Fran's Game 9 Press Conference | UNC

Just seems Fran so far has not done right by Luke. Really only gave him two series with mostly hand offs and pulled him on 3rd and 9.
Continues to say Luke is still learning the play book and Rick gives us the best chance to win and then Ricky looks horrible.
He is not doing Luke any favors. Luke probably knows with Steve returning he may not get playing time. Fran diminishes his value by saying there is a potential better qb on the roster.
Why would you want to stay and show loyalty if your head coach keeps devaluing your ability.
Luke's Dad...

Let’s just coddle all the players. Why should they have to face a little adversity and have to work harder to improve when they have agents, family members and even posters here willing to give them a passifier and encourage them to play the next school musical chair game. What a great time in college sports.
What coddling? You have a coach that did not give him a real opportunity when he put him in. Continues to play a person ahead of him that is bad. Makes statements that he did not know the playbook after 10 months.
This is a business now. When you devalue a player it affects their earning potential in the future. It would have been better for Luke if Fran did not put him in or make comments that can be taken as a negative by others.
I have never been a fan of paying players but it’s the current state of college sports. Under the current system a coach should not devalue another player to play a player that does not play good. I’m not saying a coach has to play any player just don’t put them in a negative position or make negative statements.

Is it possible Ricky just looks good in practice? Fran has been seemingly very honest most of the time and continues to say Rickie is the best option.

Why do we just assume Fran (and the players when they talked, and Nunzio and Nixon, and media who saw practice and predicted Ricky would start, etc.) are all liars and he keeps sticking with Rickie to play out something he said in early August and went as far to bring Ricky to media day as some elaborate rouse.
"Fran has been seemingly very honest most of the time" you say. I respect your opinion but based on what? How do we know when he has been honest? I don't think many on here believe now he was honest in characterizing the preseason competition between Steve and Rickie. I'd bet many on here didn't believe him last year when he said he made the call on the single coverage at the end of the Stanford loss. Were they elaborate rouses? Not necessarily. I'd bet he had a reason for saying what he said each time. In the contest for QB1 it could have been twofold - keep the pressure on Steve so he'd get better and also boost Rickie's confidence. Re the D call in the Stanford game it could have been to relieve his good friend E-Rob of the embarrassment of a bad call. All for seemingly honorable reasons. But for us fans who hang on his every word? Not so fast young man. Maybe we make use more of the famous advice of POTUS No. 40: trust but verify. In other words - we should take everything Fran says as maybe not being the full story.

Who the heck knows what the truth is about what Fran says. He's a great recruiter. He may grow into being a great coach too. But I'm not sure we should take anything he says as truth.

Eh, he has a pattern with the coach speak. With players and staff if he’s fibbing he inflates them. With himself if he’s fibbing he’s taking undeserved blame.

If he’s publicly talking about disappointment in the QB room *and* not taking blame? Well, I guess I’m looking forward to the Villari wildcat.

No. Not a family member and do not know the kid. I have no personal connection to any player. Just a fan that thinks he has not gotten a fair chance. Others may feel different. That’s their opinion.
Not my point.

Part of being a good salesman/recruiter is stretching the truth.

Fran said he knew in the Spring we needed to go get a QB. That is a direct contradiction with what he said publicly at the time and what he said in the Summer.

I think he is more like Schiano than we want to admit.

He had a package for him. He and his staff have a feel for what he can and can't handle....you and I don't. You really think that a coach trying to win a game gives a rat's a$$ what he's doing to a player's future earning potential? Please.

He's more machine now than man... wait... you think he has any eligibility left?
He has a good arm. He just pointed it at that one guy in Episode 4 and he started choking. And I don't mean in a James Franklin/Mario Christobal choking sort of way...

Pretty sure he is responding to the final question of "why would you want to stay and show loyalty" and KCSU is saying because of Luke's Dad......

In today's college climate if a player can help the team win games now then he should play. He's being given a free education (70k+) to play football. If the player doesn't want to play then he should be removed from the team.

His wanting to preserve a year of eligibility (that he can use elsewhere) shouldn't be the coaching staffs concern. If my job and my staffs job is on the line then he plays end of story.

agree. but he has to want to play. But if you don't want to play, why be on the team.

But Fran has to want him to stay. Based on what he said about the QB room, does he? Or was that just a performative statement by Fran? We may not know until we see who enters the portal in January.

Something seems odd about the status of the players in the QB room. RC isn't performing. HCFB says the others aren't ready, or prepared, or don't know the playbook. But why not? Fran says next year we have Steve plus the new incoming freshmen QBs. But what about those others in the room now? Is Fran intending to give the fans information or is Fran using his pressers and interviews to send messages to his players? And how much is fact vs. motivational talk vs. I don't know what.

I wonder if Carney is homesick and said he wants to transfer and preserve his redshirt, but Fran needs him to run the scout team, so there hasn't been any announcement of portaling and he'll stick through the end of the year. Something definitely seems off, can't figure it out.

It's only year 2 but Fran needs to get this under control next year. Don't envy him even if it's partly his doing, going into the year with (apparently) only one valid QB on the team, having to answer questions, what's he telling recruits, etc.

Then either use him or don't use him but stop putting him for 1 and 2 plays. Give him a chance to sink or swim. So far Luke hasn't screwed up and had a big loss or turnover, why not leave him in? Put him in for a quarter and see what he can do, I can almost guarantee that it will not be worse than Rickie's performance.

Mean while Rickie constantly is 3 and out or a turnover with the occasional positive play and he stays in.

Good point about Luke. Normally there wouldn't be an announcement about portaling until the season is over. If he were to announce now he'd be quitting the team. Likely no decision yet & he wants to play it out. This could be a test to see how much grit & determination he has. Maybe Fran's comments are intended to challenge him. I recall someone posted during the Summer that they were golfing at Drumlins & Luke played a few holes with them. I think they said he's a good kid.

I suggest some of you should actually watch the press conference:

Q: When you look at what you've seen from your young quarterbacks so far, how encouraged are you about them being able to have another full off season with you guys and being able to come back next year as maybe better products?

Fran: I'm excited about a couple of them, man. I'm excited about a couple of those guys I'm seeing. I'm excited about Steve coming back, right? Definitely excited about that. I'm excited about, you know, I don't know if I could talk about commits and things of that nature, but there's guys coming from high school. So, it's just I'm excited about the future as everybody knows that.

Things Fran is excited about:
  • Steve coming back
  • A couple of the young guys he's seeing
  • A couple of incoming commits (that he can't talk about until Signing Day).
