Fran's Game 7 Press Conference | Pitt

Or it could mean Syracuse isn’t meeting his demands for resources to keep the show rolling. Even if they continue to meet the demands for resources and remain somewhat competitive there is still three programs I had previously thought that I wouldn’t be shocked if he would at least listen to if they called. Penn State is one of them though is third to Georgia and Rutgers. Any other programs that Fran goes to I would wonder if it was anything on the Syracuse side that could’ve been done better to support him. People may laugh at the Rutgers one, but if he feels he can fix that place and they give him the resources and he gets along with their administrators. Well I think he has a very tough decision to make.
Why are we spinning out about negative hypotheticals exactly? This place is insane sometimes.

I'm not convinced that he is money oriented, given that he makes way more money than he needs.
Needs and wants are two different things. Fran is worth much more then su is paying him. Hopefully they know that and have offered him a massive raise (ie. More than double what he makes now)

PSU could certainly bring in Fran for an interview but I don't see how they can try to hire a coach like Fran at this point. Maybe that would be feasible for them in a couple years but he is still unproven as a HC. A program like PSU doesn't hire a excellent recruiting position coach who had one good first season as a HC, and the next heading toward a question mark. Their a program that hires a proven winner as a HC.
I'd be very surprised if Fran interviewed.

Just like Franklin was worth a 10 year contract.

Anyways, I believe Fran is committed to SU for the time being and more money is not a lever to get him.

Okay so pardon my ignorance from earlier, some of you folks are upset about the way he answered the question on the penn state opening. That’s respectable. I would also agree he could have answered it a bit better but let’s make one thing clear, he isn’t going anywhere this year or next.

It seems the university has given Fran everything he asked for. That’s after taking a chance on him. Penn st has more money and will sell out because they are a state school. He will also be under the microscope more and if he thinks our journalist are difficult he would be in for a challenge. Hope he stays but if he goes I have faith in JW. Won’t replicate Fran but will be looking for someone similar.

I think you would naturally go with Nixon and try and hitch your wagon to his offense. Now getting the quality players here would be the next problem to “solve” if that ever happened.

Nixon needs the QB and WR talent. So without Fran there is a risk. Ironically Nixon would be more important to Penn State than Fran would be. Xs and Os wise Nixon has carried Fran IMO. Penn State needs that more than they need the recruiting that Fran would bring.

Yes it is. A salary is a direct reflection of your value to a company. Franklin is a good coach with a few bad games. Psu is making a mistake getting rid of him. I agree with you I think Fran is committed to su.

A few bad games???
  • Overall vs. AP Top-10: 4-21
  • Overall vs. AP Top-5: 1-14
  • When both teams were in the Top-10: 3-12
  • Vs. Ohio State and Michigan (both in top-10): 1-13
  • At home (Beaver Stadium) vs. AP Top-10: 1-8
  • Against Ohio State (all time): 1-10
  • Against Michigan (all time): 3-7
Dude wasted NC level talent this year with the dumpster fire he is running.
It was a massive mistake for PSU to give him the extension they did in the first place.

I'd be very surprised if Fran interviewed.
Yeah I don't think its likely he would even interview there either. I guess I should have said try to bring Fran in for an interview. I was more speaking from what I thought the PSU side would do.

Think with the downtown the last couple of weeks this could be a chance to lock Fran up long term. Give him a big raise with a massive buyout but it would be less if he was 5-1 right now. Schools shows a commitment to Fran but costs them a little less long term.

From Axe’s article:
When the press conference was over, Brown chided the reporter who asked the question (my syracuse.com colleague Javon Edmonds) and openly pondered about repeating a tactic Colorado head coach Deion Sanders once employed about not answering questions from certain reporters.

Brown’s grumpy response to the question about his commitment to Syracuse and subsequent threat to not answer questions from the reporter who asked it (whether he was just blowing off steam or not) was immature and disappointing from a coach who has earned a reputation as a straight shooter and demonstrated a savvy understanding of using both mainstream and social media.
It was a bad moment. Brown is entitled to it. We all have them. It’s just that his get documented publicly more often than not in front of the cameras, microphones and iPhones.
Despite getting bent out of shape, Brown never really gave an answer that would squelch fans’ anxiety.

I can’t believe someone here said he was knowledgeable and much better than Emily. He’s terrible.
I did. Emily was terrible. Not because she’s a woman. I had some interactions with her that made you really wonder. She was often clueless. Perhaps Javon doesn’t phrase his questions properly at times, but he’s on the right path. Fran needs a little help with his responses to questions. He’s still very raw in that area..

I liked Emily. I thought she was fine. But to each their own.

Some things to consider:

Fran is a great recruiter but Penn State doesn’t need a great recruiter. Just about anyone can recruit at Penn State. Penn State needs a great coach.

Fran would be a great loss at SU because SU wouldn’t survive without a great recruiter. It’s nice to have both, a great coach and recruiter, but if you hire a great coach you better surround him with great recruiters. We won 10 games last year because Fran is a great recruiter not because he’s a great coach.

You could replace Fran with someone like Nixon, but you better surround him with great recruiters.

I’ve been thinking about this and rewatched the question to make sure.

Do you think Frans response would have been different if the question was asked mentioning Penn State?

He was asked in a way - using the term “bigger jobs” - that probably added to the way Fran answered it… if you spent all day every day convincing recruits that Syracuse is equally as big time as the other schools they’re considering and asked in a way that insinuates your current job is not a “big job” then I could see that bothering him.

Replace “big job” with “Penn State” and I wonder if the answer is different.

I think this is a nothing story as I don't think PSU is considering Fran. I also don't think Axe was wrong. Whatever his next job, Fran will face much harder questions than this. He needs to improve.

fran could absolutely go out and get any job in the country

however... that school needs to sell him to their fanbase. A 3-3 syracuse coach (albeit, dealing with injuries) is not getting the Penn State job, who just fired their coach 15 days after being in the top 5.

It just isn't happening. Touch grass

It is highly likely he ends up at penn st.. For a jersey kid, Penn St. might be his dream job because rutgers sux so bad. I think we might have to start processing that we might lose him. The way he reacted to the question about the job was not a good sign. Once Penn st. reviews all potential suiters they will realize how awsome Fran is just like Wildhack did. We are in a very dangerous spot now fellas. That the reality.

Yup and I think thats why so many are talking about this in the Syracuse world.

Its not that I really think he is going to PSU. However, the way he answered did not make me feel warm and fuzzy if another perceived "bigger school" comes along that Fran wont bolt. And that is okay, it does not make him a bad person or anything but just the reality.

We also could be WAY reading into this at this point.
