Fran's Game 12 Press Conference | BC

To repeat what I have said over and over, what Jeremy said also. Geting a good backup QB is going to be hard for most schools in the NIL/transfer portal world. Unless you are Ohio State. or Alabama quality. Even look at Penn State when they lost their QB. They fell off the rankings and even the bowl world possibly. It is hard enough to build a new team every year and have them ready and prepared for one system. Every year it is a new slate. All coaches are dealing with learning new tricks.

It is a numbers game.

I think we need to pull in a Top 60 HS QB (there are only 68 P4 programs so this shouldn't be a big ask), and a long shot HS QB (outside Top 100) every year. So at worst you have two true Frosh QBs on the roster. In most cases those kids will be willing to stay for their RS FR year as well. Then if they are not getting PT they likely go. But that is assuming they are good enough to keep around.

So that makes anywhere from 2-4 kids. You would hope that one of them would be worthy of QB2. The problem is we have not gotten a Top 75 HS QB last class nor this upcoming class. it has been a recruiting failure.

On top of the HS kids, we should keep bringing on an FCS/JUCO QB until we hit on one. With NIL it should be easier to get kids like Mahoney and Welch.

And finally if you have missed on the HS kids, you bring in a long shot SEC QB. This would be a pure gamble.

So at worst we should have an upperclassman FCS/JUCO, Top 60 Frosh HS QB, +100 Frosh HS QB, and either a RS FR QB or a long shot SEC QB transfer. Between those guys we should be able to find a serviceable QB2.

This year we were missing the 1st two from above. Next year we will be missing the 2nd one, unless there is a signing day surprise. We can still get the 1st and 4th ones via the portal.

It was a mistake by Fran not to bring in an upperclassmen backup QB this year. Even if he knew Angeli was coming after the Spring, it would have helped a lot to have had an upperclassmen there during the Spring. Just from a teaching perspective with only 4 young QBs on the roster at that point.

It was also a failure to not have a Top 90 let alone Top 60 HS QB last class. I don't blame him for Collins, that was a gamble worth taking.

Additionally I don't think portaling for QB1 is a sound long term strategy. We lucked into McCord. And Angeli came because of a prior relationship. Those situations don't exist every year. Plus we certainly won't be able to out bid folks. Fran will likely need to bring in a 4 star QB for the 2027 season, maybe 2028 as well. That or hit on an SEC gamble.

I don't see us ever getting a reliable string of QB's via the HS route. We might hit on a couple, but IMO that is a portal position for us. Fran has said he doesn't want to spend $ on unproven HS kids so I think that kinda forecloses the top-tier HS QB route for us. What's the going rate for a #50 QB?

You think Pitt spent a lot on their QB?

Fran is a good recruiter and we pass the ball a ton. I was being conservative with Top 60. We probably can get a Top 40 kid yearly.

McCord was a unicorn. IMO we aren't getting a another proven portal QB. It is going to be an even bigger crap shoot via the portal than HS IMO. Only difference is upperclassmen vs Frosh.I think we have a better chance at getting and retaining a Washington than another Angeli.

I have no idea how much Pitt spent on a QB. I don't even know who their QB is, apart from (I think) being a freshman? Do you know how much they spent?

Do you know how much a top 40 QB typically demands in NIL? I don't.

I did say that we may hit on one or two HS QB's, despite not going for the top shelf prospects. I would not count on it, though!

The portal is just as big a gamble and will cost more in NIL money, especially if a proven QB.

The type of QBs that SU will get in most cases will not have had prior experience. They will be the Rickie types. Or Salters. Or Lonergans. It is a crap shoot either way, except a more expensive one.

I'd bet we see one of the QBs brought in come from low D1 or D2 that can sling it. May not look the part (shorter, slower, etc.) but has proven to be able to run a sling-it offense.

I love that Ole Miss' starting QB was at Ferris State last year. Backup thrusted into starting role and has done great.

It’s going to take a very very long time to get that 70-7 perception nationally gone. Just such a failure all around.
I’m not so sure.

Off the top of your head, no Googling, name a specific game from 2024 where an ACC team that’s not Florida State got blown out by a p4 opponent out of conference.

Blown out and 35-0 after 1Q are different. If this is 35-7 everyone moves but I’ve seen countless sports accounts make cuse the literal laughing stock of CFB this week.

But you are right, I can’t. But idk this is pretty historically bad and the negative press stinks.

I do and we paid good dollar for Collins. We just whiffed.

It happens. They'll adjust if needed, I'm sure, to lessen the risk. I hope that the boosters don't get spooked by the reality of it.
