Fran's Game 7 Press Conference | Pitt

Guys, did any one of you actually watch and listen to the press conference???

If you did, you actually should be more confident that Fran is our coach, and won't be someone else's

Fran came in with a lot of energy, hyped up, excited to play Pitt. Before one question was asked he stated how thankful he was to be coach at Syracuse. He said he spent part of the weekend keeping an eye on other Syracuse athletic programs that have had success

Then the dumb question from Chris Carlson to throw a wet blanket on everything: "coach, Is Ricky your starting QB?" What an asinine question. And Fran just about treated it as such. It shouldn't have been a question. Fran has been saying all along that Ricky is still the QB. He could have asked, "Have you seen any improvement from Ricky over the bye week?"

And then, after that nonsense, Fran is still trying to stay positive, and then Javon comes with the next asinine question about "what kind of assurances can you give Syracuse fans that you will stay if a bigger program comes calling?" That question really missed Fran off. Hence the mumble about Javon "trippin." Fran has always spoke of Syracuse as a big time program. Javon has made comments in the past that have shown he doesn't think that highly of Syracuse ...hence Javon's question. Javon single-handedly takes the rest of the air and energy that Fran had brought to the conference right out of the room. He could have asked, "Fran with Franklin's firing, has anyone from Penn State reached out to you?"

Fran is still thinking about the stupid question after the press conference is over, so he makes a comment to Javon, like "hey, what are you doing?" Fran's head is not even in the space of leaving, so the question threw him and made him angry.

I question anyone else's interpretation of this presser
"

Yes, all of this.

And his going up to Javon at the end, seemingly to shake his hand, saying bro why are you asking me that, came off as light hearted to me.

For every job that is not a top-5 job in the country, there are really only 4 phases you can be in for your head football coach:

1. Just hired a coach
2. Have a coach that’s doing well and others want.
3. Have a coach that others don’t want.
4. Looking for a new coach.

We are in phase 2. Phase 2 is the phase you want to be in. I hope we stay in and get used to phase 2.

Does anyone wonder how questions about the head coach potentially leaving for another school affect the players focus and vibe heading into this weekend’s game? Think of that and maybe you’ll understand why that question might be upsetting to Fran.
This is life in (mostly) professional sports. Players and coaches need to get used to it, it’s certainly not going away.

Also, head coaches are weirdos with God complexes so of course they find most every question upsetting.

The one silver lining to.this gauntlet schedule and probable 4 or 5 win season is the heat is going to be off fran a bit

Let me also say that the ACC fining the program might be something that keeps a few schools from looking at Fran right now. Everyone's doing that... but everyone else is more subtle. Need to learn to play within the rules and appear that you are (if you are not).
No way that little fine means anything to big programs in the grand scheme of things.

I’m shocked at some of the coping skills some of you guys have. If you watched the press conference and came out of it saying “yea this guy doesn’t wanna be here THAT bad”. Then I don’t really know what to tell you. Rewatch it I guess? Even richmondcuse03 sounds slightly worried. I think everyone needs to relax.

Not sure if it was the QB questions but that was one of the more bizarre Fran PC's I have seen. The mumbling after certain questions, the response to the question about leaving for a better job and him calling out the reporter at the end before it cut off. Sounds like he is dealing with some outside stuff as well per his response to one question but that was a weird PC even by SU standards.
I don’t know, it kind of seems like he’s miserable that we keep losing in brutal fashion and that our star QB won’t be available to next season. I don’t know why you guys are acting like Fran seemed off. Our team is lost without Angeli

He’s gone, it’s obvious

Fran’s reaction sounds like someone who puts his everything into his job and does it well and hopes you recognize that effort. When the press doesn’t and treats him like a basic run of the mill human being it seems he gets a bit flustered and frustrated that his efforts aren’t being recognized. That’s my read at least. Fran being genuine and seemingly straightforward and honest seems to point to that kind of interaction

Great post. I agree

Yeah so my takeaway has way less to do with PSU and more with the fact we're gunna get to watch Rickie continue make completions to the wrong team.

I have to admit, did not love the way that presser went down.

Really did not enjoy the mumbling about reporters after the questions. Did not like him asking the reporter "Why did you ask me that" that after the presser.

Im not too concerned with him going to PSU but this certainly did not extinguish any of the doubts that may have been in the back of my head.

Hopefully this is a one off

If he can't handle these questions he's in trouble when he has to answer to reporters from the SEC or Big

I also felt this way. Fran’s answer was along the lines of “I’m here right now”. I get it, some of this is leverage. But still, didn’t feel solid to me.

We just might see the world differently, but the job of the weekly press conference is for the media to ask pertinent questions to the a coach. Not to ensure positive vibes stay uninterrupted.

Our QB situation and the Franklin firing are top of the list right now. Just look at forum activity.

And Fran begins every single one of his press appearances with being thankful. It’s great. But he’s always done that.

Press conferences aren’t pep rallies.

Or it could mean Syracuse isn’t meeting his demands for resources to keep the show rolling. Even if they continue to meet the demands for resources and remain somewhat competitive there is still three programs I had previously thought that I wouldn’t be shocked if he would at least listen to if they called. Penn State is one of them though is third to Georgia and Rutgers. Any other programs that Fran goes to I would wonder if it was anything on the Syracuse side that could’ve been done better to support him. People may laugh at the Rutgers one, but if he feels he can fix that place and they give him the resources and he gets along with their administrators. Well I think he has a very tough decision to make.
Why are we spinning out about negative hypotheticals exactly? This place is insane sometimes.
