It was. I think it was in context of the 2026 starting job; he doesn’t want anyone content to be a backup.

Kinda sounded like he wants to clean house on the whole QB room except Steve and the mystery kid. Which, yikes, but also if that’s what’s going on, so be it.

Compete also implies “[with Angeli]” which might mean more portal shopping. I wonder what disenfranchised 4 and 5 stars are going to be out there?

Well, in that case, that FULLY explains continuing to roll with Rickie.

Why give Carney more time to further his career if he is not a team player? But Fran owns that he wasted two games on 8 plays. If not for those, he could have started the last 4 games AND redshirted.

In Fran's defense, I do not see any hunger out of anyone from QB#2 down. Rickie does not seem excited to play. I don't see him on the sideline trying to get the team motivated and fired up. For better or worse, that is part of the job. He is always sitting on the sideline with the iPad trying to figure out why he threw it to the hot dog vendor instead of his open WR with a 38 inch vertical leap. That is really good stuff from the trying to get better angle... but not really good from trying to rally the team around you. Not once has the camera shown it. If that is happening, the camera never shows it. Usually, ESPN likes to do those things.

Then you have Carney wanting to red shirt, Williams who is apparently content to be QB#4. They showed the QBs and WIlliams did not even have a headset on. Do we just have 3 and it was bad timing? Does Williams not really care? Never too injured to learn.

What in the name of Don McPherson has the game come to if a player can get a scholarship and NIL$ and THEN dictate to the coach whether or not he will play?

I get wanting 5 years of NIL$. Tough feces. "Wanting to compete" should be baked into every player on the team and if Fran is implying that not everyone feels that way, it is an enormous problem.

I'm not going to speculate on who and their reasons. Nor am I going to opine anymore about the staff and our QB room...like I have done recently. I don't have all the facts, so no need to blow off frustrated steam.

I just hope that Fran is able to work out something to make this season less painful. Also, I hope that Belichick's girlfriend is roaming the sidelines and calling plays this week. Might as well get the most from our entertainment dollar.

Continues to say Luke is still learning the play book and Rick gives us the best chance to win and then Ricky looks horrible.
He is not doing Luke any favors. Luke probably knows with Steve returning he may not get playing time. Fran diminishes his value by saying there is a potential better qb on the roster.
Why would you want to stay and show loyalty if your head coach keeps devaluing your ability.

Agree with everything you said. My only question is, why can’t he redshirt next year? If Angeli is back, he’s not going to play anyway.

Maybe Carney just asked out after sitting behind a terrible QB and not getting a chance. Maybe he thinks he will not get a fair chance here, so it is better to leave now. Sitting behind and watching Collins each week and not getting a fair chance has to be infuriating as a player and competitor. Also, with Steve getting hurt and coming back next year, it means Carney will at best be #2 next year. So now, sitting 1 year has turned into sitting 2 years.

Let’s just coddle all the players. Why should they have to face a little adversity and have to work harder to improve when they have agents, family members and even posters here willing to give them a passifier and encourage them to play the next school musical chair game. What a great time in college sports.

Does that mean he's totally writing off everyone except Steve in the current QB room? And none of them will be back? Is it possible he said that just to motivate them, including Rickie? But . . Fran lied to all of us preseason about how close it was between Steve & Rickie. We don't know if he's also lying to us about the QB room now. Who the heck knows what the truth is about what Fran says. He's a great recruiter. He may grow into being a great coach too. But I'm not sure we should take anything he says as truth.

You could put Art Monk, John Mackey, and Jim Brown on this team and Rickie would still screw it up. He just doesn't have the ability to make the correct decisions, and execute plays.

Can’t the not want to compete comment be about Jakhari? That would also make sense regarding his comment about Steve and the freshman. It’s definitely sounding like Fran is ready to get some youngsters involved.

Maybe Carney does want to redshirt, and I wouldn’t blame him for that. but I don’t think he should be all that mad with Fran and want to transfer. You can’t blame Fran for playing him a tad against Colgate and he got a TD run out of it. Youngsters that you plan on redshirting usually get an opportunity for a small amount of PT in games like that. But then Steve gets hurt and your second stringer has been pretty bad so situations change. Playing just a little in one other game and getting yanked for Rickie on 3 rd down kind of sucks, but hopefully he is not basing everything off of that. And if Fran wanted him to start for the 4 remaining games, I’d hope he would be in for it. That would be good experience and that is what I’d hope a team first QB would do. And he could redshirt next year, if Steve doesn’t get injured again.

Or….from Frans comments maybe the plan is to start Carney in a couple and Belin or Filardi in the other two and see what we got. That would go along with the compete at QB comments.

Well, sure. And it seemed clear that Fran was talking about next season.

But when someone gets a chance to post their OUTRAGE about the spoiled brats playing college sports today, then they gotta shake their fist at the clouds and take that shot!
