Fran's Game 10 Press Conference | Miami

I'm more concerned with the highly questionable decision making of the people who thought Filardi starting was a good idea and the extremely odd usage of Carney this season.
I am really questioning Fran's judgment.
He should have the intestinal fortitude to say, "look, I hear all the frustration of the fans about Rickie's performance, but you've got to trust me that no one else is close to being able to play." Instead of, "I'm sticking with Rickie because he's my guy and I have to stick with him."
I was pretty sure he said exactly that, and it was pretty close:

Presser Before Georgia Tech:
“I’m telling you guys that he is the best answer for the block S. He’s a little ahead of those guys. When it comes to mindset, arm strength, there’s a lot of intangibles that go into playing quarterback. Luke is really really intelligent, but he’s fresh out of high school too though. Luke will have his time. But it’s Rickie’s opportunity right now and we’re praying that it clicks for him.”

That's a great question, I think Carney was a great QB prospect that they were thinking they could build a great offense around in 2027 or 2028, we weren't even talking about him running an offense in 2025 until Angeli got hurt and Collins wasn't looking so good. I think Fran specifically severely underestimated the impact on how the rest of the offense would operate if the QB style deviated from one QB to another QB. I think he has learned that lesson, probably in the spring when he brought in Angeli, but got that confirmed since the Clemson game. Whether Jeff Nixon is the OC next season or not, I would hope the styles of our QBs from QB1 to QB5 are pretty consistent with one another even with the drop off in talent at each level.
He basically said this exact thing in his press conference. He said it was on him and the other coaches that they didn't have another system in place if Steve went down and they are trying to force the same pro style system into the other QBs.

Question….How many coaches have “ Another system in place” in case their QB goes down for the year?

It's not quite the same thing to say "he's a little ahead..." and saying "there's no one else close" which is where Filardi falls. It doesn't really matter anyway. So, I'll move on.

I still question the decision-making to start Filardi over Carney. The kid had no business being out there. I dont get trotting Carney out there for 3 to 4 plays a game.

I dont want to watch anymore of this season, but i know i will, just like I watched every game during the GRob era. I do know that the luster is off Fran for me. This just feels a lot like 2019 as another season coming off a very good one but a total loss of direction and cohesiveness.

His implication was that they knew the limitations of the other quarterbacks and didn't plan ahead or adjust.

Well, if you dont want him to transfer and hes demanding that he gets a redshirt year...you pretty much know hes going to transfer.

If you put him out there and he puts some nice throws on tape etc you may lose him to a peer school.

Remember the portal has changed everything.

Not saying that is this case with this, but I think you can see a logical argument there.
Then why waste snaps on him at all? Just to mess with him?

Everyone loves the next guy.

People wanted Rickie during UConn. People wanted Luke five weeks in a row. Have we considered Luke is worse than Filardi right now? (They’re both true freshman, so it doesn’t mean forever). I don’t think the coaches just picked a name out of a hat in the locker room last Thursday.

The QB coach and the TE coach just swapped places

So I guess they're going to the Villari wildcat after all. ;)

edit:
He told you Ricky gave us the best option to win...Can't be any y clearer than that. He said it over and over...but the fans didn't believe him...could n't believe as bad as he was...that we didn't have anyone better. Well, guess what, we didn't!!

The 'trust the coaches' is a catch 22 though. Clearly they had at least some doubts about Rickie or they wouldn't have ever tried someone else.

That sentiment is completely irrelevant to how they have actually used him.

What did Filardi show you Friday that makes you think he isn't the #5 QB on the roster, where he literally has been on the depth chart all season?
The short glimpses of Carney rhis season have looked better than Filardi Friday. His throwing was Mahoney-level, bad. (Mahoney could run the option with aplomb, but he couldn't hit the center in the back with a pass, if he tried).

The guy who completed 43 of 61 against Pittsburgh for 440 yards and 5 touchdowns, in 2016, then the next year against Wake threw for 384 yards. He must have had an out of body experience according to you.

Agreed and I think that is why people need to be less critical on this coaching staff right now.

We are only in year two of essentially a complete rebuild.

We kept all the really good pieces from Dino Babers squads...most have now graduated. That was a huge loss. Most of those guys were here for 5-6 years.

The QB room may seem like a mess but its kind of caught in the middle here. You have Jakari who is Babers recruit that we kept but is a mobile first qb who is not even close to a system match for Nixon. Collins was brought in as the best available but again really isnt a system match.

Filardi is a system match but is just a true freshman.

This year was and always should be seen as a developmental year...Unfortunately after the 10 win season last year and Angeli looking so good and the Clemson win at Clemson has caused delusions with this fan base.

We are not a powerhouse football program...yet.

This will take time to develop our system, it does not happen overnight.
Sure I can buy the system match stuff. But 4 for 18?? With the actual talent we do have on the receiving end? I just can’t get past how incompetent that was across the board.

agreed, not disputing the need for more time to get the talent that has come in to progress but what we have seen the last 4-5 weeks has been horrific. GROB level type bad and that is a concern. Losing your starting QB should not result in just 100% throwing the entire season down the drain. 5 wins should have at least been somewhat attainable. What we saw Friday night was a joke and again looked like a staff and program nowhere near on the same page. Fran fired his WR coach who he brought in just this pass off season after 9 games, that is not good. It's pretty apparent that things are not going well on or off the field right now but that's what losing does. Needs to bolster his staff and roster and get back to winning at least 7-8 games next year because losing is one thing but noncompetitive losing and shuffling staff around 9 games into the season is not a good look at all for a program that is suppose to be building.

Losing your starting Qb should not send the entire program into a death spiral. I think other non factory programs have survived, played some competitive games and maybe even won or game or two. I think that has happened before but apparently it's unreasonable to have that expectation. I just think those on the offensive side of the ball wanted to continue to jam a square peg in a round hole. Last week was just a prayer and quite honestly a joke. Sometimes, competing and working hard is trumped by experience, critical thinking/ problem solving, and acumen.

Figuring out a way to beat a horrible Boston College team would be a nice way to end the season as well. Crazy I know.

That's a grave mistake on my part. I was confusing him with one of Devito's backups. This whole situation has scrambled my brain.

I am pleasantly surprised when I realize that I've forgotten about horrible teams. It's almost fun. "That's right, Andrew Robinson was forced to hop over a puddle before throwing it away, I put that out of my mind completely!"

The bunny hop!

I hope he's learning something but as of now can't figure out exactly what.
The program is a complete mess and in disarray. And following a 10-3 season. We are grasping at straws in the QB situation. We are putting an injured Austin Collins in the game because we have no depth again on the online. The injuries are no better than the last 4 coaches. Shuffling assistants in the middle of a season. I hate to say it but I am beginning to doubt the competency of Fran Brown. His inexperience is showing.

Fans want to know all the practice and depth chart dirt but the best thing for the program is for Fran to put his spin on what he shares.

It’s the HC’s job to protect his players confidence and personal business. What happens on game day is all of our business but it would be a disaster on sports talk radio and message boards if we had full transparency into program.

We are on our third string center - what team has a third string center that can just step in and execute at the same level as the starters? We have a lot of o line depth we are relying on already elsewhere

Indeed. I know injuries are a part of football but this year the damage from them has been extraordinary. We keep focusing on backups but with this many losses I think that's just a symptom of strength and conditioning. I really think Fran should take a look at that in the off season.
