Fran's Game 9 Press Conference | UNC

I suggest some of you should actually watch the press conference:

Q: When you look at what you've seen from your young quarterbacks so far, how encouraged are you about them being able to have another full off season with you guys and being able to come back next year as maybe better products?

Fran: I'm excited about a couple of them, man. I'm excited about a couple of those guys I'm seeing. I'm excited about Steve coming back, right? Definitely excited about that. I'm excited about, you know, I don't know if I could talk about commits and things of that nature, but there's guys coming from high school. So, it's just I'm excited about the future as everybody knows that.

Things Fran is excited about:
  • Steve coming back
  • A couple of the young guys he's seeing
  • A couple of incoming commits (that he can't talk about until Signing Day).
OX, thanks very much for the very good clarification.

Part of being a good salesman/recruiter is stretching the truth.

Fran said he knew in the Spring we needed to go get a QB. That is a direct contradiction with what he said publicly at the time and what he said in the Summer.

I think he is more like Schiano than we want to admit.
This is totally fair BTW. I think this is part of being a newer head coach. Every word you say will be bookmarked. Shady does this stuff with 20 years of head coaching experience. Fran's has to learn.

All this speculation about a kid that hasn’t completed his first semester in college.

Blame HCFB then for creating some of the speculation. They ran him out at Pitt where he's 2/3 10yds and 3 carries for 9. I think in his 2 series he got 1 first down. No turnovers. Then he's regulated back to the bench for the last 5 or 6 quarters of play in which Collins has done nothing. Then there's a bunch innuendo about the QB room and kids not being ready.

Texan Mark hears that Luke wants to redshirt.

Javon asks a question about what do you say to next year's QBs when they already know Angeli will be QB1 and therefore they will all drop a spot in the depth chart. Fran says they have to want to compete or they've got to go. Javon turns that into a relatively misleading headline.

And away we go.

I’m interested in what people think is a “grest arm.” We keep hearing that Ricky has a great arm. I don’t see it. His deep sideline throws always comes up short. He can’t make accurate or on-time throws. He struggles throwing with much touch. I see just the opposite. He doesn't have a great arm at all. He's just a thrower with no ability to read the defense. He has awful eyes. In his interviews he comes across as very aloof and uninspiring. He doesn't appear to show much leadership at all. Its safe to say he's not the answer now or in the future. This is not personal at all. He is probably a great kid and teammate, but he isn’t a major quarterback prospect.
