To repeat what I have said over and over, what Jeremy said also. Geting a good backup QB is going to be hard for most schools in the NIL/transfer portal world. Unless you are Ohio State. or Alabama quality. Even look at Penn State when they lost their QB. They fell off the rankings and even the bowl world possibly. It is hard enough to build a new team every year and have them ready and prepared for one system. Every year it is a new slate. All coaches are dealing with learning new tricks.
It is a numbers game.
I think we need to pull in a Top 60 HS QB (there are only 68 P4 programs so this shouldn't be a big ask), and a long shot HS QB (outside Top 100) every year. So at worst you have two true Frosh QBs on the roster. In most cases those kids will be willing to stay for their RS FR year as well. Then if they are not getting PT they likely go. But that is assuming they are good enough to keep around.
So that makes anywhere from 2-4 kids. You would hope that one of them would be worthy of QB2. The problem is we have not gotten a Top 75 HS QB last class nor this upcoming class. it has been a recruiting failure.
On top of the HS kids, we should keep bringing on an FCS/JUCO QB until we hit on one. With NIL it should be easier to get kids like Mahoney and Welch.
And finally if you have missed on the HS kids, you bring in a long shot SEC QB. This would be a pure gamble.
So at worst we should have an upperclassman FCS/JUCO, Top 60 Frosh HS QB, +100 Frosh HS QB, and either a RS FR QB or a long shot SEC QB transfer. Between those guys we should be able to find a serviceable QB2.
This year we were missing the 1st two from above. Next year we will be missing the 2nd one, unless there is a signing day surprise. We can still get the 1st and 4th ones via the portal.
It was a mistake by Fran not to bring in an upperclassmen backup QB this year. Even if he knew Angeli was coming after the Spring, it would have helped a lot to have had an upperclassmen there during the Spring. Just from a teaching perspective with only 4 young QBs on the roster at that point.
It was also a failure to not have a Top 90 let alone Top 60 HS QB last class. I don't blame him for Collins, that was a gamble worth taking.
Additionally I don't think portaling for QB1 is a sound long term strategy. We lucked into McCord. And Angeli came because of a prior relationship. Those situations don't exist every year. Plus we certainly won't be able to out bid folks. Fran will likely need to bring in a 4 star QB for the 2027 season, maybe 2028 as well. That or hit on an SEC gamble.
