Fran's Game 6 Press Conference | SMU

What's to ask.

He was a defensive analyst who jumped to UCLA for probably twice the salary.
You ask it because it happened mid season. Doesn’t mean you get a real full picture answer and what you said is probably accurate. But you ask it to allow coach to get ahead of any future speculation of what happened.

This part of the presser was the most electric:

Javon: "Without telling us your secrets, what's your game plan to get after the SMU QB?"
Fran: "Sorry for being immature, but how am I supposed to answer this?"

Fran isn’t good enough at phrasing the proper response. It’s not that difficult.

Love Fran and the energy he’s brought to the program, but I learn almost nothing from his press conferences.

He’s overly guarded and is too concerned about saying the wrong thing.

Duke clearky picked up on our offensive and defensive play signals. They knew what we were doing a lot of the time. You could tell he knew that, but he wants to move on. Similar with the injury timeouts and being held accountable by the ACC.

Sense he’s starting to get a little defensive. The honeymoon is likely over. He didn’t get to enjoy last year and the Clemson win very long. It’ll be interesting to see how he responds if we stub our toe at SMU.

I think there’s a reason he doesn’t want to talk about why they knew the plays calls and doesn’t think it’s worth digging into.

Also, first time I’ve watched a presser and not loved what I’m hearing from Fran. It’s the same thing every time we lose….at some point ya gotta fix it.

Obviously I still love the dude and want him to stay long term but my first red flags have gone up

What do you want him to say?

Sure but he leaves mid season (bizarre) and Fran makes the comment about it’s like they knew the play calls.

Fran said that to let someone know he’s on to them.

Fran is very calculated in what he says in these things

UCLA fired half their staff mid-season.

Interim coach wants new people.

Rickie Collins sucked against Duke, we got boat raced on defense thanks to erobs atrocious play calling and completely shut down on offense because of turnovers and horrible decision making in the pocket. What exactly do you guys want Fran to say after such an embarrassing loss? He is Mr accountable and will always hold himself accountable for the the teams struggles, but be real with yourself, this loss was barely on Fran.

Again i kind of think you’re proving my point. You ask the question to give him an opportunity to set the record straight. This guy was also a DC here in the 1990s with Pasqualoni. He’s not some random guy.

Are you saying an information vacuum may develop?
I don’t think outside of the die hards on this board really put any thought like oh we lost our Senior Defensive Analyst to UCLA mid season. I did see though on this board, when mentioning losing Angeli on the Duke game, the impact of losing Kevin Coyle on the Duke game. I’m saying I don’t know the answer to why Coyle left and his impact on the program while he was here, but does the media know the answer? Do they know off the record and was instructed not to ask on the record? I don’t know, it just seemed like a reasonable question to ask. I’m assuming he was prepared to answer it if he was asked it.

He left because of how horrible Robinson is

It doesn’t help when your opponent knows what you’re running half the time.

he doesn’t care unfortunately, he thinks we’ll be horrible forever and probably thinks it was just a one year wonder. Lot of people here have no faith or patience.
You have to cut him some slack. 20+ years in a pickle barrel in Ithaca would turn even the rosiest person salty.

"I'm very grateful and blessed for our time with coach Coyle. He got a great offer to go to a program with a rich history. I wish him nothing but the best." Or something like that.

The reporters have a finite number of questions they can ask during any PC. They probably "knew" what type answer Fran would give, and opted to ask about other stuff. Whether the questions they did choose to ask were relevant is a different debate.

cuseguy probably thought this was the most brilliant question a reporter has ever asked a football coach

This is perfectly normal and I feel this way as well. I think he has an ultimate goal (national championship) and knows what we need to do to get there. Problem is that right now, if Rickie can’t get it together and operate the system or any other QB, we are going to lose many games and it won’t be close if our defense doesn’t compensate. How much deviation will we be able to sustain especially offensively without it leading to long term impacts. Of course if we don’t deviate at all and Rickie or others can’t operate the system that McCord and Angeli could that also could lead to long term impacts. There is a lot of information you have to weigh into these decisions outside of the short term satisfaction that totally defies your identity.

I'd like to hear the reporters press the D question a little harder and I'd like Fran to start acknowledging the defense is a problem. It's a trend at this point that needs to be fixed.

I understand what you are saying here. He could have blah blah'd some coach speak on being aggressive on D and blitzing when needed, but then isn't he playing into your complaint that you never learn anything from his press conferences. It seems like the onus is on Javon to ask the question in a way that Fran feels he can properly answer, or he is stuck with whatever Fran gives him.

an obvious rebuilding year (combined with the qb going down) and all the sudden the honeymoon is over eh…

Agree it will be interesting though if SMU goes how it most likely will (no way our defense holds them and the offense gets a miracle)
