I don’t get why everyone’s freaking out about Fran

He didn't want that question, but also his agent wants him to be in that mix for a job because it gives him leverage for a big extension at Syracuse, too.

I'm not worried about him going to Penn State...but he'd be stupid not to use it as leverage.

That response gave me major vibes that some active renegotiation could be going on right now and they should be. If there was a time to double down, it’s right now. We’d be feeling so much different if our starting QB wasn’t hurt and played the last two games. Perhaps reporters were clued in off the record which is why he was annoyed to get that question. All speculation. I just think Penn State has to consider Fran Brown in the decision a lot more than they would’ve for a Syracuse coach the last twenty years. Fran has already been putting some pressure on Penn State recruiting and honestly James Franklin and their team has done a pretty good job containing it, even though Syracuse has been able to pick up a few that they were in on. That door with their uncertain coaching situation right now is a temporary golden opportunity for Syracuse. Whoever they hire, they have to ask themselves, can this guy be competitive or be better than Fran on the recruiting trail in the northeast. They have a problem in Fran Brown and I hope the end result isn’t them buying Fran Brown away.

Have y’all noticed that almost all of their current decommits are 4* dudes, and 1 high 5* RB?
They got all those guys, in many cases directly crootin against Fran.

To the outside world, Fran isn’t all that much better a HC than Dino was -
both followed up a lone 10 win season with a stinker.

Fran is a great recruiter who hasn't proven he can coach yet, imo. Franklin is a great recruiter who never proved he could beat elite talent. I think they will need someone who has proven that more definitively than one win at home against Miami with the best QB we've had in a generation.

PSU AD is Pat Kraft, who was at Temple when Fran coached there. So there is some familiarity with him already. There is no doubt he will get a look.

What does he need a coach for? He’s about to get a bag.

Its not about the money (or a bag as you like to put it). It's about how to answer questions at a press conference as a professional without injecting unnecessary emotion. It's an art and not inherent to everyone. Many successful leaders have coaches in this capacity. Doesn't mean that I don't love me some Fran but there is definitely an opportunity there for improving performance when interfacing with the media

I could be wrong, but this is exactly where I'm at. I'll be ready to eat crow if something comes of Fran to PSU, but it doesn't make much sense to me. I think it's SU fan paranoia.

Idk why more coaches don’t respond like that when asked similar questions. Essentially they’re saying Syracuse is less than, how would you react to be considered by a university that’s way better?! Talent isn't an issue there. And they can keep some of their top recruiters.

I think they need an NFL guy. I would kick the tires on Doug Pederson.

Could've been 'gonna stick with Rickie' and there was no need to add until that time comes. I dunno. Coupled with the frustration it seems like he's as uncomfortable with the situation as the rest of us.

I work for Syracuse “right now” so why would I be concerned about that. Like yes but clearly made sure not to say this is where I want my future to be.

it would not have taken much for him to just say "Im focused on Syracuse right now and continuing to build this team into the powerhouse I know it can be."

PSU could certainly bring in Fran for an interview but I don't see how they can try to hire a coach like Fran at this point. Maybe that would be feasible for them in a couple years but he is still unproven as a HC. A program like PSU doesn't hire a excellent recruiting position coach who had one good first season as a HC, and the next heading toward a question mark. Their a program that hires a proven winner as a HC.

The way they posed it was far more along the lines of: "You said you were here to stay was that a lie?" That's a bit of an accusation.

I don’t think Fran will be in serious consideration for PSU unless they whiff on candidates about plan 1-6 or 7 At the end of the day he’s a lot like Franklin. Franklin’s a hell of a recruiter just never could put an offense together. Now if Angeli did not get hurt and Syracuse was 5-1 right now, whole different ball game. Would be a tough sell to PSU hiring a Syracuse coach that looks to be going at best 5-7. Being a great recruiter for a factory is an expectation but Fran’s always going to be at the mercy of how good his coordinators are

I think PSU should hire an offensive type coach but I’m sure they will work their way though a bunch of possibilities with Fran being about 10th on that list.

Quite frankly I could care less whether he stays or goes. That press conference was a real head scratcher but I guess stranger things have happened

Well if proven winner is the criteria, you have at the college level, the active coaches that are living the current environment, the following options:
Kirby Smart
Ryan Day
Dabo Swinney

Outside of those 3, it gets a little more interesting. One could argue outside winning a national championship, James Franklin was at the top of the list of proven winners without a natty. If I were them it’s about who they can hire that believe will be a national champion head coach with the resources they will provide that person.

I love Fran and think that he is only going to improve as a coach, but I don't think Pstate is going to head in his direction at this time unless they swing and miss on their top 3 or 4 choices which they won't.
If Fran were to leave, I believe that Nixon would get a serious look and based on my time with him, I would be all in on him.

Oh definitely. I wouldn't really expect any less; I love SU but they are more than happy to horde cash when they can get away with it, and without interest from other schools the current record is probably not going to get him a fancy new contract. Ball is in JW's court there.

Anyway, my point was more about it being a potential learning opportunity for the reporter. You probably won't get much of an answer either way but you definitely won't if you start a question implying someone is a liar if you don't get the answer everyone wants.
