Fran's Game 10 Press Conference | Miami

Well, if you dont want him to transfer and hes demanding that he gets a redshirt year...you pretty much know hes going to transfer.

If you put him out there and he puts some nice throws on tape etc you may lose him to a peer school.

Remember the portal has changed everything.

Not saying that is this case with this, but I think you can see a logical argument there.
Maybe there's more to the story. And maybe some day we'll find out. And maybe it's not certain that he's leaving.

Also if you are on a game count for Carney why bring him in last game to just run the ball for a series? That literally makes zero sense.
They must want to use it up so they don't have to hear about him as an option

You can agree or disagree with the changes Fran is making, but it seems like he is learning a lot in the face of adversity. I think those changes start with staff placement, more importance based on developing players vs staffing based on recruiting. You don't need the elite recruiter at this position when you have Fran Brown in charge. You need a guy to develop the talent.
I hope he's learning something but as of now can't figure out exactly what.

To be fair, there was an interview before the season where I believe Carney himself said he was redshirting.

Well, if it is certain that Angeli is coming back... I could see why Carney's team might want to be looking for a new stop with 4 years remaining, rather than just 3. But then why play Carney at all? Filardi has more passes than Carney has plays.

There was.
I just think most of us thought that was because he would take the time to learn behind the starters.
I know I assumed he would be willing to play, but that might of been a bridge too far for him to go if he and his father have his future planned out a certain way.

If I am not mistaken, it was pretty clear that Carney and his father for that matter, have decided they want to take a redshirt year this year.

If that does not tell you that he is hitting the portal, idk what does.
Zero inside information here, but Carney should transfer as long as Jeff Nixon is our offensive coordinator. He is probably not a fit for his system and it's probably the reason why they don't have packages for him to throw the ball. The only way I see him not transferring is if Nixon left and we brought in an offensive coach to be an OC from a Vanderbilt or Georgia Tech or similar school who runs more run heavy with the occasional slant and deep ball offense, which I think he is probably a better fit in those systems. Would not be shocked if either of those schools are his next destination if the head coaches there don't leave. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I feel as long as Jeff Nixon is our Offensive Coordinator, the QB room should be filled with the same type of QB. Obviously there would be a drop off from QB 1 to QB 2 to QB 3, but the QB room just doesn't seem well constructed at all. Despite Filardi not so good performance on Friday, he seems like a fit for the Jeff Nixon offense if everything clicked. I thought he had good decision making and the arm, he's just very inexperienced and it hurt execution.

To get it over with and not have to hear about putting him in after putrid games

I am not the one to put him in the game against Colgate (1 play), Pitt (2 drives), and UNC (1 drive). Nobody thinks Williams or Belin are the answer because they have not seen the field and done well enough to want to see more...

Then why waste the time and effort recruiting him?

I'm okay with the changes, but am unsure if it proves your point. He let go of Myles White, who wasn't there for recruiting purposes. We'll know after the season if Fran learned the lesson based on what happens with the DC and both line positions.

Agreed and I think that is why people need to be less critical on this coaching staff right now.

We are only in year two of essentially a complete rebuild.

We kept all the really good pieces from Dino Babers squads...most have now graduated. That was a huge loss. Most of those guys were here for 5-6 years.

The QB room may seem like a mess but its kind of caught in the middle here. You have Jakari who is Babers recruit that we kept but is a mobile first qb who is not even close to a system match for Nixon. Collins was brought in as the best available but again really isnt a system match.

Filardi is a system match but is just a true freshman.

This year was and always should be seen as a developmental year...Unfortunately after the 10 win season last year and Angeli looking so good and the Clemson win at Clemson has caused delusions with this fan base.

We are not a powerhouse football program....yet.

This will take time to develop our system, it does not happen overnight.

The QB coach and the TE coach just swapped places…. With 3 games left. Not in the offseason when it probably would be hard enough. This is nuts.

I'm more concerned with the highly questionable decision making of the people who thought Filardi starting was a good idea and the extremely odd usage of Carney this season.
I am really questioning Fran's judgment.
He should have the intestinal fortitude to say, "look, I hear all the frustration of the fans about Rickie's performance, but you've got to trust me that no one else is close to being able to play." Instead of, "I'm sticking with Rickie because he's my guy and I have to stick with him."

You looking for 3 firings there, are ya?

That's a great question, I think Carney was a great QB prospect that they were thinking they could build a great offense around in 2027 or 2028, we weren't even talking about him running an offense in 2025 until Angeli got hurt and Collins wasn't looking so good. I think Fran specifically severely underestimated the impact on how the rest of the offense would operate if the QB style deviated from one QB to another QB. I think he has learned that lesson, probably in the spring when he brought in Angeli, but got that confirmed since the Clemson game. Whether Jeff Nixon is the OC next season or not, I would hope the styles of our QBs from QB1 to QB5 are pretty consistent with one another even with the drop off in talent at each level.

that's semantics. he basically said that for a month and everyone was yelling at him. he never said, "I have to stick with him." He said he was the best option and people didn't believe him. Turns out, he was right.

And now people are claiming a guy they've barely seen is better yet again. And blaming Fran for being wrong.

The reality is we didn't have much depth behind Steve. It happens. And we're suffering because of it. Not that complicated or some grand conspiracy theory.

Everything about this kid’s situation is weird.

Well, if our hands were tied from the standpoint that we were never going to burn Carney's redshirt, then his situation kinda answers itself. We pepper him in into a few games but never really get a chance to see what he can do... by design. People can pine to give him the reigns all they want, but if we ain't burning the redshirt, it was NEVER gonna happen.

If we're saving his redshirt it may likely be cuz he's transferring and he wants to start somewhere next year (is my guess)...

We need him to start NOW (and not next year), unfortunately.

A situation that we'll see more common in this new NIL era... redshirts held for transfer out because loyalty is a 1-year proposition.

I don't like it, but it is where we are and I can't blame Carney if that's what he wants.

The days of sitting for 2-3 years at QB and waiting for your turn to start are gone. Yes, redshirt year one, compete for starter year 2 and if you don't get it, move on... Carney prolly knows full well he will be, at best, #2, behind Angeli again next year...

Yeah Rickie turning out to be a dud killed the QB room. Too many young guys or not P4 guys behind Angeli. We have a lot of holes to fill in the portal, a functional QB2 is top of the list and it isn’t as hard to do as people think. Especially with Angeli very likely to not be back until close to fall camp. New guy will get a ton of spring reps

He told you Ricky gave us the best option to win...Can't be any y clearer than that. He said it over and over...but the fans didn't believe him...could n't believe as bad as he was...that we didn't have anyone better. Well, guess what, we didn't!!
