely to be on the bench "a bunch", as it appears they'll be splitting the PG job between them.

So, one will likely get 15-20 mins a game, the other 20-25, depending on who's playing better, matchups, game situations, etc.

And while theoretically they could both play together, then that means that one or both of Battle and/or AWIII is on the bench for that lineup, which seems rather unlikely.

Wow, he had MONO! I've never had mono, but I know people who have and they were out for weeks and weeks. Probably his conditioning as an athlete helped him. I am so glad that he put that trial behind him, and is now coming on strong.

I've been a Syracuse Basketball fan since the mid 80's and every time I read one of these articles I think that we've had the best group of high-character players that we've ever had. Whether it's NCAA sanctions, or injuries, or coaching suspensions, all of our recent players have shown great composure and character.

Months is what it took for me to feel like myself in HS.

Love this kid. Will be my favorite on this squad for a long time.

I'm usually a little tough on Frank but he played much better against LeMoyne than his first game. If he's able to distribute like he did last game this year, we have two very capable point guards leading this team, we go as far as our guards take us this year.

I don't like it that he or anyone else had to play in fear of catching JB's wrath for doing something "wrong".

My brother was a D1 tennis player, got mono, and got sent home for e weeks. While it impacts people differently, playing through it while doing school is really impressive.

Was that supposed to be 3 or 4? It's amazing how badly you feel when it hits. No energy at all.

I think we have three really good guards in Frank, John and Tyus. Plus we have Andrew who although he isn't a straight up guard is a great shooter who can create his own shot.

They way Battle is hitting 3's he seems like a season lock at the 2 spot.

Pretty much, its called accountability. It's a good life lesson on expected performance and the ability to follow direction. Of course you aren't forced to accept the scholarship.

I understand accountability but your asking a kid to stop doing things he has done his whole basketball career. The kid was seriously scared about taking ANY shot.

Look he handled it well and I give him credit for that.

And the fact that he was able to learn and follow JB's directions without whining about it is great and shows that he understands how things work and is mature enough to handle the situation. The other end of the spectrum is freshman Dion telling JB to off.

I'm a huge Frank Howard fan. I thought he was the best pure PG on last year's team, and I fully expect him to have an excellent season this year. Big, strong kid who has gained confidence in his game and his shot. Personally, I like his game a lot more than Gillon's, especially with this team. I think we need more of a distributor than a scorer running the point with all the weapons we have on the wings.

With Frank's size, handle, court vision, and now shot, he is looking like a lottery pick.
I really hope we don't look back on this post and laugh
